Investigators: Missing boy’s  car seat was with grandmother
Beacon-News Staff May 21, 2011 10:18PM

Aurora police were able to confirm Friday night that Timmothy Pitzen’s child car seat that was thought to have been missing from the vehicle driven by his mother, has been in the possession of Amy Fry Pitzen’s mother since before the pair went missing.

The grandmother took possession of the seat when she cared for the boy the week prior to Amy Fry Pitzen leaving with Timmothy. When the grandmother returned Timmothy to his home, she apparently forgot to return the child seat. The possibility that it was with the maternal grandmother was brought to the attention of investigators on Thursday night, but detectives were not able to talk with the grandmother until Friday night to confirm that fact.

Police Grow Increasingly Concerned Over Missing Boy After Mother Commits Suicide

Suburban Chicago authorities searching for a 6-year-old boy say that at least one of the steps his mother took before she committed suicide that suggested the boy was safe did not happen.

Earlier this week, authorities said that after they found the body of Amy Fry-Pitzen in a Rockford hotel May 15, they discovered Timmothy Pitzen's car seat was not in the car, leading them to believe Fry-Pitzen may have left the car seat with whomever she left her son. But Saturday, Aurora Police Chief Gregory Thomas said in a news release that the boy's grandmother had taken the car seat a week earlier.

As Aurora police continue to search for missing 6-year-old Timmothy Pitzen, Gov. Pat Quinn made his own strides in protecting the missing by signing a proclamation declaring Wednesday as Missing Children’s Day in Illinois.

“As we continue our efforts to find children who are missing in our state, we must also remember those who are gone or have been victimized,” Quinn said. “I encourage everyone in our state to take 25 minutes today to talk to the children in their lives about how to stay safe.”

In the past year, Illinois has reduced the number of reported missing children by more than 2 percent.
