New search fails to find missing Oregon boy

AP News | 01/30/11 06:51 pm

A new search for an Oregon boy who's been missing for seven months was unsuccessful Sunday, but officials said the investigation into the disappearance of 8-year-old Kyron Horman will continue.

"Time is an element in that we want to get this search resolved as quickly as possible. But this young boy has been missing since June, so in terms of our investigative capabilities time isn't a factor," said Multnomah County sheriff's deputy Eric Gustafson.

The boy disappeared from his Portland school June 4. Despite a massive search and an extensive criminal investigation, no sign of the boy has been found.

Search and rescue teams equipped with cadaver-detecting dogs focused Sunday's search in areas of Dixie Mountain outside Portland. About 50 searchers combed forested areas around turnouts, trailheads and gated logging roads. A thick fog settled over the area in late afternoon and the search ended at about 5 p.m.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Mary Lindstrand said the search for Kyron resumed Sunday based on specific information received by investigators, but she declined to elaborate.

The sheriff's office said 11 areas were to be searched and the search of all those areas had not been completed. The date for the next search had yet to be determined.

Kyron's biological mother, Desiree Young, told KATU-TV that she has been waiting some time for this search to happen. She said the Kyron Horman Task Force has shared with her the information that led to the search, but she declined to share it with the media.

"I'm excited that today's search will hopefully bring some closure to this case," she told the TV station.

The last time such a search took place was in November on Sauvie Island.

Kyron Horman update: Nancy Grace to cover missing boy, as case takes grim turn
February 4th, 2011 5:39 pm ET.

Friday evening HLN show host Nancy Grace will feature the story of missing Oregon boy, Kyron Horman, as sources Thursday report that the case has officially taken a grim turn.

Grace has begun airing a special series ‘Nancy Grace: America’s Missing’ airing 50 individual cases on 50 different weekdays, following her regular nightly HLN show.

Her next installment features Kyron Horman, who vanished on June 4 after attending a Portland area school science fair with his stepmother, Terri Horman. She told authorities she last saw the then 7-year-old heading to his classroom that morning. Kyron never made it to class and has not been seen since.

Terri has been a focus of the investigation and shortly after Kyron vanished his father, Kaine Horman, served her with a restraining order and divorce papers. In court documents he’s alleged she knows what happened to Kyron and has likely caused him harm.

Sources told The Portland Tribune Thursday that investigators now believe Kyron will likely not be found alive. This statement comes after a weekend in which cadaver dogs were used to search wooded areas north and west of Portland. This is the first time officials have taken such a negative stance in the case, previously announcing they had no reason to believe the boy was deceased.

Grace’s show featuring Kyron airs Friday, Feb. 4 at 9 p.m. ET on HLN.

Kyron was wearing a “CSI” t-shirt and black cargo pants when he vanished.

Anyone with information regarding Kyron Horman’s whereabouts is asked to call the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office tip line at 503-261-2847 or call 911 with emergency information. The reward for information regarding Kyron has been increased to $50,000.

Kyron’s mother says Valentine’s Day is difficult without son
Desiree Young says she believes the child missing for eight months will be found

By Jim Redden
The Portland Tribune, Feb 13, 2011

Desiree Young and her son Kyron Horman like to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Young wrote that the holiday is difficult this year because her son has been missing for eight months.

More than eight months after Kyron Horman disappeared, his mother issued a Valentine’s Day statement saying she will not stop looking for him until he is found.

Desiree Young says she followed a family tradition and bought a gift for Kyron, placing it at the Wall of Hope set up at a fire station near Skyline School in rural Multnomah County, where he is thought to have last been seen.

Terri Horman, Kyron’s stepmother, says she brought him to the school on the morning of June 4. He was marked absent that day but the school did not notify Terri or Kaine Horman, Kyron’s father. Terri and Kaine reported Kyron missing when he did not get off the bus at home that afternoon.

Although the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has conducted extensive searches, no sign has Kyron has turned up. Desiree Young and Kaine Horman have repeatedly accused Terri of being involved in the disappearance, but she has not been named a suspect or a person of interest in the case.

Kaine has filed for divorce and Terri is reportedly living in Roseburg, where her parents reside.

Here is Desiree Young’s statement:

“This holiday will be tough just as the others have. Valentine’s Day has always been our special day. When I was growing up my Mom always bought me some sweet little memento like a heart necklace or something special that was just for me, it made me feel loved and extremely blessed. I decided when I had kids that I would do the same. Each year I get something special for Kyron because he's my Valentine. I placed a Valentine for him at the Wall of Hope in hopes that he can feel my love for him, from wherever he is. I am deeply saddened that he is not here with me.

“Kyron I love you very much, I miss you and I want you home. I have a hole in my heart that will not be fixed until you come home. I will never give up, I will keep searching until you are in my arms again. God is looking over you and protecting you until I get there, so be brave, I am coming.

"The police and search & rescuers are still looking for you, they will not stop until you are found. We have adopted them into our family and they feel it is a personal mission to bring you home to us and they will not stop until you are home. I know that we are getting closer every day, I dream about finding you and I know they will bring you home.

“Law Enforcement continues to brief us regularly on the case, the investigation continues to march on, they will solve this case and bring Kyron home.”

Sheriff to update Kyron Horman investigation

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton will brief commissioners on the search for missing Portland boy Kyron Horman and the state of the investigation next week.

The 7-year-old Skyline Elementary student disappeared from the school on Friday, June 4, 2010.

Staton and Lieutenant Ned Walls will brief officials next Thursday and will not ask for any increase in funding for the investigation.

Kyron's step-mom Terri-Moulton Horman, had brought him to participate in a science fair and was the last person known to have seen him. While she has not been labeled a suspect, much of the investigation has focused on her and her whereabouts that day.

No suspects have been named in the case. She and Kyron's father, Kaine Horman, are in the midst of a contentious divorce.

Earlier this month rescuers and seven cadaver search dogs combed an area of remote parts of Northwest Portland.

So far the investigation has generated over 4318 leads filling 66 binders. Detectives have subpoenaed more than 300 sets of records, which can generate from 10 to hundreds of pages of paper records each. Detectives identified all 490 persons and identified 54 vehicles that were present at Skyline School on June 4th, 2010.

A year later, Kyron’s disappearance still a painful story
Desiree Young says she will spend sad anniversary remembering her missing son

By Jennifer Anderson
The Portland Tribune, Jun 4, 2011, Updated 3.5 hours ago

At the end of this first-person essay by reporter Jennifer Anderson you can read Desiree Young’s statement on the anniversary of her son’s disappearance.

A year ago, I remember hearing the news. It was like a gut-punch to every parents’ emotions: A 7-year-old boy with spiky hair, glasses and a toothy grin — a striking resemblance to my son’s best friend — had vanished from his school in an isolated part of rural Multnomah County.

As a news reporter covering Portland Public Schools, I had been to Skyline School before.

SEATTLE -- Seventeen months have passed since Kyron Horman vanished from his elementary school in Oregon.

Since then, detectives have invested more than 26,000 hours investigating the boy's disappearance and conducted more than 3,500 interviews. The boy's stepmother still remains under intense scrutiny, but no arrests have been made in the case.

"It's a little bit of mourning for loss everyday," said the boy's father, Kaine Horman.

Mother of missing Oregon boy files lawsuit against boy's stepmother
By the CNN Wire Staff
June 1, 2012 -- Updated 2220 GMT (0620 HKT)

(CNN) -- The mother of missing Oregon boy Kyron Horman filed a civil lawsuit against the boy's stepmother Friday, alleging she is responsible for his disappearance and demanding she reveal where he is.

The suit also seeks damages of $10 million.

"I hope that I am wrong, but I fear that he is gone forever," said Kyron's mother, Desiree Young. Her son was last seen on June 4, 2010, inside his Oregon elementary school.

His stepmother, Terri Horman, told police that she'd dropped off the boy that morning at Skyline Elementary School in Portland, Oregon.

"I believe that Terri Horman knows where Kyron is. I believe that Terri Horman is responsible for where my son is. The time has come for Terri to take responsibility for what she has done and to tell me and my family where Kyron is and how he got there," said Young, struggling to speak through tears.

Any money recovered through the suit will go toward helping families and parents of other missing children, she said.

Since Kyron's disappearance, most of the speculation has focused on the boy's stepmother.

In August 2010, investigators solicited the public's help for information about the location of the white pick-up truck that she is believed to have driven the morning of then 7-year-old Kyron's disappearance.

And in divorce filings, the boy's father Kaine Horman said he believes his estranged wife, Terri Horman, "is involved" in the boy's disappearance. Court documents also allege Terri Horman tried to hire a man to kill her husband.

Still, no charges have been filed against anyone in the case, nor has anyone officially been named as a suspect -- including Horman. A call to her attorney on Friday seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The civil suit was filed when it was because there is a two-year statute of limitations on such claims, said Young's lawyer Elden Rosenthal.

There is no such statute for a murder charge in the criminal justice system, he said, stressing his client's belief that criminal charges will eventually be filed against Horman.

"Until I can bring Kyron home, I will not rest. It's time for there to be answers," said Young.

Does Kaine Horman think his son, Kyron, is still alive? 'Yes, ma'am, I sure do,' he says
Published: Sunday, June 03, 2012, 10:00 AM
By Lynne Terry, The Oregonian

Kaine Horman will not be at work Monday on the second anniversary of the disappearance of his son Kyron Horman.

He's reserving the day for media interviews about his son, who was last seen June 4, 2010. Over the past two years, Horman has spent countless hours reminding the public that his son is missing and that he's focused on finding him. The latest event was held Saturday, with a Run for Kyron at Cook's Park in Tigard.

The case captured the national spotlight for months as investigators searched for signs of the boy who disappeared from his elementary school, drawing attention from people as far away as Europe. His story has fallen below the radar, but Horman does everything he can to draw public awareness.

He thinks every public event -- and more are planned through the summer -- could help resolve the case.

Does he think Kyron is still alive?

"Yes, ma'am, I sure do," Horman said.

Does he think he's sequestered somewhere?

"That's pretty much the only option at this point," he said.

Horman, 38, doesn't dwell on what might have happened to Kyron. Instead, he's planning for his return.

"I'm trying to keep pace with him," Horman said. "He's going to be 10 in September."

Just the other day, Horman bought new clothes to fit a taller, bigger Kyron. Kaine Horman updates Kyron's room as well, occasionally taking out toys he enjoyed as a 7-year-old and adding new ones.

He's sure Kyron would love Legos and still play with Hot Wheels. But perhaps his video game favorites have changed, so Kaine buys Kyron new ones from time to time.

"Just because he's not here doesn't mean there's anything different in terms of him being part of the family," Horman said. "He's part of the family in a different way at the moment."

Kaine Horman cares for his 3-1/2 year old daughter, Kiara, who goes to pre-school while he holds down an engineering job at Intel.

He expects Kyron to be counted one day among the other children who've been found after lengthy periods of time.

"As a parent, I don't want to hear this could take 15 years for him to come, but at the same time if he comes home alive it's worth every day," Horman said.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has worked up an age-progressed drawing of Kyron, depicting what he should look like now based on family photos. Desiree Young, Kyron's mom, and Kaine Horman have reviewed the drawing. The drawing will be released when ready.

Ernie Allen,  president of the center, said Kaine Horman is doing everything a parent of a missing child should do: Keeping Kyron's name alive.

"The big challenge is the world forgets," Allen said. "The media spotlight dims. Law enforcement runs out of leads, and the world forgets but the families don't forget. That's why it's so important to keep hope alive."

Allen, citing a number of children who've returned to their families after years, said there's good reason to be optimistic that Kyron could come home.

"Absolutely there is a chance," Allen said. "Justice Department research shows that even in most serious child abduction cases where kids are taken by strangers, in nearly 60 percent of those cases the child comes home alive."

Kaine Horman suspects his estranged wife, Terri Moulton Horman, could crack the case by cooperating with investigators. She took Kyron to Skyline School the morning he disappeared and snapped a photo of him next to his science project. But she stopped talking to detectives, hired Stephen Houze, a high-profile defense attorney, and moved to her parents' home in Roseburg.

Terri Horman's not been arrested but has remained a focus of the investigation.

On Friday, Young filed a civil lawsuit against Terri Horman, accusing her of snatching her son and seeking $10 million in damages. Kaine Horman, who is not involved in the suit, called it a "terrific development."

"We're going to take every avenue we can to bring him home," Horman said.

Stepmother of missing Oregon boy asks delay in suit that accuses her of kidnapping him

Updated: Wednesday, July 25, 1:45 PM

PORTLAND, Ore. — The stepmother of an Oregon boy who vanished two years ago has asked a judge to hold off hearing a suit that says she knows the boy’s location.

The lawsuit filed by Kyron Horman’s biological mother, Desiree Young, asks a judge to order Terri Horman to return Kyron or, if he’s dead, say where his remains are located. The lawsuit also seeks $10 million.

Terri Horman says in a brief filed late Tuesday that a criminal investigation is under way, and the civil suit should be stayed two years while it plays out.

Investigators have long focused on Terri Horman, although they have not named her as a suspect or filed criminal charges.

The suit accuses her of kidnapping Kyron, by herself or with help.

APNewsBreak: Missing boy's mother fights delay

NIGEL DUARA, Associated Press

Published 01:45 p.m., Thursday, August 2, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The biological mother of a missing Oregon boy says her civil suit against the boy's stepmother should move forward, despite the stepmother's request for a two-year delay.

Desiree Young says Terri Horman should not be allowed to delay Young's suit by two years.

Horman asked for the delay last month, saying a criminal investigation should conclude before Young's suit goes forward.

Young is seeking $10 million, and wants to force Horman to lead her to her son, Kyron Horman.

Kyron was 7 when he went missing after a June 2010 science fair. Young says Horman knows where to find Kyron or his remains.

Young's attorney, Elden Rosenthal, said in a Thursday filing that there's no Oregon precedent for deciding whether to delay a civil case while a criminal one plays out and notes that Horman has not been indicted.

"The big picture here is this: Kyron Horman has been missing for 26 months," the filing asserts. "Despite a monumental investigative effort by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, Terri Horman has not been indicted.

"The trail is getting cold. A stay of these civil proceedings would work a hardship, inequity and injustice upon the plaintiff, the public and the court."

The civil lawsuit accuses Horman of kidnapping Kyron, by herself or with help.

Investigators have long focused on Horman, although they have not named her as a suspect or filed criminal charges. In Horman's motion, attorney Peter Bunch wrote that the civil suit seeks facts that could lead to a criminal prosecution.

In a reply brief filed Thursday, Rosenthal says there's no reason to hold off on the civil suit, and denies the case is a "stalking horse" for police to use to pry answers out of Horman.

Civil allegations require a lower standard of proof — a preponderance of evidence — than criminal charges, which must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Horman's motion to delay the civil suit said that compelling her to testify could force her to invoke her constitutional right against self-incrimination, pointing out the weak spots in her case.

"She can defend herself," Young's brief asserts. "If she does not know what happened to Kyron, she can so testify."

Horman asked for and received a delay, or abatement, in her divorce from husband Kaine Horman, Kyron's father.

In Thursday's filing, Rosenthal said the delay in the divorce was granted only five months after Kyron went missing, when there was still a task force dedicated to finding him. The task force has since been put on hiatus.

"The situation is entirely different now," the filing states. It goes on to say that delays could be compromising to the search for Kyron.

Young "fears that the trail is now becoming cold," according to the filing. "Witnesses may die or disappear. Memories may fade. Records may be destroyed or lost. Foggy memories may harden into concrete false memories.

Kyron Horman's Stepmother Called 'Prime Suspect' by Judge

By ALYSSA NEWCOMB

Aug. 22, 2012

The stepmother of missing Oregon boy Kyron Horman was called a "prime suspect" in his disappearance by a judge who ruled a $10 million civil suit against the woman could proceed.

The opinion was issued in the civil case filed by Desiree Young, Kyron's birth mother, against his stepmother Terri Horman.

Terri Horman will not be required to answer any questions in the civil suit, since there is an ongoing criminal investigation into the boy's disappearance.

"The defendant is a prime suspect in the investigation," Circuit Court Judge Henry Kantor wrote, explaining his decision to allow the case to proceed but allowing Terri Horman to avoid a deposition that could potentially incriminate her in the criminal investigation.

But the judge said he believed the civil case could not be delayed.

"Witnesses and evidence may disappear. Memories may fade. The opportunity to find Kyron, alive or dead, lessens," Kantor wrote.

Young has said she believes Horman knows what happened to her son, who was 7 at the time of his disappearance in 2010.

"I believe that Terri Horman knows where Kyron is. I believe that Terri Horman is responsible for where my son is," Young said in June after she filed the civil suit.

Police have also have indicated there are discrepancies in Terri Horman's account of what happened on the morning of June 4, 2010, when Kyron disappeared, however she has not been named a formal suspect.

Horman admitted to hating her 7-year-old stepson, police said.

Kyron disappeared after his stepmother attended a school science fair where her stepson had displayed a project on red tree frogs.

She said she last saw Kyron walking down a hallway toward his classroom.

When Kyron didn't come home on the bus that Friday afternoon, his parents called the school, which in turn called 911, launching one of the largest search operations ever in Oregon.

Police have since spent more than 28,000 man hours searching for Kyron.

The missing boy's father, Kaine Horman, has since filed for divorce from Horman after being told she had allegedly tried to hire someone to kill him.

Terri Horman has released only brief statements through her attorney that she did not have anything to do with Kyron's disappearance.

Age-progression photo of missing boy released

Kaine Horman stands Monday in front of an age-progression photo of what his missing son, Kyron, could look like now during an unveiling for media at a trucking yard in Pacific.

Monday, January 28, 2013

PACIFIC (AP) — It's been nearly three years since Kyron Horman disappeared from a Portland school where his stepmother says she dropped him off.

An age-progression photo to show what he would look like now has been released in a poster from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The poster is displayed on the Gordon Trucking fleet of trucks in Washington and Oregon.

Kyron's father, Kane Horman, was at an event Monday at the trucking company yard in Pacific where the Washington State Patrol highlighted the latest addition to the Homeward Bound Program.

No arrests have been made in Kyron's disappearance. His mother, Desiree Young, is suing the stepmother, Terri Horman, seeking a court order to force her to say what happened to him.

Kaine Horman, father of missing Kyron Horman, will be at Portland Roadster Show

The father of Kyron Horman has not given up his relentless campaign to keep his son’s name alive even though the boy’s been missing nearly three years.

Kaine Horman said he’s setting up a booth at the Portland Roadster Show at the Expo Center from Friday through Sunday. Horman will be distributing free child ID cards to parents who bring their children to the booth.

Another highlight: The booth will feature Break the Chain and their racing team including the mini-monster "Hope" and the drag race truck.

Horman also plans a booth at Portland’s largest Garage Sale in April, as one of several upcoming events.

In an email, Horman said, “Even though Kyron has not been home he has had an impact on communities all over Oregon and the U.S. and we intend on giving back to our communities as much as we can based on the positive impacts he has had and things we have learned during this experience.”

Kyron was last seen at Skyline School June 4, 2010 at the age of 7. The investigation is ongoing, and so far no one's been arrested.

Kyron was last seen with his stepmom, Terri Horman, who’s estranged from Kaine Horman and living in Roseburg. Both Kaine Horman and Kyron’s biological mother, Desiree Young, suspect that Terri Horman knows what happened to Kyron.

Last June, Young filed a civil lawsuit against Terri Horman, accusing Kyron's stepmother of custodial interference and demanding $10 million in damages. Kaine Horman has also filed for divorce. Those two suits are pending.
