Missing woman last seen in Bryson City.

Friday, February 24, 2006

A search is in progress for a Florida woman who was last reported seen in Bryson City the morning of Wednesday, Dec, 7.

Rossana Miliani, 29, of Miami disappeared after renting a storage space at Ye Olde Mini Storage on River Street, according to Steve Siske, a detective with Atlantic Southeast Investigations in Asheville. Siske said that luggage and personal effects were discovered at the storage facility last week, with the assistance of the Bryson City Police and Swain County Sheriff's office.

Miliani had taken a bus from Miami to Cherokee and spent the night of Dec. 6 at a hotel in Painttown. She had told several people in Cherokee and Bryson City that she wanted to hike and camp in the mountains, and "“specifically that she wanted to hike on the Appalachian Trail," Siske said. "She took Cherokee Public Transit over to Bryson City the morning of Dec. 7."

Ms. Miliani is a 5-foot, eight-inch white female with brown hair and eyes. She weighs 220 pounds, and has a tattoo of a lotus flower with Chinese letters on her lower back, a small birthmark on her chin and double pierced ears. She has an unspecified medical condition, according to a missing person report compiled by the Asheville Police Department.

Hilton linked to missing woman case in Bryson City, N.C.
61-year-old charged in beating death of Georgia hiker

01/15/08

The man charged in Meredith Emerson's murder is being looked at in the 2005 disappearance of a Florida woman who was hiking in western North Carolina.

Investigators said 26-year-old Rossana Miliani was last in Bryson City, N.C., on Dec. 7, 2005.

A store clerk from Bryson City recently told a private investigator that Miliani came into her store with a white man in his 60s and appeared nervous when they bought a backpack. The clerk contacted private investigator Steve Siske after reading about Miliani on the second anniversary of her disappearance.

Siske said he noticed case similarities when 61-year-old Gary Michael Hilton was arrested for the murder of Emerson, the 24-year-old hiker from Buford whose body was found earlier this month in a Dawson County forest north of Atlanta.

A spokeswoman with North Carolina's State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that agents are "considering the possibility of a connection," but declined further comment.

Hilton is also being investigated in the presumed deaths of an elderly North Carolina husband and wife who disappeared last October while hiking in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, N.C.

Irene Bryant's bludgeoned body was found Nov. 9 in the Pisgah forest. Her husband, John Bryant, remains missing and is believed to be dead.

Transylvania (N.C.) County Sheriff David Mahoney has said, "At this point, I'm willing to say [Hilton] is a suspect" in the disappearance of the Bryants.

In Florida, Leon County District Attorney William Meggs told the AJC last week that there is enough evidence to charge Hilton with the murder of 46-year-old Cheryl Hodges Dunlap, whose body was found in Apalachicola National Forest on Dec. 1. Like Emerson, she had been decapitated.

And in Ormond Beach, Fla.  on the opposite coast from Leon County police confirmed they met with GBI officials on Thursday and are investigating Hilton in the gruesome killing of Michael Scot Louis. The 27-year-old man's decapitated body was found spread among three trash bags on Dec. 6 near Tomoka State Park.

Georgia investigators meet with those from N.C., Florida

January 15th 2008

CLEVELAND - Authorities from Georgia, Florida and North Carolina met Tuesday in Cleveland to discuss possible links between hiker-murder suspect Gary Michael Hilton and other cases.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead says the FBI, prosecutors from north Georgia, the National Forestry Service and law enforcement authorities from Florida and North Carolina attended the meetings.

Bankhead said Georgia investigators were presenting evidence collected in the murder of 24-year-old Meredith Emerson to determine if it might be useful in investigations elswhere.

In the latest case, authorities are investigating whether Hilton might also be involved in the 2005 disappearance of a 26-year-old Florida woman missing after she went hiking in western North Carolina. Rossana Miliani was last in Bryson City on December 7th, 2005.

Georgia authorities have charged the 61-year-old Hilton with murder in the death of Emerson, who vanished New Year's Day while hiking in north Georgia and whose decapitated body was found the following week.

He is also a suspect in the death of 84-year-old Irene Bryant, who was found near a hiking trail in western North Carolina last month. Her husband, 80-year-old John Bryant, is still missing.

Florida authorities say Hilton is a suspect in the death of Cheryl Hodges Dunlap, whose decapitated body was found in Apalachicola National Forest in northwest Florida on December 15th.

Sheriff: Hiker Suspect Tied to NC Case

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Investigators have linked the slaying of a North Carolina hiker and disappearance of her husband to a man charged with killing a hiker in Georgia, and are looking into whether he could be tied to the disappearance of another North Carolina hiker, authorities said Wednesday.

Gary Michael Hilton has been charged in the beating death and decapitation of 24-year-old Meredith Emerson, whose body police found Jan. 7 in a Georgia state forest with Hilton's help. He has also been named a suspect in the death of Cheryl Hodges Dunlap, whose decapitated body was found in Florida's Apalachicola National Forest on Dec. 15.

Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney said detectives have now linked Hilton to the slaying of 84-year-old Irene Bryant and disappearance of her 80-year-old husband John Bryant in the North Carolina woods. Mahoney declined to say how investigators linked Hilton to the case.

Hilton's attorney in the Georgia case, Neil A. Smith, said last week that the case involved "significant mental health issues." Hilton is being held without bail.

Searchers found Irene Bryant's body Nov. 9. She and her husband had been missing since Oct. 21, when they left for a hike in the Pisgah National Forest. Like Emerson, Irene Bryant died of a blow to the head and her body was found near a hiking trail.

Authorities believe John Bryant may have been kidnapped to provide a security code for the couple's bank account. Someone withdrew $300 from their account at an ATM the day after they went hiking.

The transaction took place in Ducktown, Tenn., about 50 miles from the area of the Georgia investigation. Authorities say Hilton tried to use Emerson's credit card after her disappearance during a New Year's Day hike.

The license plate found on the van Hilton was driving when he was arrested was stolen from a disabled car in Transylvania County, N.C., Mahoney said. The owner didn't notice the plates were missing until after learning of Hilton's arrest in the Emerson case.

The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation is also looking into whether Hilton could be linked to the disappearance of Rossana Miliani, 26, who was last seen Dec. 7, 2005, and had told her family she was going hiking.

A store clerk said Miliani came into her store with a white man in his 60s and seemed nervous when they bought a backpack, said private investigator Steve Siske.

List Of Cases With Possible Gary Hilton Connection Continues To Grow

Submitted by ReneƩ LaSalle on January 15, 2008 - 9:47pm. News | Crime

Tuesday in north Georgia law enforcement agencies compared notes on the man authorities say killed at least two hikers.

But, there could be more...

Sixty-one year old Gary Hilton is charged in the Georgia murder of 24 year old Meredith Emerson.

Florida authorities say they have enough evidence to charge him in the murder of 46 year old Cheryl Hodges Dunlap.

Hilton is also the only suspect in the murder of Irene Bryant and the disappearance of her husband John.

Now authorities say Hilton may be connected to the 2005 disappearance of 26 year old Rossana Miliani.

The Florida resident was hiking in North Carolina, she was last seen with a man fitting Hilton's description.

Authorities don't know how many cases may have a Gary Hilton connection.

John Cagle of the GBI says, "I've been in contact with several agencies across the US. But right now we're just talking with North Carolina and Florida and evaluating what we have and seeing if it's useful to them right now."

Here is a timeline of the cases...

December 7, 2005 - Rossana Miliani disappears, she is seen with a man about 60 less than a week later.

October 20, 2007 - John and Irene Bryant disappear in Pisgah National Forest, a masked man uses the couple's credit card at a Ducktown ATM two days later.

November 9, 2007 - Irene Bryant's body is found, John Bryant remains missing.

December 6, 2007 - Twenty-seven year old man is found dead near Tomoka State Park in Florida, police say Hilton is a person of interest.

December 19, 2007 - The body of Cheryl Dunlap is found in Apalachicola National Forest, a masked man uses her ATM card three times after her killing.

January 7, 2008 - Hilton leads investigators to Meredith Emerson's body.  She disappeared during a New Year's Day hike, authorities say Hilton tried to use her credit card.

Nat'l Case May Be Linked To Missing Kendall Hiker
Police Look To Gary Hilton In Missing Kendall Hiker Case

 Reporting Carey Codd

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― For two years the family of Rossana Miliani kept vigil for the 26-year-old online. They posted missing posters and updates, hoping someone out there would know what became of her. Miliani went missing in the North Carolina Mountains in 2005, and almost three years later police are looking at Gary Hilton.

"I feel these two years of waiting have been a purgatory that doesn't end," said her sister Lorenna Miliani.

Time stopped for the Miliani family in December 2005. That's when phone calls from Rossana Miliani ceased.

"Hopefully she's still alive," said Miliani. "We still have that glimmer of hope because we can't lose that until we know for sure."

Her family says Miliani is a free spirit--a successful and trusting young woman from Kendall. She went to North Carolina to hike the Appalachian Trail. Investigators are now trying to learn if Miliani met Gary Hilton there, and possibly met her fate.

"We want to know the truth."

Lorenna Miliani says she and her family tried to convince local authorities to investigate.

"Nobody wanted to make a missing persons case because she wasn't a child. They said 'oh, she's probably around somewhere just probably wants to break contact with you."

But Lorenna knew that was impossible. She says Rossana is too close to her niece and too close to her mother and father. Then a year ago a store clerk in North Carolina said he remembered seeing a nervous Miliani with a man in his 60's who fits the description of Gary Hilton.

Hilton is now charged with murdering hiker Meredith Emerson. For years the Miliani family waited for an answer.

And now they're waiting again for authorities to determine if this accused killer played a role in this vibrant woman's disappearance.

"We have everything," said Miliani. "We know all about her life up until age 26, until she decided she was going to North Carolina to the mountains. There needs to be ending; it can't just be a mystery."

Authorities in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina are sharing information about Hilton to see if he's connected to several other murders. The Cherokee County Sheriff in North Carolina says he hopes his department will speak with Hilton sometime soon and see what he'll say about Miliani's disappearance.

Suspect Gary Michael Hilton linked to John and Irene Bryant case

January 17, 2008

Brevard - Investigators have evidence linking Georgia drifter Gary Michael Hilton with the killing of a Henderson County woman and presumed death of her missing husband, Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney said Wednesday.

But Mahoney stopped short of saying when that "positive link"¯ could result in charges against Hilton, who already is jailed in the slaying of a 24-year-old Georgia hiker.

The sheriff during a press conference said he could not release "details regarding the timing or venue of criminal charges."

Searchers found Irene Bryant, 84, dead on Nov. 9 and later determined she had been killed by a blow to the head.

She and her 80-year-old husband, John, had been missing since Oct. 21 after going on a hike in the Pink Beds area of Pisgah National Forest.

Someone used their bank card to withdraw $300 in Ducktown, Tenn., the next day.

Mahoney had previously said Hilton, 61, was the only suspect in the Bryant case. A license plate police found on Hilton's van at the time he was taken into custody in Georgia had been stolen from a car in Brevard.

Hilton was later charged in the slaying of Meredith Emerson after her disappearance on a New Year's Day hike in north Georgia.

Florida officials have said they have enough evidence to charge Hilton in the killing of Cheryl Hodges Dunlap, 46, whose body was found Dec. 19 in Florida's Apalachicola National Forest.

Authorities say a masked person used her ATM card three times after her disappearance.

N.C. State Bureau of Investigation agents also are looking into whether Hilton may have been involved in the disappearance of Rossana Miliani, 26, in Bryson City.

She was last seen Dec. 7, 2005 after telling her family she was going hiking.

Holly Bryant said she also was told by Mahoney of a link between Hilton and her parents' case.

She said she could not discuss what investigators know for fear of hampering prosecution.

"I am so thankful that they got this guy off the streets,"¯ she said. "Hopefully people will be safe in the national forests again."

Hilton’s van found in Georgia

January 19, 2008

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Authorities on Friday found a second van belonging to drifter Gary Michael Hilton that sat abandoned on a forest service road in Georgia for two years before disappearing a month ago.

Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the 1996 white Chevrolet Astro van was in a scrap metal yard in Habersham County, Ga.

The GBI said a man who had seen a flat-bed tow truck remove the vehicle from the forest service road in the Chattahoochee National Forest called in after media reports about the search for the missing van.

Agents recovered it and transported it to the GBI’s Regional Investigative Office in Cleveland, where it will be processed for evidence next week.

The van had been stripped and is in very bad condition, the GBI said.

Hilton is a suspect in deaths in three states, including the killing of hiker Irene Bryant and the disappearance of her husband John near Brevard in October.

N.C. State Bureau of Investigation agents also are looking into whether Hilton may have been involved in disappearance of 26-year-old Rossana Miliani, who was last seen in Bryson City on Dec. 7, 2005, a month after Hilton was cited for his abandoning the van.

Search for hiker's body takes new turn
Investigators chart suspect Hilton's movements in Ga., Tenn.

January 24, 2008

BREVARD - Authorities from three states and the federal government will use aircraft and least 50 people to search parts of Georgia and Tennessee today for the body of missing hiker John Bryant.

Searchers are focusing on Towns and Union counties in northeast Georgia and a stretch of Georgia Highway 5 leading toward Ducktown, Tenn.

Investigators settled on a search area by studying suspect Gary Michael Hilton's movements but aren't getting any help from the Georgia drifter himself.

Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney said Wednesday that he was not aware of any information Hilton has offered about the location of a body.

Bryant, 80, disappeared while on a hiking trip with his 84-year-old wife, Irene, on Oct. 21 in the Pink Beds area of the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard.

Searchers found her body Nov. 9. She had been killed from multiple blows to her head, according to an autopsy report.

Someone used the Bryants' ATM card in Ducktown the day after Irene Bryant was killed. The town is about 50 miles from the area of the investigation in Georgia.

Authorities in Georgia detained Hilton on Jan. 4 for questioning the New Year's Day disappearance of 24-year-old hiker Meredith Emerson. He was charged with murder in her killing after leading them to her body on Jan. 7 and has been in jail since.

He remains a suspect in Bryant's death and the slaying of a 46-year-old woman whose body was found in Florida's Apalachicola National Forest on Dec. 15. Investigators also are looking into whether he is connected to two missing hikers, including 26-year-old Rossana Miliani, who was last seen three years ago in Bryson City.

"Numerous sources have identified Gary Michael Hilton as being in this area of Georgia in late October 2007," GBI spokesman John Bankhead said in a written statement about the search plans.

Mahoney said his investigation team tracked Hilton's travels from Brevard to Florida and back to Cherokee County in Georgia, where he was questioned by a sheriff's deputy and recorded by the patrol car's video camera.

"We are continuing to build our case,"¯ he said. "It is looking very good. There are a lot of reasons we are looking in that area. Quite simply, it just makes sense."

Mahoney said the vastness of the area and the time that has passed since John Bryant disappeared will make the searching difficult.

"It is still a needle in a haystack,"¯ he said.

The FBI is coordinating the operation.

Hilton was known to frequent the forests of north Georgia.

GBI agents last week said Hilton in 2005 had abandoned a van in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The van, which was recovered from a scrap yard on Friday, played a role in Hilton's arrest in Emerson's death.

A U.S. Forest Service officer wrote Hilton a ticket for leaving his van in the forest. A warrant was issued for Hilton's arrest after he failed to pay the fine. Authorities used that warrant to hold Hilton after taking him into custody for questioning in Emerson's disappearance.

He was driving another van with a license plate stolen in Brevard when he was detained in Georgia.

The GBI is seeking help from the public on any sightings of Hilton in northeast Georgia. Anyone who recalls seeing Hilton, or his white van, in Towns County in late October, can contact the GBI's Cleveland Office at 706-348-4866 or toll-free at 888-233-5680.

Feds confirm involvement in Bryant case

The U.S Attorney's Office in Charlotte has confirmed that they are involved in investigating the deaths of John and Irene Bryant, two elderly hikers whose bodies were found on National Forest land in Transylvania and Macon counties.

But that's all they're willing to say at this point.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Feb. 12, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina Gretchen C.F. Shappert said that in coordination with state, local and federal law enforcement agencies, her office is indeed investigating the deaths of the Bryants, but past that, they would offer no further comment or information regarding the case.

Meanwhile, Gary Michael Hilton sits in a Georgia prison cell.

Hilton, 61, is a suspect in the death of John Bryant, 80, a Brevard man whose skeletal remains were found in Macon County on Feb. 2 in the Nantahala Forest near Standing Indian campground. Sheriff Robert Holland confirmed last week that Hilton was the main suspect in the case. Though he could not comment on aspects of the case, Holland did say that evidence and information from the public suggest that Hilton spent time in Macon County, and had been sighted by witnesses at different locations in Franklin.

Recent statements made by Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney also suggest that Hilton is the key suspect in the death of Bryant's wife, Irene, 86, whose body was found on National Forest land in Transylvania on Nov. 9, 2007.

Hilton pled guilty to the murder of Meredith Emerson, a 24 year-old Georgia resident whom he abducted from federal land in Union County, Ga. Hilton took Emerson from Freeman Trail on Blood Mountain. He is currently serving a life sentence for the crime in the Georgia prison system.

Though Macon and Transylvania sheriffs have named him as the prime suspect in the Bryant killings, no charges, state or federal, have been filed against Hilton. Holland said that his investigators are still actively working the case to its fullest extent.

Shappert echoed those sentiments on Tuesday, saying "a host" of state local and federal law enforcement agencies in multiple jurisdictions are working together to follow every lead in the Bryants' deaths.

"There are many tasks yet to be accomplished in this investigation, including complete and detailed forensic examinations of evidence obtained in Georgia, North Carolina and Florida,"¯ her statement read. "Any announcements or decisions made before this investigation is complete could damage any future prosecution. Mr. and Mrs. Bryant and their family deserve a full and complete investigation. Only with a full investigation can we guarantee the Bryants that justice will be fully and finally dealt to the perpetrator(s) of these heinous crimes."

Expressing gratitude to the public for its patience, Shappert said neither her office, nor any other law enforcement agencies involved with the case would entertain any further media inquiries, make any independent public reports or make themselves available to the media in any way regarding the investigation at this time.

But law enforcement officers also want to question Hilton in connection with the disappearance of a Florida woman, who was reported missing from Bryson City in December 2005, and the killing of a woman in a Florida national forest in December 2007.

Swain County Sheriff Curtis Cochran said that the disappearance of Rossana Miliani and Hilton's possible presence in Swain County are the subjects of a continuing investigation.

"Of course, we'd like to talk with Mr. Hilton, but we've got to await our turn. We have gotten an occasional tip, which we follow up on,"¯ Cochran said. "And we encourage people to come forward. We'd like to get some closure for the Miliani family."

Family of missing woman pins hopes on sketch

By Jon Ostendorff - June 20, 2009 07:08 PM

Bryson City - A private investigator looking for a woman who disappeared in Swain County four years ago has released an image of the man last seen with her.

Asheville-based investigator Steve Siske made the sketch public with the hopes of generating leads in the case.

Rossana Miliani was last seen Dec. 7, 2005, in Bryson City. The 26-year-old with bipolar disorder had told her family she was going hiking.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into whether her disappearance has ties to Gary Michael Hilton, who pleaded guilty to killing a Georgia hiker and is suspected in other slayings.

The missing woman's father said he believes the sketch could be Hilton.

"The picture kind of resembles him in a better time,"¯ said Anibal Miliani, whose family has spent the last four years looking for clues in Rossana's disappearance.

Hilton, a drifter who frequented state and national forest areas in the Southeast, is a suspect the murder of Western North Carolina hikers two years after Miliani disappeared.

Investigators in Transylvania County believe he killed Jack and Irene Bryant in October 2007.

Irene Bryant's body was found covered with leaves in the Pink Beds area of Pisgah National Forest, and her husband's skeletal remains were found months later off a U.S. Forest Service road in Macon County.

Someone used their ATM card in Ducktown, Tenn., after they disappeared.

Hilton pleaded guilty in January 2008 to bludgeoning hiker Meredith Emerson to death after he kidnapped her from a state park on New Year's Day that year. He had planned to get her bank card pass code and steal money from her accounts.

He is also a suspect in the slayings of two hikers in Florida.

Very little was know about the Miliani case until a store clerk called Siske after reading about it on the second anniversary of her disappearance.

Sketch may aid search of woman missing for 4 years

Jon Ostendorff - June 21, 2009 12:15 AM

The clerk told him Miliani came into her store that day with a white man she thought was about 60 years old. They bought a backpack, and Miliani seemed nervous, the store clerk said. The man said he was a preacher who traveled from campground to campground.

Siske asked fellow private investigator Hunter Glass, of Fayetteville, to interview the clerk and create a sketch of the man based on her memory. Glass is one of only three FBI-trained sketch artists in North Carolina.

"It had been some time, so we sat down, and we went all the way back to what was going on that day,"¯ he said. "I took her back to right before these people entered the store."

He produced a black-and-white sketch. But then, in what he says is a first in forensic artistry, he had a friend at a forensic computer company in Garner enhance the sketch to add color and dimension.

Siske said he's not sure whether the man in the image is Hilton. He would have been two years younger than his mug shot from the Emerson case. He wants people who see the image to pay attention to the man's graying hair near his temples. He said the store clerk remembered that detail vividly.

Rossana's father said the ordeal has been hard on his family.

"It has been an extremely life-changing experience," he said. "If somebody passed on, if somebody dies, you bury the body and have some closure. But right now we just don't know."

New lead in missing hiker case
Thursday, June 25, 2009 9:07 AM EDT
By Lee Zion, Times Staff

A private investigator may have a new lead in the disappearance of a 29-year-old Florida woman last seen in Bryson City four years ago.

Rossana Miliani, from Miami, disappeared Dec. 7, 2005 from Bryson City. The case has not yet been solved.

On Friday, Steve Siske, a detective with Atlantic Southeast Investigations in Asheville, released a police sketch of a man witnesses say was with Miliani just before she disappeared. The sketch is based on the testimony of a store owner who stepped forward in December 2007.

The store owner had noticed an article in the Smoky Mountain Times on Dec. 6, 2007, almost two years to the day after Miliani's disappearance. The article had a picture of Miliani, and the store owner recognized her from the photograph. The owner said Miliani had come into the store on Dec. 7, 2005 with a man accompanying her.

Siske said the store owner told him the two bought a backpack together, apparently for a hike. The man also bought a suit of clothes, and that sparked a conversation between him and the store owner. The man said he traveled from campground to campground, preaching.

Siske responded to earlier reports linking Miliani's disappearance with Gary Michael Hilton. Hilton has been convicted of killing one hiker, and is a suspect in several other deaths.

Siske said he isn't ready to say Hilton was responsible for Miliani's disappearance. However, he noted a few similarities.

Miliani disappeared as she was preparing to go hiking, and police believe Hilton targeted hikers. The areas Hilton is known to have traveled through brought him close to places where hikers disappeared, including Swain County.

Also, according to the store owner's testimony, the man with Miliani said he traveled from campground to campground, and Hilton was known to travel from campground to campground, Siske said.

Finally, there is the artist's sketch of the suspect. It shows some resemblance to Hilton, Siske said.

He also noted that in the case of Miliani, a body has not been recovered.

Miliani arrived in Bryson City Dec. 7, 2005, according to information previously published in the Smoky Mountain Times. She had spent the night in a Cherokee motel and gotten a ride to Bryson City with Cherokee Transit.

That morning, she rented a unit at Ye Olde Mini Storage on River Street.

Siske said some of Miliani's belongings were recovered from the storage locker in mid-February, with the assistance of the Bryson City Police and Swain County Sheriff's Office.

He said she may have come to the area to hike. He cited family members as saying Miliani liked to hike, but she was not in physical condition to do any strenuous or long-distance hiking.

At the time of her disappearance, she was 29 years old. She was described as a 5-foot-8 white female with brown hair and brown eyes. She weighed 220 pounds and had a tattoo of a lotus flower with Chinese letters on her lower back. She also had double-pierced ears and a small birthmark on her chin.

Siske asks anyone with information about Miliani to contact the Swain County Sheriff's Office at 488-0159, or him at (828) 230-5248.
