The steep, tree-covered hillside to the south cast shadows as dark as the police work Saturday morning.

A team of bloodhounds joined law enforcement in a search for any possible evidence in connection with the disappearance just over five years ago of Beverly Ozuna-Ulrich, a young-looking grandmother who last was seen in Belle Fourche.

“We found things of interest and we will do more,” Police Chief Tom Maunders said as the team broke for lunch.

But bloodhounds have been documented finding human remains older than a century and a half.

Vigil set for Belle Fourche woman missing since 2003

October 10, 2012 6:30 am

A candlelight vigil for Beverly Ozuna Ulrich is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Belle Fourche United Church of Christ, according to Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere.

Ulrich, of Belle Fourche, has been missing since Oct. 17, 2003, when she was 42. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as standing 5 feet, 1 inch tall, weighing 130 pounds and having brown eyes, medium-length black hair, the tattoo "Steven" on her upper arm, and a pierced right eyebrow.

Ulrich remains on the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation website list of missing persons, and a PDF poster with a photo and description can be downloaded at http://dci.sd.gov. Search for “missing persons” and following the links.

Authorities say anyone with information about Ulrich should call the Butte County Sheriff's Office at (605) 892-3324, Belle Fourche Police Department at (605) 892-4354 or the state Department of Criminal Investigation at (605) 773-3331.

Family holds out hope for missing woman after 10 years
10/26/2013

Milo Dailey Butte County Post Staff

It's been 10 years since Beverly Ulrich of Belle Fourche vanished.

While authorities believe she may have perished, no one knows for sure and that leaves her family with only precious memories to cling to as another year passes.

"I don't want anybody around here to forget that she hasn't been found," Rose Grusing said of her sister who was a 42-year-old grandmother when last seen.

Ceremonies noting the 10-year anniversary of her disappearance are scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the United Church of Christ in Belle Fourche. It will include a memorial and a healing service.

Ulrich was last seen in the Belle Fourche and Spearfish area on Oct. 17, 2003, and is still considered a missing person. She was described in 2003 as being 5 feet tall and 130 pounds, a Native American female with black hair, brown eyes and a pierced right eyebrow.

Her sister believes that someone must have information on her whereabouts.

"I just feel like somebody around here knows something," Grusing said. "They're just not coming forward."

Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere agrees.

"We're still working it," he said this week. "Any time we do get information, we investigate it from top to bottom."

The frustrating thing for his office and South Dakota's Division of Criminal Investigation is that there's no hard evidence.

"We're quite confident she's deceased," Lamphere said. "But on the same note, we don't have the proof of that either."

Lack of proof has even discouraged television "cold case" investigators from pursing the case.

"I've been solicited from them," Lamphere said. "They're not really interested in missing persons."

Grusing won't say outright that she believes her sister is the victim of a homicide, but she does believe that somebody is responsible. She wants "justice."

"I have to know whoever hurt her goes to prison for it," she said. "Or I haven't done what I should have done for my little sister."

Lamphere says he believes she's right and said there is one person of interest who isn't interested in cooperating.

"I'm not sure where he's at now," the sheriff said. "He's kind of a transient."

Grusing has lost other members of her family in the years since her younger sister's disappearance. Potential witnesses who might have been able to help also have died.

"I've been real frustrated with it all," she said. "It's been a lot of dead ends."

Del Neumeister is the Belle Fourche minister who has presided over several vigils for Ulrich.

"The family is still hurting from not knowing," he said.

Neumeister is familiar with the Lakota side of the family.

"They do a lot of the Native American things," he said. "I try to do some things from the Native American side like a four-directions prayer.

"It's an honor to do that," he said.

In the meantime, the sheriff says his office will not forget the missing mother and grandmother.

"Any information would sure be appreciated," he said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Butte County Sheriff's office at 605-892-3324.
