From the family of Rachel Conger:

"Today is Rachel Conger's 31st birthday. We ask that everyone say a prayer for Rachel and her family on this difficult day. "

'Bring Rachel Home' effort will resume this weekend

February 25, 2009

The Center for Missing Persons (CUE) will be conducting all-day searches for a missing Henry County woman this weekend in an effort to raise awareness of this and similar cases.

Rachel Conger, 30, was last seen March 13, 2008. Her husband, Paul Conger, 50, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound three days later.

The couple had lived on Briarpatch Lake Road near Como.

Extensive searches for Rachel Conger were conducted last spring, and several volunteer searches have gone on as well, but she remains missing.

Rachel Conger’s daughter, Amber Simmons, 13, has been in communication with CUE, based in Wilmington, N.C., as has Rachel’s mother, Louise Younger.

Rachel was featured as Tennessee’s missing person and a stop was made at Memorial Park on Sept. 1.

Now, CUE plans all-day searches Saturday and Sunday here. The center’s director, Monica Caison, stated that CUE is providing this service for free and will bring 12 K-9 dogs and their handlers, and search teams from North Carolina, Missouri, Tennessee, Florida and Maine.

Donations for the searcher’s lunches are requested from individuals and businesses that are willing to help.

Items needed for lunches are: sandwich meats, fruits (bananas and apples), small bags of potato chips, bottled water, granola bars, napkins, lunch bags and sealable sandwich bags.

The group needs enough of each item to serve more than 200 lunches.

Daughter yearns for closure in case of missing mother

March 2, 2009

Her favorite color was green.

She was a lover of Mexican food and country music.

She was a collector of ceramic frogs and liked to sing along with songs on the radio while riding in the car with her daughter.

Rachel Conger, 30, was a woman who loved to laugh, loved life and most of all loved her little girl, Amber Simmons, who is now 14 years old.

Amber took a break Saturday morning from preparing food for about 200 people who were searching for her mother to reminisce about their time together. The searchers were with Community United Effort (CUE) Center for Missing Persons. As of this morning, some of the searchers have left Henry County while some have stayed to continue searching. The area they are searching has not been disclosed.

It has been almost a year since Conger was last seen on March 13, 2008. Her husband, Paul Conger, 50, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound three days later in a wooded area near the couple’s home in the Como area.

“She could draw, and she used to draw me little pictures,” said Amber. “She loved going to amusement parks and water parks and she liked hiking. Every year the carnival came (to Paris) we would ride rides together.”

Amber and her mom used to snuggle up on the couch, eat popcorn and watch movies together - her mom’s favorites were Lifetime movies and scary movies.

When Amber was a little girl, her best memories of her mom were when they would swing together at the park.

“And she’d push me on the merry-go-round,” she said. “She was always fun to be around. A really kind, understanding person - I could tell her anything in the world and she would understand and help me through it. She would always hear my side of the story.”

“She thought some of the most random things were funny, and it was an argument killer,” said Amber. “When we argued, we’d either end up laughing or talking about something serious that was bothering us.”

“A few days before she went missing, she was scared to sleep alone so I’d sleep with her in her bed,” she said. “We laid on her bed and talked forever, and it was just a good memory.”

“I do have hope that my mom will be found,” she said. “I do have hope for that.”

Amber said those who would like to help can go to the Web site, www.bringrachelhome.blogspot.com to donate or help with more searches. There also will be fundraisers this summer for the search effort.

“We need donations to help with the searches,” said Amber. “And if the searches are not successful, we’ll have to pay for a burial. Also, I would like to raise awareness for domestic violence.”

“(When she first went missing,) I really wanted to know where she was, and I wanted to know what happened and I wanted to know why,” she said. “I want to tell (my mom) how much I love her, and that I’ll love her no matter what and I miss her so much.”

A silver lining to this horrible tragedy is that Amber has a closer relationship with her father, Jody Simmons, with whom she now lives.

“I would like to give a big thanks to everyone who has helped us,” she said. “It means so much to me what the community has done, especially Yoder Brothers who has hosted searches.”

“My friends and family have helped me through this,” said Amber. “My mom would want me to be strong for her. The stronger I am, the more I can focus on getting my mom found.”

With a maturity beyond her 14 years, Amber said, “(This has) made me realize I took life for granted and I didn’t cherish life enough, because you never know when it’s going to be taken from you.”

Weather Limits Conger Search

March 2, 2009

Paris, Tenn. - A weekend search for a woman who has been missing for a year this month was limited by weather conditions and she remains missing.

Rachel Conger, 30, disappeared last March and her husband, Paul Conger, was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound March 16, 2008. At that time, Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew said investigators believe she was the victim of a murder-suicide at the hands of her husband.

Conger's family recruited the CUE Center for Missing Persons to come to Henry County to search for the missing woman over the weekend.

CUE Center Executive Director Monica Caison said assisting in the search were fourteen canine teams and search teams from six states. The Sheriff’s Office also assisted the team in this weekend’s search for Conger.

The groups searched three different areas, utilizing GPS technology to map the exact areas that ground teams went over. The Center mapped areas of interest at Swan Bay, an undisclosed private property in Buchanan and the area surrounding Paul Conger’s home.

Approximately 40 people volunteered to search, but Caison said that the searchers are trained so that they can search a large amount of area in relatively little time. The GPS mapping allows them to keep a record of the exact areas searched and where team members were at all times.

Caison said, “We didn’t find Rachel this time, and due to the bad weather this weekend, we were not able to search all of the planned areas.” Some of the searchers efforts were hampered by muddy conditions and Saturday night’s snow.

“We are planning to return in the next few weeks to search for Rachel," Caison said. "However, it will be on a smaller scale and without the amount of assistance that we had this time."

Conger’s daughter, 14-year-old Amber Simmons, said, “I would like to thank everyone that helped in the search- from the volunteer searchers to everyone who donated food. I cannot even begin to describe my gratitude to Monica Caison and CUE, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, all of the volunteers, and all of the generous people and businesses who donated to help feed lunch to the searchers. We received a tremendous response to our call for help, and that says so much about the good people of Henry County.”

Simmons said that the last year has been difficult for her, but she is able to draw strength from her faith in God and the way that her mother raised her. She went on to say, “My mom was the most amazing woman ever and the best friend I have ever had and that is what keeps me going everyday. I know that one day eventually she will be found because I will never give up looking for my mother, my best friend. I could tell her everything and she wouldn't judge me- only help me and be understanding.”

Simmons stated that at any age, it is hard to lose a parent, but is made more difficult in her situation because some people feel the need to gossip about her mother and say hurtful things. She says that she tries to ignore those comments, and focus on the positive people who have done so much to help her. Simmons said, “Over the past year I realize that I should have cherished every day with my mom and if I could go back, I would make it a point to try and be more understanding and helpful. At this point all we can do is hope and pray for my mother Rachel Conger to be found.”

Organizers with Bring Rachel Home say that they are planning a candlelight vigil on the one-year anniversary of Rachel Conger’s disappearance, but the family has not decided if the vigil is open to the public.
