Disappearance of Fox executive not a homicide case, sheriff says
May 11, 2012 | 7:14 am
Detectives said they had few solid leads in the disappearance of a longtime 20th Century Fox executive, Gavin Smith, who distributed such hits as "Titanic" and "Avatar," but didn't believe foul play was involved.
"It's an adult missing-persons case, not a homicide," said sheriff's Lt. Wes Sutton. "At this point, there's nothing criminal [related] to his disappearance."
Sutton said that information on Smith had been distributed within the sheriff's department and that his vehicle information has been added to a missing vehicles database should another police agency find it.
In addition, sheriff's officials have distributed fliers and appealed through the media for the public's help.
"We're getting lots of tips," Sutton said, but detectives still don't have a firm sense of what happened.
Smith's family and authorities have been unable to locate him either through cellphone records or credit card billings.
"We're praying and hoping for the best," Smith's eldest son, Evan, a USC basketball player, said Thursday. "It's all in God's hands."
In interviews this week, Smith's family described some of the circumstances leading up to the night he vanished. Smith was staying with a friend near Ventura County's Oak Park neighborhood but drove away in his Mercedes between 9 and 10 p.m. without telling anyone, which the family said was unusual.
Wearing a pair of purple athletic pants belonging to one of his sons, Smith left behind his cellphone charger, shaving kit and other items.
"That's what he was wearing, you know?" Evan Smith told "Good Morning America" in an interview. "It doesn't sound like he was going anywhere."
Smith's family said he hasn't gone to his Calabasas office since he disappeared. They declined to elaborate on why he was staying with the friend instead of at the family home in West Hills, but Evan Smith tweeted last month that his father had left the family.
"Thoughts and prayers out to my amazing Mom and bros plz," the he wrote in an April 14 message. "My dad decided to leave the family last nite. Real family sticks together."
The tweet has since been deleted, but Evan Smith told E! News his parents were not separated.
"They were just going through normal stuff couples go through," he said.
Evan Smith told The Times his family was "devastated" by his father's disappearance but was "staying strong." They've created a website, findgavinsmith.com, to help coordinate search efforts.
Smith is 6 feet 6, weighs 210 pounds and has a goatee and gray hair streaked with blond. He was last seen in his black 2000 Mercedes 420-E with California license plate 6EKT044.
Investigators are asking that anyone with information call (323) 890-5500.

Man's body closes Angeles Crest
Ballistics evidence recovered, cause of death may have been gunshot.
May 12, 2012|By Joe Piasecki
The discovery of a man’s body alongside a guardrail on the Angeles Crest Highway Thursday prompted an all-day road closure as authorities investigated the scene well into the evening.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials did not release the man’s identity, but confirmed that it was not a missing 20th Century Fox executive, 57-year-old Gavin Smith, who was last seen May 1 near his Oak Park home.
Los Angeles County coroner spokesman Craig Harvey said the man may have suffered a gunshot wound, but an official cause of death was pending further investigation.
The body was discovered about 5:15 a.m. by a passing motorist near the first turnout above the Angeles National Forest snow gate, about 2.7 miles north of the Foothill (210) Freeway near mile marker 27, said sheriff’s Sgt. Debra Herman.
A statement issued by the sheriff’s department said ballistic evidence was recovered at the scene, but few other details were released.

Plea of Missing Fox Executive's Siblings: "Call Us"
They spoke about their brother Wednesday as a seach was planned for this weekend
By Melissa Pamer and Gordon Tokumatsu | Wednesday, May 16, 2012 | Updated 5:38 PM PDT
Siblings of 20th Century Fox distribution executive and former UCLA basketball player Gavin Smith said Wednesday that they wanted desperately to hear from their brother, who has been missing for two weeks.
Meeting with media in Reno, Nevada, they said the search for their brother continues.
Smith, 57, was last seen driving away from a friend's home in the 500 block of Kellwood Court in the Ventura County community of Oak Park on the evening of May 1.
He left in a black 2000 Mercedes-Benz 420E with license plate No. 6EKT044. The car's model number had been changed to a 500E, according to authorities.
Smith had recent financial difficulties that led to a default on his mortgage, family members have learned.
"If he's out there and he's trying to chill and get his thoughts together, I just want to say, 'Gavin, please call us,'" said younger brother Greg on Wednesday.
In his West Hills community, neighbors were talking this week about a planned civilian search effort.
"Everyone had speculations and we're all trying to figure out what happened," said neighbor Joni Lerner. "This is a man who adored his children. They would be out playing basketball. … I can't imagine him walking away. I can't imagine someone wanting to hurt him."
FindGavinSmith.com, a website started to draw attention to Smith's case, asked supporters to plan for a two-day search in "remote areas" this weekend.
Detectives have considered that Smith's car may have plunged off a mountain road, Smith's siblings said Wednesday. It's one of many possibilities that family members say they have considered.
His sister Tara Addeo teared up discussing what could have happened to Gavin Smith.
"I don't like to think the worst," she said.

WEEKEND SEARCH FOR MISSING FOX EXEC CALLED OFF
Tim Kenneally, Reuters
May 18, 2012, 2:17 am
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - A search for missing Fox executive Gavin Smith that had been planned for this weekend has been called off.
A spokesman for Smith's family said that the search - for which the family was hoping to enlist the public's help - was canceled because a search area had not been pinpointed.
"After consultations between the LA County Sheriff's Department and the Gavin Smith family, it has been decided that there will be NO search this weekend," the spokesman said in a statement. "There is not a specific area of defined interest to make this effort productive at this time."
Smith, an 18-year veteran at Fox, was last seen on the night of May 1 in Oak Park, Calif., according to a bulletin released by law enforcement officials.
According to law enforcement, Smith's black 2000 Mercedes 420E bears the license plate number 6EKT044. According to the bulletin, Smith stands 6 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 210 pounds, and has grey hair with blond highlights, green eyes and a goatee.
Other identifying features include a scar of about five inches on his calf and another scar about four inches long on his inner right wrist.
He was last seen wearing purple pants, and black and grey shoes.
Smith works in Fox's Calabasas office and is the branch manager for theaters in Dallas and Oklahoma City.
