Police say they have no new leads or witnesses to help them search for a 22-year-old Perth Amboy man who has been missing for a week.

Wednesday afternoon, Perth Amboy Police — with the help of state police, state park police and Franklin Township Police — conducted a search in Franklin for William Gu, a CUNY student who lives in New York and Perth Amboy, and was last seen March 7 in Brooklyn.

"The only lead we have been working has been the location of where the vehicle he was last known to be operating was recovered," said Det. Lt. Phil A. Terranova, of the Perth Amboy Police Department.

The car Gu was believed to have been driving March 7 was found abandoned in the Somerset section of Franklin, at the Somerset Diner on Easton Avenue.

"We have been conducting a check of the area for surveillance cameras that may have captured Mr. Gu driving the vehicle or walking away from the area," he said. "These checks have been unsuccessful at this time."

Terranova said police have not yet confirmed Gu was driving the car — a 1998 silver Lexus that belonged to Gu's roommate, who, police said, told them Gu was driving his car that day.

Kas Sahin, the manager of the Somerset Diner, said he saw the abandoned car in front of the diner March 7, and that it appeared to have been involved in a car crash.

Police previously told NJ.com that Gu was supposed to meet a friend in Staten Island March 7, but never showed up.

Gu suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 2011 car crash, and has "depression, paranoia and other psychotic behaviors, so there is increased concern for his safety," Perth Amboy police previously said.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black North Face jacket. He is 5 feet and 11 inches tall and weighs about 145 pounds, police said.

Anyone with information can call Det. Gilberto Simao of the Perth Amboy Police Department at 732-324-3813, New Jersey State Police at 800-709-7090 or the New York Police Department at 718-946-3311.

Police call quits on search for Perth Amboy man missing for one month

By Meghan D. Hodgin

Police say they don't have enough information to continue searching for a Perth Amboy man who has been missing for just about one month.

"Unfortunately, we have not received any new leads in this case," said Perth Amboy Police Det. Lt. Phil A. Terranova. "We have exhausted all search efforts and as of this time are not planning on any additional searches."

William Gu, a 22-year-old CUNY student who lives in New York and Perth Amboy, was last seen on March 7 in Brooklyn. That night, he was supposed to meet a friend in Staten Island, but he never showed up, police said.

A car Gu was believed to have been driving March 7 was found abandoned in the Somerset section of Franklin, at the Somerset Diner on Easton Avenue.

Kas Sahin, the manager of the Somerset Diner, previously told NJ.com he saw the abandoned car in front of the diner March 7, and that it appeared to have been involved in a car crash.

Terranova said police had not yet confirmed Gu was driving the car — a 1998 silver Lexus that belonged to Gu's roommate, who, police said, told them Gu was driving his car that day.

Perth Amboy Police — along with state police, state park police and Franklin Township Police — conducted a search in Franklin March 13 for Gu, but said previous checks of surveillance cameras in the area where the vehicle was found had been unsuccessful.

And as of Wednesday, the searches have remained unsuccessful.

"Our investigation will continue with weekly checks with friends and family members," Terranova said, but physical searches have ended.

"It is possible that Mr. Gu doesn't want to be found, but that would be complete speculation on our part," he said.

In the meantime, family and friends of Gu have created a Facebook group to streamline their own search efforts.

Cindy Chan, a CUNY student and close friend, said she planned to help put flyers up around Rutgers University with Gu's picture and description.

"Rutgers is targeted because that university is around Somerset Diner and I believe that's a good place to post up flyers so all the young adults around the area would know what's going on," she said.

Gu suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 2011 car crash, and has "depression, paranoia and other psychotic behaviors, so there is increased concern for his safety," Perth Amboy police previously told NJ.com.

Facebook page generates few leads in search for Perth Amboy resident missing for 2 months

By Anthony G. Attrino

May 09, 2013

Friends of a man who mysteriously went missing following a car accident two months ago haven’t given up on him.

They’re maintaining a Facebook page dedicated to finding William Gu – who lived in Perth Amboy and on Staten Island.

So far, there’s been little progress.

“I think I saw a person that may be him,” one user posted on May 3. “He was around avenue U around 12pm today, driving a early 2000's model honda civic in a dark green color.”

Though few and far between, it’s clues like these that have given Gu’s friends and loved ones hope of one day finding him.

Gu, 22, was supposed to meet a friend at Rutgers University on March 7.

He never showed.

Instead, the Perth Amboy resident’s car was found crashed and abandoned at a diner in Somerset County, about two miles from campus.

Gu’s keys and cell phone were inside.

This wasn’t the first time Gu was involved in an accident.

Perth Amboy police say Gu suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 2011 car crash, and suffered from depression, paranoia and other psychotic behaviors.

While a physical search by police has ended, investigators have said they will continue to check with friends and family members.

Anyone with information please call Det. Gilberto Simao of the Perth Amboy Police Department at 732-324-3813, New Jersey State Police at 800-709-7090 or the New York Police Department at 718-946-3311.
