Details of Disappearance
Lysle's mother dropped him off at a rest stop on Ohio Route 213 on June 13, 2004. He was planning to attend a Lynyrd Skynyrd music concert at the Post Gazette Pavilion in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania and told his mother he would hitchhike the rest of the way there. A couple later stated that they picked him up after the concert and dropped him off at the intersection of Market and Fourth Streets in East Liverpool, Ohio, near his home. He has never been heard from again. Lysle had a troubled life prior to his disappearance; he worked odd jobs and served occasional jail sentences. He has a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), the equivalent of a high school diploma. His mother stated that he occasionally dropped out of sight but was never gone for more than a few days and always stayed in contact with his family. She believes he met with foul play, but little evidence is available in Lysle's disappearance. His case remains unsolved.

Wellsville woman not giving up the search for missing son

By CASEY BARTO Journal Staff Writer

WELLSVILLE — Sometimes he comes to the restaurant where she works. Other times, he comes to her home, stopping to say hello and grab a few dollars. Then she wakes up, only to realize that he was never there.

For Sherrill Jackson, the memories of her son are always fresh in her mind, sometimes becoming the most vivid in her dreams.

“When I think of him, those memories are much more intense because I don’t what has happened to him,” said Jackson, whose son Gene Lysle has been missing since June 13, 2004. “We pray that he’ll return to us safe. That might not happen, but we have hope.”

Jackson and her friends have spent many hours conducting their own investigation into Lysle’s disappearance, searching bars, scouring areas in Pennsylvania and West Virginia and asking strangers if they have seen him.

Her daughter has even gone so far as to chase down cars she thought contained Lysle.

“Everything has been dead ends,” Jackson said of the endless line of information she and her family have received.

The continuous dead ends don’t stop Jackson on her search, which she says is easier to conduct because she doesn’t have the jurisdictional boundaries of a police department.

In fact, Jackson’s search has spanned such an area that she keeps a folder full of reference points where possible sightings of her son have been.

“It’s gotten to the point where people just say, ‘No, I’m not Gene Lysle’,” she said.

Despite the passage of time, people still have plenty of tips to give to Jackson; Lysle is thought to have been seen at the four-wheeling pits in Jefferson County, at bars in Beaver Falls, Pa., and walking the streets of Wellsville.

“People will tell me they have some information about Gene. You get your hopes up when you go and look for him, but it’s a big letdown when you don’t get anything,” said Jackson, adding that she received a tip as recently as two weeks ago. “But then if I hadn’t tried, I would have regretted it. You always feel like you could have looked harder or done more.”

Along with the tips also come the rumors, which Jackson says have begun to repeat themselves over the years.

“Someone knows something,” she said. “But they also fear for their own safety.”

Jackson as well as police Chief Joe Scarabino have their own theories about what happened to Lysle, ranging from foul play to amnesia.

“The possibility that he may have amnesia keeps me going,” said Jackson. “He could have been beaten up and dumped somewhere and now can’t remember who he is.”

Lysle, who performed odd jobs around the community, was quite handy, and would be capable of surviving on his own if he does in fact suffer from amnesia, according to Scarabino.

“He was one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet,” Jackson said of her son. “He was great with kids, and always kept in touch.”

A frequent hitchhiker, Lysle didn’t break from his usual practice when he missed his ride to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert on that June night.

Jackson, who was never a fan of her son’s hitchhiking, dropped him off at a rest area on state Route 213 in Jefferson County. From there, he thumbed a ride to the Starlake Amphitheatre, now known as the Post-Gazette Pavilion, for the concert.

“He said ‘I love you. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine,” said Jackson.

Afterward, he caught a ride with a couple who dropped him off near Dan’s Bar at Market and Fourth Streets in East Liverpool.

What happened next is anyone’s guess.

“I’ve been to Starlake multiple times,” said Jackson, adding that she went to an area near the concert site on the advice of a psychic, where she found what appeared to be some human bones.

“They were just animal bones.”

Jackson, along with her friends, and family members are offering a $5,000 reward for the recovery of Lysle.

“We just want to know what happened to him,” said Jackson. “We’re not giving up, we can’t.”

Scarabino, who keeps a thick file on Lysle, also feels someone knows something.

“I don’t know how someone could live with themselves knowing they are keeping a mother from her son,” said Scarabino.

Lysle, who would be 42 now, has sandy hair, brown eyes and was last seen wearing a white sleeveless shirt, jeans, lace up work boots and a blue bandana. He also has a pierced left ear, a tattoo of a skull with a hat on his left inner forearm, a tattoo of a star on his left hand between his thumb and forefinger and is missing four front teeth.

Lysle has also been entered into the National Center for Missing Adults database at http://www.missingadults.org.

Anyone with any information concerning his disappearance is encouraged to call the Wellsville Police Department at (330) 532-1522.
