Family search goes on for missing Berkeley man, 23

By Kristin Bender, STAFF WRITER

BERKELEY Family and friends of a 23-year-old Berkeley man who vanished six days ago have posted hundreds of missing person fliers in hopes that someone has a clue to his whereabouts.

Wallace Arthur Manasseh Richards has not been seen since 11 a.m. Thursday (November 10), when he dropped off a friend at her job at Larry Flynt's Hustler Club on Kearny Street in San Francisco.

Richards was driving the friend's 2003 Mercedes Benz C240 because he had agreed to take it to the dealer for an oil change. He was supposed to return to the club at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to pick her up from work.

He never showed up and has not been seen or heard from since.

"That's not like Wallace, he's really trustworthy. If a friend asks him to do a favor, he does it," said his mother, Belinda Richards, from her Berkeley home where she has run a day care center for 20 years.

Wallace Richards is a 2000 graduate of Berkeley High School who was set to re-enroll at San Francisco State University to become a television cameraman, his mother said.

Family members filed a missing persons report Saturday with the Berkeley Police Department, which is investigating the case. Officer Steve Rego, a spokesman for the department, said detectives called the disappearance "a bit out of character for the guy."

His family and friends said Richards does not use drugs and rarely drinks alcohol. Police records show he was arrested once in 2001 for grand theft. His mother said the arrest stemmed from his unknowingly buying a stolen motorcycle on the Internet. The case was never prosecuted.

"I'm not saying he's perfect, but when he's in trouble, he calls me," Belinda Richards said.

She called her son's disappearance "very odd" and a first for him. She said she has no idea where he might be.
"If I know, I'd go and get him," she said, fighting back tears. She said her son lives at her Berkeley home but owns a home with a friend in American Canyon, near Vallejo.

She said she last saw him Nov. 9, when he was headed to San Francisco State to meet with a counselor.
"My gut is telling me that he is hurt and he can't get home," she said.

Belinda Richards is upset the LoJack car security system in the Mercedes will not be activated for at least another week because the owner of the car gave Richards the keys, and it is not considered stolen.

Richard's girlfriend, Sabrina Ford, 23, is organizing the effort to find her boyfriend and has recruited friends to help post fliers.

Richards is African American with a medium-brown complexion. He is 6 feet 3 inches tall and about 235 pounds.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call Berkeley police at 510-981-5900.

The same week Attari vanished, a 23-year-old African-American man named Wallace Richards of Berkeley disappeared after dropping off a female friend at her job in San Francisco and taking the car for the day. Her car turned up a few days later, but he never did.

But few have heard of Richards.

Run his name through an Internet search engine and just a handful of hits pop up.

BERKELEY POLICE OFFER REWARD IN MISSING MAN CASE

Posted: 12/17/05

BERKELEY (BCN)

The Berkeley Police Department announced Friday it is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of a 23-year-old man who has been missing for more than a month.

Wallace M. Richards III was last seen around 11 a.m. Nov. 12 in the 1300 block of Kearny Street in San Francisco where he was dropping off some friends at work, the Police Department reported. Richards never returned to pick his friends up as planned.

Police said Richards' car, a gold Mercedes-Benz C240, was later found abandoned in unincorporated San Lorenzo.

Richards' family told police "it is highly unusual for him to go this long without contacting'' them.

The Police Department is continuing its investigation of the case and reported that "while there is no sign of foul play at this time, investigators have not ruled it out.''

Police describe Richards as a black man standing 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 235 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and a green and gray lightweight jacket.

Anyone with information on Richards' whereabouts is urged to call the Police Department at (510) 981-5741.

When a friend goes missing

Joan Ryan   Thursday, December 22, 2005

Joshua Gray walked across a stage at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in May, accepted his bachelor of arts diploma from the dean of the School of Communications and looked into the audience. There, seated next to his adoptive parents, was Wallace Richards, his best friend. Wallace leapt to his feet and hollered and hooted, and when he made a toast at lunch afterward, he cried.

They grew up together in Berkeley, two kids who took divergent paths but remained like brothers. It was always Wallace who picked up Joshua at the Oakland airport when he came home from college. It was Wallace who bragged to his friends about Joshua attending Howard, Wallace who mailed Joshua $100 for homecoming weekend or for no reason at all.

Missing: Wallace Richards III

by Rita Mandelenis - Mar. 16 2006

Wallace Richards has been missing since November 10, 2005, but many do not have a face to go with that name. We all have pictures of Laci Peterson, Natalee Holloway, and many others etched in our minds, but not Wallace. The 23-year old is a black man. He has received little or no media coverage, making search efforts very difficult for his family and friends.

On March 10, four months to the day Wallace was discovered missing, family and friends are still pushing and trying to revitalize the search. They are planning on (at least) a week long “massive†flyer distribution. Supporters would like to see the flyers spread throughout the country and ultimately gain national media attention, but they are fighting an uphill battle.

Seeing the struggles of families of other missing people - last week it was the family of missing San Francisco father James Kim - also takes a toll on Belinda Richards.
