Businessman offers rewards in 20 cases, 7 in Indiana

Seven families of missing Hoosiers have rekindled hope of finding their loved ones -- or at least finding out what happened to them -- thanks to a Philadelphia businessman who is putting up big rewards.

Family members of six of the seven gathered Downtown on Thursday at the Omni Severin Hotel to plead for information and to dangle the lure of $100,000 -- in each case -- to anyone who offers information that locates the missing person or leads to arrests and convictions in the cases.

The Indiana seven are among 20 missing persons cases nationwide tagged with rewards totaling $2 million put up by Joe Mammana, who owns an egg farm and is a former Marine. He has a degree in criminal justice and a police record for charges of aggravated assault, drugs, fraud and theft.
In recent years, however, he has become a crime fighter, putting up sizable rewards in high-profile cases, including that of Natalee Holloway, the Alabama high school student who vanished last year in Aruba.

Last month, Patti Bishop, stepmother of Karen Jo Smith, who disappeared in Indianapolis on Dec. 27, 2000, contacted Mammana about her vision for a "Squeaky Wheel Tour'' to draw attention to missing persons cases.

Turner, circa 1997

Shannon Rayanne Turner
Missing since December 4, 1997 from Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana
Classification: Endangered Missing

Vital Statistics

Date Of Birth: August 10, 1964
Age at Time of Disappearance: 33 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'9"; 125 lbs.
Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Red hair; brown eyes. Light complexion.
Marks, Scars: Small scar between eyes. Tattoos: "butterfly" on right shoulder; "Lips" on right buttock"; word "Rage" on left ankle; "Spiderweb" with flowers on left shoulder; "Ribbon" across lower back; "Dragonfly" on right ankle; "Half moon" smoking a marijuana cigarette on right thigh.
AKA: Tawny, Bubblas

Circumstances of Disappearance

Turner was last seen on December 4, 1997 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was employed as an exotic dancer at Babe's Showgirls West and was last seen leaving the club after her shift ended in the early morning hours. She left her place of employment, possibly with an ex-boyfriend.

Turner's car was being repaired several days prior to her disappearance and Mays was picking her up from work as a result. Turner's landlord and a service worker saw Turner and her boyfriend together at her apartment on December 3, the day before she vanished. Turner chained her dog outside in her backyard, as was her routine before she left for work. She never returned home after her dance shift. The neighbors called the Humane Society three days later, when Turner's dog was still outside. The animal was taken to a shelter.

Turner and her boyfriend, David Mays, an enforcer in the Outlaws motorcycle gang, became engaged prior to Thanksgiving 1997. Authorities learned that Turner and Mays had an appointment to apply for their marriage license during early December, but she decided to cancel the plans. According to Turner's family and friends, she was attempting to end their relationship in full. Turner said she would bring Mays to meet her family in Kenosha, Wisconsin over the Thanksgiving holiday, but she never showed up. She last spoke to her family on December 1 of that year, when she called her mother collect.

Searches in October 2003 in Perry Township failed to locate Turner's body on property with suspected links to the Outlaws motorcycle gang, whom Turner's boyfriend was the enforcer of. The site was also unsuccessfully searched for the body of Lola Katherine Fry, an exotic dancer missing from Indiana since 1993.
