Man may have called before vanishing

While crews concluded their search of canyons for an 18-year-old man missing since Sept. 3 on Saturday, Enoch police believe he may have placed a call to Idaho before disappearing.

Christopher Robin Coan was last seen completing his shift at a local Subway restaurant two weeks ago. However, before leaving work he wrote down "208," which police believe is part of a phone number, said Enoch Police Chief David Browning.

"We are not sure if it's an area code or the first three numbers of a phone number, but it's the area code for Idaho," the chief said.

Anyone with information about Coan's whereabouts is asked to call Enoch police at 435-586-9445.

Searchers look for missing Enoch man

By Ben Winslow
Deseret Morning News
Published: Sept. 7, 2007 8:51 p.m. MDT

Police in southern Utah have launched a massive search for a man who has been missing since Monday.

Christopher Robin Coan, 18, was seen leaving his job at a Subway sandwich shop in Enoch, Iron County, about 8:30 p.m., police said.

"He was last seen by his manager leaving the store," Enoch police detective Jackson Ames said Friday. "This is completely out of character for him."

Coan was reported missing by his girlfriend on Tuesday afternoon. There has been no bank activity, and as more time passes, authorities are beginning to worry that the young man may have met with foul play. Enoch police contacted the FBI for assistance in the case.

An airplane has been searching the high-country desert around Cedar City and Enoch for any sign of Coan's SUV, a 1994 red and silver-colored Chevrolet S-10 Blazer with a temporary tag. Police said the SUV has three stickers in the back. One says "Jerry Bear," another says "The Wizz cartoon," and the third says "Beatles."

On Friday, volunteer searchers went searching for signs of Coan.

"We've got around 100 people or so that have just gone out and are pretty much going to canvass the area," Ames said. "Hopefully, we can find him."

Coan is described as 5-foot-6, about 125 pounds, with blue eyes and blond, floppy hair. He was last seen wearing a green T-shirt and black corduroy pants.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police at 435-586-9445.

Police say tipster reports seeing missing teen's SUV at a gas station near Enoch

By Nathan C. Gonzalez
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 09/10/2007 06:31:55 AM MDT

Enoch police were hoping Sunday a gas station surveillance video may offer some clues in the disappearance of an 18-year-old in southwestern Utah.

A person at a gas station outside of Enoch has reported seeing Christopher Robin Coan's recently purchased four-door 1994 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, said Enoch Police Chief David Browning. An officer was heading out of the city Sunday to review the station surveillance video.

The police chief declined to say where the gas station is located until the video is reviewed, but said the person's description of the Blazer - red with silver trim at the bottom - matched.

Praying for Chris

Candlelight vigil unites friends, family of missing 18-year-old Cedar High grad

By RYAN DIONNE
rdionne@thespectrum.com

CEDAR CITY - The wind may have blown out a few candles Wednesday night, but it didn't blow out hope.

Friends and family of Chris Coan, a recent Cedar High School graduate who has been missing since Labor Day, grasped flickering candles during a vigil organized to help keep the hope alive.

While the 18-year-old hasn't been seen since leaving work Sept. 3, police and his family are following leads to help bring him home.

"We're gonna find Chris sooner or later," his dad, Dave Coan, told a group of about 100 as they huddled together in the stands at Cedar High School's football stadium.
Typically in a missing person

situation a vigil is thought of as a memorial, but Dave Coan said it's nothing of the sort. Instead, it's more of a rally to make sure people know that giving up isn't an option.

Enoch Police officer Dan Raddatz said they are following tips, looking into possible sightings and trying to uncover any lead that may help them find the young man.

Besides focusing their search in Northern Utah - specifically the Logan area - police are hoping to find something when they search through the phone records of the Subway where Chris worked.

Raddatz said they think Coan received a phone call at work the night he disappeared and wrote down a "208" number, which police believe is an Idaho area code.

With the subpoena police obtained Wednesday, they'll be able to search through the phone records to help narrow down the search or eliminate possibilities.

Along with the phone records, Enoch Police Chief Dave Browning said they are focusing on Logan because Chris reportedly met a friend on MySpace who lives there.

But no matter where he is, Chris's girlfriend, Sasha Turner, said she just wants to know he's OK. Even a phone call saying, "I'm fine but don't want to come home," would be fine, she said.

Others like Travis Emans, who just met Chris this summer and was just an acquaintance, said he still wanted to show his support for the family.

After a prayer, moment of silence and low-key performance by Steven Swift, Dave Coan simply thanked people for attending and had one message: "Keep the hope alive."

Salt Lake City Police Desperately Searching for Christopher Robin Coan Â

By David Lohr

9/18/07

SALT LAKE CITY, UT. (Crime Library) — It has been two weeks since 18-year-old Christopher Robin Coan went missing, and despite several promising leads, police have been unable to locate him. Christopher's family believes a head injury he sustained when he was a child could play into his disappearance.

According to police, Christopher disappeared on the evening of September 3 after finishing his shift at the Subway sandwich shop in Enoch, Iron County.

"The manager watched him leave," Enoch Police Chief Dave Browning told Suujournal.com. "There was no one around, because the Subway is in a shopping area where the rest of the stores aren't built yet."

Sasha Turner, Christopher's live-in girlfriend, reported him missing the following day, and a massive search was launched for Christopher and his 1994 red and silver Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, license number 78596. Police are concerned for Christopher's safety because of a serious head injury he sustained when he was 7 years old, which impedes his ability to focus at times.

When investigators searched Christopher's workstation at Subway, they discovered a piece of paper on which he had written the numbers "208," which police believe may be part of a phone number.
"We are not sure if it's an area code or the first three numbers of a phone number, but it's the area code for Idaho," Browning said during an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune.

The mystery into Christopher's disappearance continued to trouble investigators. Then, police received a call from a truck driver who reported seeing Christopher's truck on September 8 at a Sinclair gas station near Park City. The location is approximately 246 miles from the Subway shop where Christopher was last seen.

According to Browning, the trucker was able to accurately describe Christopher's truck, including three stickers on the back window. One says "The Wizz cartoon," another says "Jerry Bear," and the third says "Beatles."

When investigators went to review footage from surveillance cameras at the gas station, they discovered not all of them were in order, thus making it impossible to confirm the sighting.

Christopher's profile on MySpace.com describes him as a young man who prefers books to TV.

"On average, I probably watch a little less than one hour of television in any given two weeks," his profile reads. "If I'm going to watch television, I usually watch CNN, the Discovery Channel, The History Channel."

"I like to read about the counter-culture of the sixties and about the Vietnam War. I also like reading about America and how shitty it is. These are most of the books I have read over the years: The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Fight Club, The Fountainhead, Nam, We Were Soldiers Once... and The Doors of Perception."

Christopher has several photos of his girlfriend, Sasha, uploaded to the photo section of his page. She is also listed as his top friend. In her own MySpace profile, Sasha describes him as the best thing to ever come into her life.

"I love my animals more than anything or anyone, except Chris. He is my everything," her profile reads. "He makes me happy, truly happy. He makes me feel like I'm the best person that has ever lived and that I'm beatiful [sic] no matter what! He loves me. Really. And that is the greatest feeling I've ever felt. Christopher Robin is the only boy in my eyes."

Since Christopher's disappearance, police have conducted both ground and aerial searches. Christopher's father and grandfather have been involved since the beginning and have been active participants in the investigation.

"We have eliminated a lot of areas," Christopher's father, Dave Coan, told Suujournal.com. In regards to the investigative efforts being put forward by Browning, Coan had this to say: "That man has gone 100 times over his duties. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have any direction at all."

Police say Christopher had little if any money on him when he disappeared, and there has been no activity in his bank account. Given the alleged sighting of Christopher's vehicle near Park City, police now theorize he could be in northern Utah. Due in part to that sighting, Enoch police recently contacted the FBI and requested assistance in the case.

Christopher Robin Coan is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, 125 pounds, with blue eyes and shoulder-length blond hair. He was last seen wearing a green T-shirt and black corduroy pants. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should contact the Enoch Police Department at (435) 586-9445.

Help find Chris

The Utah Attorney General's Office announced that its Child Abduction Response Team was given new computer software that will help map out the best strategy for finding a missing or abducted child on Thursday from the donation of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. We're wondering if its first operating function could be used to assist in the search for 18-year-old Christopher Robin Coan, since the local police have few leads from his disappearance Sept. 3.

While the Enoch man is legally an adult, to his parents he will always be their little boy. His unknown whereabouts have resulted in the community grass-roots efforts to find him through an Internet Web site, e-mail campaign and candlelight vigil. Police have actively investigated the case with several officers working overtime, including Enoch Police Chief Dave Browning who has worked more than 80 hours a week for the last three weeks. A private investigator was even hired to look into a relationship Coan formed via MySpace with a girl in Logan. The investigator discovered the girl's residence, but did not actually see or have any contact with her.

Today phone records are expected to be released from Qwest Communications in compliance with a subpoena to find clues as to who Coan may have talked with from his place of employment at Subway Sandwiches, the last place where he was seen. There is no foul play suspected and stress tests administered on Coan's family members have eliminated any reason to believe a relative could be involved.

What's left is hope. Potentially, this new ArcGIS software the AG's office has acquired, which is used to identify trends, relationships and patterns that are not always apparent in statistical data, can be of assistance in the Coan case. That is if his age is not a factor.

Anyone with a missing loved one does not care whether it is a child or a great-grandfather. Neither should technology designed to solve such cases. With companies like ESR that are progressive and create state-of-the-art software to lessen the pressure on law enforcement to apprehend criminals and locate victims - whether it is a blatant, criminal abduction or the free will of a runaway - there has to be impartiality to age, race, socioeconomic status, etc., because in either scenario, the heartache the families and friends have from not knowing what has happened is not relieved by anything other than information.

Information is key and time is always of the essence in finding those who are gone without a trace. We beseech the search for Coan to continue and advocate for resources like ArcGIS to be used to the fullest extent possible if it is reasonable and in accordance with the circumstances.

Still no sign of missing southern Utah man

By Ben Winslow
Deseret Morning News
Published: Sept. 26, 2007 10:48 a.m. MDT

CEDAR CITY  From the flier taped up in a store window, Christopher Robin Coan's smiling face pleads for help.

"Missing person," the flier reads.

It has been more than three weeks since the 18-year-old Enoch, Iron County, man disappeared from his job at a Subway store on Sept. 3, and his family is desperate for any answers.

"The sad part is there isn't anything. We still don't know anything," his stepmother, Shannon Coan, said Tuesday. "We've had people call in with leads and sightings, but nothing's turned out."

Coan said the family still doesn't know if he ran away or was kidnapped or something even more dreadful. Enoch police continue to pursue leads and are working to subpoena the phone company, because someone saw Chris on the phone at his job the night he disappeared. There have been sightings of Chris in Logan, Ogden and Park City  yet nothing concrete. Searches in the hills and mountains around Enoch have turned up nothing.

For his family, it's been an agonizing few weeks.

"I'm still hopeful that he just decided he had too much stress and pressure," Coan said. "Others are looking at foul play, possibly picking up a hitchhiker ... "

Chris did not take his wallet with him, and he had no other clothes with him. He was last seen wearing a green T-shirt and black corduroy pants. He was last seen driving a 1994 maroon and silver colored Chevy Blazer, with a temporary tag. There were a number of stickers on the back of the car, including a Grateful Dead bear, a sticker for "The Wizz," and The Beatles.

Coan said the family believes that somebody out there knows something.

"If someone would say, 'I saw him. I talked to him. He'll be on his own. He'll contact you when he's ready,"' Coan said. "Right now, our lives are on hold. If we could just know if he's OK."

Anyone with information is asked to call Enoch police at 435-586-9445.

Vigil for Chris Coan gathers community

Candice Sandness
Issue date: 9/24/07 Section: News

Family, friends and supporters gathered at the Cedar High School football stadium Wednesday night for the candlelight vigil to pray and share hopes for Chris Coan's return.

Eighteen-year-old Chris Coan from Enoch has been missing since Sept. 3 after leaving work at Subway Monday evening according to Enoch police.

Chris Coan's father Dave Coan, said his son's favorite high school teacher, Mary Christensen, led the vigil with prayer in hopes for Chris Coan's safe return.

"Leads are still coming in and communities are helping and we appreciate their help in the search," said Enoch police officer Dan Raddatz.

Dave Coan emphasized tenacity for his son's search.

"We ask you to remain awake and watching and get the word out about Chris' disappearance anyway you can," said Dave Coan.

Raddatz said there have been good solid clues found in Logan where Logan police are helping in the search.

"There have been vehicle descriptions reported that have matched Chris's car's description and have had people calling in saying they have seen men resembling Chris's description," he said.

Chris Coan used to live in Logan and has friends there who he keeps in contact through www.MySpace.com, Raddatz said.

The Enoch police department is working on subpoenaing phone records from Qwest Communications used from the phone at Subway because Chris received a phone call from a 208 Idaho area code while working on the day of his disappearance.

"I hope we get a resolution and find out where he is," said musician Steven Swift, a friend of the family, who performed during the vigil.

Ryan Ingledew, a friend who attended high school with Chris Coan, came to the vigil to share support for his family.

"I hope everything is alright with him and that he will come back soon," Ingledew said.

The Web site dedicated to finding Chris Coan, www.findchris.org, has a flyer that can be downloaded to spread the news of Chris's disappearance in hopes of finding him.

Family hoping for fresh leads in missing man case
Cedar City concert is set to raise funds to aid the search

By Ben Winslow
Deseret Morning News
Published: Oct. 2, 2007 10:17 p.m. MDT

The search for a missing southern Utah man has hit another dead end.

The family of Christopher Coan, 18, said police in Enoch, Iron County, were able to get hold of phone records from the Subway where the young man was working on the night he vanished. Police were looking seriously at a number with a 208 area code, in hopes that it was a clue to Coan's disappearance.

"It was a lady who left her purse at the Subway," Chris' stepmother, Shannon Coan, said Tuesday. "It ended up being nothing at all. That was probably one of the worst days of my life."

Frustration continues to build for the Coan family, who worry about what happened to Chris. He vanished after leaving his job Sept. 3 at a Subway restaurant near Cedar City. Police have classified the disappearance as "suspicious," but no one is sure if he was abducted or has run away.

"We are asking you to not only help us by not only being aware, but also by helping to spread the word of Chris," his father, Dave Coan, said in a video message on the Web site findchris.org. "If, by chance, you make contact with Chris, please let him know ... that we love him, we care about him, we're concerned about him and we just want to talk to him again."

The family also is trying to get access to Coan's MySpace page, to see if he had been corresponding with anyone. The Web site hasn't been accessed since Sept. 3  the day he vanished  but friends have posted messages pleading for his return.

"You need to come back now Christopher, you've been gone far too long," wrote one friend. "We're worried sick. Please, come back."

A possible sighting has prompted the Juab County sheriff to look around Eureka, Shannon Coan said.

Coan is blonde, about 5-foot-6, 125 pounds, with blue eyes. He was last seen in his 1994 maroon and silver colored Chevy S-10 Blazer, with a temporary tag and stickers on the back window including a Grateful Dead bear, "The Beatles" and "The Wizz."

Meanwhile, a concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in Cedar City to raise money for the search effort. Donations from the free concert at the Grind Coffee House at 19 N. Main will go toward the ongoing efforts to find Chris.

Concert emphasizes teen missing since Sept. 3

Blake Louthan
Issue date: 10/11/07 Section: News

A benefit concert for Chris Coan, an 18-year-old Enoch resident who has been missing since Sept. 3, took place at the Grind Coffee House Thursday to raise awareness and increase public attention.

The concert was organized by Tim Cretsinger, owner of Groovacious, to raise awareness that Coan is still missing. Cretsinger, who is friends with Coan's father, Dave Coan, said he felt that the media wasn't sufficiently covering the story anymore.

"People can't forget until Chris is back," Cretsinger said.

He also said the concert was about getting a good energy going so that Chris Coan could be found.

"Keep the positive vibes going," he said.

Dave Coan said he was pleased with the amount of care and concern that was at the concert.

"Those musicians were saying they were here for me," he said.

The musical acts who donated their time for the benefit concert included Karyn Whittemore, Tyler Braun, Ephraim Cornejo, Mason Cottam, Steven Swift, Rustin Reber and Brian Hunstman.

Whittemore was selling copies of her latest album at the event and donated half of the proceeds to finding Chris Coan.

The Web site, www.findchris.org, was set up as a place to supply information tips and to buy T-shirts and wristbands supporting the cause.

The shirts and wristbands are also sold at Groovacious.

Lisa Cretsinger, wife of Tim Cretsinger, said the best advice she could give would be to not forget that Chris Coan is out there.

She also said she felt the small community of Cedar City came together to provide help for the Coan family.

"This was a night to help relieve the family's tension," Lisa Cretsinger said.

Dave Coan said he wanted everyone in Cedar City to keep an eye out for tips and report them to the Web site.

"Spread the word," he said. "The point is getting Chris back. If we're not doing everything we can, we're selling him short."

Dave Coan also said he appreciated the amount of care and concern he has received.

He said some of his college professors contacted him and wished him luck on getting through this hard time.

"I appreciate it when everyone understands what we are going through," he said. "There's been some times where I can't even talk."

Dave Coan, in a presentation during the event, brought out a graph that showed how one person can affect two people who can then each affect two people, and so on, in an effort to help people realize Chris Coan is still missing.

The event was more than two hours long and featured, along with the music, speeches from the Coan family. The family said they appreciated the time everyone took to come out and support them.
