Tina Pitts' family still searching for answers

Last Update: 11/11/2008 9:43 am
Missing woman's family searching for answers

Two years after a Tulsa woman went missing, her family has given up hope she is still alive.

Tina Pitts, who also went by the name Selwayne Richardson, was last seen alive in the company of her boyfriend at her East Tulsa apartment complex in November of 2006.

Angie Pitts believes her sister was murdered. She tells 2NEWS she will never give up looking for Tina's body, and her killer.

"I'll never stop. So whomever is responsible for this, they've got to fear people like me. Because I am your enemy."

Police believe the case can be solved, even though Pitts' body has not been found. Corporal Gene Watkins believes investigators' best chance for cracking the case is for someone to come forward with information. "They've talked with somebody. Somebody knows the story. We're just hoping each time we run these stories that somebody comes through and listens and says it's time I do the right thing."

Anyone with information about Tina Pitts' body or her killer can call Crime Stoppers at 596-COPS.

Any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case could lead to a cash reward by the Crime Commission.

Reward increased for information about missing woman

Last Update: 6:40 am March 31, 2009

There is renewed hope for the family of Tulsa woman who has been missing for almost three years.

Last Thursday, 2NEWS introduced you to 77-year-old Edna Pitts, whose daughter Tina Pitts has been missing November of 2006. Everyday she gets up at 4 a.m. to bake cakes, pies and other treats to sell to people in her community, in order to raise money for the reward fund for information in her daughter's case. Since she began her efforts in November, Edna has raised over $700.

When her story aired on 2NEWS, a good samaritan was watching. Adel Nasreddine owns Israel Diamond Supply. Monday, he donated $5,000 in reward money to Edna's cause.

Nasreddine told 2NEWS, "This is going to going to be for the person who is going to give us information on finding Tina or finding whoever did anything to Tina."

He hopes the money will be enough to encourage someone to do the right thing, and come forward with information that will lead to Tina Pitts' body and bring her killer to justice.

"Hopefully other people will be motivated to action too. Because all of this means nothing if we don't find Tina", says Nasreddine.

It's a gesture that overwhelms Edna Pitts.

"All I can say is thank you and try to hold back the tears," she said.

Homicide Unit Supervisor Sergeant Mike Huff hopes the money will help break the case wide open.

"This is a significant amount of money. People on the street take notice of that. Money does encourage people to talk and I hope that is the the case here," Huff said.

Edna Pitts has lost her first husband and a son to homicide. She says Nasreddine's generosity has restored to her hope in humanity.

"This has showed me that there are real people in the word that do care. There are real people. And I appreciate them so much."

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (918) 596-COPS.

If your information leads to an arrest, the reward will paid through the fund set up by Israel Diamond Supply.

Last year Crime Stoppers tips led to arrests in six murder cases.

Video: Survivors are buffeted by hope, anguish

Living the nightmare

Edna Pitts begins most days about 4 a.m., baking cobblers, pies and cinnamon rolls in her kitchen. About 8 a.m., she packs them in her car and drives around, trying to sell the baked goods.

"You'd be surprised. Once I explain why I am out there, hardly anyone turns me down," Pitts said.

While making her sales pitch, Pitts points to the picture in her car window of her daughter, Tina Pitts, who disappeared at age 43 in November 2006.

The money she makes from the baked goods goes to a reward fund that was set up to elicit tips about the case.

"But most of all, I just don't want the attention to die down," Pitts said.

She named one of her most popular sellers "Sweet Tina Rolls."

"It's just a nightmare, but at least doing what I am doing keeps me busy," Pitts said.

Family marks missing girl's birthday, clings to hope

Tina Pitts has been missing for nearly three years, but her family still celebrates her birthday every year.

This year, it falls on Friday, but the family will gather Saturday afternoon for the celebration of Tina Pitts’ 46th birthday, her sister Angie Pitts said.

“It is like a family barbecue, but it is also in honor of all missing people,” she said.

Tina Pitts has been missing since Nov. 5, 2006, and police and family members fear that she has met with foul play. She was last seen at her apartment near 21st Street and Mingo Road, her family said.

Every year on her birthday and again on Nov. 5, the family members gathers to support each other. This Saturday, about 100 people will be at the gathering, Angie Pitts said.

They will have two cakes for her birthday party, which will be at her mother’s house at 46th Street North and Cincinnati Avenue. In the front yard, there is always a large picture of Tina Pitts with information about her disappearance.

At the gathering Saturday, the family will place flowers around the picture and then release balloons, she said.

“We will say a prayer and release the balloons,” Angie Pitts said.

The family welcomes relatives of other missing people to join them, she said.

“It’s way to let people know they are not forgotten,” she said.

Tina Pitts' children work to keep her missing persons case alive

September 25,2009

What should have been a birthday celebration for a Tulsa woman's family, is a day of sadness.

Tina Pitts disappeared almost three years ago. Friday would have been her 45th birthday.

On a day that used to be filled with celebration and laughter, Tina's pitts youngest two children and her 3-year old granddaughter canvassed the East Tulsa neighborhood where she lived when she disappeared.

Her son Demario Richardson says, "I know something good is going to come out this. So we have to just keep the faith and keep pushing. And just let whoever know that we're still out here fighting. We're still trying to find her."

Courtney Richardson is Pitt's youngest child. She tells 2NEWS, "My heart is just hurting and I think about her all day every day. And a day like this is a day I really want to be with my momma."

Courtney says her mother was supposed to babysit her daughter on November 4rd of 2006. But when she got to mother's apartment, she wasn't there. "I knew something was not right. This isn't like my Momma", she says.

Two days later Tina Pitts, who also went by the name Selwyne Richardson was reported missing.

While Courtney was immediately convinced something terrible happened to her mother, her brother Demoario tried to hold out hope that there was another explanation for their mother's disappearance. "We kept telling ourselves, she's ok. She's ok. But when it came to a week and then two weeks and then her birthday. Then came a month. Then what is is really going on?"

Pitt's left behind three children and four grandchildren that she cherished. After three years without any contact from their mother, Courtney and Demario Richardson fear the worst.

"She was like a best friend and nobody even knew. Because regardless of the life she lived or where she was at or what she did, she called her kids.", says Demario.

Courtney believes her family will one day find out what happened to her mother. "I know it's just a matter of time before God shines down his light on me and my brothers and the truth will be revealed."

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 596-COPS.

The owner of Israel Diamond Supply has also put up a $5,000 reward for information in the Tina Pitts investigation.

Families Of The Missing And Murdered Hold Vigil In Tulsa

Nov 20, 2009
Lori Fullbright
The News On 6

TULSA, OK -- Families who have a loved one who's been murdered or is missing share a common bond that no one else can truly understand. It's a group that no one wants to be a part of, but far too many are.

That's why there's an annual vigil to bring those families together and honor their loved ones, and it's scheduled for Saturday in Tulsa.

Each person at the vigil represents a tragedy and a family who is grieving.

Jason Trent's son, Jake, was murdered in May and the case is still unsolved, although the main suspect is also a suspect in two other murders

Edna Pitts' daughter Tina has been missing for three years. She left behind three children and while police found her blood in her boyfriend's truck, there was never enough evidence for an arrest.

And, Sheila Owens' daughter Tricia has been missing for seven years. She had just adopted a little boy and was a foster mother. The last time she talked to anyone, she said her ex-boyfriend was giving her a ride home. She's never been seen or heard from again.

Her mother started the vigil as a way to mark the anniversary of Tricia's disappearance, but, it's now grown into a gathering so others experiencing loss can find comfort.

"I want them to get the sense they are  part of another family now and that's all of us together, and we're here for them - not just one day a year - but anytime they need us," said Sheila Owen, Tricia's mother.

They all wish there was not a need for such a get together in our society, but the sad truth is, the need is greater than ever as more people turn up missing and more are murdered each week.

Even though this will be Jason's first vigil, he encourages others to attend.

Jason Trent, Jake's father: "Come and hear stories of people who have lost loved ones and have survived it," said Jason Trent, Jake's father.

They say banding together not only helps them survive, but, they hope will also someday make a difference.

The seventh annual vigil for missing and murdered loved ones is Saturday, November 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lawnwood Free Will Baptist Church, 4115 West Edison in Tulsa.

Sheila Owen, Jason Trent, Edna Pitts and Pastor Steve Loveless are guest speakers. There will be lots of food and fingerprint kits for children.

The survivors will release balloons with messages of love. Survivors are encouraged to bring photographs of their loved ones and to share memories.

TPD Creates "Missing Persons" Facebook Page

Reported by: Abbie Alford  Last Update: 8:55 am

Think about all the people you have found on Facebook, the old flames and friends you’ve reconnected that you thought you would never hear from again.

With more than 300 reported missing persons cases in Tulsa a year Facebook is a tool that Tulsa Police are now using to find the very people we thought vanished.

The faces, “Lisa Addington she disappeared from her bachelor party," says Detective Margaret Loveall, TPD Missing Persons Unit.

Familes, "this is a parental abduction" says Loveall of the 2000 Cortes disappearance. Marisela Cortes vanished and police believe she took her four-year-old son Matthew too.

There are daughters such as Karen Heim who went missing in 2005, “She went out with friends on [December] 26th and her car was found in Texas on the [December] 27th," says Loveall.

Some have been missing for 20 or 30 years or most recently as last year.

"Missing persons cases are slightly different than a true homicide case where there is a body," Loveall.

However, some people don’t want to be found.

"Sometimes the family just doesn't know where they are or the victim left by choice either because of a family problem or wanting to change their life,” says Loveall.

On Facebook, people can find just about anyone on the social site.

"You can look for anyone on the Internet if you look hard enough, if they are alive. Some people are really good at hiding," says Loveall.

The Tulsa Police Missing Persons Unit created a “TPD Missing Persons” page on Facebook to track down those who have vanished and it’s working.

"I found a man today that I have been looking for about three months who has a Facebook page," says Loveall. "Hopefully he will return my message and say, 'hey this is what is going on I am not really missing.'"

However, in many missing persons cases something bad has happened.

Tina Pitts was a 42-years-old mother who vanished in November 2006. She had three children and now her story and hundreds of others will be on Facebook for 400 million users to see.

"I am going to be more interested in other people's cases like my sister's case and everybody will too. It's called being nosy but everyone is nosy on Facebook," says Pitts’ sister Angie. "I am going to find her and find who took her away."

The TPD Missing Persons page is still in its infant statges, eventually the page will have all of Tulsa’s missing persons cases with a photograph and brief summary of their disappearance posted to the page.

The International Association of Cold Case Investigators, a non-profit organization founded by former veteran of TPD’s Homicide unit, Mike Nance, and current TPD Homicide Sergeant Mike Huff, also have a Facebook page to network with other law enforcement and equivocal death educators. It’s also an avenue to help communication with families of murdered victims.

TULSA, Oklahoma -
Family members of a missing Tulsa woman are trying to keep her memory alive, six years after she disappeared.

Sunday, family and friends of Tina Pitts held a candlelight vigil in east Tulsa.

"It's no joke and it may not happen to your family, but believe me it can. This ain't no joke. You better wake up. Life is short out here," said Tina's sister Angie Pitts.

They said they know she's likely not alive, but they are still hoping for closure.

Tulsa family gains hope

Updated: 5/08 12:51 pm
Published: 5/07 10:52 pm

Passing through 46th and MLK, there are plenty of reminders: street signs, stop lights and a large picture of Tina Pitts.

The portrait sits in the front yard of her family’s house.

"She’s not dead. I'll never say my sister is gone,” said Angie Pitts.

Angie’s sister, her heart, Tina disappeared in November 2006. Since then, Angie has dedicated her life to finding her.

"That was my baby sister,” said Angie.

She last saw Tina on Halloween. Angie says people loved her sister's company.

Tina had a knack for bringing people together, even strangers. People constantly come up and ask about the picture.

Time has faded the picture a bit. Below, there's a flower shrine, honoring Tina.

"I’m going to try everything; I’m not giving up,” said Angie Pitts.

Every now and then her faith waivers, but Tuesday, there was a breakthrough.

"It’s a big victory for me; it’s not a small victory. There's hope," said Angie Pitts.

Three Cleveland women, who were said to be enslaved for a decade, were found. Angie is living through their happiness.

"When you don't have the answer that's hard,” said Officer, Leland Ashley.

Ashley said sadly sometimes police don't have answers when family calls, and that's when hope means everything.

"I talk about my sister on a daily; to anybody, everybody, they might know something."

She carries Tina wherever she goes, even though a tattoo on her right arm. Just like her tattoo, the love she has for her sister is not going anywhere.

Family of a local missing mother finds mysterious letter

Posted: 11:57 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2015

By Sara Whaley

Tina Pitts disappeared from her Tulsa apartment in 2006

This week her family got a mysterious letter about her whereabouts

Now desperate to find the person who delivered it.

A family looking for their missing mother for nearly a decade now said a mysterious letter showed up this week.

The letter has them now more desperate for answers than ever before.

The message was written on a napkin and basically tells the family where to look for the body of Tina Pitts.

Pitts disappeared from her east Tulsa apartment complex in 2006.

Pitts’s three children told FOX23 in an interview that the letter has them frustrated and hopeful all at the same time.

“It makes me feel  angry, it makes me feel sad and at the same time it kind of gives light in my heart,” Courtney Richardson said.

Richardson told FOX23 it’s the best lead they’ve had in almost a decade.

Now they are begging for the person who put the letter on their grandmother’s door to come forward.

“On Memorial Day we want to go to the cemetery, on Mother’s Day we want to go see our mama somewhere. So please just help us find our mama whoever y’all are,” Richardson pleaded.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (918) 596-COPS.
