Praying for Holly: Two families come together in support for missing woman

It would have been easy to mistake Elizabeth Smart for a famous actress or singer as she climbed out of the SUV and took a few steps toward an anxious crowd of photographers and cameramen.

But, unlike the Hollywood paparazzi, the crowd gave the young woman plenty of space as she embraced three of the four members of the Bobo family for the very first time.

It was the fourth member, the missing member, that brought Smart to Scotts Hill High School on Monday night, where more than a thousand people had gathered to hear Smart talk about how she was kidnapped, and about how there was still hope they might see Holly Bobo again.

Bobo was kidnapped and led into the woods behind her home in Parsons, Tenn., by a man more than 16 months ago.

Although her family searches for her every weekend, the 20-year-old nursing student hasn’t been seen since April 2011.

Smart, whose abduction made national news 10 years ago, was 14 when she was led from her bedroom, raped and held for nine months before the authorities found her.

Smart, following a speech by her father, Ed Smart, shared the details of her abduction, and praised Bobo’s family and friends for keeping their neighborhoods swathed in pink bows to honor her.

“I think back to when I was kidnapped and the things that helped me to keep going,” she said. “I’d see glimpses of the real world and people looking for me and posters of me and ribbons tied up and I can’t tell you how much comfort that brought me, knowing that people still cared and that they hadn’t given up on me.”

The two families first made contact a few weeks after Bobo’s disappearance, the same day that Smart’s abductor, Brian David Mitchell, was sentenced to life in prison.

Ed Smart and Karen Bobo, Holly’s mother, have talked every few months since then. He offers the Bobo family encouragement, always reminding Karen to “keep the faith.”

He also encouraged Karen to keep Holly’s name and picture in the media. So when the Bobo family learned Ed and Elizabeth Smart, who live in Salt Lake City, would be at a speaking engagement in Nashville they were anxious to put together Monday evening’s event.

Karen took advantage of the microphone and cameras to once again plead with Bobo’s abductor to release her. “Let her come home to her family where she belongs.”

When Karen finished speaking, she stepped away from the podium to the sounds of thunderous applause as everyone in the room rose to their feet.

“Don’t give up,” said Holly’s father, Dana. “We’ll never give up. We’re going to find her.” He also asked for continued prayers, asking the crowd to “keep them going up. That’s important.”

Most of the people in attendance Monday night wore bright pink shirts that read, “Bring Holly Home,” or “Praying for Holly.” The newer shirts, in an even brighter pink than earlier ones, indicated that thousands of people are “Still Praying for Holly.”

Candle Burning Encouraged For Holly Bobo's 22nd Birthday

Posted: Oct 12, 2012 6:32 AM CDT Updated: Oct 12, 2012 1:15 PM CDT

DECATUR COUNTY, Tenn. - Friday marks missing nursing student Holly Bobo's 22nd birthday and people are being asked to burn a candle all day in her memory.

She was last seen at her rural Decatur County home in April 2011.

Her brother told authorities he saw her being led into the woods by a man wearing camouflage.

A $250,000 reward is being offered for her safe return. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has received hundreds of leads, but none have led to anything.

There have still been active searches most weekends in Parsons and the surrounding area.

Anyone with information about Holly Bobo's disappearance should call TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Memphis, Tenn. -  A West Tennessee man has offered $100,000. from his own pocket as a reward to regenerate interest in the Holly Bobo case.

The Jackson Sun reports Thurstle Mullen of Memphis is offering the reward to help bring the case back into focus and give Bobo's abductor a reason to confess.

Mullen said he will offer a reward of $25,000 up front to the person who turns himself in to the police in relation to Bobo's kidnapping.  Mullen tells the newspaper, "It's not for ransom.  This person must plead guilty and turn himself in.  I'm willing to pay money to solve this crime."

Mullen said the remainder of the money will be deposited in a fixed amount depending on the length of the individual's prison sentence.

Holly Bobo was taken from outside her home in Decatur County back in April of 2011.

Holly Bobo's purse found one mile from her home

By Janice Broach

Darden, TN - (WMC-TV) - A purse belonging to missing nursing student, Holly Bobo, has been dug up by a dog near Darden, Tennessee.

Sources tell Action News 5 Investigator Janice Broach the purse was discovered Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. about one mile behind the Bobo home.

A neighborhood dog found the purse and carried it back to its owner.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now searching the area.

Bobo went missing almost exactly two years ago, on April 13, 2011.

She was leaving for school when her brother , Clint, said he saw a man pull her into the woods behind her house.

"He actually had an arm holding her, so we feel she knew she was in fear of her life, so she was compliant with his commands," said John Mehr with the TBI in July 2011.

Her brother told the Decatur County sheriff that he thought the man wearing camouflage and walking into the woods with his sister was her boyfriend. But it didn't take long before Clint called his mother, then she called 911.

Although it has been a couple of years since Holly Bobo went missing, but her family has not given up hope. They are still actively searching for her, from volunteers searching the areas to mailing out 20,000 flyers in hopes of generating new leads.

There is still a $250,000 reward for Holly's safe return.

Mom says purse found in woods does not belong to missing daughter

Published April 20, 2013

Investigators and the mother of a missing nursing student say a purse found this week does not belong to Holly Bobo.

Karen Bobo, Holly’s mother, saw a photo of the purse and told investigators that she thought it belonged to her missing daughter. But Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said after Bobo saw it in person she realized it wasn’t Holly’s.

Neighborhood dogs had found the purse in the hills in west Tennessee Wednesday prompting a search for clues but nothing was found.

Bobo, a nursing student at the University of Tennessee at Martin, was last seen two years ago by her 25-year-old brother, Clint, who reported seeing her being taken into the woods by an unidentified man dressed in camouflage.

A massive hunt was launched for Bobo when she disappeared from her Darden home on April 13, 2011. Authorities used high-resolution underwater imaging to search lakes and ponds, as well as bloodhounds to scour rugged terrain -- in particular, Natchez Trace State Park

A small amount of blood was found in the family's carport, where Holly was believed taken from while on her way to school, police sources told FoxNews.com at the time of her disappearance.

Bobo's brother said he initially thought she was being taken into the woods by her boyfriend, but grew concerned when he saw the man's arm holding onto his sister. He called his mother, who then contacted 911, according to local reports.

Anyone with information on the woman's whereabouts is urged to call the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND. The $250,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Bobo.

TBI Alleges "New" Information in Bobo Case False

Story Created: May 17, 2013 at 2:03 PM CDT
Story Updated: May 17, 2013 at 3:26 PM CDT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said that they have determined the non-profit organization “Without Warning” did not investigate the case of missing Tennessee woman, Holly Bobo, to law enforcement standards as reported by Nashville television station WSMV which aired several stories during newscasts this month as well as a special documentary which aired May 12, 2013.

According to a news release, each member of the private investigative team admitted to TBI Special Agents, that they regurgitated information they had heard and read in order to talk about the case on television.

Officials went on to state that “the founder of ‘Without Warning,’ Sheila Wysocki, wrote in an email to a TBI Special Agent, ‘You all have to realize that we have been able to make any story surrounding this case a ratings winner and online success which was the goal. In return, someone may come forward to be the hero and give you all the right information to resolve this case.’

Each member of the team allegedly stated the information provided to them came from the victim’s family.

Since the stories aired, TBI said they have gone through the appropriate legal channels to obtain the information provided to “Without Warning” as well as video footage from WSMV. The TBI contends that no information contained in the documents and video has led to any new evidence in the two year old investigation, and the majority of documents contained in the binders are print outs of social media sites, comments posted on various internet websites, personal notes, public records, news articles and a production shooting schedule.

By their own admission, members of “Without Warning” reportedly told TBI officials that they had no geolocation information about Holly Bobo’s cell phone after her disappearance including the exact locations and times the phone “pinged” as reported by WSMV. The source of the incorrect and unofficial cell phone information has stated to agents that he told “Without Warning” members the information was not accurate when he provided it to them.

TBI said they obtained emails exchanged between members of the “Without Warning” team where they discuss the inaccuracy of the times, but used them as factual information regardless.

“The erroneous television reports have led to false leads, public concern and have wasted valuable state resources,” said TBI Director Mark Gwyn. “The most important thing, after finding Holly Bobo and the person responsible for her disappearance, is maintaining the integrity of this investigation should it ever go to trial. In addition, TBI is concerned that WSMV never confirmed any facts reported in the stories with our agency. Never have we seen such irresponsible and unprofessional journalism on an active and open TBI investigation that has been so harmful to the case.”

The 24th Judicial District Attorney General Hansel McAdams, the prosecutor responsible for handling the case, stated, “Without Warning and WSMV have had no regard for the truth and their careless use of misleading information has been detrimental to this case.”

TBI refutes several other allegations made in the reports including that the crime scene was contaminated by people, horses and helicopters, that there is dash cam video from a law enforcement vehicle of the subject, and that there were 21 sex offenders registered at the coon hunt that Holly attended shortly before her disappearance, and that an eyewitness was strip searched. Further, there is no evidence to suggest that Holly Bobo is a victim of sex trafficking.

TBI’s Criminal Investigation Division Deputy Director Jeff Puckett said, “In 31 years of working at TBI, there has never been a case where this amount of local, state and federal resources have been dedicated to a single investigation. A typical TBI case file for a complicated homicide contains two volumes. The Holly Bobo case file is currently 27 volumes and contains more than 1500 investigative reports. There are more than a 100 judicial documents, including search warrants, subpoenas and court orders, and law enforcement has organized in excess of 100 ground searches. A dollar amount of resources dedicated to this case by law enforcement is too large to estimate.”

TBI’s investigation into Holly Bobo’s disappearance is open and ongoing. Multiple TBI Special Agents are assigned to work on the case which they do not consider to be a cold case. There is a $85,000 government and private citizen reward fund for information leading the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Holly Bobo’s disappearance as well as a reward being offered by a Memphis citizen urging the subject turn himself into authorities for $100,000 and a $250,000 reward for Holly Bobo’s safe return. Information about Holly Bobo’s disappearance should be reported to 1-800-TBI-FIND (1-800-824-3463).
