Hannibal woman has been missing for two months, but mother determined to find her

By RODNEY HART Herald-Whig Staff Writer

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Cindy Young refuses to give up hope.

Her daughter, 21-year-old Christina Whittaker, has been missing for two months. Her disappearance sparked national attention and tips she might have been spotted in the Peoria, Ill., area, but the trail has gone cold.

Young thinks her daughter is still alive and wants to come home.

"I have to believe that. If I don't, I'd end up losing my mind," Young said. "I have to stay positive."

Whittaker was last seen in a Hannibal bar the night of Nov. 13. Her family has searched through three states and in the Peoria and Pekin area, following a lead that she may have been spotted in a Creve Couer restaurant in late November

Authorities say Whittaker was under the influence of alcohol when she left a Hannibal bar Nov. 13 after being kicked out for harassing other patrons. Young says she has been told her daughter was drinking shots of tequila.

Whittaker apparently asked for a ride home from several people after leaving the bar. Young said her daughter's cell phone was found on the sidewalk near the corner of Seventh and Lyons, not far from the bar on Broadway where she was kicked out.

Cindy Young believes people have information about her daughter's disappearance.

"There's people out there that know stuff," she said. "It's very frustrating. If they saw her that night (Nov. 13), if they have any information, please come forward and contact us or the police."

Young said a benefit is planned and donations are being accepted to hire a private investigator.

Alex Young, Christina's father, is a transporter for an Indiana company. A former carpenter, he is selling his tools to raise money to pay for the private investigator.

The Youngs are offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to her safe return. There is also a Web site with information.

Whittaker, the mother of a 8-month-old child, recently was arrested for driving with a revoked license. She missed a Dec. 18 court appearance. Court records show a warrant was issued for her arrest with a $1,000 cash-only bond.

Young said she and the father of the child, who is not married to Whittaker, are taking care of the infant.

Christina has been placed on Project Jason's 18 Wheel Angels campaign. A special poster has been made for her and can be downloaded and printed for placement. More information about the program, and the link for the poster can be found here:

http://projectjason.org/18wheel.shtml

In addition to the campaign, Christina was also featured in a national trucking publications, either Independent Contractor or TruckJobSeekers. These free magazines are distributed in truck stops nationwide and have a circulation of about 150,000.

Independent Contractor and TruckJobSeekers are two of Target Media Partner's many publications. In partnership with Project Jason, they each feature two missing persons each per month. You can pick up your free copies at a local truck stop, but if it's far from you, you may want to call and ask if they carry that magazine. These are NOT with the regular for purchase magazines.

We hope this helps in the search for Christina. Please consider printing and placing a poster in businesses in your community.

Thank you.

Story written by Christina's mother for the 18 Wheel Angels campaign:

Missing My Christina

Christina went missing from Hannibal, MO on November 13th, 2009. She was out with friends and then left the bar. We were told she was going to different bars looking for a ride home. We believe she fell victim to someone who may have taken her against her will. Her phone was found on the ground a block and a half from the bar. There was a hit and run at the very same address on that night.

Christina has never been away from home before. She has an 8 month old baby that she adores and we are extremely close. She used to call me constantly everyday. It’s been many weeks now since I have heard her voice. She had already done much of her Christmas shopping and was very excited about her baby’s first Christmas, which she has now missed. It was the first holiday she has ever been away from her family in her life.

We have heard rumors that she was taken to Peoria, IL area and is being drugged and forced into stripping and prostitution. I believe that could very well be possible. My daughter did drink with her friends sometimes and was on prescription medications for bi-polar disorder. She’s a good girl with a big heart who trusts everyone, which could have been what placed her into this situation.

The Hannibal Police have done a thorough investigation but has turned up nothing. Someone knows something but is not coming forward. If you have any information, please contact the Hannibal, MO Police at 573-221-0987.

Please keep praying for Christina’s safe return. Thank you and God bless....

Hart column: Missing woman's family disappointed in direction of 'Steve Wilkos Show' appearance

Published: 2/23/2010 | Updated: 2/23/2010

In retrospect, Cindy Young regrets appearing on a nationally syndicated talk show.

During Monday's broadcast of "The Steve Wilkos Show," taped about a month ago, Young appeared with her husband, Alex, to talk about the November disappearance of her daughter, Christina Whittaker.

Whittaker vanished after becoming intoxicated and getting kicked out of a bar in Hannibal, Mo. Her family has spent the months since her disappearance searching for her and still believes she's alive.

The Youngs thought they were going to talk about Christina, to make a plea for help in finding her. Perhaps they should have done their homework.

Wilkos is a Jerry Springer protege who apparently has made his name in the talk show world by being confrontational. An alert reader called us Monday morning to tell us The Whitaker taping would be on.

Also appearing on the show was the father of Christina Whittaker's baby daughter, Dustin Johnston, and Christina's boyfriend, Travis Blackwell. They were flown to Connecticut, and given lodging and a modest stipend for expenses, Young said.

Basically Wilkos interviewed each person separately, then brought them all together on the stage at the end. Wilkos pointed out that Blackwell had failed two polygraph tests (administered by the show's own "polygraph expert") when asked if he had anything to do with Christina's murder.

When Blackwell began acting nervously, Wilkos pounced.

Blackwell repeatedly denied having anything to do with the murder. All the while, Wilkos' bodyguards stood in front of a sobbing Alex and Cindy Young and had to physically separate the various parties several times.

"I am so disappointed in them," Cindy Young said Monday afternoon. "We went on the show to get help to find Christy, and all they did was make Travis look like a monster."

With the crowd shouting "Steve, Steve," Wilkos said Blackwell could have been out the night Whittaker disappeared to confront her after she was kicked out of the bar. Wilkos went so far as to suggest Whittaker could have had an accident and hit her head. Blackwell could have panicked and then dumped her body in the Mississippi River, Wilkos said.

"I don't remember that part," Cindy Young says. "I was so upset. They just shock you, you know."

Young says Blackwell took a polygraph test at the Hannibal Police Department after the show and passed. Blackwell comes to her house "every day to check on me," she said.

"I know he would never do anything to hurt her," Young says. "He was here that night Christina disappeared. My son and his girlfriend were right across the hall. He was here."

Young said representatives from the show called and asked if she would come back "after Christina was found."

"I wouldn't hold my breath," she says.

Bipolar N.H. Artist Found Frozen in Snow
Artist Sarah Rogers Was Found Dead After Going Off Meds, Vanishing in Manic Frenzy

By SUSAN DONALDSON JAMES
March 15, 2010

Since 29-year-old artist Sarah Rogers  bolted in a manic frenzy from her Barrington, N.H., home last December, her father has been distraught, knowing her history of bipolar disorder and paranoid schizophrenia.
Tim gives the true and false on depression and bipolar disorder.

Whenever she would have a psychiatric breakdown, "the voices in her head would say, 'run, run, run,'" according to her father, Robert Rogers, 58, of Davie, Fla.

Over the weekend, Sarah's body was found in the woods, just north of Augusta, Maine, three months after her car was found in a snowbank in the median I-95, without her cell phone and without her beloved 2-year-old son.

"This is something I feared all along from the get-go," said Rogers. "She never called us or her son over Christmas or on his birthday. It was my biggest fear."

A landowner came across a trail of clothes that led to Sarah, who had likely succumbed to the cold within a day after she went missing. Her disappearance had generated national television coverage as her family wondered if her psychiatric state had led to foul play.

"I am 99 percent sure it was hypothermia," Rogers said. "It was a logical scenario -- she went off in a paranoid state, trying to hide in the woods and watched her car get towed away."

Police had only entered her name into the National Crime Information Center(NCIC) two days after Sarah vanished -- enough time for her to wander off and die alone in the snow.

Barrington, N.H., police said a statewide "BOLO" [Be on the Look Out] alert was issued the morning Sarah Rogers went missing. That warning would not have been seen by Maine police, however.

"The inititial call went out within a matter of minutes from when the original call was received," said Chief Richard Conway. "Based on the information we had at the time, we acted appropriately.

About 110,000 missing persons are listed in the NCIC -- about half of those are missing adults and the other half are children under the age of 18. About 30 percent are believed to have some form of psychiatric problem.

But that only counts those who have been reported. Some experts say that number could be significantly more.

Most missing adults return within 48 to 72 hours, so police often don't take immediate action. But those with manic behavior caused by bipolar disorder can be the most vulnerable to self-injury or foul play.

Sarah Rogers' family knew she was headed for another breakdown when her speech became "irrational and faster," according to her father, but police were unwilling to intervene, even after she disappeared.

Police can enter the name of a missing adult in the FBI's National Crime Information Center, but only if "foul play" or "endangerment" is suspected.

Later that night, Maine police found her car with the door open, engine running and a baby car seat in the back in a snowbank along the highway; they assumed the driver had called for a ride home.

"Even with her purse in the snow and footprints, they only followed a short distance," her father said.

A canine search was not begun until a week after Rogers' car was found.

Bipolar disorder is a serious medical illness that causes shifts in a person's mood, energy and ability to function, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. In schizophrenia, patients can become delusional or paranoid and become self-destructive.

Doctors prescribe a variety of drugs to treat both illnesses, but medications are only effective when used continuously over the long term.

Cyndi Caron, president and founder of LostNMissing, the nonprofit organization that helped to find Rogers, said the number of missing adults with psychiatric disorders may be much higher than government statistics, and they are less likely to be found alive.

"Of the 40 to 50 children who are runaways or abductions, only two or three are located deceased," Caron said. "But for missing adults, the numbers are staggering --75 percent who are located are deceased when they are found."

Some kill themselves, others are found murdered, but for many an altered mental state causes their demise.

Eric James, 33, went off his bipolar medications and just walked in to the ocean at Rye Beach, N.H., where authorities found his body four weeks after he went missing.

Cynthia Young of Hannibal, Mo., said police have no leads on the whereabouts of her daughter, Christina Whittaker, who is bipolar and has anxiety and panic attacks.

Whittaker, who is 21, was last seen Nov. 13, 2009, leaving a local bar late at night after erratic behavior led to an argument with the bartender.

Since Whittaker's disappearance, her 10-month-old daughter cries every day, too young to understand.

"I honestly don't know if she took off on her own or if the wrong person got a hold of her," said Young, 47. "She's very childlike and had never been away from home."

Young fears that if her daughter is alive, she could be in danger because she has gone "cold turkey" off all the medications she has taken since she was 18.

But she also knows that Whittaker was frustrated with the side effects of those drugs and often took them incorrectly or not at all.

That, says Young, could have actually caused Whittaker's "mood swings" and ultimately her disappearance.

Jarrett Lee Burton disappeared April 4, 2007, near his home in Bethlehem, Penn., after going off his medications for bipolar disorder and attention deficit disorder.

"Something is not right about that night," said his sister, Janell Bennett, of Washington, D.C.

Burton, a star student who was a junior usher at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy, had his first breakdown while a student at Kenyon College.

"He had early signs and would slip back and forth," she said. "But he started acting weird after that. He was on all different types of meds."

A laboratory microbiologist, Burton had quit his meds, which he claims "weren't working anymore," and precipitated behavioral outbursts, according to his sister.

He had a "horrific fight" with his girlfriend and broke a window in the house, she said, storming into the rain dressed only in a ripped shirt and pants.

Bennett, who looks like Burton's "fraternal twin," said she is convinced he has wandered off and is too ashamed to return to his family.

"We were six years apart, but we had this weird connection," she said. "I get a glow in my chest that says he is alive getting medical help.

"He has a golden tongue, is very intelligent and if he is on medication, I am convinced he has found a way to change his identity."

Medicines used to treat psychiatric disorder have worked miracles, allowing millions of adults with treatable conditions like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia to lead near-normal lives.

But the power to heal comes with a caveat: Anti-psychotics come with side effects. And once patients begin to feel better, they sometimes stop taking the medications altogether.

Sarah Rogers' symptoms began her junior year in college. "All of a sudden she had a breakdown," her father said. "She wandered around not seeming to know who she was or where she was."

She went off the drugs when she got pregnant and just after the birth of her son, now 2, she had repeated incidents of wandering away from home -- once from Florida to Oklahoma -- and was hospitalized.

Candlelight vigil to be held for missing Hannibal woman

Published: 3/24/2010 | Updated: 3/24/2010

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- A candlelight vigil for a missing Hannibal woman will take place Thursday night at Central Park in Hannibal.

Christina Whittaker, who disappeared in early November, will turn 22 years old Wednesday. The prayer vigil Thursday starts at 7 p.m.

Whittaker's mother, Cindy Young, says friends and family may even sing "Happy Birthday" to Christina, whose disappearance sparked a wide-ranging search and family appearances on national television.

"I know God is watching over her. I have faith that she is alive and is going to be home," Young said.

Hannibal police continue investigating woman's disappearance.

By Staff reports
Hannibal Courier-Post
Posted Nov 15, 2010 @ 01:57 PM

Hannibal, MO —   Hannibal police say they continue their investigation into the disappearance of a woman last year.

Twenty-two-year-old Christina M. Whittaker was reported missing by her family after leaving a downtown bar visibly intoxicated on the night of Nov. 13, 2009. The case drew national attention.

The last time anyone reported hearing Whittaker’s voice was when she made a cell phone call at 12:30 a.m. Nov. 14, police said. The cell phone was found later in the morning one block from the bar where she was last seen.

Local and regional searches, including an alleged sighting near Pekin, Ill., proved fruitless.

“The Hannibal Police Department will continue to investigate her case until her whereabouts are known,” police said in a statement. “In the year Christina has been missing, the police department has expended countless hours following up on information, even as recently as this month. In doing so, the police department has investigated information received from sources ranging from  other law enforcement agencies to psychics.”

The department said it has called upon the Missouri Highway Patrol, Missouri Water Patrol and the FBI in its work.

Whittaker’s family has said it is just interested in finding her. Whittaker is white, five feet five inches tall and weighed about 130 pounds. She has brown eyes and red hair.

People with information about the case are asked to call (573) 221-0987 , ext. 5, or go online to www.hannibalpd.com/crimetips.

PEORIA, ILL. -- Peoria police say they don't know where a missing Hannibal woman could be, even though street reports put Christina Whittaker in a 30-block area there. A private investigator in Quincy told KHQA two months ago that he thinks Christina is in Peoria.

He also said there are several reports of confirmed sightings, but police say those reports are not from credible sources. Christina's family posted her picture in several downtown locations, hoping for any new leads.

Where is Christina?
Hannibal woman has been missing nearly two years

By DOMINIC GENETTI
Hannibal Courier-Post
Posted Nov 02, 2011 @ 10:28 AM
Hannibal, MO —

It was a cold November night. Friday the 13 to be exact.

Usually tall tales of superstition surround the sixth day of the week when the 13th day of the month falls on this particular day, but the events of Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, go way beyond fears of walking under a step ladder or in the path of a black cat. This was the night Christina Whittaker went out with a few friends in Hannibal and hasn’t returned home since.

“It just seems unreal to me,” Cindy Young, Christina’s mother, said. “It seems like it’s been five years since I’ve seen her, but when you think about two years — I don’t know, those anniversary dates are really, really rough. I’m dreading it.”

Christina, a lively 21-year-old with glowing red hair, brown eyes and an easily recognizable large smile, came across some friends she hadn’t seen in a while and wanted to catch up. They decided to spend a few hours together and have some drinks at Rookies Sports Bar.
Cindy and her husband, Alex Young, were on the road in Texas. Alex is a professional truck driver and Cindy was along for the ride.

Christina called to let her mother know she was going out for the evening. Because she was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, Christina had a habit of calling her mother several times a day. It didn’t bother Cindy one bit, however the idea of Christina going out that night didn’t sit well with her. Christina’s daughter, Alexandria, was only a few months old at the time and along with her brother, his girlfriend and Christina’s boyfriend, Travis, Christina was helping care for Cindy’s ailing mother.

“We were only going to be gone for three days,” Cindy remembers. “We were actually supposed to be home Friday night.”
But Alex’s truck was having problems and the couple lost a day of travel to get it repaired.

“I’ll be home tomorrow and you can go Saturday night,” Cindy told Christina. “I asked her not to go. I don’t know, call it mother’s intuition or whatever, I just asked her, just don’t go.”

Christina assured her mother it would only be a few hours and then she’d return home.

Mom keeps searching for daughter
Cindy Young still holds out hope of being reunited with woman who went missing from Missouri in 2009

PEORIA —

Cindy Young just spent a third Thanksgiving without her daughter, but she holds out hope they'll still be reunited this holiday season.

Christina Whittaker disappeared from Hannibal, Mo., on Nov. 13, 2009, leaving behind a then-6-month-old little girl, Alexandria.

Within days, the then-21-year-old was spotted in the Peoria area. Those sightings have led Young on an exhausting odyssey - a continuous search for her daughter that keeps turning up clues in Peoria but has also sapped what little resources the grandmother has to fund her own rescue efforts.

"We've lost or sold everything we had to be able to continue the search," Young said. "I'll never stop until I find her."

Young says authorities who initially provided assistance in the search for Whittaker have since written off the case as an adult runaway. But Whittaker's obvious adoration for then-infant Alexandria makes it difficult to believe the woman has willingly stayed away for more than two years.

Young now wonders whether a change in her daughter's medication for bipolar disorder and other unspecified mental conditions in the couple of months before her disappearance may have played a role.

Her daughter had what she described as a "child-like" mind that made her susceptible to manipulation. A different regiment of medication may have made her more unstable and naive, Young says.

Whittaker was last seen by family before going out with friends that November night. She apparently was separated from friends and looking for a ride home from a Hannibal bar.

Young believes she fell in with the wrong group of people that night - people who have since taken control of her and exploited her.

"I know she didn't just walk away," Young said. "Her family is her life. ... She had only been away from her family for one or maybe two days at a time her whole life."

On multiple occasions, sometimes for weeks at a time, Young has returned to Peoria to search for her daughter on her own. While handing out fliers, she has encountered more than one store clerk or person on the street who claims to have seen Whittaker.

"She looks a lot different than her flier picture now," Young said, noting more current descriptions have her as weighing less than 100 pounds but still with long, strawberry-blonde hair. "I can't pass out those flyers for more than 15 minutes before running into someone who's seen her."

Young plans a return trip to Peoria soon, though she doesn't want to say exactly when she'll be in town. She fears advertising her presence will ensure her daughter will remain far from the public eye during the trip.

But there is a message Young wants her daughter and anyone with her to know: she just wants her home, no questions asked. She just wants her granddaughter to know her mom through more than outdated pictures.

"We just want this nightmare over," Young said.
