Police: Body Found Not That Of Indy Teen
POSTED: 6:24 am EDT April 22, 2009
OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Police in western Kentucky who thought they had solved the 1978 disappearance of an Indianapolis teen are back at square one.
In September 2007, Kentucky State Police announced that remains found in 1990 in Daviess County were those of Scott Michael Morris.
New tests on those remains revealed that they were not that of Morris or at all related to the Morris family.
Identifying the body was difficult because it was missing hands, feet and teeth.
The body had been found by hunters. The victim had been shot six times in his head and chest and appeared to have been beaten with a blunt instrument, police said.

In 2007, investigators thought they had an i.d. on the remains.
They thought it was Scott Michael Morris of Indianapolis, but DNA tests proved it wasn't.
Morris is still missing, and the handless, footless body, who was beaten and shot, remains unidentified.
Investigators really need your help.

Body found in Kentucky isn't Hoosier's

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Western Kentucky authorities who thought they had solved the case of an Indianapolis teenager missing for more than three decades have learned that new tests show the case is still a mystery.
Kentucky State Police announced in September 2007 that remains found in 1990 in Daviess County were those of Scott Michael Morris, whose family last saw him as he left a convenience store in 1978. He was 14.
But Tuesday, police said further testing revealed that the Daviess County victim is not related to the Morris family; Scott Michael Morris remains missing.
The body found by hunters in Daviess County was nude with the hands and feet severed. The victim had been shot six times in his head and chest and appeared to have been beaten with a blunt instrument. He also was missing all his teeth.

Ky. police to start from scratch in old case
April 22, 2009 10:02 EDT
OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky State Police detectives will start from scratch in a 19-year-old investigation of a missing person that they thought had been solved.
Authorities learned Tuesday that remains found in 1990 in Daviess County weren't those of an Indianapolis teen who disappeared in 1978. Police had announced in 2007 after DNA testing that the remains belonged to Scott Michael Morris. Police said further testing revealed he wasn't the victim.
Detective Juan Moorman told the Messenger-Inquirer of Owensboro that the faulty identification was because a technical document was misread.
Moorman said he plans to reread the case and see if anything was missed.
The nude body was found by hunters with the hands and feet severed. The victim had been shot six times and was missing all his teeth.

False Hope Torments Family 30 Years After Disappearance
14-Year-Old Boy Disappeared In 1978
POSTED: 4:44 pm EDT May 14, 2009
UPDATED: 6:20 pm EDT May 14, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS -- Every time an unidentified body is found it raises questions for an Indianapolis family still tormented by the disappearance of a teenage boy more than 30 years ago.
Scott Michael Morris disappeared in 1978 when he was 14 years old. Since then his brother, James Morris, has kept on the case.
"It's something you just can't imagine inside," he told 6News' Jack Rinehart. "We have been stressed and tormented way too long for this."
There was a break in the case in January 2007, when Kentucky State Police called the family to say that remains found in 1990 in Daviess County were those of Scott Michael Morris.
Identifying the body was difficult because it was missing hands, feet and teeth, but investigators said DNA evidence positively linked the remains to the disappearance nearly 30 years earlier.
"We thought, finally, that our brother was at rest somewhere and that we knew where he was," Morris said. "He was missing out of our lives, he was gone. But at least we knew he was buried and gone to heaven now."
But the family suffered a shock earlier this year, when police called once again, this time to say that they had mistakenly identified the body. New tests on the remains revealed that they were not that of Morris or at all related to the Morris family.
The blow has left family members questioning the future. For James Morris, every new case of a body found brings up a myriad of emotions.
"My gut twists inside. My whole inside just twists because I don't know if they going to call me on the phone and say, 'We found him,'" he said.
Family members said that Scott Michael Morris' grandmother -- now 102 years old -- hasn't changed her phone number since the disappearance in hopes her missing grandson will eventually call home.
The case is still open and is currently on its third detective. Police said they don't have any solid leads.
