Perinton mother still missing six years later
Sunday marks six years since a Perinton mother of three disappeared.
Police still do not know what happened to Sharon Shechter. She was last seen December 9, 2001.
Schechter was Christmas shopping at the Ames store in Macedon. Shechter told her mother she planned to pick up her kids at their father's house that night, but she never showed up. Her minivan with bloodstains inside was found three days later at the Days Hotel in Gates.
We spoke with Shechters mother, Sandra Poole, on Sunday.
I know she's probably dead but we need closure. The family needs closure. Somebody out there knows something and we need to find out what happened to her, said Poole.
Shechter's three children are now 11, 13 and 15 years old.
If you have any information on her disappearance, call 911. You can also call the Monroe County Sheriff's office at 585-753-4900.

Perinton, N.Y. — .When Perinton resident Sharon Shechter disappeared, family and friends hung and handed out fliers and posters.
Shechter’s mother, Sandra Poole, walked her daughter’s neighborhood, talked with neighbors, called the media and offered a $5,000 cash reward for any information regarding her daughter’s disappearance.
She even got Nancy Grace, a reporter who seeks justice for crime victims on CNN Headline News, to do a segment on the case.
“I did everything I could. There is nothing else I can do,” Poole said. “We are just waiting. That’s all we can do.”
Shechter went missing Dec. 6, 2002. Nearly five years later, the investigation is still open and ongoing.
Police found Shechter’s van Dec. 12, 2002, at the Days Inn Hotel on Chili Avenue in Gates with a “substantial amount of blood” identified as Shechter’s, said Paul Siena, the major crime unit investigator for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
To date, no body has been found and no key witness has stepped forward. The van is the only piece of evidence police have found since her disappearance.
Shechter was last seen Dec. 9 turning on Christmas lights on her front porch at her home on Nettle Creek Road. She spoke to her mother at noon, saying she and a friend were going to shop at Ames and that she needed to pick up her children from her estranged husband, Alan Shechter, in Chili at 5:30 p.m.
“I had called a couple of times that day to the house (after 5:30 p.m.), I didn’t get a return call, and I just thought maybe she wasn’t home yet, maybe she’s busy with the kids and I just kind of let it go,” Poole said.
But on Monday, Shechter didn’t show up for work and her co-workers contacted the sheriff’s office and had them investigate at Shechter’s home.
Shechter’s three children, who were 5, 7, and 9 at the time, had been taken to school by their father, Poole said.
Shechter was in the middle of getting a divorce from Alan Shechter when she disappeared. The divorce was described by several neighbors and acquaintances at the time as having “some turmoil,” and he had been charged with criminal contempt after allegedly violating an order of protection in October 2000 when he reportedly grabbed Shechter in her home. That charge was dismissed, provided that he has no further contact with the justice system.
Siena said when Shechter first went missing the police treated it as a missing-person case. Road patrol officers were advised to keep a lookout, and information about Shechter and her disappearance was entered into a national law enforcement database. The case changed once her van was found.
“It became a potential crime instead of just someone who had gone missing,” Siena said.
At that point, he said, the police used every resource available to to find clues, including search and rescue squads and volunteers.
“I can’t tell you how many searches we did ... tireless, tireless hours of investigating the background of Sharon and interviewing everyone involved in her life,” he said.
Poole agreed that the investigation proceeded vigorously.
Back then she said detectives would call daily, sometimes on the speaker phone with three or four of them.
Calls now come in once a month or so, she said.
“In the beginning every time they would find a body they would call me. Now they don’t, but I know it’s still a priority on their desk,” Poole said. “There is not a lot anyone can do at this point.”
Siena agrees the investigation is at a standstill.
“Leads trickle in and pretty much we respond to any leads we can, but we have run out of every lead. To date we haven’t anything to lead to an arrest or solving the mystery,” he said. There is not a lot of proactive things we can do that would be viable at this stage.”
Siena said he calls every couple of weeks just to check in with Poole.
“It’s definitely a difficult situation for the sheriff’s department and more specifically for Sharon’s family. I talk with Sandy every couple of weeks, just to talk, and let her know that we are still here and we aren’t going anywhere,” Siena said. “We firmly believe a case that goes unsolved is a phone call away, and that’s how we treat it now.”
In the meantime, Poole waits.
“It’s been real hard,” she said. “We want closure. At least it would put us at peace.”

Sharon Shechter missing for 10 long years
12:59 AM, Dec. 8, 2011
Sandra Poole doesn't expect to see her daughter Sharon Shechter alive ever again. But Poole, of Fairport, is determined to keep her still-missing daughter's name and photo in the public eye as long as she can.
"Somebody knows something," Poole says, as she has said again and again over the years. Shechter disappeared 10 years ago Friday. She was divorced, had three children (Jake, Amber and Rachel), lived in Perinton and worked as an ultrasound technician for Ide Radiation. A few days after her disappearance, her 1992 minivan, blood stained, was found in Gates.
And after all this time, that's all there is.
To Sandy Poole, it's pretty simple. Somebody killed her daughter. "She would never have left her kids," she says. And she wants answers.
"I wear this pin every day," Poole says, pointing to a 4-inch button on the front of her sweater — a button with Shechter's picture on it. "And every day somebody says something — like, 'Oh, I remember her.'"
To prepare for the 10th anniversary of Shechter's disappearance, Poole went to Staples to have a few hundred more business cards printed — cards with her daughter's photo and a request to call the Monroe County Sheriff's Department with information at (585) 753-4723. The manager at Staples kindly printed her some fliers with the same photo and information, fliers she'll post around town. "That's all I can do," she says.
Poole doesn't keep much in her small apartment, which belonged to her daughter. She has a few photos on the wall, but she gave Shechter's wedding dress and other possession to her daughters — so they will have some connection to their missing mom.
Poole has a copy of a cookbook filled with the recipes that her grandmother, Anna "Bobbie" Jaciw Kolmetz, brought with her from Ukraine when she moved to the United States. Shechter edited the collection, Bobbie's Kitchen, in 1996.
And she has memories. Of the year Sharon was Miss Pre-teen Rochester, of her daughter's junior prom at Gates-Chili High School. She still laughs at her memory of a trip she and Sharon took to Hungary when she was just a child. When they returned and Sharon was asked about food, she couldn't stop talking about the "walking chicken" — the headless bird still running around the yard before it was plucked.

Sunday was the 11th Anniversary of Sharon Shechter's disappearance. It's a mysterious case that's left her family without closure and they're hoping you can help bring her home.
"She was always smiling and fun loving. She was such a good girl. This shouldn't have happened to her," says Schechter's mother Sandra Poole.
December 9th, 2001 was the last time anyone saw 35-year-old Sharon Shechter. Her mother remembers it all too clearly.
"Every day it hurts. I think about her everyday," Poole says. She states that her daughter was last seen near her home in Perinton. She believes something happened to Shechter while driving to pick up her kids from her ex-husband.
"I think somebody got her between her house and there... what else could have happened?"
When Shechter didn't show up for work that Monday, her co-workers notified police. Three days later police found Shechter's mini-van parked at the Days Inn hotel in Gates, with blood on the inside.
For years, detectives and family members passed out flyers. Now more than a decade later, Poole doesn't believe her daughter is alive but she's not giving up hope.
"I don't think so, because I'm sure she would have tried to get in touch with me," she states. "I'm just going to sit and wait. What else can I do?"
Poole never leaves her phone, in case she gets that one call about Shechter she's been waiting for.
"If we had closure, it would be a lot better... I lover her and I miss her, her kids miss her and the family misses her."
Eleven years later Poole is still looking for answers, and sending other parents this message:
"Treasure every moment they have with their children, because you never know what's going to happen."
Poole says investigators haven't talked with her about the case in several years. If you have any information for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office they ask that you call 911.

Tuesday marks 13 years since Perinton woman went missing

Tuesday marks 13 years since a mother in Perinton disappeared. Sharon Shechter was last seen outside her house in 2001.
It's really a heartbreaking story and the fact that Christmas is right around the corner makes this anniversary even more difficult. But even though so much time has passed, investigators say they are still actively investigating this as a missing persons homicide case.
Shechter's mother Sandy Poole says, "13 years for all this."
It's been 13 years since Sandy Poole's only child went missing and not a day goes by that she doesn't think about her.
"The last time I saw her was at the Christmas party," says Poole. "She had a Christmas party the Saturday night before."
After all this time, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is still investigating what happened to Shechter. At the time of his disappearance, she was going through a divorce. She went missing on December 9, 2001 and her minivan was found days later outside a Gates motel with blood inside.
Captain Michael Fowler, of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, says, "There was some blood evidence inside the vehicle that was tested by the lab. It did come back to be Sharon Shechter."
Captain Fowler says this started out as a missing persons case in 2001, but a few years later was determined to be a homicide investigation. We spoke with him about the latest developments.
We asked investigators if there were any new developments in the case. Captain Fowler says, "We do continue to develop some information."
We asked investigators about Shechter's husband and if they'd been able to speak with him.
Captain Fowler says, "The husband at the time, Alan Shechter, retained an attorney. So over the past course of these 13 years we've been unable to speak with him."
Despite that he says they continue to look for new information.
"There's a considerable part of the extended family that's been very cooperative," says Captain Fowler. "Sharon's side has been cooperative and we continue to speak with them, even as recent as this year."
Sandy Poole is just hoping for some closure.
"I just want them to know that she's still missing and if they know anything to please come forward," says Poole. "That's the best I can say. Somebody's got to know something out there."
Police say if you have any information, please call 911.
