Family of missing woman plans vigil to pray for her safe return

THE GAZETTE

The children of a missing 51-year-old Colorado Springs woman haven’t given up hope that their mother will return home safe.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Saturday evening to offer family and friends of Deborah Heriford a chance to pray for her safe return. The vigil will begin at 8 p.m. at Dublin Park, west of the intersection of Dublin and Union boulevards.

“It’s an extremely difficult situation,” said her daughter, Sarah Heriford. “We’re handling it the best we can and we’re sticking together as a family and we’re leaning on each other for support. That is what she would want.”

Police: Missing woman in divorce battle probably dead

May 06, 2011 3:54 PM
R. SCOTT RAPPOLD
THE GAZETTE

Acknowledging there is little hope a missing woman is still alive, Colorado Springs police said Friday they are now investigating the five-week disappearance of 51-year-old Deborah Heriford as a homicide.

Police held a news conference Friday to update the media on the status of the case, and to plead for the public’s help in locating her.

“We’ve sort of shifted gears a little bit from this being a missing person investigation,” detective Derek Graham said. “We now believe there’s probably been foul play involved in this investigation.”

Missing: Family clings to hope 4 months after woman disappeared

MARIA ST.LOUIS-SANCHEZ
THE GAZETTE

In early April, Deborah Heriford’s picture was everywhere in Colorado Springs, on telephone and light poles, in mail boxes and in businesses’ windows.

Her family had reported her missing after she failed to show up for work as a crossing guard. Her disappearance set off a flurry of activity: volunteers distributed fliers, search parties scoured the neighborhood and a candlelight vigil was held to keep spirits up.

Four months later, the mother of four is still missing.

Search for Springs Mother

It's been almost six months since a Colorado Springs mom went missing, and her family is holding on to hope that she'll be found. The family has hired a private investigator, but they say so far there aren't any major breaks in the case.

It's been almost six months since a Colorado Springs mom went missing, and her family is holding on to hope that she'll be found. The family has hired a private investigator, but they say so far there aren't any major breaks in the case.

Their hope is that they'll get closure by finding their mother. At this point, they want to believe she's out there and well, but they say they also realize that Deborah Heriford wouldn't leave her loved ones in the dark about her whereabouts if she was alive.

MARIA ST.LOUIS-SANCHEZ
The Gazette

[Excerpt..]

One of the newest Colorado Springs cases in the database is Deborah Heriford. She was last seen on March 31.  Soon after she went missing, police announced that they were investigating her case as a homicide and homicide detectives remain assigned, said her daughter Chrissy Mazzarelli.

Waiting without answers for almost nine months has been tough, Mazzarelli said. She wants to believe her mom is alive, but can’t believe her mom would go so long without calling.

Remembering Debbie Heriford One Year After Disappearance

Posted: Sat 9:42 PM, Mar 31, 2012
Updated: Sun 9:45 AM, Apr 01, 2012
Reporter: KKTV

Dozens came together Saturday night to remember Debbie Heriford, a Colorado Springs mother who has been missing for one year.

Heriford disappeared on March 31, 2011. She was last seen walking her dog in the area near Vickers and Union.

A year later, friends and family still hold out hope for some sign of what happened.

Debbie’s daughter, Sarah Heriford, says it’s been a long year but that doesn’t change their feelings.

"We will never quit fighting; we will never quit being her voice," she said.

Those who showed up came with balloons and a memory they had with Debbie. Debbie’s oldest daughter Christine Mazerelli told 11 News it was a way for everyone to share one final message with her mother.

"It was a way to share something with her that you didn’t get a chance to,” she said.

The details in to her disappearance have left many with unanswered questions. Her daughter says her keys and her phone were never found after she went missing.

Saturday night those questions were put aside.

"We didn’t want this to be about what may have happened we wanted it to be about a woman who was loved and cherished and to remember her as such,” Mazerelli said.

While her children say remembering their mother brings some comfort, it doesn’t come close to closure.

"Life moves forward whether you do or not," Sarah said.

Debbie’s disappearance has been ruled a homicide. Police have yet to name any suspects and continue to ask for the public’s help.
