Trail Goes Cold in Search for Missing Bremerton 19-Year-Old

By Derek Sheppard Posted May 25, 2010 at 12:01 a.m. , updated May 25, 2010 at 7:43 p.m.

BREMERTON — There’s been no sign of a missing Bremerton woman for nearly two weeks, and her family and investigators believe someone may have picked her up when she disappeared.

Kara Lynn Radabah, 19, has been missing since around 6 p.m. May 13, after she left home to jog in nearby Illahee State Park.

“Something interrupted her from simply walking home,” her mother, Cheryl Radabah, said on Tuesday.

Radabah has schizophrenia-like symptoms and may be experiencing delusions. She may also suffer from seizures where she remains conscious.

She was last seen around Illahee State Park, wearing a black shirt, bluejeans and white tennis shoes.

Family and authorities are concerned because she didn’t have her medication, identification, cell phone, money or credit cards, or contact lenses when she disappeared.

Police tried three times with the assistance of dogs to track her path from the park, each time ending at 30th Street and Trenton Avenue, not far from the park.

“The dog tracks went from rural to urban and just stopped,” said Kitsap County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson. “In all likelihood, she was picked up by somebody.”

Detectives didn’t find anyone who remembered seeing her on public transit.

Who might have picked her up, or why they did, remains a mystery.

Since her disappearance, the family, friends and church members at Sylvan Way Baptist Church in Bremerton have blanketed the area with fliers. She was entered into a national missing persons database, the family has taken out ads offering a $25,000 reward for her safe return, and there have been numerous media reports. A Facebook page called "We Need To Find Her" was established a few days ago and has more than 1,700 followers.

Wilson said a handful of tips have come in, and detectives are following them to determine if they’re credible.

“This is number one on our priority list for missing person reports,” he said.

Cheryl Radabah emphasized that she just wants Kara back. She hopes the cash reward will lead to her daughter’s safe return.

“We are not interested in blaming people,” she said. “Just send her back.”

The morning before Kara disappeared, she’d had a delusion about wanting to help or save people, her mother said. There was nothing to suggest she intended to leave home.

It’s possible that someone who didn’t know her believed they were helping a person down on their luck, she said.

Without her medication for nearly two weeks, Kara is likely confused, disoriented or disorganized, and possibly hyper or distressed, her mother said.

She was a top student at Central Washington University and was active at Sylvan Way Baptist Church.

Pastor Ric Glomstad said church members spread fliers all over Kitsap County and the Seattle waterfront, and they will likely begin expanding the reach to other surrounding cities.

He gets questions about Kara all the time.

“That’s the first thing anybody asks me,” he said.

Anyone who might have seen Radabah or has information about her whereabouts is asked to call 911 or (360) 308-5400.

$25,000 reward for information on missing Bremerton girl

by ELISA HAHN / KING 5 News NWCN.com  Posted on May 27, 2010 at 11:00 PM

BREMERTON, Wash. - Tips have been coming in from as far as Bellingham for a missing Bremerton teenager. Kara Radabah disappeared two weeks ago without her keys, wallet, or the medication she needs for a serious illness.

Kara grew up a shy and booksmart girl. Radabah graduated with honors from Bremerton High School last year and got a scholarship at Central Washington University.

"She just loves people. She's one of the most down to earth people you'll ever meet," says her father, John Radabah.

But at college, her family noticed something was wrong. Kara started showing signs of schizophrenia.

"As we talked there were things she was saying that didn't make sense. That there were doctors on her floor at her dorm room, that there were experiments happening," says Cheryl Radabah, her mother.

Her parents brought her home, where Kara received the treatment she needed. She started attending classes near home, and got a new car. Then two weeks ago, her mother noticed Kara stopped taking her medication and the symptoms returned.

"I held my hand out and took hers and told her I want you to know I'm never going to abandon you, I will walk with this with you, I'm going to be there the whole way, but we're going to go to the doctors and get this fixed," says her mother.

That's when Kara slipped outside and disappeared.

A police K-9 unit picked up her scent at nearby Illahee State Park. And each time the track lead to 30th and Trenton in Bremerton. But then the track ended abruptly as if she was picked up by a passing car.

"I've check her computer and I've checked her cell phone, because she's left home with absolutely nothing," says Cheryl.

The 19-year-old left without her wallet, her keys, her contacts and her meds. Her parents don't know what they fear more.

"Either somebody has her, or the delusions have gotten so bad that she cannot tell what's reality and what's a delusion," says her father.

Police are following up on the tips, but so far none of them have panned out. Her family is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.

Sighting of missing East Bremerton woman brings hope, heartache to mother

Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 9:31 a.m. PT
By CHRISTOPHER CARTER
CENTRAL KITSAP REPORTER

Friday marked 15 days since Kara Lynn Radabah checked her Facebook profile, sent an e-mail or spoken to her parents.

Cheryl Radabah, Kara Radabah's mother, said she's waiting for a clue to surface, anything to let her know that her only daughter, 19, is safe.

"There hasn't even been a whisper of her," she said.

Kara Radabah disappeared from Illahee State Park near her house May 13.

Despite a reported sighting of her daughter in Bellingham earlier this week, the unknowns continue to cause heartache for Cheryl Radabah and her family.

"It is hopeful to me as her mom, it's also tough," she said of hearing about the Bellingham tip. "It puts me in find mode. I have not given up hope."

Doctors told Kara Radabah in April she had schizophreniform, a version of schizophrenia, and she recently stopped taking her medication, said Cheryl Radabah.

Coming to terms with the diagnosis and her medication regimen, and the stigma metal illness carries with it, had been stressful, Cheryl Radabah said.

Most of the time Kara is an everyday college student, but occasionally she slips into delusions. The delusions, which often focus on her helping others, can make her vulnerable and confused and her mother believes that may be what caused her to run off.

Cheryl Radabah described the delusions as "visions of grandeur."

She said that she began noticing the delusions during a conversation the afternoon her daughter disappeared.

She said Kara Radabah was confused and began repeating phrases over and over.

"She kept saying, 'Mom, I think I can go to school and cure cancer. Mom, I think I can cure cancer,'" she said, adding that her daughter admitted to her that she had not been taking her medication for the past week. Following their conversation, Kara Radabah changed clothes and headed toward Illahee State Park, Cheryl Radabah said.

Hours later, her parents found her sitting on a park bench. What they didn't expect, was their daughter to flee as soon as she saw them.

"She wouldn't do that unless there was something really, very wrong," Cheryl Radabah said.

Described by her mother as an avid reader, compassionate and religiously devoted, Kara Radabah

Cheryl Radabah said her daughter struggled with the news of her condition but surrounded herself with friends and tried to make the best of it.

"She's been an incredibly brave, very brave, young lady through this entire thing," she said. "(She has) shown courage I couldn't even imagine."

Kara Radabah's Facebook profile has become a catch-all for prayer requests, words of encouragement and volunteers asking how to help find her. Another Facebook page was created to help get her picture out and now has nearly 2,500 members.

"Now is the time you have to get very smart," Cheryl Radabah said of using the web as a tool to find her daughter. "We're using social media, getting word out there as fast and quick as I can."

She said she's comforted by the amount of support from the community. She said childhood friends of her daughter have called and offered to help post fliers and drive around looking for her. Some volunteered to drive to Bellingham to search.

"Bremerton has been canvased," she said of the amount of fliers posted around the area. "No stone has been left unturned."

The Radabah family is offering a $25,000 reward for her return.

Bremerton Family Searching For Daughter Recently Diagnosed With Schizophrenia

Bremerton Family Searching For Daughter Recently Diagnosed With Schizophrenia

BREMERTON - A young Bremerton woman has been missing for nearly three weeks and her worried mother is hoping you can help find her.

They are offering a reward of $25,000 for her safe return.

19-year-old Kara Radabah disappeared from Illahee State Park in East Bremerton on May 13th. She lives with her family nearby. Search teams figured out Kara left the park at some point -- probably in a car -- but haven't been able to find her.

Kara's mom, Cheryl, says her daughter has schizophrenia and suffers seizures...so she could be hurting and in trouble. She says Kara was diagnosed with the disease shortly after starting college last Fall. Victims tend to experience their first symptoms of Schizophrenia in their late teens or early 20's.

There have been some unconfirmed sightings of Kara in the Bellingham area.

If you know where Kara Radabah is, or know something that could help investigators find her, call 911 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Second Search for Evidence in Bremerton Missing-Person Case
By Kitsap Sun staff
Kitsap Sun
Posted July 30, 2010 at 12:01 a.m.

BREMERTON — Authorities will conduct a second search Sunday morning in the area where an East Bremerton woman went missing May 13.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue unit will conduct the search with investigators and tracking dogs to make sure no evidence of 19-year-old Kara Lynn Radabah’s disappearance was missed.

She was last seen May 13 in Illahee State Park in Bremerton. She has schizophrenia-like symptoms and left home without medication unexpectedly.

The May 14 search focused on the area in and around the park, with a canine track ending around Sylvan Way and Perry Avenue. Investigators believe she left that location in a vehicle.

Someone reported seeing a woman matching her description in late May in Bellingham.

She is 5 feet 6 inches tall, 130 pounds with brown hair and eyes. She was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans and white shoes.

Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to call 911, or Kitsap County Central Communications at (360) 308-5400.

Remains Found Near lllahee May Be Missing 19-Year-Old

    * By Steven Gardner
    * Kitsap Sun
    * Posted August 1, 2010 at 12:29 p.m.

ILLAHEE — Remains believed to be Kara Lynn Radabah, the 19-year-old Bremerton woman who disappeared near Illahee State Park on May 13, were discovered around 11 a.m. Sunday.

Scott Wilson of the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office said a German Shepard being used in the morning search party found remains in a ravine just off Steinman Lane, on the north end of Illahee State Park. He said there is a "very strong likelihood" the remains are of Radabah, and family confirmed that a piece of clothing found at the scene belonged to the 19-year-old.

The area had been search immediately following Radabah's disappearance, Wilson said. Sunday's follow-up search was planned between the seven deputies in the sheriff's office search-and-rescue team and 26 volunteers, and the day was the first that worked with all schedules involved.

"We came out this morning expecting there would be a zero turn-up of anything," he said.

Radabah, was last seen at about 6 p.m. on May 13 after leaving home unexpectedly. She had been diagnosed with schizophrenia within the past year and was being cared for at home near Illahee State Park. A statement at the time said she had stopped taking her prescribed medications and has been acting delusional.

In May, search and rescue immediately instigated a ground search of the area, along with a group of a dozen volunteers. Later that month, someone reported seeing a woman who matched Radabah's description in Bellingham.

The Kitsap County Coroner will formally identify the remains.

The volunteer agencies participating in the search were the Washington State Explorer Search & Rescue, All Breed Canine Search and Rescue, and German Shepard Search Dogs, of Pierce County.

More information on the search will be published here as details are confirmed.

Human remains found in Kitsap Co. state park

BREMERTON, Wash. - Skeletal remains believed to be a 19-year-old Bremerton woman missing since May were discovered Sunday morning at a Kitsap County state park.

Scott Wilson of the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office said the remains were found in a steep canyon at the north end of Illahee State Park by a search team using German shepherds.

The same area was searched once before on May 14, the day after Kara Lynn Radabah, 19, of Bremerton vanished after unexpectedly leaving her home, located near the park.

But the initial search turned up nothing - and now investigators are puzzled by the surprise discovery of remains in an area that was thoroughly combed once before.

"We had searched this area, the dogs had gone through this area in the initial search and had not indicated that there was anything there, Wilson said. "Yes, dogs can sometmes overlook stuff - not usually, but they can - and this may be one of those cases."

Or Wilson said it's possible Radabah was in a different area at the time of the initial search, then came to this spot and fell into the ravine.

"Was this something where she was walking along at nighttime, stumbled, cracked her head on a rock and rolled down into the ravine? We don't know right now - that remains to be seen. Hopefully the coroner will be able to determine exactly what the cause of death was," Wilson added.

Investigators are processing the scene as if it were a homicide in case the autopsy shows foul play was involved, but right now it's believed it was an accidental death.

Wilson said detectives are "reasonably confident, to 99 percent certainty," that the remains are those of the Rabadah.

The Kitsap Sun reports that Radabah was last seen at about 6 p.m. on May 13 after leaving home unexpectedly. She had been diagnosed with schizophrenia within the past year and was being cared for at home near Illahee State Park. A statement at the time said she had stopped taking her prescribed medications and has been acting delusional.

In the first search of the area after her disappearance, search dogs followed her scent to an intersection, leading investigators to believe she may have entered a vehicle and left the area.

The Sheriff's Office also received a number of phoned-in tips from people who said they had seen her at various locations, including Kitsap Mall and as far away as Bellingham.

Nevertheless, authorities decided to conduct one last search of the park Sunday to eliminate the possibility that Radabah might be there - and that's when the remains were found.

Body identified as missing Bremerton woman

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BREMERTON, Wash. -- The Kitsap County coroner's office says dental records have confirmed that the remains found in a ravine near Illahee State Park are those of a Bremerton woman who disappeared May 13.

Coroner Greg Sandstrom confirms the remains are those of 19-year-old Kara Lynn Radabah. Forensic anthropologist Dr. Kathy Taylor will try to determine how the young woman died.

Sheriff's Deputy Scott Wilson says no crime is suspected. Radabah had been diagnosed with a delusional mental illness.

The remains were found Sunday by members of German Shepherd Search Dogs of Washington from Pierce County.

Her family says Radabah did volunteer work with Special Olympics and disabled children.
