Steele joins Racing for the Missing program

by Darrell LaMoure

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Fifteen-year-old Phoenix resident Tony Steele inspires to be the best he can but hasn’t lost sight of reality. In May of 2004 Tony became the youngest driver in Manzanita Speedway (Manzi) history as he won his first of many factory stock car events that year. When he is not in school he spends every free minute in the race shop with Dad (Pete) wrenching away at the #61 SCRA (Stock Car Racing Association) factory stock racecar.

In the off season Tony and his Dad worked hard to prepare for the 2005 season, with the help of Flexi Flyer Motorsports and their vast experience they did exactly that, built a new rocket a 1979 Pontiac Firebird.

Saturday March 5th is opening night at Canyon Raceway the “Diamond I the Desert†located west of carefree hwy off of 99th avenue. Monday the 7th Tony and his Manuels Mexican Restaurant sponsored hot rod will be on location at Manzi from 5-9 AM as part of the Channel 3-Morning newscast anchored by Brad Perry and his crew.

In November the Steele family (Pete & Tony) contacted old friend and pilot of the NASCAR Elite Division Southwest Series NAPA Auto Parts Chevy Darrell LaMoure. Darrell and his wife Shelley started a Personal Safety & Awareness program in 1999 which provides additional services to family’s with missing persons.

“We have always supported Darrell and his cause, I am young but I recognize the importance of giving back so we are going to help him and his effort to raise awareness†said Tony Steele

Racing for the Missing (RFTM) www.theyaremissed.org/rftm reorganized in 2005 and became a division of the “Nations Missing Children’s Organization Center for Missing Adults†www.nmco.org.

â€ÂÂOur mission is to reach out to the public from coast to coast, we are partnering up with local and national teams in hopes of generating that one lead that will assist law enforcement while providing the public with personal safety tips and information†Said Darrell LaMoure

RFTM utilizes racecars, as the instrument for awareness, the hood area of a racecar is the most popular & valuable location also, the most observed. By placing a larger then life image of a missing person and their contact information we can accomplish many goals. Assist law enforcement with lead generation; send a positive message of HOPE to race fans and most importantly to the families we work with.

Profile: RFTM profiles missing local boy, Jesse Florez (17) Jesse was fourteen when he disappeared on September 14, 2001, last seen around 55th avenue and Indian School road. Jesse is still Missing!

Press release from our friends at the NCMA:

"LOCAL NASCAR DRIVER RETIRES FROM TRACK BUT NOT HIS MISSION

November 9, 2006 (PHOENIX, AZ) – Local NASCAR driver, Darrell LaMoure will be driving in Thursday’s AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series race at Phoenix International Raceway during Konica Minolta 125 at 7:00pm. This race will mark the end of twenty years in competitive racing but not the mission to help families of missing persons.

LaMoure has worked with the Phoenix-based Nation’s Missing Children Organization, Inc. & National Center for Missing Adults, since the disappearance of eleven year old Mikelle Biggs who vanished in Mesa on January 2, 1999. Shortly after Mikelle’s disappearance, LaMoure contacted Kym Pasqualini, founder of the missing person agency and offered to place a larger than life photograph of Mikelle on the hood of his car during a race at Phoenix International Raceway.

Since 1999, LaMoure has enlisted the help of other NASCAR drivers and has profiled over 200 missing adults and children at NASCAR races throughout the country. Over the years LaMoure has featured even high profile cases like Chandra Levy and Laci Peterson.

During the Konica Minolta 125, LaMoure will be driving Car #94 with a full hood photograph of Randy Charles Spring, who mysteriously vanished while hitchhiking on October 10, 1988 from White Water, CA. Randy Spring’s family will be traveling from California to attend the race.

In addition, another Racing for the Missing driver, M.K Kanke, also competing in the Konica Minolta 125, will be driving Car #33 with a full hood photograph of George Milan who vanished on April 19, 2004, from Oilve Branch, MS.

A local missing child’s family especially affected by LaMoure’s retirement is the Florez family. Jesse Florez vanished at the age of fourteen, September 14, 2001 from the vicinity of 55th Avenue and Indian School Rd., in Phoenix.

LaMoure initially met the Florez family in 2003 when he profiled Jesse on the hood of his car. Veronica Abeyta, Jesse’s older sister and her husband, Manny have become close friends with LaMoure. After meeting LaMoure Manny Abeyta became a member of LaMoure’s pit crew. Veronica and her mother will be in the stands during the last race of LaMoure’s career.

Currently, Jesse Forez is included in a national effort to raise awareness for missing persons who have received little media attention. Joe Mammana, a Philadelphia businessman and victim’s rights advocate has offered $2 million in rewards for 20 missing persons.

A $100,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of Jesse and/or information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for his disappearance is available until November 24, 2006.

LaMoure intends to continue working with families of missing persons and expand the Racing for the Missing program.

“LaMoure will be missed on the track but we look forward to continuing to work with him,†said Kym Pasqualini. “Darrell LaMoure has made such an astounding impact in the lives of families of missing persons and those of us who are fortunate enough to work with him. At a time of such loss and trauma in the lives of families of missing persons, Darrell gives them Hope when everything seems lost.â€ÂÂ

$100,000 reward offered in case of missing teen

$100,000 reward offered in case of missing teen

Nov. 20, 2006 03:26 PM

A Philadelphia businessman is offering $100,000 for information leading to the return of a Phoenix teenager who disappeared five years ago. Jesse Gabriel Florez, then 14, vanished on Sept. 14, 2001 while walking to a friend's house near 52nd Avenue and Indian School Road.

"He just disappeared," said Veronica Abeyta, the missing boy's sister who lives in Maricopa. "He was going to a party on a Thursday night. It was just within walking distance, but he never returned."

Joe Mammana, who according to published news reports is manager of an egg-processing company, is putting up $100,000 rewards for tips that lead to the return of 20 missing persons cases nationwide. The tips must result in the recovery of the missing people, or the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the disappearances. The offer expires on Nov. 24. Mammana did not return calls for comment.

When he disappeared, Gabriel Florez had a piercing in the lower left lobe of his right ear, and a piercing in the cartilage of his upper right ear, according to a flier from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

He had a black dot in the corner of his right eye. His nickname is Lil' Droop.

Anyone with tips should call Phoenix Police Department at (602) 261-8042; after-hours: (602) 262-6141.

From the family:

As many of you, the anniversary of when my little brother, Jesse G. Florez, went missing approaches. It will be 7 years on Sept. 14, 2001 when he last turned to  us and said he would be back in a bit then never came home...

As the day approaches, my heart becomes more heavy, but I hold on to hope...hope with so many different meanings... and to me, hope is to believe in the impossible! A good friend recently reminded me how we all have a purpose and that my brother has a purpose too even though he may not be here for me to see, but only God knows and in time he will let me in on it... so, I will patiently wait until he is ready to tell me.

I am reaching out to all of you today to ask you to join me this weekend on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 in a small moment of prayer or silence (whichever you prefer)... there is no specific time, just the positive energy of one accord on that day. Pray your own prayer and send good thoughts our way as we all know that anything is possible through prayer and belief... although we may not understand why things happen the way they do, all we can do is prayand I pray for my brother to be safe in the hands of God and in due time, my questions will be answered.

I appreciate everyone of you! Thank you so much for all your support, it means so much to me!!!

Valley mom still hopes for missing son's return

Navideh Forghani

11:24 PM, May 24, 2015

PHOENIX - Monday is National Missing Children’s Day and a Valley mother wants people to know of the nightmare she’s been living for the last 14 years.

Angie Alvarado’s son Jesse Florez went missing in September of 2001.

“I feel like something has happened to him and I’m still searching for answers,” Alvarado said.

Jesse was last seen leaving his home near 51st Avenue and Indian School Road.

He was heading to a party with friends. But he never came home.

“I can feel his presence and I won’t give up hope,” said Alvarado. “Every year that goes by and when he turned 18, I thought, ‘well he is old enough to come home.’ But he never showed up.”

She is hoping anyone with information will come forward so she can finally find some peace.

Anyone with tips should call Phoenix Police Department at (602) 261-8042; after-hours: (602) 262-6141.
