WAUSAU (WAOW)--There's still no sign of 15 year old Kayla Berg, but Antigo police say they continue to receive many leads. Some tips have lead them to area stores. Once there investigators check out surveillance tapes to see if the person spotted was Kayla. So far, they have come up empty handed.

Kayla Berg was last seen August 11th in Wausau.

Antigo Police say the teen traveled to Wausau to see friends and was last seen at a home near Colonial Manor.

Candle light vigil for the birthday of a missing Antigo teen

Posted: Aug 30, 2009
By Heather Sawaski

ANTIGO (WAOW) -- It's been almost 3 weeks since Kayla Berg was last seen in the Wausau area. Kayla turned 16 Saturday, and friends and family gathered at a special candle light vigil in her honor.

Through the somber glow of candles, dozens of faces could be seen praying for the safe return of their friend and daughter.

"It's terrible," said Kayla's mother Hope Sprenger. "It's horrifying. It's the worst feeling in the world. I just want her back."

Kayla Berg turned 16 years old on Saturday. And friends and family came together at her high school in Antigo to celebrate the milestone, and also pray for her safety.

"I just want Kayla to be in everyone's prayers and to find a way safe way back home," her mother said.

The group sang some of Kayla's favorite songs and shared memories from times spent with Kayla.

"I remember her hyperness," said Kayla's friend Megan Jaje. "No matter what, she was always jumping down the hallways happy. There's nothing that could bring her down usually."

The family has a Sweet 16 birthday cake, but they say it won't be cut until Kayla comes home to have the first piece.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Kayla Berg, please call the Langlade County Sheriff's Department at 715-627-6411.

Latest: Police say missing teen may be a runaway, mom says it's unlikely

Posted: Sep 09, 2009 5:01 PM EDT
by Meg Bonacorsi

ANTIGO (WAOW) -- It's been nearly a month since a 16-year-old Antigo teen went missing in Wausau.

Now police aren't sure whether she was abducted or if she's just hiding out.

Kayla's mom Hope Sprenger says, "Kayla if you can hear this, please just call me, you're not in trouble. Just call mom. I need to know."

Even though 16-year-old Kayla Berg has been missing for nearly a month, her mother isn't giving up hope. And neither are the Antigo Police.

Chief Eric Roller says, "We're following up on everything we can. A lot of it has been "she's been here or there, been sighted here, maybe here".

The problem is, they haven't been able to confirm any of those tips. The man who saw Kayla last dropped her off at this abandoned home. He says he never saw her go in. The person she was meeting says he wasn't here.

Roller says, "To this day that's all we really do know."

Based on interviews, the stories just aren't matching up. That's why police believe Kayla may be hiding with friends.

Roller says, "We do feel that there is some deception there and they may know more about it. Again, it's nothing concrete but it is a lead that we want to go on."

But Sprenger isn't so sure, "I can't believe that they would lie. They've seen what I've gone through, what I'm going through... I can't see her doing this. It's completely not in her nature."

But police say if Kayla is hiding, it's the best case scenario at this point.

Roller says, "That's what we're hoping for. I mean we're just hoping that she's going to come back, she's safe and her friends knew."

You may remember we told you that police received a tip from a person saying they thought they saw Kayla get into a truck at the Wal-Mart in Antigo.

The driver of that truck was interviewed and cleared.

If you have any information about Kayla, call local law enforcement.

Family of missing teen to start fundraiser

September 18, 2009
Wausau Daily Herald

The family of missing girl Kayla Berg, 16, of Antigo is planning to hold a fundraiser to increase the reward offered by Langlade County Crimestoppers.

The family hopes the money also would pay for additional flyers and to hire a private investigator, according to a news release.

Her mother, Hope Sprenger, said rumors and false leads have kept the family in limbo and authorities have come up empty-handed.

Berg was dropped off during the evening hours of Aug. 11 by a friend at a residence near Colonial Manor, 1010 E. Wausau Ave., where she planned to meet another friend, according to Sprenger. She has not been heard from since.

Family & friends hold fundraiser to help in Kayla Berg search

Kayla Berg

Sep 20, 2009
by Cami Mountain

ANTIGO (WAOW) -- It's been a month and a half since an Antigo teen's mysterious disappearance.  Now, Kayla Berg's family and friends are doing the last thing they can think of to help in the search.

It's a room full of heavy hearts, where any sort of a smile quickly disappears.  The people gathered together to raise money to help bring Kayla Berg, 16, home.

"We're hoping to raise money to up the reward status, possibly a private investigator, although that's very expensive. But, definitely, to help up the reward money and help keep getting flyers out, gas everything."  Kayla's mom, Hope Sprenger, says not a day goes by that she doesn't search for her daughter.

Even at a fundraiser where many people knew the girl are posters with her face and information.

Sprenger says, "My motivation is that we will find her and we'll bring her home. That's the only thing that keeps me going everyday, is the hope of getting her back in my arms."

Kayla was last seen by a friend who dropped her off at this Wausau home.  That friend has been questioned by police and released.

It's what happened to Kayla after he left that's unknown.  Where did she go?   Who is she with?

Those questions haunt Kayla's family, her brother Jimmy.

Jimmy Berg says, "I love her more than anything in the world and I'd love to see her back as soon as she can. If somebody took her, we're praying to God she is ok."

Without answers Kayla's family is paralyzed with unknowns.  They're pleading one comes soon.

Sprenger adds, "If people are scared to say something to the police department, leave a note in somebody's mailbox, something to get the word out. Send a letter, anything, please.

An investigator with the Antigo Police Department earlier this morning.  He says they continue to follow any leads they get into Kayla Berg's disappearance.  They're not ruling out that she could be hiding out with friends, although her family says that's just not her personality.

If you have any information about Berg's disappearance, you're asked to call local law enforcement, or Langlade County Crimestoppers. That number is 627-NAIL. 715-627-NAIL (6245)

Antigo teen last seen in Wausau still missing

Kayla Berg

September 30, 2009
Wausau Daily Herald

A 16-year-old Antigo girl is still missing seven weeks after she was last seen in Wausau.

Kayla Berg was dropped off during the evening hours of Aug. 11 by a friend at a residence near Colonial Manor, 1010 E. Wausau Ave., where she planned to meet another friend, according to Berg’s mother, Hope Sprenger. Berg has not been heard from since.

Sprenger said it is unusual that her daughter has not checked in with her family. Sprenger said her daughter’s disappearance is suspicious and thinks that someone knows where her daughter is.

“I do not believe, she ran away,” Sprenger said. “It’s not in her nature to do this at all.”

Police in Langlade and Marathon Counties have been following up tips and possible sightings of Berg without any success. Antigo Police Sgt. James Kolpack said investigators don’t know if Berg ran away or was abducted. He said that the length of time Berg has been missing is unusual and that most missing children cases are resolved in three or four days.

Berg was wearing jeans, a T-shirt and a dark blue hooded sweatshirt at the time of her disappearance. She is five-foot, two-inches tall, 108 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a scar on her nose.

Sprenger said she and others have hung missing person posters throughout central and northern Wisconsin.

If anyone has information about Berg’s disappearance, they should call the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department at 715-261-1200 or the Langlade County Sheriff’s Department at 715- 627-6411.

Mother sure missing daughter abducted; cops skeptical

October 1, 2009
By Jeff Starck
Wausau Daily Herald

The mother of an Antigo teen missing since Aug. 11 says she thinks her daughter was abducted, though police continue to investigate the disappearance as a runaway case.

Kayla Berg, 16, was dropped off during the evening hours of Aug. 11 by a friend at a vacant home near Colonial Manor, 1010 E. Wausau Ave., where she planned to meet another friend, according to Berg's mother, Hope Sprenger. Kayla has not been heard from since.

Sprenger said her daughter had never run away before and it is unusual that Berg has not checked in with her family.

"I do not believe she ran away," Sprenger said. "It's not in her nature to do this at all."

Wausau Police Detective Kay Hanson said investigators in Wausau and Antigo have questioned Kayla's friends and family and followed tips in the weeks since her disappearance. Those interviews led police to conclude that it is more likely that Kayla ran away than that she was abducted, Hanson said.

"We don't have a witness and there is no evidence pointing toward or suggesting that she was taken against her will," Hanson said. Kayla willingly went to the home with a male friend and he has been cleared in the case, Hanson said.

Many times runaways will decide to return home within several days or weeks, Hanson said. In other cases the runaway or a person he or she is with is caught committing a crime and is located that way, she said.

Sprenger said she and others have hung missing person posters throughout central and northern Wisconsin to develop new tips. Despite media attention, advertisements and the offer of reward money, police say they have received few leads during the past two weeks.

"My only motivation that gets me up every morning is Kayla herself and the hope that she gets home OK," Sprenger said.

Lifelong Wausau resident and local dentist John Krasowski said he was heartbroken when he heard about Berg's disappearance. Krasowski has been running an advertisement the past few weeks in the Wausau Daily Herald asking people with information to come forward with information.

"If it were my daughter, God forbid, it's the least you can do," Krasowski said about the advertisement. "It is what you hope someone else would do for you if you're in that situation.
