The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office is seeking help from the public as it works to find an area girl who is believed to have been missing since July 27.
Sheriff Dave Phalen said detectives have turned up no leads in finding 16-year-old Julie Estep, an area teen who reportedly left home last month and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
“We really haven’t been able to get any leads talking to friends and relatives,” Phalen said.
“If anyone knows anything or has heard from her, they should call us.”
Phalen said Estep originally is from Akron, Ohio, and she took some personal items when she left home.
Sheriff’s Office officials said they don’t know if Estep returned to Akron.
Phalen said he doesn’t have reason to believe she was abducted, but the investigation of her disappearance is a high priority.
“We are concerned,” he said.
“There’s always the possibility she could’ve met someone online through a chat room or something like that,” Phalen said.
“The concern for us is we have just not come up with anything.
“When we have a 16-year-old gone this long and she hasn’t contacted anyone and we haven’t gotten any information, it’s always a reason for concern,” Phalen said.
Estep is described as a 16-year-old, white female who is 5-feet, one-inch tall and weighs 165 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.
Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office Detective Jason Meadows said detectives are reviewing an email account for Estep and she had recently contacted people from the Akron and Massilon, Ohio, areas – where she lived until she was about 9 years old – but the emails hadn’t turned up anything “viable” that would suggest where the teen might have gone.
Sheriff’s Office officials said they were not sure what school Estep attended, but they believe she is a student at Liberty Union High School.
Liberty Union High School officials declined to say if Estep attended classes there, citing district policy.
Pickerington Local School District officials said Estep was not a student in that district.Anyone with information regarding the girl’s location is asked to contact the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office at 740-652-7900 or toll free at 1-800-808-5223.
