One Woman Thinks Remains May Be Her Sister-In-Law
Barbara Lenz Disappeared 17 Years Ago

POSTED: 8:56 am CDT May 16, 2006
UPDATED: 10:29 am CDT May 16, 2006

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- Karen Lenz is one of dozens of people who have stepped forward to ask Pottawattamie County investigators to find out whether a woman's body found in a barrel last week might be her sister-in-law.

Mushroom hunters found the remains of a woman believed to have been murdered and sealed in a barrel years ago in Council Bluffs. Pottawattamie County officials said on Friday that the body was discovered Saturday, and tests were performed this week to learn more about the victim.

Dozens of phone calls have poured into Pottawattamie County authorities since the discovery. Investigators haven't been able to pinpoint exactly when the woman died, opening the door for families looking for closure.

Karen Lenz said her 31-year-old sister-in-law, Barbara, disappeared 17 years ago.

"She had a little 3 year old. She's now 20," Lenz said.

Lenz said her sister had been visiting her mother every day in the Missouri Valley Hospital as she struggled with pneumonia.

"Then she didn't show up for two days. She was very upset, mom was, and set us up to check on her," Lenz said.

Barbara Lenz lived about 17 miles northeast of Missouri Valley in Woodbine. When her family checked on her apartment, they immediately became suspicious," Lenz said. "The coffee pot was on -- half full. The purse was there. The car was there. The keys were there. The laundry was half folded, half not."

The woman was never found, and her family heard rumors she had been buried in a barrel. That made last week's discovery resonate for the Lenzes, but they've been in this position before.

"Every time they ask for dental records, hopes goes up, then diminish," Karen Lenz said.

Pottawattamie County investigators said their No. 1 priority is to identify the woman, and hope to know more by week's end.

My Note: Dental records proved that the woman in the barrel was not Barbara.

Along with the Featured Missing Adult and Featured Missing Child section on our main site front page, we added a section called "Always Remembered". Just as with the other featured persons, those in "Always Remembered" will remain on the main page for one month. Barbara Lenz is the January 2010 Always Remembered featured missing person.

The section was created to renew awareness for the long-term missing, and we encourage our readers to take another look at the case, and place posters where appropriate. It also reflects the Project Jason motto: "All missing persons are loved by someone, and their families deserve to find the answers they seek in regards to the disappearance."

Please see http://www.projectjason.org/ to view the Always Remembered case.
