SKY VALLEY - Sheriff's investigators began a search Wednesday at a home in Sky Valley for a body believed to be that of a woman who went missing nearly two years ago and is presumed dead, News Channel 3 learned.

Investigators say they were tipped off on the possible whereabouts of Shalonda Morris, who was the Banning woman first reported missing in October of 2007. In previous reports on KESQ, Morris was apparently headed to Palm Desert on the day she was last seen. Authorities arrested two people in connection to Morris' disappearance, Sean Michael Mihajson and his sister, Vanesa Mihajson.

Investigators later found out that the Mihajsons and Morris were partaking in a drug deal and that Vanessa knew her brother was planning on "ripping off Shalonda" during a drug deal on Oct. 12, as it was testified during preliminary hearings this year.

Vanessa and Sean were on the run since Morris' dissappearance but were later arrested. Both were charged with Morris' murder. Investigators, though, were not able to find Shalonda's body.

News Channel 3 was told Wednesday that a tip led the Riverside County Central Homicide Unit to a five-acre property in Sky Valley on 18th Avenue, north of Dillon Road, which may be the place where Morris' remains were buried.

Sgt. Dean Spivacke with Riverside County Central Homicide said over the past couple of months there was new information that pointed to Morris's body being buried on the lot, which happens to belong to the suspects' father, Victor Mihajson.

Cadaver dogs and underground radar were used in the seach for Morris.

As of Wednesday evening, there was no word yet if anything was found.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (951) 247-8700.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY’S MOST WANTED FUGITIVE CAPTURED

Investigator uses MySpace to identify location

INDIO, CA, Monday, May 11, 2009: A Riverside County Most Wanted Fugitive charged with murder has been apprehended, extradited to Riverside County, and will be arraigned Tuesday morning. Vanesa Michelle Mihajson, 20, was arrested last month by local law enforcement authorities in Havelock, North Carolina after the Inland Regional Apprehension Team (IRAT) was able to pinpoint her specific address.

District Attorney Senior Investigator Mike Petti, who is assigned to the IRAT team, began tracking Mihajson through her MySpace web page. There, he gathered valuable investigative leads allowing him to identify her specific address in North Carolina. Once he had located the address, the IRAT team requested the assistance of North Carolina law enforcement authorities who arrested Mihajson in late April.

“Riverside County is fortunate to have skilled and innovative investigators, like Mike Petti, committed to tracking down those who may seek to avoid justice,” said District Attorney Rod Pacheco. “The IRAT team has been a successful and effective collaboration that keeps our community safe from dangerous and violent fugitives.”

On October 12, 2007, Vanesa Mihajson and her brother Sean Mihajson scheduled a drug deal with the victim, Shalonda Morris. Witnesses confirm that Shalonda left her residence to meet Sean Mihajson at his Palm Desert condo and was never seen or heard from again. An investigation revealed that Sean and Vanesa murdered Shalonda, took her money and fled the area. Sean Mihajson was apprehended and charged with special circumstance murder for lying in wait and robbery. He is currently awaiting trial. On November 3, 2008, a $1 million warrant was issued for the arrest of Vanesa Mihajson. Vanesa Mihajson was named to the Riverside County’s Most Wanted Fugitive list on February 5, 2009.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies transported Mihajson back to Riverside County on May 7, 2009. She was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center. She is scheduled to be arraigned on one count of murder with special circumstances of lying in wait and robbery on Tuesday morning at 8:30 am in Department 3P of the Larson Justice Center. Mihajson remains in custody and is being held without bail.

Police Use MySpace to Capture 'Most Wanted' Fugitive

KTLA News 1:37 p.m. PDT, May 12, 2009

INDIO -- A 20-year-old 'Most Wanted' fugitive is under arrest for murder, thanks to the social networking site MySpace.com.

Vanesa Mihajson of Palm Desert, who is 7 1/2 months pregnant, is accused of killing a Palm Springs woman for drug money.

She and her twin brother, Sean Michael Mihajson, are accused in the October 2007 slaying of Shalonda Morris.

She pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

Mihajson appeared in court today without her brother, who was arrested last June and is being held without bail at the sheriff's jail in Blythe.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Graham Cribbs ordered that Vanesa Mihajson receive proper medical care while in custody and set a June 2 felony settlement conference date.

She was arrested April 27 in Havelock, N.C., when an investigator from the Riverside County District Attorney's Office tracked her down through her account on the MySpace social networking Web site, said D.A.'s spokesman Michael Jeandron.

The young woman, who was profiled on the television series "America's Most Wanted," was extradited to Riverside County last Thursday, Jeandron said.

Both siblings face a special circumstance allegation of committing a murder during a robbery.

That makes them eligible for the death penalty if convicted, but the District Attorney's Office has reportedly decided against seeking capital punishment.

Morris, 36, was last seen about 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 12, 2007, when she left her home in the 61000 block of Wilson Road to meet Sean Mihajson, according to the prosecution. She never came home.

A witness who spoke to investigators alleged the siblings had talked days before the murder about "ripping Shalonda off and killing her for the drug money," according to a declaration filed in support of an arrest warrant.

Prior to the meeting, Vanesa Mihajson purchased duct tape and plastic sheeting and delivered it to her brother, said sheriff's Detective Gary LeClair, who prepared the declaration.

Vanesa Mihajson told a friend that her brother "had killed Shalonda and was home cleaning up their condo," LeClair wrote.

The siblings later "counted the money that Sean had taken from Shalonda and they used the money to rent a house in Las Vegas after they fled the area," he alleged.

Jeandron said he could not comment on whether the body has been found or how the victim was killed.

Vanesa Mihajson is being held without bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

Her brother is scheduled to appear in court on June 19 for a trial-readiness conference.

Reported by: David Wohl  Created: 3/15 6:13 pm Last Update: 3/15 9:02 pm, 2010

An Indio Judge has dismissed murder charges against Vanesa Mihajson, a Palm Desert woman, for the second time. The charges were intially dismissed in October of last year, but the were re-filed by prosecutors.

Mihajson a 21 year old, was charged with the murder of Shalonda Morris of Palm Springs. Morris vanished in October of 2007 allegedly after she was involved in a drug deal with Sean Mihajson, Vanesa'a brother. Mihajson herself was a fugitive until she was finally apprended weeks after she was featured on KPSP Local 2's Wheel of Justice. She was then extradited from North Carolina to Riverside County.

"Im thrilled that the Judge finally found justice in the case..and dismissed the charge", said Mihajson in an exclusive interview with KPSP Local 2.

Morris, 36, was last seen about 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 12, 2007 when she left her home in the 61000 block of Wilson Road to meet Sean Mihajson according to the prosecution. She never came home.

A witness who spoke to investigators alleged the siblings had talked days before the murder about "ripping Shalonda off and killing her for the drug money" according to a declaration filed by detectives in support of an arrest warrant.

Prior to the meeting Vanesa Mihajson purchased duct tape and plastic sheeting and delivered it to her brother said Riverside County Sheriff's Detective Gary LeClair who prepared the declaration. The siblings later "counted the money that Sean had taken from Shalonda and they used the money to rent a house in Las Vegas after they fled the area" he alleged.

Sean Mihajson who is being held without bail at the Indio Jail is scheduled stand trial this year for Morris' murder.

Hearing pushed back in murder case

11:21 PM, Nov. 7, 2011

INDIO — A trial date will not be set until at least January for a Palm Desert man accused of murdering a Palm Springs woman when she arrived at his residence with cash to purchase marijuana.

Sean Michael Mihajson, 23, was in court Monday for a trial-readiness conference, but the proceeding was rescheduled to Jan. 13 because defense attorney Greg Johnson had a family emergency, according to court records.

Mihajson is charged in the October 2007 slaying of Shalonda Morris, whose body was never found.

His twin sister was convicted last month of helping him evade authorities and is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 18.

Jury Deliberations Resume in Mihajson Trial

The Palm Desert man is accused of murdering Palm Springs resident Shalonda Morris, who planned to buy marijuana from him.

Posted by City News Service , December 26, 2012 at 05:18 PM

Jury deliberations resume Thursday in the trial of a Palm Desert man accused of murdering a 36-year-old woman who planned to buy marijuana from him.

Sean Michael Mihajson, 24, is charged with the Oct. 12, 2007, slaying of North Palm Springs resident Shalonda Morris. He also faces special- circumstance allegations of lying in wait and murder in commission of a robbery, but prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.

The defendant's twin sister, Vanesa Michelle Mihajson, was convicted in October 2011 of being an accessory to a felony and was sentenced to three years probation and 120 hours of community service.

Shalonda Morris, who also went by the name of  "Shay," was last seen leaving her residence to meet Mihajson at his Palm Desert condominium, according to Deputy District Attorney Pete Nolan. She and a man named John Delgadillo, both cancer patients, had recommendations from doctors enabling them to buy medical marijuana and planned to pool their money to buy a pound of pot; but Delgadillo backed out of the deal and she withdrew more than $7,000 from the bank, according to Nolan.

Nolan said Mihajson asked his sister if he could borrow her van, then told her he didn't want her at their condominium and suggested she go to a mall. When she was at the mall, he asked her to buy plastic sheeting and duct tape at a Lowe's store, according to Nolan.  A friend drove her there, then delivered the items to the condo, Nolan said.

Mihajson's girlfriend, who lived with him and his sister, was also dropped off at the mall, the prosecutor said. Once there, Vanesa Mihajson told a friend her brother planned to "rip off" Morris and said, "Shay's gone," according to Nolan.

The prosecutor claimed that Sean Mihajson later picked up his sister and girlfriend and took them to a motel, where they counted thousands of dollars in cash. The trio went from hotel to hotel and eventually went to Las Vegas, according to Nolan. About two weeks later, they went back to the Palm Desert condo, and the women noticed that Sean and his girlfriend's bedroom had new carpet, new bedding and new curtains, Nolan said.

Mihajson testified last week that he had nothing to do with Morris' disappearance. He claimed that the sheeting and tape were to have been used to wrap up his marijuana plant before his landlord got to town and that he and his sister and girlfriend went to the hotels and Las Vegas to party. He denied making improvements to the condo.

Nolan said in his closing argument last week that "here is one reasonable version of events in this case that has been told by every witness in this case except one, and that person's version is wholly unreasonable."

He said witnesses who didn't all know each other or the victim corroborated information, and Mihajson's statements and actions showed "consciousness of guilt."

"Why (tell Vanesa), 'Don't say anything?' Why tell her that if there's nothing that he did and nothing that she knows? ... What is he feeling guilty for if not for his involvement in the murder of Shalonda Morris?" Nolan said.

He said Mihajson first planned to rip Morris off, then planned to kill her.

"He's lying about his involvement. He's guilty of murdering Shalonda Morris," Nolan said.

In his closing argument, defense attorney Greg Johnson reiterated what he had said in his opening statement: that there was no forensic evidence that Mihajson killed Morris, an alleged drug dealer who had served prison time.

"The theory is he blew her brains out and there's blood everywhere ... that's why he's painting and laying down new carpet. But there's not a speck of anything -- anything -- anywhere," Johnson said.

He said Delgadillo and Morris' domestic partner, who testified, were both convicted felons, something the jury could consider.

"These people are not saints, they're not angels," he said.

He said his client "didn't have a chance" when police wanted to question him, and lied to protect himself. But after he bailed out of jail, he stayed in the area to attend hearings for another court case instead of fleeing.
