Feds Join Police Effort To Track Down Missing FBI Agent

May 14, 2012 10:22 AM
Reporting Pete Demetriou

BURBANK (CBS) — Federal investigators were assisting police on Monday in the search for a missing FBI agent from Burbank.

KNX 1070′s Pete Demetriou reports police have indicated they will now concentrate their efforts on the area directly surrounding the home of Stephen Ivens.

Ivens, 35, was first reported missing on Friday when he was last spotted by relatives at his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road.

Officials on Saturday described Ivens as distraught and possibly suicidal after his service weapon was found missing from his apartment.

Over 150 personnel from the FBI, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and police units initially centered their investigation on the Verdugo foothills after bloodhounds tracked Ivens’ scent in the surrounding area.

Burbank Police Capt. Dennis Cremins said investigators still are unsure of Iven’s whereabouts.

“There’s no evidence of foul play right now, but that’s why we still have a robust effort to locate him,” said Cremins.

Police will now shift their focus to a traditional missing persons investigation while federal investigators take over the more extensive search in the hills above Burbank and Glendale.

The FBI is working to determine whether Ivens’ work in the national security section of the Bureau’s Los Angeles office played any role in his disappearance.

Authorities stop searching Verdugo Mountains for missing FBI agent
'Please reach out and let us know you are OK,' wife pleads at press conference.

May 23, 2012|By Jason Wells and Veronica Rocha, Times Community News

Authorities have stopped actively combing local mountains and hillsides for an FBI agent who went missing from his Burbank home nearly two weeks ago, instead basing their search on tips from the public, a police official said Wednesday.

The decision came after a search carried out Saturday by teams from the Ventura and Los Angeles County sheriff’s departments turned up empty, Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn said.

In the days after the May 11 disappearance of 35-year-old FBI agent Stephen Ivens from his Burbank home in the 1700 block of Scott Road, authorities from several agencies mounted a massive search — initially focused on the nearby Verdugo Mountains — using helicopters, dogs and foot patrols.

It took on added urgency because officials said he likely had his department-issued gun and could be a danger to himself, although they declined to say why.

But with no progress, Ryburn said the effort had turned into a search driven by leads from the public — of which there have been few.

Wife Of Missing FBI Agent Breaks Silence With Emotional Plea

June 12, 2012 11:13 PM

BURBANK (CBS) — The wife of a missing FBI agent Tuesday made a desperate plea for new clues, as her family prepared for a painful week marking his birthday and Father’s Day.

Thea Ivens broke her silence and told us that she planned on passing out flyers with hope of keeping her husband’s missing case alive.

“I don’t want to lose hope that he’s alive,” Ivens said, breaking down in tears in her Burbank home.

She described the pain that she had endured for more than a month.

“My husband is still missing. It’s someone out there. There is someone, who might have seen or know about his disappearance, who might have seen him. And hopefully he will reach out — he or she will reach out to us,” she said.

Ivens told us that her husband, Steven Ivens, 36, has been her best friend and soul mate for a decade.

Ivens, an FBI agent who once worked as an LAPD officer out of the Hollywood Division, mysteriously vanished from his Burbank neighborhood the evening of May 11.

Thea said she woke up to him being gone the next day.

“I think that’s what’s… I think that’s what hurts the most, because it’s going to be his birthday on Thursday and it’s going to be Father’s Day on Sunday,” she said.

Authorities have exhausted searches around local mountains and have very few leads.

We were told that Ivens likes to run and and walk. Thea said that his disappearance is unusual and out of character. She said he enjoys being a father to their 2-year-old boy and was always responsible.

“He remembers or realizes how much we miss him and love him so much,” she said.

The family said that Ivens had been suffering from depression at the time of his disappearance.

A news conference was expected to be held Wednesday afternoon, released more details.

Wife of Missing FBI Agent Makes Public Plea for Help

BURBANK, Calif. (KTLA) -- The wife of a missing FBI agent is appealing for the public's help in finding Stephen Ryan Ivens on the eve of his 36th birthday.

Ivens was last seen May 11 at his home in Burbank.

According to his wife, Thea, Ivens was being treated for depression when he vanished with only his keys and FBI-issued pistol.

Authorities have called off the formal search for Ivens, but family members continue to search the Verdugo Hills and checking homeless shelters.

Ivens, 35, is believed to have walked away from his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road in Burbank, headed toward the Verdugo Mountains.

Authorities from several agencies mounted a massive search effort in the days after his disappearance, using helicopters, dogs and foot patrols.

Thea Iven's said her husband is "more than just a missing person."

At a news conference Wednesday, Thea Iven's reached out to her husband.

“Please, Steve, babe, I love you, and I miss you, and please reach out to us and let us know that you are okay.”

Ivens has been working at the FBI for more than three years as an agent specializing in national security.

He is also the father of a 1-year-old son and an avid hiker.

Thea Ivens described Stephen as kind, generous, quiet and loving, but said he hadn't been himself since February.

She said he had been receiving help for whatever was troubling him, and that it was not related to his job or his home life.

Ivens is 6 feet tall and 160 pounds, with brown eyes, receding brown hair and prescription glasses.

Family members are organizing a search set for June 16.

Volunteers can contact the family on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/letsbringstevehome.

Anyone with information about Stephen Ivens or his whereabouts may call police at (818) 238-3000, or the FBI at (310) 477-6565.

Friends, family hold candlelight vigil for missing FBI agent
Wife of man gone for 60 days pleads for 'a new beginning, a new chapter.'

July 12, 2012
By Maria Hsin

Amid the chatter of children, the bouncing of balls and the movement of dog walkers, about 60 people gathered at McCambridge Park in Burbank Wednesday evening to pray for the safe return of FBI special agent Stephen Ivens, who was reported missing two months ago.

The park is not far from the Ivens' home in the 1700 block of Scott Road, where the 36-year-old agent was last seen.

“This is familiar ground for us,” his wife, Thea Ivens, said before the prayer vigil began. “This is one of the places he jogged around. He usually brings [our son] Kyle here to play. This is a meaningful place for us.”

The group formed a circle around two tables that displayed candles and a photo of Stephen Ivens. A bag containing 60 Monarch butterflies, one for each day since the agent was reported missing – was placed on one of the tables.

Releasing the butterflies was a nod to what happened eight years ago at the couple’s wedding.

“[The butterflies] were a symbol of a new beginning and a new life,” Thea Ivens said after candles were lit and the group took turns reading from passages from the Bible’s book of Psalms. “It is my promise to him that this can still be a new beginning, a new chapter.

“When the time comes, we hope he will come back to us safely, and soon.”

The gathering marked the third time in two months Ivens' family has appealed directly to the public in an effort to keep awareness of the case alive.

They have also organized their own search effort beyond what local and federal authorities have conducted, but to no avail.

Jaime Gonzalez, who has known Stephen Ivens since 1999, said they met at the Los Angeles Police Department, where Ivens worked before becoming an FBI agent.

“To me personally, it's upsetting the FBI hasn't taken a more active role,” Gonzalez said. “He's one of theirs now.”

Authorities from several law enforcement agencies initially launched a massive search that included 100 FBI agents. The search took on added urgency because officials said he likely had his department-issued gun with him and could be a danger to himself.

Thea Ivens has said her husband had been suffering from depression.

The FBI and Burbank police have since stopped actively searching for Ivens, relying instead on tips from the public, which they say have all but dried up.

Ivens is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, 140 to 150 pounds, with brown eyes, grayish-brown hair and eyeglasses.

It is believed he left his home on foot and may be wearing dark blue jeans, blue and gray Reebok shoes, a two-tone crucifix necklace and a blue sports watch, according to family.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said in an email that there is “no indication that Steve's disappearance was related to his work; however, we are exploring all avenues to find him.”

Meanwhile, Burbank police Sgt. Darin Ryburn said the department maintains an open line of communication with Thea Ivens and the group assisting her. Beyond that, “there is no new information to report at this time,” he said.

Body of missing FBI agent found behind Burbank church

By Jason Kandel

July 31, 2012

A body found behind a church in Burbank, Calif. is that of missing FBI agent Stephen Ivens, police said on Tuesday.

Police found the body of the 35-year-old agent, who has been missing since early May.

Two hikers, who smelled a suspicious odor, discovered the body on Monday night behind a church on Scott Road in Burbank and reported it to police, said Burbank Police Department Sgt. Darin Ryburn.

Ryburn said police have notified family members of the discovery and believe it's Ivens' body but are awaiting confirmation of the identity from the coroner’s department.

"Every indication is that it's Stephen Ivens," Ryburn said.

Ivens' boss at the FBI was at the scene as were other FBI colleagues. A weapon was recovered. Coroner's officials were working to confirm a cause of death.

Ryburn said it appears the body may have been at the location since Ivens went missing 67 days ago.

Ivens was last seen leaving his Burbank home on May 10.

An avid hiker, Ivens was thought to have ventured into the nearby hills after leaving home distraught.

Police: Body found in Burbank is that of missing FBI agent Stephen Ivens

By Eric Hartley, Staff Writer
Posted:   07/31/2012 10:34:49 AM PDT

The body of FBI Agent Stephen Ivens, who had been missing for more than two months, was discovered Monday night in Burbank.

Two hikers walking in the foothills above the city smelled an odor about 8 p.m., then found badly decomposed human remains, Burbank police Sgt. Darin Ryburn said.

A weapon was found with the body, which was behind a Catholic school about a mile and a half from Ivens' home.

Investigators secured the scene overnight, and this morning the Los Angeles County coroner's office and the FBI were at the scene. Ivens' family has been notified, Ryburn said.

Asked about the state of the body, he said, "How long has it been since he's been missing? Let's just leave it at that."

Ivens has been missing since early May. He left home with his service weapon.

His family said the 6-foot-1 agent, who would have turned 36 last month, had been depressed and on the verge of a breakdown over events at work unrelated to his criminal caseload. His wife, Thea, has said he couldn't sleep and had anxiety attacks each morning before work.

The family sought media attention and set up a website, letsbringstevehome.com, on which Thea Ivens wrote frequently.

"She never gave up," said Kissette Kelly, a close friend of the family. "She was taking care of a 2-year-old, working full time -- but at the same time she also needed to take the lead on searching for Steve and bringing him back home."

Thea Ivens' most recent post on the website, titled "80 Days" and written Sunday, recalled her husband's love of New England sports teams and how he used Skype so his mother, on the East Coast, could see her young grandson in California.

"It's just strange doing a video chat with my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law without Steve around," she wrote. "One of my (hopes) is that if for some reason Steve couldn't get back to California, somehow he would reach out to his mom and sister, back in his hometown in Massachusetts."

Kelly said the lack of any clues in recent weeks had given Thea and other loved ones hope that perhaps Ivens "was just out there, alive, and wanting to have time to himself."

"I never imagined this to come to this end," Kelly said today. "I just never did."

Online community reacts to discovery of FBI agent's body in Burbank

July 31, 2012 | 2:21 p.m.

As family and friends of FBI agent Stephen Ivens grappled with news that his body had been discovered in the foothills above Burbank Monday night, reaction poured in on a website set up by his wife for the search effort.

Burbank police today said Ivens' body was discovered by two hikers Monday night near the 3600 block of Scott Road, ending a more than two-month long search effort.

The cause of death had yet to be determined, pending an investigation by the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Stephen Ivens wife, Thea, declined to immediately speak to a reporter in the field today, but reaction to the discovery online today was reflected in what FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller called "a sad day, not only for the Ivens family, but for law enforcement as well.”

Missing Agent's Remains

The Los Angeles County Coroners Office said Thursday human remains found along a fire road in the hills above Burbank had been confirmed as those of missing FBI agent Stephen Ivens.

An autopsy was pending that authorities hoped would help explain how and when Ivens died.

Hikers on a fire road near Scott Road reported the remains Monday night after smelling something foul.

Burbank Police said the remains were hidden under heavy brush and a handgun was found near the body.

Ivens vanished in early May.
