Glendale PD: No arrest imminent in missing girl case

by Jim Cross/KTAR    (January 20th, 2012 @ 10:45am)

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It has been just over four months since five-year-old Jhessye Shockley was reported missing by her mother Jerice Hunter, who remains the primary focus of the investigation.

Hunter was jailed briefly after the girl vanished before the county attorney dropped child abuse charges to prevent a double jeopardy situation in the event that first-degree murder charges are filed.

"We are progressing down the path toward making an arrest of the person or persons responsible for Jhessye's death," Glendale Police Sgt Brent Coombs said.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Glendale police have set a date to launch a landfill search for the body of Jhessye Shockley, the 5-year-old who disappeared in early October.

Crews plan to start the operation at the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile on Monday, Feb. 6. While the planning and preparation continues, the Glendale Police Department has identified the people who will be involved and the equipment they will use. Final preparations for the massive search include scheduling, train and medical screenings for the personnel who will be doing the heavy lifting.

According to Sgt. Brent Coombs of the Glendale Police Department, there will be more than 40 people on site every day of the search, which could go on for several weeks.

Jhessye Shockley Missing: Crews Search Landfill For Arizona Girl's Body

First Posted: 02/ 6/2012 4:53 pm Updated: 02/ 6/2012 4:53 pm

Crews trudged through an Arizona landfill this morning on day one of a renewed search for missing girl Jhessye Shockley.

Police believe that the body of Shockley -- who went missing Oct. 11, 2011 -- was disposed of in a waste bin and then deposited in Mobile's Butterfield Landfield, according to ABC-15.

A group of 40 people, some FBI employees and others from the Child Abduction Response Team, began searching what is the state's largest landfill at approximately 7 am Monday morning.

"We want nothing more than to find Jhessye and hold the person who is responsible for her death accountable," police Chief Steve Conrad said, according to CBS-5.

Glendale girl not found on second day of landfill search

by Lisa Halverstadt and Kayla Frost on Feb. 07, 2012, under Arizona Republic News

Crews found no sign of a missing 5-year-old Glendale girl on Tuesday, their second day searching a landfill south of the Valley.

But police said the meticulous process to find the remains of Jhessye Shockley, reported missing nearly four months ago, is becoming smoother.

Crews are adjusting to the painstaking process, which is laden with protocols and procedures, Glendale police spokeswoman Tracey Breeden said.

Heavy-equipment operators first move trash to a search pad at the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile, Breeden said.

Still no sign of missing Glendale girl

Posted: Feb 24, 2012 6:52 PM

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have searched a landfill south of Phoenix for three weeks without finding a missing Glendale girl's remains.

A team of officers aimed to sift through about 30 dump truck loads of trash at the Butterfield Station Landfill on Friday.

They temporarily halted their search after they discovered bones for the first time. A medical examiner later determined the bones were from an animal.

Glendale police say they'll likely deploy additional resources to the landfill in coming days.

Next week, police will extend their search time by about 90 minutes a day and may begin using cadaver dogs from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to assist.

Police believe the body of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was disposed days before her mother reported her missing Oct. 11.

MOBILE, AZ (CBS5AZ) - The search continues for the body of Jhessye Shockley after it was temporarily halted when crews came upon skeletal remains Friday afternoon.

Glendale police took photos of the bones from the Butterfield Station Landfill and sent them to a forensic anthropologist who determined they were animal bones.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is considering providing their cadaver dogs to assist in the search.

Glendale Police told us today they are extending their search schedule next week by adding another 90 minutes each day.

No remains of missing Arizona girl found after 1 month of searching landfill south of Phoenix

By Associated Press, Published: March 2, 2012

PHOENIX — Authorities have searched a landfill south of Phoenix for one month now without finding a missing girl’s remains.

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/zF1Lr0) says police from the Phoenix suburb of Glendale and other area agencies have combed through about 1,500 tons of trash at the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile.

That’s about one quarter of the 6,000 tons police aim to sift through in hopes of finding the remains of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley of Glendale.

Police believe the girl’s body was disposed of days before her mother reported her missing Oct. 11 and the mother still is the focus of their case.

The landfill search began Feb. 6.

Cadaver dogs from the Maricopa County sheriff’s posse and a new group of officers — many of them from Phoenix — will begin assisting with the search next week.

Jhessye Shockley

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - We have an update on a high profile missing child case in Arizona: Jhessye Shockley of Glendale.

Officers are now in their 16th week of digging for the child's body in a landfill south of the valley and they believe they will be digging through the month of June.

"We're finding trash from the area close to the area where we believe Jhessye was disposed..in a trash receptacle..but as far as that goes, we are looking for her remains."

Jhessye disappeared in October.  Authorities believe she was killed, her body dumped in a trash bin in Tempe.  Her mother has been the focus of attention for months, although no one has officially been named as a suspect.

Landfill search ends for a missing Arizona girl

Published 01:45 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The search of a Phoenix-area landfill for the body of a Glendale girl missing since October has ended without finding her remains.

Glendale police said at a news conference Wednesday that no significant discovery of evidence directly connected to the 5-year-old's death was found.

Hundreds of volunteer police personnel sifted through thousands of tons of trash in a 36,000-square-foot area of the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile since Feb. 6. Police believe Jhessye Shockley's body was disposed of days before her mother reported her missing Oct. 11.

The woman was arrested in November on suspicion of child abuse. She was later released from jail and the charge dropped after prosecutors said they wanted to investigate further.

It's unclear whether authorities want to pursue a murder case without the girl's body.

Mother of missing Arizona girl arrested again

09/06/2012

The mother of an Arizona girl who's been missing since October has been re-arrested in the case.

Glendale police say Jerice Hunter was taken into custody Thursday afternoon and is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and child abuse. Police have scheduled a news conference for later in the day.

Investigators believe the body of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was disposed of days before Hunter reported her missing on Oct. 11.

A 96-day search at a Phoenix-area landfill ended in late June without finding the girl's remains.

Hunter was arrested in November on suspicion of child abuse. She later was released from jail and the charge dropped after prosecutors said they wanted to investigate further.

Police say Hunter previously served time in a California prison for abusing her older children.

Mom of Missing Arizona Girl Jahessye Shockley Charged With Murder

By CHRISTINA NG (@ChristinaNg27)
Sept. 7, 2012

The mother of Jahessye Shockley, a 5-year-old Arizona girl who has been missing for nearly a year, was arrested and charged with felony child abuse and first-degree murder for her daughter's death.

"For the past 11 months, the men and women of the Glendale Police Department and our partners from local, state and federal law enforcement worked tirelessly to accomplish two goals: to find Jahessye and to hold the person responsible for her disappearance accountable," Glendale Chief of Police Debora Black said in a statement.

They have yet to find Jahessye, but Black said authorities were confident they would achieve their second goal with the arrest of Jerice Hunter on Thursday.

Shockley was first reported missing nearly a year ago on Oct. 11, 2011. After an initial investigation and an extensive search, Hunter was arrested on Nov. 21 on suspicion of child abuse. She was later released and no charges were filed.

Authorities are tight-lipped about what evidence led to this week's arrest and charges.

"[The] investigation has turned up information and evidence of varying kinds and when it was re-submitted to our office for review, we felt that there was enough evidence there to support the charges handed up in the indictment," Maricopa County Attorney spokesman Jerry Cobb told ABCNews.com today.

"I can't get into any specifics about the nature or type of evidence," he said.

Hunter's attorney Scott Maasen takes issue with the lack of transparency in the alleged evidence against his client.

"They don't have a body. They haven't found Jahessye," he said. "When you have a case where it takes that much time, it really calls into question the believability, the reliability, of whatever type of evidence they have."

Maasen that he met with Hunter in jail and that she is "in good spirits, considering the circumstances."

"She has maintained her innocence from day one when she reported her missing almost a year ago," Maasen said. "In every conversation I've had with her, she's been steadfast in that."

He is "confident" that Hunter will be exonerated once he receives the evidence in the case.

Investigators did not find Shockleys' body after a four-month search of the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile, but maintain that her body is in a landfill.

Jahessye was last seen by her three older siblings at their apartment building while Hunter said she was out running an errand. She said she left her three older children doing chores in the backyard and locked Jahessye inside so she would be safe.

Hunter's four other children, ages 6, 9, 13 and an infant, are in state custody, according to authorities.

Hunter's criminal history of allegedly abusing her children drew public suspicion to what role, if any, she might have played in her daughter's disappearance.

Hunter was charged with child abuse in 2006. According to court documents, Hunter was "accused of torturing her 7-year-old daughter and of causing corporal injuries to three of her other children" in California. Her children told police that Hunter would punch them and whip them, sometimes using extension cords.

Maasen said that the children later changed their stories.

Police said Hunter's ex-husband George Shockley also participated in the alleged abuse. He is currently in prison following his conviction as a sex offender.

Convicted of four counts of child abuse in the 2006 case, Hunter was sentenced to eight years in a California prison and lost an appeal. Prosecutors dropped the torture charges in exchange for a plea of no contest, according to ABC's Phoenix affiliate KNXV-TV. However, it is unclear why Hunter was released early from prison.

Report: Witness said missing Glendale girl's mom disposed of suitcase

by D.S. Woodfill and Christopher Williams

Oct. 10, 2012 10:15 AM

The mother of missing 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley disposed of a large, heavy and foul smelling suitcase days before the Glendale child was reported missing, according to a witness statement released with other investigation files Tuesday.

The Glendale Police Department released this week 1,400 pages from its investigation, which provided case details never before disclosed.

Jhessye's mother, Jerice Hunter, has been charged with the child's murder. Hunter, who had served time in a California prison for abusing her older children, reported her daughter missing Oct. 11, 2011. The girl's disappearance triggered a massive effort to locate the girl, but her body was never found.

Among the details recently released, investigators say a woman said she gave Hunter a ride to a Tempe apartment complex about 7 to 15 days before Jhessye's was reported missing. The witness told police Hunter disposed of the large suitcase, according to the report.

"When Jerice got into the car with the witness she apologized for the smell of the suitcase," the report said. "After they arrived at an apartment complex in the city of Tempe, Jerice Hunter took the large suitcase from the trunk of the vehicle and placed it into a dumpster."

Cadaver dogs indicated there was a scent of blood in the Gold color 4-door Chevrolet Lumina.

Documents released by police also show investigators looked for evidence of blood and other bodily fluids in the apartment where the girl lived and found traces of spatter on walls and hand prints, but police would neither confirm or deny that the substance that left those patterns was indeed blood.

Interviews with family members and friends show many were concerned for Jhessye's well being in the time leading up to her disappearance.

Investigators spoke to Hunter's cousins Tycora Cole, Mahogany Hightower and Victor Rice in the days after Jhessye was reported missing.

Cole and Rice broke down into tears during their interviews as they described one of the last times they saw their "princess" at a barbecue in April 2011, the report says.

Cole and Rice noticed that Jhessye had a burn mark, which Cole said looked like it may have come from an iron or a stove, and some of her teeth appeared to be knocked out. Cole told investigators the normally direct Jhessye became uncomfortable and hesitant when asked what happened to her teeth, according to the report.

Hunter's cousin Lisa Vance said the woman was taking pills and "would sleep all day and ramble all night long" when she came to live with her after serving her prison sentence.

Vance also reported that one of the children told her about instances of abuse in the home once Jhessye returned to her mother's care.

The child told her "that she knows for a fact that Jerice hadn't been treating Jhessye right," the report says. The child told the woman that Jhessye "had bruises all over" and that Hunter made Jhessye stay in a room for four weeks and only allowed her to come out if she needed to use the bathroom. The child also said Hunter fed Jhessye different food from the rest of other children, according to the police report.

Police learned from the grandmother of a 9-year-old girl who played at the Hunter residence that when she visited Hunter's house before Jhessye's disappearance, she came across the tot lying in a closet.
