Escondido Police Ask For Help to Find Missing Teen

Story Created: Feb 16, 2009 at 5:58 PM PST
Story Updated: Feb 16, 2009 at 6:29 PM PST

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Police and family members today continued the search for a 14-year-old girl last seen Friday morning.

Officials are now investigating reports that Amber LeeAnn Dubois was seen in downtown Escondido on Saturday evening, said Escondido police Lt. Robert Benton.

Witnesses reported possibly seeing Amber near Palomar Memorial Hospital with two other teens, Benton said.

Amber's family reported her missing on Friday after she was last seen walking to Escondido High School at 7:10 a.m. wearing black pants, a black hoodie and black sneakers, officials said.

On Saturday night, Escondido police sent out "reverse 911" calls to homes within a 5-mile radius of a cellular telephone tower in northern Escondido that last picked up a signal from Amber's cell phone, police said.

Her family said that Amber has never run away and that it would be "completely out of character" for her.

Amber's family started a Web site that contains images of her and information about her.

On the day she disappeared, family members said Amber was excited about getting a lamb as a school project at Escondido High School. Her family said she is a good student and an excellent horsewoman.

Amber is about 5 feet 3 inches and 130 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

Investigators are asking anyone with any information about Amber's whereabouts to call Escondido Police at (760) 839-4722, or their anonymous tip line at (760) 743-8477.

Escondido 14-Year Old Missing for 4 Days

Reported by: San Diego 6 News Team
Reported by: Elex Michaelson
Last Update: 6:24 am

ESCONDIDO - Escondido police and family members continued their search Monday for a 14-year-old girl who was last seen Friday morning.

Amber LeeAnne Dubois was last seen walking to Escondido High School at 7:10 a.m. wearing dark clothes, said Escondido police Lt. David Mankin.  She was walking from her home on Fire Mountain Road.

It's believed the last known sighting of her was as she walked towards the school gates, near the football field, according to San Diego News Network Escondido editor Julie Pendray.

But Escondido police said Sunday night they are attempting to confirm reports that Dubois may have been in downtown Escondido Saturday night.

Investigators say witnesses reported possibly seeing the teen near Palomar Hospital with two other teens around 6:00 Saturday night..

Family members and friends tell SDNN's Pendray that Amber seemed excited to go to school Friday morning because she was getting her new lamb from the school's agriculture program.

Amber had saved her money to buy the lamb for a year, according to family members and had a check for $200 with her to purchase the lamb Friday.

According to Mankin, Amber has never run away, and family members said that it would be "completely out of character."

Police and family members have contacted Ambers friends and distributed fliers with her photo on them, he said.  A copy of the flier is linked to this story on the right.

Police believe the girl is in the Escondido area, but would not say why.  Amber is about 5 feet 3 inches and 130 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Family and friends have gathered at the family home to await any word on Amber.

Amber's mother, Carrie McGonigle said, "she gets along with everyone, not into gangs or anything, or drugs, no boyfriend."

She said life without her daughter has been miserable. "Its numbing...no other way to describe it, I drive around at night for hours just looking for her."

Her father, Maurice Dubois, said all parents should take note of Amber's disappearance. "I hope every parent out there will take 2 minutes to hug their kid today and take another 2 minutes to take a look at our daughter and help us get our daughter back in our arms."

Anyone with more information as to Amber's whereabouts was asked to call police at (760) 839-4722, or their anonymous tip line at (760) 743-8477.

Parents Plead for Help Finding Daughte

Related Topics: Amber LeeAnne Dubois | North County Times

Police are investigating the disappearance of a 14-year-old high school student.

Carrie Bess McGonigle and her husband, Maurice Dubois, spent the weekend posting nearly 2,000 of Amber Dubois throughout Escondido.

"No one has seen her," Carrie said. "It's like she vanished."

"It hurts a lot," said the teen's father,  Maurice Dubois. "I love my little girl to death. She's my baby and I want her home."

Amber was last seen just after 7 a.m. on Friday about a block from Escondido High school. The girl's parents said she was especially excited to get to school to exchange Valentine's Day gifts with friends. She also couldn't wait to pay for her baby lamb through the school's Future Farmer's of America program.

Amber is described as a shy girl who loves reading and science. Her best friend, Jade Fidel, said Amber would never run away.

"She's a nerd," Jade said. "She loves school. She loves her parents. She loves being at home. She would never do that."

Jade said she received text messages from Amber on Friday before school.

"No MySpace, no Facebook -- she likes to draw and read and take care of animals," Carrie said.

The high school has surveillance cameras throughout the campus, but it's unclear if police have reviewed them.

The teen's cell phone was activated for a few seconds Saturday afternoon, but other than that, her parents said, it has been off since she disappeared.

Police are also asking for the community's help but said they were checking into reports that the teen was spotted in downtown Escondido Saturday evening.

Anyone with information about Amber is asked to call Escondido police at 760-839-4722.

Missing teen's family puts up Web site to aid search

2:00 a.m. February 17, 2009

ESCONDIDO — The family of a missing Escondido girl has set up a Web site to help in the search.

Amber Dubois, 14, was last seen shortly after 7 a.m. Friday while walking to Escondido High School, said her father, Maurice Dubois. She lives a few blocks from the school with her mother, stepfather and stepsister.

Maurice Dubois said it was unlike her to be absent.

“She's a very structured girl,” he said. “She never misses school. She never misses anything. . . . When she's five minutes late, she calls her mother to tell her why she's going to be five minutes late.”

Amber also was excited about school Friday because she had a $200 check for an agricultural program and Valentine's Day gifts for her friends.

The Web site is amberleeannedubois.com. It has pictures and contact information. She is described as 5-foot-5, 130 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing dark clothing.

A report of a possible sighting of her Saturday in downtown Escondido is now considered unreliable, Maurice Dubois said.

Search Continues For Missing Escondido Teen

POSTED: 7:06 am PST February 18, 2009
UPDATED: 3:08 pm PST February 18, 2009

ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A door-to-door search for a missing 14-year-old girl resumed Wednesday, officials said.

San Diego Sheriff's search and rescue volunteers joined others Tuesday evening knocking on doors and handing out fliers with information about Amber Leeann Dubois, who has been missing since Friday, said sheriff's Lt. Mike Munsey.

Amber was last seen walking to Escondido High School Friday morning. Witnesses have told police that she was seen Saturday evening near Palomar Memorial Hospital, but police have not confirmed those reports.

Volunteers were expected to gather again about 8 a.m. Wednesday to check neighborhoods around Rincon Avenue and Conway Drive at the north end of Escondido, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Search continues for missing Escondido teen
2:00 a.m. February 19, 2009

ESCONDIDO: Police and members of the Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue team continued looking yesterday for a missing teenager in a northern Escondido neighborhood near where she may have been seen Sunday night.

Amber Dubois, 14, an Escondido High School student, was reported missing Friday night by her family. She had been seen that morning walking to school.

On Tuesday morning, a student who knows Amber told police she was certain she saw Amber on Sunday night walking with someone near Rincon Avenue and Conway Drive, Escondido Police Lt. Bob Benton said.

Since then, authorities have been going door-to-door in that semi-rural neighborhood, passing out fliers and searching in outbuildings and secluded areas.

“Everything we're doing is based on speculation and conjecture,” Sheriff's Search and Rescue Coordinator Don Parker said yesterday.

Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, said the girl who reported seeing his daughter doesn't know her well and he fears it may not be a reliable lead. –J.H.J.

ESCONDIDO: Many resources used in search for teen
Similar search last May located girl

By CHRIS NICHOLS - Staff Writer | Wednesday, February 18, 2009 10:34 PM PST ∞

ESCONDIDO ---- Despite the work of dozens of police officers and volunteers and the hundreds of fliers posted from Valley Center to Oceanside, there's been no sign of 14-year-old Amber Leeanne Dubois since Friday.

The brown haired, blue eyed girl doesn't fit the runaway profile, her family has said. She's been described as a bookish, sheltered girl who loves animals and has never talked about bolting from home.

Police say they have used every resource possible to find her, calling the search the biggest for a missing teen in recent memory.

Escondido police Lt. Bob Benton said between 20 and 25 investigators and community service officers have worked on the search, describing them as "almost our entire investigations division, as well as any additional staff."

Dozens more volunteers from the Sheriff's Department's search and rescue team helped scour the rural north Escondido area Tuesday and Wednesday, going door-to-door on several streets.

On Wednesday afternoon they were aided by a sheriff's helicopter. That helped give the team's leader a better lay of the land, said sheriff's Deputy Darryl Kimball, one of the department's helicopter pilots.

Those searches followed a tip from one of Amber's classmates at Escondido High School, who reported possibly seeing her near Rincon Middle School on Sunday.

Benton said Amber's father and mother, who are separated, along with the mother's boyfriend, all voluntarily took and passed polygraph tests. They have been ruled out as suspects, he said.

Amber's last known location was at 7:10 a.m. Friday, walking south on North Broadway toward Escondido High, Benton said. On the Web site her family set up, www.amberleeannedubois.com, the teen is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, 130 pounds with short to medium-length brown hair and bright blue eyes.

Officers have interviewed numerous friends and classmates and watched hours of surveillance tape to try to find clues about the teen's disappearance.

Escondido police launched a similar but shorter search last year after another girl disappeared.

Benton said 11-year-old Alani Vera was found two days after she went missing, when her father was arrested in Mexico in connection with her disappearance.

Benton said the Dubois case is different from those of most runaways. All of Amber's family and friends interviewed have said running away would be "out of character" for the girl, he said. They've told police she's never run away or even talked about it.

"She's not the typical rebellious teen," Benton said.

The lieutenant said records show police had not responded to the Dubois home, in north Escondido, for any reason since October. He said he did not immediately have access to records of any visits before that month.

Amber's parents live apart. The father lives in the Los Angeles area and has taken part in the search. Neither the mother nor father could be reached Wednesday.

Dave Cave, the boyfriend of Amber's mother, said Escondido police have "given their 100 percent" in the search.

He said the family's message for the teen is that "we love you, we miss you and we want you to come home."

Benton said police have not ruled out the possibility that Amber voluntarily left home, but added that there's little evidence to show she did.

Whether she ran away or not shouldn't change how authorities search, said Lisa Prazeau, whose 16-year-old son attends high school with the girl.

"If they have the resources to use, then use them," said Prazeau, who lives near the rural north Escondido area searched Wednesday. "They need to use every thing they can. Time is of the essence."

Anyone with information about the case should call Escondido police at (760) 839-4722.

Sheds, Backhouses Searched for Missing Teen

updated 8:17 p.m. ET, Wed., Feb. 18, 2009

Searchers were looking in sheds and backhouses in North Escondido Wednesday, days after Amber Dubois was last seen about a block from Escondido High School.

“We're canvassing the whole neighborhood,” volunteer Mike Fisher said. “All these are big properties, they all have outhouses, and so if you're trying to hide out, there's a lot of places you could hide. We don’t know what's going on, but we’re checking it out.”

Amber Dubois,14, was last seen just after 7 a.m. on Friday about a block from Escondido High school. The girl's parents said she was especially excited to get to school to exchange Valentine's Day gifts with friends.

Dozens of people with the sheriff's department and Escondido police have been going door-to-door searching for Amber after a student said she had seen Amber near Rincon Middle School on Sunday with someone else. The student didn't know if that person was male or female. The search is in a one-mile radius of that sighting.

“The sighting on Sunday night was deemed to be as reliable as it could be,” Sgt. Don Parker said. “That's actually a really good sign, because according to the witness, she wasn't in any kind of duress. It didn't seem she was doing anything against her will,” Sgt. Parker said.

Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, said he was encouraged to hear of the latest lead. Amber's mother, who describes her daughter as a responsible student with good friends, says she finds it hard to believe only one person would have seen Amber walking around, given there are so many posters up. But she thanks all those searching for her daughter.

“I think it's the biggest break police have had, so I'm praying to god it was her. It makes me feel hopeful, but I don’t believe it so much,” Carrie McGonicle said.

On Saturday, police received a report of Amber seen walking near Palomar Medical Center with two other teens but have been unable to confirm that report, according to the North County Times. The teen's cell phone was activated for a few seconds Saturday afternoon, but other than that, her parents said, it has been off since she disappeared.

“This has been ongoing for several days, so as it goes on, we get more worried. But we're hoping this will have a good outcome,” Fisher said.

Escondido Union High School District released a statement to parents suggesting they remind their own children to pay attention to their surroundings and walk in groups.

"We are concerned about Amber and are working in conjunction with the Escondido Police Department," the statement reads.

Anyone with information about Amber is asked to call Escondido police at 760-839-4722.

Family of missing teen hires private investigator
2:00 a.m. February 20, 2009

The family of missing teenager Amber Dubois has hired a private investigator long associated with local missing-children cases.

The FBI also is “providing investigative assistance” to Escondido police, FBI spokesman Darrell Foxworth said yesterday.

Amber, 14, was last seen Feb. 13 while walking to Escondido High School. There have been several possible sightings of her since, including one Sunday night that led police to search a northern Escondido neighborhood for two days. The family is not convinced any sightings are credible. Police said the person reporting the sighting was certain it was Amber.

Police are treating the case as a possible abduction but say anything is possible, including that the girl ran away.
“We have no indication that she has been abducted,” Lt. Bob Benton said.

Private investigator Bill Garcia, who has been involved in a number of high-profile cases in the county, said he is helping the family search for Amber, as well as aiding with publicity.

Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, who lives in Orange County and has custody of Amber on weekends, thanked the police for their efforts at a news conference yesterday in front of Amber's Escondido home.

Maurice Dubois said the family is convinced Amber has been abducted because it would be out of character for her to have run away. –J.H.J.

Family Asks for Help as Police Call Off Search for Missing California Teen

Thursday, February 19, 2009

The search for a missing 14-year old California girl was called off as it entered its sixth day Thursday.

The family of Amber LeeAnne DuBois said the teen was last seen shortly after 7 a.m. Friday while walking to Escondido High School.

Investigators have learned that DuBois talked to a friend on her cell phone on her way to class that morning, San Diego radio station KFMB reported.

Witnesses claimed to have spotted her in downtown Escondido Saturday and Sunday nights.

The teen's father, Maurice DuBois, said reports of a possible sighting of his daughter Saturday were considered unreliable. He said his daughter is very structured — not the type of girl to disappear on her own.

Police have decided to wait to get better leads before resuming the search, KFMB reported.

Meanwhile, family members have set up a Web site with pictures and contact information for the missing girl, and are pushing for the search to go nationwide.

Missing Girl's Parents Hire Private Eye

updated 11:47 p.m. ET, Thurs., Feb. 19, 2009

Local investigator Bill Garcia is now directing the search for an Escondido teenager missing since last week.

Garcia said he is handling the disappearance of 14-year-old Amber Dubois as a "stranger abduction," not as a runaway teen. He also said he was brought into the case because the Escondido Police are no longer actively searching for Amber.

Garcia will begin his own physical search later today.

In other developments in the case, Amber's parents, who are separated, along with the mother's boyfriend, all voluntarily took and passed polygraph tests, the North County Times reported. They have been ruled out as suspects, Lt. Bob Benton told the paper.

Searchers have been looking in sheds and backhouses in North Escondido, days after Amber was last seen about a block from Escondido High School.

“We're canvassing the whole neighborhood,” volunteer Mike Fisher said. “All these are big properties, they all have outhouses, and so if you're trying to hide out, there's a lot of places you could hide. We don’t know what's going on, but we’re checking it out.”

ESCONDIDO: Family of missing teen clings to hope
No new leads in case

By CHRIS NICHOLS - Staff Writer | Thursday, February 19, 2009 7:59 PM PST ∞

ESCONDIDO ---- The family of a bookish 14-year-old girl missing for six days believes she was abducted by a stranger and said it has hired a private investigator to bolster its search.

Maurice Dubois, standing next to private investigator Bill Garcia, held a press conference Thursday to ask for more public help in finding his daughter, Amber Leeanne Dubois.

The Escondido High School freshman was last seen Feb. 13 walking to school on North Broadway, family and police have said. A neighbor spotted her about 7:10 a.m. walking south near the school's football stadium.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Investigations confirmed Thursday the agency has offered help in the case.

Still, there have been no new leads for several days, police and family have said. That has led the family and Garcia to believe Amber was taken.

Dubois said Thursday he is clinging to community support and hope.

Hope is "everything" for the family, Dubois added, wearing jeans, sneakers and a worried look on his face.

"I don't want anyone to lose focus," the father added. "We need support from the community and friends."

The press conference was held in front of the blue-trimmed, two-story home on Red Mountain Place where Amber lived with her mother, Carrie McGonigle, who did not come outside the home. The quiet court includes tidy, well-landscaped suburban homes on the northeast edge of Escondido's city limits.

Police have described the search for Amber as the city's largest for a missing teen in recent memory. Police and family members said Amber does not fit the profile of a runaway, describing her as a good student, an animal lover and sheltered.

Her father and mother are separated. Maurice Dubois, who lives in Orange County, has participated in the search since the start, he said.

Amber's father and mother, along with the mother's boyfriend, all voluntarily took and passed polygraph tests, Escondido police Lt. Bob Benton said earlier this week. They have been ruled out as suspects, he said.

Benton could not be reached for comment Thursday.

An FBI spokeswoman declined to specify what kind of help it has offered.

"We have offered our assistance to the Escondido Police Department, but it remains their case until it is a confirmed kidnapping," said April Langwell, a spokeswoman for the San Diego FBI.

Garcia, the private investigator who said he has 17 years' experience, said computers from both the mother's and father's homes are being searched by authorities for any electronic clue the teen may have left.

He and Amber's father said the girl sent several text messages to her grandmother and one to a friend before going to school Feb. 13. They said the messages did not provide information about her whereabouts or seem suspicious.

The girl's cell phone was shut off shortly after the messages were sent, Garcia added, noting police relayed information about the phone to the family. The phone was turned back on once on Saturday afternoon when someone tried unsuccessfully to access the phone's voicemail and then shut off again shortly after, they said, adding no further readings from the phone have been retrieved.

Garcia said the phone was not on long enough for authorities to determine specifically where it was. Escondido police were not available to comment on the matter.

The investigator, his blue jeans and boots spotted with dirt, said he's continued to search several rural areas near Amber's home. He said he may organize a team of community volunteers to continue searching in coming days.

In the meantime, he urged residents in the north Escondido area to search their properties and report anything that's out of the ordinary to police.

Police and Sheriff's Department search and rescue volunteers scoured several areas near Rincon Middle School after getting a tip Amber may have been in the area.

Over the past week, Amber's father said, he's wrestled with a range of emotions from frustration to despair. While he praised local police for their help, he said the search must now go beyond city limits.

"It's been six days ... she could be anywhere in the country," he said.

Amber's family set up the following Web site: www.amberleeannedubois.com. It describes the teen as 5 feet 5 inches tall, 130 pounds with short to medium-length brown hair and bright blue eyes.

The family plans a candlelight vigil from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday in front of Escondido High.

Anyone with information about the case should call Escondido police at (760) 839-4722

Candlelight Vigil To Be Held For Missing Girl

POSTED: 6:29 am PST February 20, 2009
UPDATED: 6:43 am PST February 20, 2009

ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A candlelight vigil will be held Friday for a missing 14-year-old girl whose family has hired a private detective to search for her.

The FBI also is getting involved in the search for Amber Leeann Dubois, who has been missing for nearly a week, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The candlelight vigil will be held Friday in front of Escondido High School.

She was last seen walking to the school one week ago.

The Escondido Police Department is treating the case as a possible abduction but is not ruling out the possibility she ran away, according to the newspaper.

Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, who lives in Orange County and has custody of her on the weekends, said the family is convinced she was abducted, the newspaper reported.

The family has maintained that running away is "completely out of character" for the teen.

They said she is a good student who was excited about starting a school project that involved a lamb the Friday she disappeared.

The family has hired private detective Bill Garcia, who has been involved in a number of high-profile cases in the county, the newspaper reported.

Since her disappearance, there have been reported sightings of the teen, police officials said. But none has been confirmed by police.

Amber is white, 5 feet 5, 130 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes.

At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing dark-colored clothing, including a hooded sweatshirt and tennis shoes.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about Amber's whereabouts to call Escondido police at 760-839-4722.
