Sedan of missing woman found at bottom of Hakalau cliff

October 11, 2008 - Hawaii County Police press release - Hakalau, Hawaii

Marlo4.jpgMarlo3.jpgMarlo2.jpg

On Friday (October 10) Hawaii County police, acting on a tip from a local Fisherman, located a four-door sedan with extensive damage at the bottom of a 120-foot cliff in Hakalau on the Hilo side of the old mill site.

Fire Rescue personnel rappelled down the cliff, but due to hazardous wave conditions in the area, could not locate anyone in the vehicle. Police suspected that the vehicle might be a blue 1995 Chevy Corsica 4-door sedan last operated by Marlo Moku, who was reported missing on September 23.

A check was done of the immediate area around the site using a Fire Department helicopter but no one could be located. Detectives also combed the area for further evidence using the Police Department's scent discriminating canine trained in both live person and cadaver scent capabilities. On Saturday, (October 11) using a Huey Helicopter owned by a Maui company, the car was recovered from its location at the bottom of the cliff. It was hauled to the top of the cliff for inspection by detectives. Fire rescue personnel used cutting tools to access the trunk and passenger compartment.

No one was found in the vehicle. A check on the Vehicle Identification Number revealed the registered owner to be Marlo K. Moku.

The vehicle was towed back to the Hilo police station for further evidence processing.

Moku remains missing. Police are continuing their investigation into her disappearance.

Moku suffers from a medical condition that requires periodic medication.

Police ask that anyone with information on her whereabouts call Detective Norbert Serrao (808)961-2383 or (808)935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.

Wreckage Provides Little Evidence In Search

Police on the Big Island of Hawaii are looking for a woman whose car was found at the bottom of a 120-foot cliff on Oct. 10, 2008. The car's registered owner, Marlo K. Moku, 33, has been missing since Sept. 23.

Cops say Marlo was last seen at a 7-Eleven store in her hometown of Hilo two weeks before the discovery of her car.  According to detectives, her credit cards have not been used since she went missing.

Police say the wreckage of Marlo's blue 1995 Chevy Corsica was first spotted from the water by a local fisherman. The vehicle needed to be airlifted out of the ravine by helicopter for inspection.

Detectives tell AMW that they used Luminol in the car to see if anyone had been inside at the time of the crash. Tests showed no evidence of bodily fluids.

Marlo, a mother of three, is of partial Hawaiian descent. She's 5'7", 180 lbs., has brown eyes and shoulder-length dark brown curly hair, occasionally worn in a ponytail.

Marlo has a mole on her upper left cheek and one on her lower right cheek. She has the word "Sassy" tattooed in pink letters on the inside of one of her ankles and two horizontal scars on one of her outer arms.

Cops say there are few clues as to the cause of her disappearance.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Marlo K. Moku, please call our hotline at 1-800-CRIME-TV.

Missing woman's car found at bottom of cliff

By Star-Bulletin staff

POSTED: 02:30 a.m. HST, Oct 12, 2008

A car belonging to a missing 33-year-old Hilo woman was found at the bottom of a 120-foot cliff in Hakalau, Big Island police said yesterday.

A tip from a local fisherman led authorities to the area Friday, but, facing hazardous waves, they could not locate anyone near the heavily damaged blue 1995 Chevy Corsica sedan. The car was identified as belonging to Marlo K. Moku.

Yesterday, a Maui helicopter hauled the car to the top of the cliff, and firefighters cut open the trunk and passenger compartment, but did not find anyone inside. Police took the vehicle back to the Hilo police station for processing.

Moku was last seen at a convenience store in the lower Kaumana Drive area on Sept. 23 at about 7 p.m. She was driving her Corsica sedan and wearing shorts and a pink tank top.

Moku remains missing, and police are continuing their investigation into her disappearance.

She is 5 feet 7 inches tall, about 180 pounds, with brown eyes and shoulder-length, dark brown, curly hair that she wears in a ponytail.

She has a pink "Sassy" tattoo on the inside of her ankle and two vertical scars on the outside of one of her arms.

Police said she suffers from a medical condition that requires periodic medication.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call Detective Norbert Serrao at (808) 961-2383 or (808) 935-3311 or call CrimeStoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona.

Family seeks public's help

By John Burnett
Tribune-Herald Staff Writer

Published: Friday, May 8, 2009 10:05 AM HST

Marlo Moku has not been seen since September.

Family members of a Hilo woman missing since Sept. 23 are hopeful she's still alive and that someone has information that will lead them to her.

Sarah Moku said the family will set up a tent Saturday at Four-Mile Beach in Keaukaha. The purpose is to talk story with beachgoers and hand out fliers with a picture of Marlo Moku, who left her Kaumana home to buy cigarettes and failed to return.

"We'll try to go there early," said Sarah Moku, a Maui resident who is Marlo Moku's younger sister. "The kids can swim and we want to put up a big vinyl sign with her picture that says, 'Please help us find our mommy.'"

Marlo Moku, 34, is the mother of three children: Jacob, 11; Kanoe, 9, and Lily, 3. Her boyfriend, Sean Oblero, has been taking care of the children since her disappearance. In addition, Moku has three other siblings, sisters Iwa and Kawehi, and half-brother Joshua. Her parents are Wayne Moku and Darolyn Kua, both of Hilo.

She was last seen at about 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Kaumana Drive 7-Eleven store.

The missing woman was not employed and, according to her sister, was on medication for bipolar disorder.

"She needs help because she hasn't had her shot and it's been seven months," Sarah Moku said. She added that her sister was originally treated with pills, which she would sometimes forget to take.

"If she wasn't consistent in taking her pills, she would fall back into her sickness and we would have to take her to the hospital, because it got so bad that they would have to stabilize her," Sarah Moku said. "But recently, in the last two years, they started her on a shot. She had to go to the doctor's every two weeks, I believe, and not have to remember to take the pills. The shot would keep her very consistent."

Marlo Moku's blue 1995 Chevrolet Corsica four-door sedan was found by a fisherman at the bottom of a 120-foot cliff near the old Hakalau Sugar Mill the morning of Oct. 10. The license plates, reported by police as HTN 328, were missing from the car. Police identified the car as Moku's through its vehicle identification number.

The car was lifted to the top of the cliff the following day by helicopter and was towed back to Hilo police headquarters for further investigation.

"We had a reconstructionist go through the path the vehicle traveled," police Lt. Mitch Kanehailua of the Criminal Investigation Section said Thursday. "We have to go through the report now; it's rather lengthy. Other than that, there's no new information."

Asked if he suspected foul play, Kanehailua said: "Not at this time. We really don't know; we're looking at all the possibilities.

"We've had reports of sightings, but we've checked them out and really, nothing."

Kanehailua said that Maui police have tentatively identified a body there that Moku's family had requested Hilo police check, but the body was not Moku's.

Sarah Moku said she doesn't think her sister was suicidal, even when not medicated.

"She'd just blab on about things that went on in the past, things that are bottled up inside and just all come out at once. Her frustrations and that," she said.

She said that her sister had never disappeared for any length of time before.

"She goes to town a lot with the kids, knick-knack shopping here and there, but it was not like she'd never come home," Sarah Moku said. "She'd go to the store to get some cigarettes, get this, get that, but she'd always come back. She liked to go to the beach. She'd go to Honolii because her boyfriend surfs there."

She said that the family is dissatisfied with the police investigation.

"They told us from the beginning it's not a crime to be missing if you're an adult, and we felt that they kind of classified her as a runaway, because they didn't make any effort to find her the first couple of weeks," Sarah Moku said. "Then, when her car was found about two weeks after, that's when they stepped it up a little."

She said police found some belongings of Moku's near the wreckage, but told her that analysis of the items could take a year.

Asked how Moku's children are handling their mom's absence, Sarah Moku said, "It was hard on them, at least at first. We're trying to be strong for them."

Marlo Moku is described as part-Hawaiian, approximately 5-foot-7, about 180 pounds, with brown eyes and curly, shoulder-length dark brown hair, occasionally worn in a ponytail. She was last seen wearing shorts and a pink tank top.

She has moles on her upper left cheek and lower right cheek, the word "Sassy" tattooed in pink letters on the inside of one of her ankles, and two vertical scars on the outer side of one arm.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Norbert Serrao at 961-2383 or the police nonemergency line at 935-3311. Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

Hilo police hope new technology, leads will help find missing mother

Posted: Feb 21, 2014 1:39 AM EST

Updated: Feb 22, 2014 4:36 AM EST

By Lynn Kawano

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - "We wonder so much about where she is, what could have happened," says Kawehi Moku.  Her older sister, Marlo Moku disappeared more than five years ago.

Kawehi last spoke to her sister on the phone on September 23rd, 2008.  Kawehi says Marlo seemed fine.  But when she didn't pick up her kids from school later that day, the family knew something was wrong.

Marlo Moku may have gone to the 7-11 on Kaumana Drive but police are unclear what happened after that.

Some have wondered if the 33-year old just ... left ... but her family says there's no way she would have abandoned her kids.

"She wouldn't have left the three of them behind, something bad must have happened to her," says her sister, "(She was) a loving mom, she always had the three of them with her."

"It is unusual for a parent, a mom, to leave behind her kids," says Lieutenant Gregory Esteban of the Hawaii Police Department's Criminal Investigations Unit.

The kids were 10, 8 and 2 years old when Marlo vanished.

Weeks later, her Chevy Corsica was found at the bottom of a cliff in Hakalau.  For Kawehi, that was proof that her sister was a victim.

"Somebody's trying to hide something.  The car was dumped, the license plates were ripped off, none of her belongings (was) in it," she says.

"That was her main mode of transportation," says Lt. Esteban.  "The unfortunate part, the vehicle was exposed to the elements, the salt water."

Hilo Police are planning on re-testing the evidence collected to see if new technology can bring new leads.  But the key to solving most cold cases, time.

"As time goes by, relationships change," says Lt. Esteban, who hopes that a witness who wouldn't or couldn't cooperate back then might be willing to now.

Marlo Moku's three kids are living with family members.

"They miss her a lot," says Kawehi,  "At times I just want to break down and cry, but when I look at them... I'm the one they look up to now so I have to be strong for them."

Kawehi Moku runs a facebook page about the case https://www.facebook...lo.moku?fref=ts

If you have any information that can help, call Hilo Police at 808-961-8300.  The department now has a detective dedicated to reviewing cold cases.
