Candlelight vigil held for missing girl

Come home" was the message at the candlelight vigil for Kayla Chadwick, a 17-year-old girl who has been missing for three weeks.

Candles and about 100 supporters spread out all over Fort Morgan City Park, lighting the way for Chadwick to come home, one speaker said.

Chadwick was last seen about 11 p.m. on March 27 after a fight with her boyfriend in the 19500 block of Morgan County Road R.7, said friend Chastity Houser during the ceremony.

Chadwick was expected to walk home after that but never came home.

Houser quoted Morgan County Sheriff Jim Crone, who has pleaded with people to come forward if they know something about why Chadwick is missing. Every hour she is missing increases the chances she will be harmed or never be seen again.
"Kayla, every day we wonder if you are OK," Houser said. "We'll never stop searching until you come home."

Houser thanked the media for its coverage and others for their donations of fliers to publicize the missing girl, and asked people to continue letting people know about Chadwick.

Music such as "A Mother's Prayer," "Come Home" and "So Far Away" played while the crowd held candles on the windy night.

Houser read a poem written by Chadwick's mother, Robin Adams. In one stanza, it said, "Wherever a lost child may be tonight, I let one candle burn."

Although Adams had planned to speak, she was too emotional.

For a long time, no one said anything.

";We can't even imagine how her family is feeling," said Bobbi Meng.

One of the hardest unanswered questions is "where is she," Meng said.

Those who love her need to reach out to God and ask God's help in finding Chadwick, Meng said before reading from scripture.

"We lift this mother to you this day," Meng said.

"We are going to pray that Kayla will be safe, and she will come home to us," Meng said.

She also asked the crowd to pray for all those who are searching for Chadwick, including law officers.

Chadwick has been considered both an endangered runaway and missing person, and law enforcement officials still do not have any information that tells what has happened to her, Houser said.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that she was taken against her will.

Anyone with information on Chadwick should contact the Fort Morgan Police Department at 970-867-5678.

Crimestoppers is offering a $500 reward for information about the whereabouts of Chadwick.

Callers remain anonymous when reporting to Crimestoppers.

Whereabouts Of Fort Morgan Teen Remain A Mystery

April 21, 2012 11:58 PM

FORT MORGAN, Colo. (CBS4) – Dozens of volunteers in Fort Morgan joined the search to find Kayla Chadwick. The 17-year-old was last seen March 27 while walking home late that night.

More than 100 people searched for Chadwick. They scoured the area where she was last seen off East 8th Avenue and the banks of the Platte River.

The case has been confusing for Chadwick’s family and law enforcement. They simply don’t have any idea what might have happened to her. The last known report was that she had gone to her boyfriend’s home just five blocks from where she lives.

There are reports of some sort of confrontation between her and her boyfriend. The last time she was in contact with her family was around 10 p.m. the night she disappeared. Police said their last known record of Chadwick is from a text message to came into her phone just after midnight.

There is no evidence to show what might have happened to Chadwick. That has made the family very upset.

“She just vanished from his house. It’s not possible. Somebody has seen something. Somebody knows something,” Chadwick’s mother Robin Adams said.

The family said Chadwick did run away from home two years ago. They don’t believe she would have run away with just a few months left in her senior year of high school.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children issued a caution saying that Chadwick may have a gun.

FORT MORGAN, Colo. -- Fort Morgan Police continue their investigation into a missing 17-year-old Fort Morgan girl, and are still asking for the public’s help.

Investigators say there has been no breakthrough in the 34-day search for Kayla Chadwick, a senior at Fort Morgan High School.

Chadwick was reported missing from the Fort Morgan area in the area of the 19500 block of County Road R.7, East 8th Avenue. She was last seen in the late evening hours of March 27 walking home from that location but she never arrived.

Police have investigated dozens of tips since her disappearance, aided by the Morgan County Sheriff's Department and FBI.

Chadwick had recently been involved in a physical argument with her boyfriend, according to police. The boyfriend has been interviewed and is cooperating with the investigation, they said.

The reward for information in the case has risen to $7,500, with $7,000 of that amount from private donations and a $500 reward from Crimestoppers.

"This has been a very frustrating case for the family, community and police," said Fort Morgan Police Chief Keith Kuretich. "In fact, the community has been very responsive and has been assisting in doing searches around Fort Morgan and Morgan County since Kayla’s disappearance."

Chadwick was last seen wearing blue jeans, a plaid shirt covering a black lace spaghetti strap shirt, and black shoes. She was described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing 135 pounds, having red hair with black tips and brown eyes.

Kuretich said he hopes to continue to add additional ways for the public to send tips to law enforcement.

The local Crime Stoppers telephone line is 970-542-3411 or anyone with information can call the police department at 970-867-5678.
