DIX HILLS - A woman from Dix Hills made a tearful plea today for help finding her husband who mysteriously disappeared on Friday.

Robert Mayer, 46, drove to Brooklyn for his job as an electrician on Friday morning, but never returned home. His wife, Ida Mayer, says he should have been home by 3 p.m., but the afternoon passed without a sign of him.

The next day, Mayer's red 2004 Pontiac was found at the Deer Park train station, which was disturbing news to his wife. "Other than his family, his other love is his car," she says. "He would never, ever leave that car at the train station."

The father of two had left his wallet behind in the family’s garage that morning, and Ida Mayer says she believes it was because he was in a rush to get to work on time. She describes her husband as the ultimate family man who never went missing before, has no known enemies, and loves to spend time at home with their two children.

"My daughter is in denial," she says. "She is 11, but my son is devastated. He just wants his daddy to come home."

Police are investigating the disappearance, but they say they don't believe a crime has been committed. Anyone with information is being urged to call police at 631-854-8252.

Dix Hills Man, Robert Mayer, Missing for Over a Month

Robert_Mayer_png_300x300_q85.jpg

Community, Charity & Cause, Family & Parenting, Local News
By Christian A. Published: July 17 2013

A Dix Hills resident and father of 2 has been missing since the middle of June. The search and investigation for Robert Mayer is ongoing.

Robert Mayer, a Dix Hills resident and lifelong Long Islander originally from Old Bethpage has been missing for over a month. A husband and father of 2, he was last seen on June 14th at Arrow Scrap in West Babylon around 2:15 PM; information on his possible whereabouts has been scarce since.

Mayer is a 6’1” white male, age 46 with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is presumed unshaven and was wearing jeans, work boots, and a gray collared polo with a J.G. Electrical logo on the day he vanished. He left his wallet and ID at home that day, though he may simply have neglected to bring them as he left for work around 4:30 AM.

A union electrician working for Local 3, Robert greatly preferred driving to jobsites over other forms of transportation. He was working on a theater at 262 Ashland Place in Brooklyn—a job which had been underway for several weeks and was not yet complete—where he is confirmed to have been on the morning of June 14th.

Ida Mayer, Robert’s wife, last spoke to him at 9:00 AM while he was still at work. Company records show that his cellphone was last pinged near Melville, which he was likely driving through on his way home, at 1:45 PM before going dead or being shut off at 2:45 PM. Records show no unusual activity on the phone which, contrary to earlier reports, has not been recovered. Neither the phone nor any of Robert’s credit cards have been used since.

Despite last being seen at the scrap yard in West Babylon, Robert’s car (a 2004 red Pontiac) was discovered by a family friend at the Deer Park train station of the LIRR’s Ronkonkoma branch. The car was locked and its keys have not been found; a green mountain bike belonging to him is also realized to have gone missing.

Peculiarly, the driver’s seat had been moved closer to the steering wheel than Robert usually kept it. Though he would sometimes meet with coworkers to travel into the city, Ida says that he would not allow anyone else to drive the Pontiac, describing him as “very possessive of his car.” Robert is also not fond of taking trains, abandoning that method of commuting 5-6 years ago, and is particularly distrustful of the Deer Park train station. A lack of security presence and surveillance cameras at the station made him worry that his car, like many others, would be broken into if he left it there.

“He… didn't trust that train station as there are many cars broken into. If he were to take that train he would borrow another car to leave at [the] station,” said Ida.

That absence of cameras also means there is no footage of Robert or his car entering the station. Police dogs searched the area within a day of the car’s discovery, as well as the grounds of Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center (though they did not sniff the Arrow Scrap yard), but did not pick up his scent. Investigators also examined video from a nearby candy store which has a security cam, though that does not seem to have turned up any clues.

Robert is described as having been in good mental health and leading a happy life; he loved his family, friends, home, and yard, and had a trip to Italy planned for July 7th. Local hospitals have been checked, flyers have been handed out in areas Robert may have been, and several searches have been conducted, but his location is still unknown.

Anyone with information that could potentially be relevant to the investigation is encouraged to contact the Suffolk County Second Police Squad at 631-854-8252.

Dix Hills Father of Two, Robert Mayer, Still Missing After Seven Weeks

Published on July 31, 2013 ·

(Long Island, NY) Robert Mayer, a Dix Hills father of two has been missing for seven weeks, Suffolk County police said. He was last seen at Arrow Scrap Yard in West Babylon at 2:15 on Friday June 14.

He is a union electrician working for Local 3. On the morning of June 14 he drove to work at a theater at 262 Ashland Place in Brooklyn. His wife Ida spoke to him at 9am.

“It was two days before Father’s Day,” Ida Mayer said. “We were having people over. We were talking about the menu and what he was going to barbeque. He loves to barbeque.”

He was seen at work at 12:30. His phone was either turned off or died at 2:45 that day. He doesn’t have any identification on him as he left his wallet at home. The next day his car, a 2004 Pontiac GTO, was found at the Deer Park train station a few miles from his home.

“He would never leave his car at the train station,” Ida Mayer said. “He didn’t trust the train station. There had been lots of thefts there. Apart from his kids that car was his baby. It’s in perfect condition.”

He also didn’t take the train, Ida Mayer said.

“Even when we go into the city we drive in,” she said. “He hasn’t taken the train in years. My parents live in Queens. He would prefer to drive to Queens, leave the car there and take the subway.”

The driver’s seat in the car was moved up and was not in the position he would drive in.

The day the car was found there was a police search including the K-9 unit, she said. There were also searches through Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center and Edgewood Preserve using K-9s. Nothing was found. All the hospitals were checked the first night he went missing.

Robert Mayer is 46, white, 6 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds. His has brown hair and green eyes. He is believed to be unshaven. His left middle finger has a slightly chopped off tip – he has the nail, but his middle finger is shorter than his index finger. He has a mole under his right eye. When last seen he was wearing a grey polo shirt, light blue jeans, black work boots and ray ban sunglasses.

“We’ve been married 18 years. He never spent a night away from home, much less seven weeks,” Ida Mayer said. “Something is wrong. He’s a homebody. He loves being home with his kids.”

“The outpouring from the public is greatly appreciated,” Ida Mayer said. “There is a Robert Mayer search group on Facebook and it has more than 870 members and is growing everyday.”

Anyone with any information regarding the search can call the Suffolk County Second Squad Detectives at 631-854-8252 or for those who wish to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Missing Man’s Family Continues To Organize Family & Friends

August 1, 2013 8:56 pm

Robert Mayer was reported missing on June 15, after he did not come home from his work as an electrician on the evening of the 14th. This was extremely out of character for him and was an immediate red flag to his wife and 2 children who had plans for Father’s Day weekend and a vacation planned for the week of July 7th.

Robert was last seen on June 14 at 2:15 pm, at a scrap yard in West Babylon, NY, where he would visit occasionally to scrap copper from the job site he was working at in Brooklyn. From there, nothing is known of his whereabouts, but his 2004 Pontiac GTO was abandoned at the Deer Park LIRR station. His next destination should have been his home in Dix Hills, by car. He doesn’t take the train, because he doesn’t trust those parking lots, he would actually go to great lengths to avoid parking there.

Ida Mayer, wife of missing Dix Hills man Robert Mayer, continues to organize friends and family as well as many concerned people whom have never met the Mayers. On Sunday, July 21, a search group met and searched the Deer Park, New York train station and surrounding area looking for clues.

A Facebook group has been started to provide ideas and support to Rob’s family. “Robert Mayer Search Group” is a place where 800 people, many of whom have never met the Mayers, meet to plan searches, create and distribute fliers, or leave words of support.

The family asks that anyone who has information on Robert Mayer, no matter how trivial you think it might be, to please call Suffolk County Police at 631-854-8252.

Distraught Family Offering Reward For Information Regarding L.I. Man’s Disappearance
Missing For Nearly 2 Months, Robert Mayer's Absence Is Shrouded In Mystery

August 5, 2013 8:24 PM

DIX HILLS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — He went to work and never came home. A Long Island family has spent the past two months searching for their father and husband. Now, a reward has been offered by the heartsick family.

Robert Mayer, 46, who was said to be a devoted husband to Ida Mayer, and father to an 11-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, as his family prepared for Father’s Day and a trip to Italy, leaving those close to him baffled.

“I spoke to him in the morning, discussing our plans for Father’s Day. He told me to buy lobsters, oysters,” a tearful Ida Mayer told CBS 2′s Jennifer McLogan on Monday.

The Dix Hills man is a union electrician in Brooklyn. He left for work on June 14, was spotted at a scrap metal yard in West Babylon that afternoon, and his 2004 Pontiac GTO was discovered at the Deer Park Train Station. Everything was missing from the vehicle’s trunk, his cellphone was pinged several miles north of the station before going dead.

Mayer’s green mountain bike was also missing from the family’s home.

“I haven’t spoken to him since. He wouldn’t leave me or the kids, nor his mom. His mom is devastated. My parents are devastated,” Ida said, “He’s got too much that he loves here.”

A Facebook page for Mayer has gained hundreds of followers and searches and rallies have been planned.

“Our children shouldn’t go through this. They shouldn’t have to ask every day, ‘how much longer mom?’” Mayer said.

Mayer’s family has offered a $5,000 reward for information regarding his disappearance. Suffolk County cops told CBS 2 that the investigation remains open.
