Authorities in Bellevue, Washington, are searching for 2-year-old Sky Metalwala

(CNN) -- Authorities are searching for a 2-year-old boy in Bellevue, Washington, after the boy's mother said he went missing when she left him in her car to get help after she ran out of gas.

The mother, who was not identified in a police press release, ran out of gas Sunday morning in the northwestern area of the city with her two children, a 4-year-old and 2-year-old, in the car, authorities said.

The woman took the 4-year-old with her when she went to seek assistance, police said, leaving 2-year-old Sky Metalwala behind.

"Approximately an hour later she returned to the vehicle and the baby was gone," police said in a statement.

Authorities used tracking dogs to search for the missing boy.

Authorities were still searching for a 2-year-old in Bellevue, four hours after a Redmond mother discovered the boy missing from a car parked near the 2400 block of 112th Avenue.

Bellevue Police responded at 9:50 a.m. to a call from a woman who said she ran out of gas this morning and left the young boy, Sky Metalwala, in the car while she and her 4-year-old walked to a gas station. When she returned an hour later, 2-year-old Sky was no longer in the car.

“I don’t know if the child got out on his own..."

Police: No one but mom had seen Wash. boy recently

DONNA BLANKINSHIP, Associated Press, GENE JOHNSON, Associated Press

Updated 07:19 p.m., Tuesday, November 8, 2011

BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) — Aside from the mother of a missing Washington state toddler, no one has reported seeing the boy in the past two weeks, police said Tuesday.

Detectives have questioned relatives, family friends, neighbors — everyone close to the family of 2-year-old Sky Metalwala, said Bellevue police spokeswoman Carla Iafrate.

The last time someone recalled seeing him was about two weeks ago, she said. Iafrate said she didn't immediately have other details of the sighting, except that it was reported by someone who was not a family member.

Police: Mom of missing Wash. boy refuses polygraph

Associated Press | Posted: Wednesday, November 9, 2011 2:38 pm

Police in Washington state asserted Wednesday that the mother of a missing toddler, or someone close to her, knows his fate _ but no one is speaking up, even as hope for finding him alive fades.

"The public, I'm sure, is as frustrated as we are in the fact that mom isn't willing to come in and provide a polygraph," Bellevue police Maj. Mike Johnson told a news conference. "To be quite honest, that looks suspicious and we're puzzled by that."

The woman, Julia Biryukova, told investigators that her 2-year-old son, Sky Metalwala, vanished Sunday in Bellevue when she left him sleeping alone in her unlocked car for an hour after it ran out of gas.

Police: Missing Bellevue boy's mother had not run out of gas

By KOMO Staff & News Services

Published: Nov 9, 2011 at 3:42 PM PST

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- The mother of a missing Bellevue boy had not run out of gas on the day the toddler disappeared as she has claimed, police said.

Bellevue Police Maj. Mike Johnson said Julia Biryukova had enough gas in her fuel tank "to travel a considerable distance." Investigators planned to test-drive the vehicle on Thursday to determine whether any mechanical issues would have caused it to stall.

Biryukova had told investigators that her 2-year-old son, Sky Metalwala, vanished Sunday in Bellevue when she left him sleeping alone in her unlocked car for an hour after it ran out of gas.

Police dissatisfied with mother's cooperation in search for Sky Metalwala

by KING 5 News

Updated November 9, 2011 at 4:05 PM

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Police on Wednesday showed signs of frustration with Julia Biryukova's cooperation in the search for her missing two-year-old son, Sky Metalwala.

At two separate press conferences, Bellevue Police Department spokesman Mike Johnson said authorities do not understand why Biryukova continues to decline a request to undergo a polygraph.

Johnson said Biryukova's "story doesn't add up" and that "the mother's story is falling apart day to day."

"Her lack of cooperation so far ... doesn't help," he said.

By DONNA GORDON BLANKINSHIP, Associated Press

11:24 a.m., Nov. 10, 2011

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Investigators said Thursday they have no productive leads in the case of a missing Washington boy, five days after his mother says he disappeared from her car.

Meanwhile, the boy's father told a radio station that he cannot trust his wife, Julia Biryukova, to not hurt their son.

"Julia wants to hurt me, wants to have me suffer," Solomon Metalwala, told KOMO. "She knows how much I love my kids and tried to make me suffer throughout this dissolution, divorce."

Police looking for Sky Metalwala visited garbage transfer stations and landfill

by KING 5 News

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 12:57 PM

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- KING 5 News has learned that authorities searching for missing two-year-old Sky Metalwala inspected two garbage transfer stations and a landfill on Tuesday and now believe there is the possibility that they may need to begin digging through 50,000 tons of garbage.

FBI agents, among other law enforcement, visited the Houghton Transfer Station in Kirkland and the Factoria Transfer Station in Bellevue, as well as the Cedar Hills landfill where garbage that passes through those facilities is buried.

No information on what they found was provided.  It is not uncommon in cases like this to trace garbage.

Missing child case ongoing; Police fear for Sky Metalwala

The car a woman says ran out of gas – leading to the disappearance Sunday of her 2-year-old son – ran just fine Friday when police took it for a test drive. No gas was added before the test and no mechanical problem was found, police said.

The car a woman says ran out of gas – leading to the disappearance Sunday of her 2-year-old son – ran just fine Friday when police took it for a test drive. No gas was added before the test and no mechanical problem was found, police said.

And late Friday a police spokesman said there’s a “real possibility” that Sky Metalwala is no longer alive as the search for the toddler stretches into its sixth day.

More suspicion is falling on his mother, Julia Biryukova, to explain about the car and other discrepancies in her story.

Bellevue police retrace area where toddler first reported missing, get new tips

Posted by Janet Horne on November 13, 2011 at 11:15 AM

At a news conference in Bellevue, Maj. Mike Johnson of the Bellevue Police Department told reporters  that about 20 investigators this morning recanvassed the area around 112th Ave N.E. where toddler Sky Metalwala was first reported missing a week ago.

Police made 20 to 30 new contacts from the canvassing and got 12 new tips they will follow today, Johnson said. He said investigators are frustrated with the unavailability of the boy’s mother.

“We understand she’s traumatized and devastated by the loss of her son,” he said, adding that he hoped the mother would “gather herself” and meet with investigators soon.

Sky Metalwala's Mom on Police Radar as Possible Flight Risk?

By CHRISTINA CARON (@cdcaron) and KATIE KINDELAN

Nov. 14, 2011

Washington police investigating the disappearance of 2-year-old Sky Metalwala said they are keeping an eye on the boy's mother in case she tries to leave the country.

Sky was last seen Nov. 6 while in the custody of his mother, Julia Biryukova, a Ukranian woman who emigrated from Russia when she was 12.

Police in Bellevue, Wash., have been openly skeptical of Biryukova's story that she was driving her two children to a hospital when she ran out of gas. She allegedly walked with her 4-year-old daughter to a gas station, but when she returned to her car Sky was gone.

Missing Toddler's Mom Sought 'Sugar Daddy?'

By CHRISTINA CARON (@cdcaron)

Nov. 15, 2011

The mother of missing toddler Sky Metalwala may have created a profile on a dating website that specializes in finding "sugar daddies" for women.

Police have grown increasingly skeptical of Julia Biryukova's statements in the 10 days since her son Sky was reported missing. Biryukova, a Ukranian woman who emigrated from Russia when she was 12, told police she left the boy alone in her car while she walked to get gas with her 4-year-old daughter. When she returned, Biryukova said, Sky was gone.

Odd details emerge in case of missing Wash. boy

The Associated Press

Posted November 17, 2011 at 2:09 p.m., updated November 17, 2011 at 2:38 p.m.

BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) - From the moment a Washington toddler was reported missing 11 days ago, police had serious questions about his mother's story that she left him alone in an unlocked car after running out of gas.

The case has become even stranger since.

For starters, Julia Biryukova's car had plenty of gas and was running fine, police determined. She had told them it stalled as she was driving her 2-year-old son to the hospital because he wasn't feeling well, and that she left him inside as she and the boy's sister spent an hour walking to a gas station and calling a friend for help.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — After nearly two weeks of searching, police said Friday that they are still stymied in their search for a missing Washington toddler and released new photos of the family in hopes of sparking the memory of someone who might have seen the boy.

The new photos of 2-year-old Sky Metawala show an older child — more of a toddler than a baby. The new photos of his mother, Julia Biryukova, are strikingly different from the ones she gave to police.

The photos no longer show the smiling, glamorous blond from her social media pages.

Sky Metalwala's grandmother disagrees with court's custody ruling

by CHRIS DANIELS / KING 5 News

Posted on December 7, 2011 at 12:16 PM

Updated Wednesday, Dec 7 at 12:19 PM

Sky Metalwala's grandmother disagrees with a judge's ruling that grants custody of the missing two-year-old's sister to the children's father, Solomon Metalwala.

Asked by KING 5 reporter Chris Daniels to comment on the decision, Nadia Biryukova wrote in an email:

"I’m not exactly sure how to react to the decision. On one hand, I would like to be happy that Maile will be with one of her parents; on the other hand, I feel somewhat uneasy about the father. On one hand, I used to know Solomon as caring and loving husband and father; on the other hand, there is something pretty mysterious and questionable about him."

Two-year-old Sky Metalwala has been reported him missing on Nov. 6.

The volunteers have mostly been focusing on freeway routes stretching from Seattle, south to Portland and Gresham and then on to the Canadian border.

By MATT PHELPS

Kirkland Reporter Staff Writer

FEBRUARY 10, 2012 · UPDATED 5:19 PM

One of the most important parts of searching for a missing person is not letting the subject fall to the wayside. After the original story has played out and the trail runs cold, it is difficult to get tips from the public when the story gets lost in the natural changes of the news cycle.

For Kirkland resident Solomon Metalwala, the search for his missing son Sky will take a new turn Feb. 18 with a vigil for the 2-year-old boy. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Bellevue Downtown Park, 10301 N.E. Fourth St., across the street from Bellevue Square Mall.
