A message from the family:

"Truckers, (and all interested, caring persons)

Please check with your drivers and see if ANYONE picked up a small built man who may have had a red bicycle with him. He often hitched rides with truckers and put his bike on the back. He went missing Mother's Day, 14 May 06, was threatened by someone in the Cave Junction area, we don't know who.

He was sober for a week prior to leaving sandwich makings on his counter, frig full of food, trailer neat as a pin, laundry even done & folded in clothes basket.

He always used the name "Thatcher," his stage name for his gigs at nursing homes. He was outstanding on any keyboards, but left his behind, which he never had done, ever. Before he would have left them, he would have pawned them.

We are thinking he may be in an amnesia state, now knowing who he is. As he has never gone more than a week without being in touch with someone from his family. He hasn't gotten any SSI money either. He went to HS in Tucson, and went back there or Phoenix often. He would have been headed south, to warmer climate.

Police have no foul play leads, that we are aware of. Our beautiful loving son just up and vanished without a trace.

Any help you can give us, we appreciate it. Thank you.

Attached is info, pictures and flyers, to help you.

Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing.

Lee Mahurin, Patrick's mom"

A Message from the Family:

"To 18 wheelangels,

Our son, Patrick Warren Mahurin, went missing from his trailer court in Cave Junction, Oregon, 14 May 2006, Mother's Day. He left on his red bicycle to go into town around 5 PM after calling me and wishing me a happy Mother's Day and playing me a song on his keyboards.

He left sandwich makings on his counter, frig full of food, house clean, laundry done. He had been sober that whole week with plans to go to doctor there and get back on his meds. He was very depressed, was on the phone 2 to 3 times a day with his family, three times on Mother's Day with me, his mom. The last thing he said to me was, You know I love you, Mom. And he sang me a song he wrote.

His Neropsychologist feels Patrick may be in an amnesia fugue state, able to function but not know who he is. He often hitched rides with big truckers, even put his bike on the back end. He loved warm weather near the water. He went to HS in Tucson, and gravitated there many times.

Besides being neurologically challenged (having trouble processing what he hears), Patrick is bipolar and likes to travel. Some of the towns he stayed in over the years was, Oceanside, CA; Coronado Island, CA; Monterey, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Tucson, AZ; Corpus Christi, TX; Honolulu, Hawaii; Ft. Meyers, FL; Jonesboro, GA; Herndon, VA; Framingham, MA; Walpole, MA; Cape Cod, MA; Plymouth, MA; P-town, MA.

Det. Souza, Josephine County Sheriff's office has been working hard to try to find our son, but we are heart sick to hear about the ONC federal tree money being stopped, which, if it is, may end the help that office can give us. We need to write to our congressmen and alert them to the seriousness of this problem in the S. Oregon counties. This funding also provided schools, roads, and libraries, just to mention a few things, besides law enforcement and search and rescue services. Please pass this message on to your readers.

Patrick is an accomplished keyboard artist, but he left his keyboards behind for the first time in his life. In all his traveling he was never out of touch with us for more than a week, no matter where he was. He would call just to let us know he was safe and OK. He loves his family and we love him."

New lead goes cold causing investigation of missing Ashland man to stall again

By Michele Mihalovich
Ashland Daily Tidings

The mother of a man who went missing in May 2006 is still holding out hope that he, or at least his body, will be found.

Patrick "Thatcher" Mahurin, who moved to Ashland with his family in 1997, disappeared from his Cave Junction trailer on Mother's Day. Mahurin, a 42-year-old with a severe learning disability, was known around the Ashland community for always carrying his keyboard with him, which he played at various venues around town.

He moved to Cave Junction two months before his disappearance. His mother, Lee Mahurin of Ashland, said she usually heard from him several times a day.

On Mother's Day, she said he called and played her a song on the keyboard that he'd written. After the song, he got back on the line and told her he loved her.

"I just had this really foreboding feeling," she said. "I called him right back and he was gone."

Lee has not been impressed with the investigation efforts of the Josephine County Sheriff's Department.

"When Thatcher went missing, he's an adult, so they didn't have to do anything. I tried to get search and rescue to look for him, but they didn't do anything either," she said.

Lee and her husband Al hired a private investigator this July, but she said the investigator didn't turn up anything they didn't already know.

Rumors of a possible grave in Lynne Newbury Park in Talent resulted in three searches by Jackson County Death Officer Tim Pike.

In an e-mail dated Nov. 28, Pike reported he brought two cadaver dog teams with him on the third search.

"The dogs did not alert on any terrain nor show interest on any area," he said, adding that he wished he had better news for her.

Lee said she's glad the rumor was finally put to rest because she has her own theories about what happened that day.

"He told several people he could get to Gold Beach on his bicycle by going through the woods on Long Mountain Road," she said. "He'd been sober for a week, but he might have fallen off the wagon, possibly taking a six pack with him and fallen."

Lee also said there are a lot of pot growers back there along the road.

"It's possible he may have bumped into the wrong kind of people," she said.

Thatcher had also told his brother that someone was going to shoot him if he got drunk again.

Lee believes that if the police officials had taken his missing person report more seriously at the beginning, Thatcher, or his body, would have been found by now.

Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson, who just started with the department this January, said that regardless of whether a person is a child or adult, the department does everything it can to find the person.

He said he thinks the case is just about ready to get turned over to the cold case files.

"We're extremely short-handed right now. We've been inundated with crimes lately and need a hot lead for us to make this a priority," he said. "I do understand how the family feels. If I had a family member who went missing, I'd be desperate, too. The only solace I can give right now is to say that the case will never be closed until it's solved. We just need a strong lead in the case."

Anyone with information regarding his disappearance should call the Josephine County Sheriff's Office at (541) 474-5153 x3523.
