2 people missing near where Malibu bones found

Tuesday, August 10, 2010  By Subha Ravindhran

LINCOLN HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles County Coroner worked Tuesday to identify a skull and skeletal remains found Monday near Malibu Canyon and Piuma roads in Malibu.

The location is not far from where Mitrice Richardson went missing in September 2009. The coroner says it's too early to tell whose remains they are.

The coroner's office said that they are still waiting on a forensic anthropologist to come and take a look at the bones in order to determine if they are a man or a woman.

Speculation continued Tuesday if the remains are Richardson. Richardson's mother said it appears to be the most credible lead so far about her missing daughter.

L.A. County Sheriff's investigators spent another day combing through a steep canyon in Malibu Creek State Park, the site where skull and bones were found Monday.

Park rangers stumbled upon the remains as they surveyed an eradicated marijuana farm. Within hours, two families had raced to the scene to see if the body belonged to their missing loved one.

Pam Perryman says her husband, Timothy Perryman, disappeared six years ago.

"I just tried to figure out where would a person go on foot from our house, and he liked hiking and he liked the hills," said Perryman. "And he was upset, and that's where he would go if he was upset, you know."

But the family of Mitrice Richardson is also on edge. Mitrice, 25, vanished after being arrested and held at the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station last fall. The remains are located about 20 miles from the station and about two and a half miles away from where she was last seen by a local resident.

"I want more than anybody else for Mitrice to be alive, but I'm not naive enough to believe that she may not come out of this alive," said Latice Sutton, Mitrice's mother.

A few weeks ago, sheriff's officials announced an old friend spotted Richardson in Las Vegas, a claim Sutton found hard to believe.

"One thing I do know in my gut and as a mother who has nurtured Mitrice since she was born is she is not running around in Las Vegas," said Sutton. "That I do know."

For now, coroner's officials will be spending the next week examining the bones they recovered to see if there is any connection to these two missing-persons cases.

The coroner will officially examine and positively identify the remains by using dental records, and expect to complete the exam by the end of the week.

Families may find answers in dead body's ID

Monday, August 09, 2010  By Subha Ravindhran

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- California state park rangers discovered a badly decomposed body near Malibu Canyon and Piuma roads near Malibu Creek State Park on Monday.

Rangers were working on a marijuana-eradication detail deep in Malibu Canyon when they found the body about 1:30 p.m.

The body is so badly decomposed that rangers were unable to identify whether they are human or animal remains.

Authorities from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department haven't made any connections yet, but it's something they will be looking into.

The body was found in such a remote, rugged location that it was extracted by helicopter. It would have taken deputies hours to hike in.

Detectives will be examining the bones this evening. It appears the body had been out in the area for a long time.

"Park rangers on public land, they from time to time go out and sweep the area," said Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. "They hike back in for hours upon hours. They find groves because they want to shut them down and they always go back to where groves have been found earlier. This is what they were doing now and then they stumbled upon the bones."

Standing in a sheriff's station lobby Monday night, two distraught families listened as authorities relayed the latest information about the body found earlier.

For Latice Sutton, the discovery could her bring closure.

Her daughter, Mitrice Richardson, 25, disappeared last year after being arrested and held for hours at the sheriff's Malibu-Lost Hills station. Recently, sheriff's officials announced that Richardson was spotted in Las Vegas, but Sutton doesn't believe it.

"I would never hope for my daughter to be dead, I didn't hope for my daughter to come up missing, I didn't hope for my daughter to be discarded like trash, but it will give me answers if this turns out to be Mitrice," Sutton said.

"Hopefully with the dental records that we have, we can possibly identify the deceased remains as soon as possible," said Ed Winter, an assistant chief coroner for Los Angeles County.

Pam Perryman is convinced the body is her husband, Tim, an avid hiker who disappeared six years ago.

"Our anniversary is this Saturday," Perryman said. "We've been praying to find him. This may be him."

But authorities had few answers.

"We have two families here tonight that are checking on loved ones that they lost," sheriff's Lt. Mike Rossom said. "Time will tell."

Officials said they may have the body's gender identified by Tuesday.

Perryman Family Still Searching After Richardson Discovery
Relatives of Agoura Hills resident Timothy Perryman, who disappeared six years ago, are still hoping for closure.

By Danielle Jacoby |  August 16, 2010

When human bones were found in a Malibu ravine Aug. 9, Timothy Perryman's family arrived on the scene hoping that this would be the closure they've sought after six years of searching.

A forensic anthropologist examined the remains Wednesday, and dental records were compared with ones belonging to Perryman, a 53-year-old Agoura Hills resident who went missing after leaving his home around 1 p.m. March 28, 2004.

Described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 185 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes, the Scoutmaster was believed to have gone for a hike in the mountains near his home before he disappeared, according to Det. Diane Harris of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Division, Missing Persons Detail.

"Each one of the family members called me after they found those remains," said Harris. "I am sure they are torn between wishing it's him and hoping it's not. At least people would know. And that is the hardest part."

Perryman's youngest son, 24-year-old Mark, an Eagle Scout who will be beginning his final year at Cal State Northridge in the fall, was hopeful Wednesday.

"There is a backbone trail pretty near the site. It is why we are concerned that these remains may be possibly my father," said Perryman. "It is another reason to lead us to believe that he may be on a trail somewhere."

But on Friday, the remains were confirmed to be those of Mitrice Richardson, a 24-year-old Cal State Fullerton graduate who had been taken into custody on a citizen's arrest after failing to pay an $89 restaurant tab in Malibu.

"It's funny, because when these remains that are Mitrice's came up, there were probably so many people out there who didn't remember that my father even went missing," said Perryman.

Darrell LaMoure, director of the now defunct nonprofit Racing for the Missing, a division of the nation's Missing Children's Organization, remembered placing a larger-than-life image of Perryman on Jim Pettit's race car in 2005 to publicize his disappearance.

"I think it would have been a wonderful thing to find him, if for any reason—his family," said LaMoure. "What we found over the years was that if it was new in the news, the family got a lot of attention, but after awhile, it just died off. Unfortunately, in most missing persons cases, the law enforcement just doesn't seem to give as much weight to an adult as a child."

Perryman said he and his family are grateful for the sheriff's department's efforts and are sorry for the Richardson family's loss.

"It is very unfortunate that it is their daughter, and we are happy for them that they can find closure," said Perryman. "For us, we are going to keep searching for my dad. He has been missing since 2004 and he is still missing, and anyone that is willing to help us follow up and try to find him, that would be extremely helpful."
