Police search for missing Pittsburgh-area mother

Posted: Friday, September 30, 2011 8:57 am | Updated: 7:00 pm, Fri Sep 30, 2011
Associated Press

Police in and around the Pittsburgh suburb of Ross Township are looking for a 30-year-old mother of two who's been missing since her kids came home from school on Monday.

Ross Township police say Jamie Nichole Peterson's children, who are 11 and 12, came home and found their mother missing.

Police say Peterson's purse and cell phone were also gone, though her car remains parked in the driveway.

Darlene Peterson, the woman's mother, tells police and reporters that it's unusual for her daughter not to take the car because she has a recent knee injury and can't walk long distances.

Volunteers Search Ross for Missing Mother

Searchers who began walking roads and wooded areas about 11 a.m. looked for a purple Cricket phone case with flowers, a black cloth purse with white skulls and a pair of glasses with pink speckles.

By AmyJo Brown 7:30pm

About 75 people gathered at the Brighton Road Giant Eagle Saturday morning to help in the search for Jamie Nichole Peterson, a Ross Township mother who has been missing for two weeks.

Peterson, 30, hasn't been seen by friends or family since Monday, Sept. 26. Her mother, Darlene Peterson, reported her missing after her children, a 9-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl, returned home from school and couldn't find her.

Searchers began walking roads and wooded areas about 11 a.m. roughly between Route 65 and Perry Highway — narrowing in on the borough of Bellevue and the Seville neighborhood of Ross Township. They worked in groups of two and four.

By Adam Brandolph, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, October 11, 2011

[Excerpt..]

But police and a family in Ross still are searching for a mother of two who disappeared last month.

Jamie Peterson, 30, has been missing since Sept. 26, when her children, 8 and 12, came home from school and she wasn't there.

Her father, Jim Peterson, said he's grown frustrated that police won't fill him in on their investigation, but understands their reasoning.

"They don't want to blow the case," he said.

Vigil held to remember missing woman
Jamie Peterson, 31, disappeared Sept. 26, 2011

UPDATED 12:35 AM EDT Sep 27, 2012

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A family in Ross Township spent Wednesday evening at a vigil remembering a loved one who disappeared more than a year ago.

Despite a hefty reward and a desperate plea for her return, the family has few answers to what happened to Jamie Peterson.

"It makes me feel good Jamie has so many friends and people show up out of respect and out of love," said Jim Peterson, Jamie's father.

Jamie Peterson, 31, was last seen on North Fremont Avenue in Pittsburgh, where she lived with her two children. That's where friends and loved ones gather for a vigil and raised candles in her memory.

Jamie Peterson's grandmother fought back tears.

"She was such a sweet girl. She wouldn't hurt a soul," Jamie's grandmother said.

When Jamie Peterson's children came home one day last September, their mother was already gone and hasn't been seen since.

A former state constable, Jim Peterson admitted his frustration with the slow-moving wheels of justice.

But more than one year later, the family isn't giving up on the Ross police detectives and their ongoing investigation.

"He advised me there were two things they were just following up on, that everything is still very much active," said Darlene Peterson, Jamie's mother.

Jim Peterson said he will give a sizable amount of his personal money to anyone who provides information that leads to prosecution.

"I offer a $10,000 reward for anyone coming up with any conviction," Jim Peterson said. "With the reward my son has given, hopefully, it will bring somebody forward."

It's information he believes someone isn’t sharing.

“People have a conscience, and they should. I mean, anyone with children will understand where I'm coming from. The only thing I can think of (is) never feel that it can't happen to you, because it can,” he said.

When Peterson disappeared, a large group of volunteers gathered throughout Ross Township to look for the missing mom.

Friends and family are sure she would not have just vanished, and they suspect foul play.

In the 12 months that have passed, Ross Township detectives said they've received a few tips but nothing that has broken the case.

Peterson is described as white, 5 feet 3 inches tall, with a stocky build, green eyes and brown, shoulder-length hair that has blond streaks.

She wears black glasses with pink speckles. Her tattoos include a butterfly on her neck, a purple bear on her left arm, a cross on her left shoulder, a daisy on her right shoulder and a purple rose on her right breast.

Anyone who sees Peterson or knows where she is should call Ross Township police at 412-931-9070.
