Family holds out hope for man missing 7 years

It all started with a late-night phone call, leaving a family to wonder what happened for seven years.

Jolene Oney has been waiting that long to find out what happened to her brother, Frederick "Little Joe" Boehm, who disappeared Jan. 25, 2001, after taking a phone call around 11 p.m.

He has not been seen since that time, nor has the family has heard from him.

"I hope and pray that he just fell and busted his head and woke up not knowing who he is," said Ms. Oney. "But, you know deep down, reality sets in..."

On the night he disappeared, Boehm received a call after which he dressed in jeans, boots and a camouflage jacket and left the home in which he was staying, according to his sister.

He told his best friend's girlfriend, who was sitting on the porch smoking to not wait up for him, that he would catch them in the morning.

"He never did," she said.

Boehm was staying in Marshall because his truck was broken down and he had no other way to get to work. He had planned to take care of his friend's dog while they went out of town.

"This all happened on a Thursday, they were to leave Friday. Little Joe was to watch the dog but he wasn't there. He never called. It's not like Little Joe to just take off," she said.

The phone call is the key, Ms. Oney believes. "Somebody has to know something. Whoever made that phone call knows at least where he went," she said.

"We've heard all kinds of crazy stories. The police have talked to different people and this and that and nothing for seven years. We're just hitting a dead end," said Ms. Oney.

The case was investigated by Marshall Police officer Doyle Kuhn, who became the lead investigator and has since retired. "He keeps in touch with me," she said.

The case is now being worked on by Lt. Patrick Clayton, who is asking that anyone with information call him at 903-935-4546.

Boehm is 6 feet tall with hazel eyes and weighed 135 pounds at the time of his disappearance.

MPD has six open missing person cases

Posted: Friday, January 28, 2011 3:35 am | Updated: 3:38 am, Fri Jan 28, 2011.
Terri Richardson

There are six active missing person cases, considered open investigations by the Marshall Police Department, as detectives have conducted years of follow-up attempts to bring them home or provide closure to their families, according to a press release.

“Investigators have collected DNA samples, which are submitted to the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, from the closest family members of each individual missing,” Lt. Patrick Clayton said in the release. “These DNA submissions are entered into a nationwide database used for comparison purposes with unidentified bodies and skeletal remains throughout the country.”

The following investigations are ongoing by the MPD Criminal Investigations Division and are listed in the order of disappearance:

Teresa Lanette Barnett

Teresa Lanette Barnett was 30 when she was last seen on Aug. 7, 1987, in the 200 block of East End Boulevard North at the old Eckerd Drug store. That day, her husband Wayne Barnett, let her out about 10:30 a.m. that morning to shop and left the vehicle at the store for her, according to her husband. When she did not return home, he went to the store and found the vehicle was still parked in the same place. Ms. Barnett’s purse was found a few days later at South Washington Avenue and Lakeview Drive.

Danny Joe Riley

Danny Joe Riley was 43 at the time of his disappearance from Marshall in August 1992. His family did not notify the Marshall Police Department of his disappearance until 1999, when his relatives stated Riley had not been in contact with them since 1992. No other information regarding Riley’s disappearance was available.

Casey Gene Morgan

Casey Gene Morgan was 39 when he disappeared about 4:30 a.m., Aug. 8, 1997, from the Waffle House where he worked. Morgan was last seen by co-workers when he left the restaurant, and his vehicle was later located in a wooded area on some former family land, sold prior to the disappearance, in Marion County. Authorities  searched the area where the vehicle was found, but Morgan was not found.

Lakiesha Trenail Buckner

Lakiesha Trenail Buckner was 16 when she disappeared Aug. 14, 1999, from her East Fannin Street residence in Marshall. Initially suspected to be a runaway juvenile, she never returned home, and her family members never heard from her after she disappeared. Numerous publications have been distributed through the Center for Missing and Exploited Children throughout the country along with age progression images.

Fredrick Joseph Boehm

Fredrick Joseph Boehm was 23 when he disappeared on Jan. 25, 2001, from a residence in the 3000 block of Victory Drive. Known as “Little Joe,” he left walking in the late evening hours west on Victory Drive and has not been seen since. MPD  efforts have included follow-up interviews with  family and friends, and a search of an abandoned water well  by  a diving expert from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Beverly Lofton Meadows

Beverly Lofton Meadows was 48 when she was last seen Dec. 26, 2008, from the 200 block of West Merritt Street. She was a resident of Community Care Nursing Home and was last seen at 6 p.m. at the facility. Ms. Meadows removed her ID bracelet, which activates door alarms, and left on foot. Investigators have issued several press releases with photographs  to businesses and the media in hopes of finding her, and nearby creeks and abandoned properties in the city have been searched. There was never a documented sighting of Ms. Meadows after that day.

Before living at the nursing home, Ms. Meadows lived at 723 Marcella Lane off Farm-to-Market 31 in the Elysian Fields area and was dependent on numerous medications she did not have access to before leaving. Her mother lives in Shreveport, La., and her family once lived in the Florien, La., area.

Anyone with information on these cases is urged to contact the Marshall Police Department Criminal Investigation Division at 903-935-4540. Anonymous calls may be directed to the Marshall/Harrison County Crimestoppers hotline at 903-935-9969.

Sister seeks answers after Marshall man missing 14 years

By Naomi Prioleau

Jan. 22, 2015 at 10 p.m.

Sunday marks 14 years without answers for Jolene Oney.

In 2001, her brother, Frederick Joseph "Little Joe" Boehm, disappeared while walking down Victory Drive at night.

Since then, Oney hasn't received any substantial information or leads as to what happened to him.

"I never thought it would be this long, and you know that saying people always say, 'I never thought it would happen to me,'" she said.

Boehm was 23 when he disappeared. He was dressed and ready for bed when he received a phone call around 11 p.m. or midnight that drew him out of the house he shared with roommate Coley Briggs and his girlfriend.

"He got the phone call, got in his boots and jeans and that grey shirt and camo jacket and took off walking coming towards town from Victory (Drive) and just disappeared into thin air. After that, no one wants to say what happened," Oney said.

Oney said she doesn't care about the details of what happened that night, she just wants to bury her brother's remains with their parents.

"I don't care who did something, if it was bodily harm, I don't care about that because God has their number. I just need Little Joe," she said. "I need his remains so I can put him with Mama and Daddy."

Described as quiet, kindhearted and reliable, Boehm never got to see his nephew, Kenneth, grow up and get married.

Oney said she's accepted the fact that her brother is most likely dead.

"I know he's probably gone, but I just need to close it," she said. "Every time I see a homeless person or if someone's by the road, I break my neck to see if it's him, but in all reality, I know he's probably gone.

"I want Little Joe so I can put him to rest.."

Anyone with any information should call Lt. Patrick Clayton with the Marshall Police Department at (903) 935-4546 or leave an anonymous tip with Crimestoppers at (903) 935-9969.
