Associated Press

Article Last Updated: 06/09/2008 07:17:17 AM CDT

MARSHALL, Minn. — The family of a Marshall man who went missing in western Minnesota nearly three weeks ago is calling for volunteers for another search this weekend.

Brandon Swanson, 19, has been missing since the morning of May 14 after his car went into the ditch along the Lincoln and Lyon County line near Taunton.

Previous searches have focused on areas near the Yellow Medicine River.

The focus of this search will be on an area to the south and east of where Swanson's car was found. Organizers are hoping for at least 100 volunteers.

Swanson's last contact with his family was a phone call the ended abruptly early that May morning.

Missing Teen

A search for a missing Marshall teen has turned up nothing.

This weekend, around 100 people showed up to search for 19-year-old Brandon Swanson. Swanson has been missing since May 14th. His car was found near Taunton, but there has been no sign of the Marshall teen.

This weekend's search included cadaver dogs, people on horses, and an air search. Private investigator and search organizer Gary Peterson says this weekend's search focused on an area previously scoured by volunteers and law enforcement.

Private Brandon Swanson search suspended

POSTED: June 9, 2008

MARSHALL — The search for Brandon Swanson, 19, of Marshall will suspend for about 10 days, search organizer Gary Peterson said Sunday evening.

Peterson said organizers involved in the privately funded search which started about two weeks ago want time to re-assess the progress of the search. The organizers will not conduct a search this weekend, Peterson said.

Swanson has been missing since May 14. He has not been heard from since he abruptly lost cell phone contact with his parents in the early morning of May 14. Swanson’s car had went into a ditch along the Lincoln and Lyon County line road near Taunton. The search has included fields and wooded areas near the Yellow Medicine River in Lincoln and Lyon Counties.

About 100 volunteers searched for Swanson Saturday and a smaller group searched Sunday and no physical evidence of Swanson was found, Peterson said.

The Jon Francis Foundation of Stillwater, a privately funded organization that helps families of missing persons conduct searches, is working with Swanson’s parents Brian and Annette Swanson of Marshall.

The searches conducted by law enforcement and the private organizers have included search and rescue dogs, boats on the river, rescue personnel in the river, ground walkers, horses, all-terrain vehicles, cadaver dogs, planes and other aviation equipment.

Let me first say my prayers are with you on this but is there any way a map of the area can be posted? Also, in which direction the river runs and the proximity of Brandon's car to the river and where he was walking? Do authorities think he suffered a head injury as he was confused about where he was? I wold just like to hep bring him home not matter what the circumstance.

High-tech team to aid search for Minn. man
Remote-controlled planes, sonar called in as hunt for 19-year-old enters sixth week

June 25, 2008

A Texas search and recovery team will come to southwestern Minnesota to assist in a hunt for a missing man.

Nineteen-year-old Brandon Swanson, a 2007 graduate of Marshall High School in Marshall, Minn., and graduate of Minnesota West College in Canby, Minn., has been missing since May 14 and last was heard from during a cell phone call to his parents that ended abruptly, authorities say.

Lincoln County Sheriff Jeff Vizecky said the donation-funded search and recovery organization, Texas EquuSearch, will use sonar detection and remote-controlled aircraft to search for Swanson later this week.

"They've had some luck in a number of high-profile cases," Vizecky said.

Cheryl Lawless of EquuSearch said that water sonar will be used first, and if Swanson isn't found using that technique, the second step is to use the aircraft.

"The drone aircraft is equipped with a camera that sends pictures back. You can cover such a vast area using that type of equipment, and you can see things that normally you couldn't see. Air support is one of our best tools," Lawless said.

Swanson's car was found in a roadside ditch near the Lincoln and Lyon county line. The search has included areas in both counties near the Yellow Medicine River.

Swanson had told his parents he had run his car into the ditch near Lynd but the Lyon County Sheriff's Department found Swanson's car near Taunton in a ditch along the Lincoln and Lyon county line.

Swanson's parents, Annette and Brian Swanson, looked for their son for several hours after his initial telephone call at 1:50 a.m. May 14 and contacted the sheriff's department at 6:30 a.m., authorities said.

Swanson Family Still Searching For Brandon
06/28/2008
6:00 PM

Another day searching the Yellow Medicine River, another day without a trace of a missing Marshall man.

19-year-old Brandon Swanson has been missing more than six weeks now.

Volunteers headed back to area surrounding where Swanson's abandoned car was found, north of Taunton, to walk up and down the river banks.

Authorities believe Swanson fell into the river in the dark as he tried to walk from his car toward the light of a town on the horizon.

Swanson's parents realize their son is probably no longer living, but they hope searchers find Brandon's body soon so they can finally begin to move on.

“We're just sort of stuck in an in-between space. We can't move forward and we can't move back. And you're exhausted. But all the rest of your life is going on around you and you're expected to keep up with that. So you do the best you can, but closure is what we pray for,” Brandon’s mother, Annette Swanson said.

The search for Brandon Swanson is funded by the family, but there is a fund set up at the Bank of the West in Marshall.

The bank's address is:

Missing Man-Marshall

The Lincoln County sheriff says that a missing Marshall man probably died accidentally in the Yellow Medicine River.

After weeks of searching, Sheriff Jack Vizecky says he's convinced that 19-year-old Brandon Swanson's body is in the river somewhere. There's no evidence of foul play.

Swanson disappeared on May 14th. He car was found near the river on the Lincoln and Lyon county line in western Minnesota.

Since then, law enforcement officers have been searching. Volunteers groups have gone out nearly every weekend. They've found nothing, not even a piece of clothing or cell phone.

Still, Vizecky says there's no evidence to suggest Swanson is alive or that Swanson is anywhere other than in or near the river.

Searchers Unsure Of Missing Teen's Location
07/03/2008

There are some differences of opinion as to the whereabouts of the Minnesota teen who's been missing since early May.

The Lincoln County, Minnesota sheriff believes 19-year-old Brandon Swanson probably died accidentally in the Yellow Medicine River.

After weeks of searching for Brandon Swanson, Lincoln County, Minnesota Sheriff Jack Vizecky is convinced that Swanson's body is somewhere in the Yellow Medicine River.

But Lyon County, Minnesota Sheriff Joel Dahl says they can't be so sure just yet.

"You know, at this point my information is there is no information that has recovered a hat, glasses, shoes, body parts, anything to indicate that," Dahl said.

Investigators say there's no evidence of foul play.

"I maintained from the beginning I did not believe this was a voluntary disappearance of Brandon himself and I don't think that's the case," Dahl said.

Swanson disappeared on May 14.

He car was found near the river on the Lincoln and Lyon county line in western Minnesota.

Vizecky says there's no evidence to suggest Swanson is alive or that Swanson could be anywhere *other than in or near the river.

But Dahl says, there's still no evidence proving Swanson is in the river.

"You know, the river has always been an assumption but I don't know that that should alone be considered the fact that that's where he is. Because we really don't know," Dahl said.

The searching will go on in hopes they soon do find Swanson.

Law enforcement, volunteers, and family have been searching nearly every weekend since Swanson's disappearance. Other than his car, they've found nothing, not even a piece of clothing or his cell phone.

Fundraiser to be held for missing Marshall man

The Associated Press - Saturday, July 12, 2008
MARSHALL, Minn

Family and friends are holding a fundraiser for a Marshall man who has been missing since mid May.

Nineteen-year-old Brandon Swanson has been missing since May 14. He spoke to his father in the early morning hours that day, but hasn't been heard from since.

Swanson's father says his son told him he was near the town of Lynd just south of Marshall in southwestern Minnesota. But authorities found Swanson's car the next day in Taunton - about 20 miles northwest of Lynd.

A hog roast benefit will be held on Sunday in the 4-H building of the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Marshall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will help cover the costs of searching for Swanson and Thrivent Financial has promised to match any funds raised.

K-9s Searching For Swanson
By Drew Sandholm
Story Created: Jul 18, 2008 at 9:36 PM CDT
Story Updated: Jul 19, 2008 at 5:06 AM CDT

Where is Brandon?

The answer seems to be shrouded in a cloud of mystery. No one has seen the Marshall teen for more than two months.

In that time, the search had largely focused on the Yellow Medicine River, but that's changing.  Search manager Gary Peterson, "Now with the grass so high along the banks, it's impossible to walk that as far as the banks are concerned."

Instead, search parties will gather this weekend for the largest search conducted in weeks. Three K-9 units will focus on the roads around where Brandon's car was found abandoned near Taunton. Eight dogs and eleven handlers are teaming up with law enforcement and volunteers on the ground. They're hoping the dogs will pick up some kind of scent.

Brandon went missing May 14th. He called his dad Brian in the early morning hours and said he was near Lynd, MN. His car was stuck in a ditch and he needed a ride. Brian went to pick him up, but couldn't find Brandon based off of his directions. They talked on the phone for more than 45-minutes until something happened.

Brandon wasn't on the phone anymore.

The next day, authorities found his car near Taunton, MN. That's around 20 miles northwest of Lynd. They have been searching that area for nearly 11 weeks. Peterson is confident they'll find him. All the time, he says he runs into someone connected to Brandon, like a waitress who served him at a Marshall restaurant Friday night.

"She was telling me that her cousin knew him and you know, this is all good information that people are coming forward with, but they need to give it to their respective sheriff's department," said Peterson.

He hopes that information will help bring Brandon home soon.

Those interested in helping to search for Brandon this weekend should meet at the Taunton Fire Hall by 8:30 Saturday and Sunday morning. Outdoors clothing is recommended.
