Investigators patiently keep missing persons' cases active

Thursday, June 16, 2011
By TRACY SIMMONS

At the epicenter of missing persons cases are members of law enforcement.

...

"I understand the families' frustration," said SPD Detective Sgt. Brian Crews "They are doing exactly what you and I would do if our loved one was missing -- making sure that the police followed up on leads and didn't forget that their loved one is missing."

By jurisdiction, the SPD oversees the cases of Antonio Taylor and Bobby Smelcer. Because the crime scene associated with the Shelley Mook disappearance is outside the city limits, the BCSD has jurisdiction.

Smelcer, Taylor families wish $10K reward was offered

Friday, July 15, 2011
By TRACY SIMMONS

Gov. Bill Haslam offered rewards Tuesday in three separate criminal cases involving Tennessee women, including a $10,000 reward in the case of Shelbyville teacher Shelley Mook.
But the announcement was bittersweet for the families of two other missing persons from Shelbyville. Bobby Smelcer, 52, went missing last November. Antonio Taylor, 21, hasn't been seen since September 1999.

The Smelcer family has petitioned District Attorney Charles Crawford for assistance and has made dozens of calls to Haslam's office.

Thursday, July 14, 2011
By DAVID MELSON

Gov. Bill Haslam is offering a $10,000 reward for information in the disappearance of Shelley Mook, the Shelbyville teacher last seen in late February, as well as rewards in the cases of two other missing Tennesseans.

"I'm glad. I'm tickled. That's great," Sheriff Randall Boyce said. "We've been hoping it would happen."

Authorities say they believe Mook is the victim of an aggravated kidnapping and/or intentional homicide. Deputies are continuing to seek evidence on Mook's whereabouts, the sheriff said.

Search for Shelley Mook Unfruitful

September 08, 2012 08:40 AM EDT

The Thursday search for Shelley Mook was unfruitful, leading to the official search being called off, once again. This missing Tennessee teacher may never be found at this rate, and with her ex-husband being uncooperative with the search, detectives are only facing an uphill fight.

The search was ended Friday for Shelley by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. After searching a large area around Cowan, there was little else they could do. This case, sadly, appears to be going cold as ice. It's been well over a year, and her ex-husband is still refusing to take a polygraph test and won't cooperate with the search for her. It's been speculated that he may have harmed her, considering her car was discovered not long after she was reported missing, and it was burned to a crisp.

Hopefully this isn't the end of Shelley Mook's case, but when it comes to missing women in Tennessee, these things can last for years and years.

March for Missing is Saturday

Thursday, November 8, 2012

By TRACY SIMMONS

It's been nearly two years now since Bobby Smelcer went missing from his Shelbyville home. It came just months before local teacher Shelley Jones Mook's car was found burning in a remote area of Rutherford County at the end of February 2011.
The families of the two came together after the T-G published a series profiling the Shelbyville Missing, and joined their efforts to a third family, that of Antonio Taylor, who has been missing since 1999.

The families have fought to keep those three names in the public eye, placing posters throughout the city, holding prayer vigils and keeping contact with local and state law enforcement agencies.

They never give up. They cannot.

Search for more

Since then, a skull was discovered in an area near Stewart Road known as Wolf Meadows on April 16, which state forensic experts later identified as belonging to Smelcer. Law enforcement and search and rescue teams scoured the riverbed, but no additional remains were located.

The family who had prayed many months for an answer regarding Bobby Smelcer's whereabouts found themselves facing an odd paradigm: It wasn't enough. Although they held a memorial service for him later in the summer, they are still unable to bury him, place a headstone, know just what happened to Bobby in those days leading up to Thanksgiving.

Unintentionally, they have become experts now on issues relating to the national phenomena of missing persons, gaining strength and education from those who are also on this journey. The world wide web allows them these connections, and some have become immersed in these groups -- now supporting other families of the missing.

National support

Earlier this year, Kristy Smelcer, one of Bobby's sisters, was named as the Tennessee Coordinator for the Missing with the CUE Foundation. The national foundation for missing persons is based in Wilmington, N. C.

With the support of that organization, a march has been organized for Saturday morning in Shelbyville, hosted by Michelle Crosslin of the Caleb Tristen Foundation.

"I hear from so many people every day who have a family member missing," said Kristy. "They don't know where to turn or what to do."

According to Kristy, 70 percent of those found are aided by community awareness and media coverage.

Remembering

The march hopes to accomplish just that, keeping the memories of the Shelbyville Missing alive, calling attention to the case of Chloie Leverette and Gage Daniel's disappearance as well.

The siblings were in the household of Leon and Molly McClaran, whose Kingdom Road home in Unionville burned to the ground on Sept. 23. In spite of several days of searches, their remains have not been located, and they are officially considered as missing children.

The group plans to have several volunteer search and rescue teams on hand "to help these families get searches together," said Kristy.

The group will meet at the courthouse on the Shelbyville square at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for a prayer before heading to Shelbyville Central High School. The march will begin from there at 10 a.m., passing by Harris Middle School where Mook was a teacher, by Smelcer's home on East Lane Street, and Lane Parkway, where Taylor was reportedly dropped off by a friend before his disappearance.

Tables will be set up at the high school to showcase each of the missing persons from the area.

"Please show your support to these families," is Kristy's appeal. "We need you there to help these families."

REWARDS

Rewards for information concerning the disappearances of Smelcer and Taylor are $5,000 and $3,000, respectively.

Contact the Shelbyville Police Department at 684-5811 or anonymously at Crimestoppers at 685-4300.

The reward for information concerning the disappearance of Shelley Jones Mook is $20,000. Contact the Bedford County Sheriff's Department at 684-3232 or the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

For more information, contact Kristy Smelcer at (931) 434-5196.

A $1,500 reward for information concering the disappearance of Leverette and Daniel was announced Wednesday, Contact the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND..

Judge rules Mook cannot have visitation with daughter

Posted: Jan 10, 2013 5:09 PM MST
Updated: Jan 11, 2013 11:24 AM MST

Reported by Carley Gordon

The Shelbyville Times-Gazette reported Judge Lee Russell wrote in his opinion that "I have concluded that the child's story is credible."

Russell was referring to accusations made by the now 8-year-old daughter of Tyler and Shelley Mook, who claimed that Tyler and Kim Mook, the child's paternal grandmother, spoke to the child about burning down her maternal grandmother's house in Pennsylvania.

"Given the actions of the father and paternal grandmother, I find it is not appropriate to resume any form of visitation at this time," Russell wrote in a letter to attorneys. He said he would discuss "our future course" in more detail in his full written opinion.

Previously reported

The mother of a Middle Tennessee teacher who has been missing for two years says she received a disturbing threat from her own granddaughter.

That is just one of the allegations that a judge heard Thursday during a heated custody battle involving the family of Shelley Mook.

Mook was last seen in February 2011 at her ex-husband's home, and police later found her burned car in Murfreesboro.

While they have yet to find any trace of the middle school teacher, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation considers her ex-husband, Tyler Mook, a suspect.

Now, Shelley Mook's mother has custody of the Mooks' 8-year-old daughter. She claims in court the girl told her she was going to kill her after allegedly getting a pocket knife and matches from Tyler Mook.

Tyler Mook said the claims are absolutely false, but now the judge will decide who to believe.

Shelley Mook's mother, Debrah Sikora, said the girl left a message on a dry erase board saying: "I myt kil you that is ol I got to say."

After talking with a counselor, the child allegedly said Tyler Mook told her to light Sikora's house on fire by setting fire under a bed.

Tyler Mook is adamant it's a lie and said if the child had matches and planned to set the house on fire, the plan was her own in order to get back with her dad in Tennessee.

After the incident, Sikora took out an order of protection against Tyler Mook and his mother. She claims they violated it when two other family members, allegedly captured in footage by surveillance video, showed up at her door.

More than a dozen character witnesses for Tyler Mook showed up at the courthouse Thursday, including the mayor of Franklin County and Tyler Mook's pastor, but the question remains whether Tyler Mook should be considered a fit father or a dangerous one - the kind who would give matches to an 8-year-old and tell her to commit a crime.

The judge is expected to rule Friday morning on whether the order of protection will be allowed to stand

UPDATE: New updates in the case of Shelly Mook, a missing teacher who lived in Murfreesboro

Published: February 26, 2013

The former husband of Shelly Mook, the Bedford County teacher who has been missing since February of 2011, has again failed to gain custody of his daughter through the courts.

In 2011, the car that belonged to Shelly Mook was found abandoned and burned just south of Murfreesboro on the Rutherford / Bedford County line. Directly after Mook’s disappearance, Tyler Mook gained custody of his daughter. A week later, the mother of Shelly Mook, Debra Sikora, gained custody of the child.

Prior to the mysterious disappearance of Mook, she and her husband divorced in 2009. During their brief marriage, Tyler allegedly submitted Shelly to domestic violence, according to court documents. After the divorce, Shelly received primary custody rights of their daughter. Approximately two years later, Shelly Mook and her daughter moved to Murfreesboro. Shortly after that move, she disappeared.

Ever since the disappearance of Shelly Mook, Tyler Mook and his parents have been fighting the mother of Shelly (Debra Sikora) and the courts to regain custody of his daughter. Despite his attempted efforts, he has not gained full custody of the child and documents suggest that he has had a past drug problem that might endanger the child. During an evidentiary hearing that occurred in July of 2011, “numerous witnesses testified to Father’s history of illegal drug use, drug trafficking, violent behavior, and verbal and physical abuse towards Mother.”

On Monday (2/25/13), The Supreme Court of Tennessee denied Tyler Mook and his parents from appealing the custody case in order to seek parenting rights of the child.  The little girl is currently living with her maternal grandmother in Pennsylvania.

As far as the disappearance of Shelly Mook goes, there are no new leads in the case. The TN Bureau of Investigation is still investigating. Although her body has not been found, law enforcement beleive that Mook is likely dead.
