Keys to Healing: Mind, Body, and Spirit ~  Project Jason Retreat ~ Omaha, NE August 13-15, 2010

The Project Jason Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the 2nd Keys to Healing Retreat will take place on August 13-15, 2010. The retreat is open to family members of missing persons whose cases are listed with law enforcement agencies in North America. The attendee needs to be age 18 or older.
(Be sure to scroll down and watch the video from the 2009 retreat.)

Your well-being is the most important element in what we do: support. The retreat, and all it offers, is the best life training offered anywhere for persons living with the ambiguous loss of a child or adult loved one.

We all know the difficulties we face in this situation. We know the emotions and the frustrations. None of us knows how long this journey will last, so it's important that we do all that we do what we can to keep ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually strong for the day we have our answers. These are the Keys to Healing, the keys to help you face each day without your missing loved one.

Sessions will be conducted by professional instructors, including a licensed counselor, personal trainer, dietician, missing person advocate, massage therapist, and a minister of faith.  Attendees will learn how trauma affects the body, how to address that trauma, and how to recognize and handle emotions such as guilt, fear and anger that come into play. There will also be a session designed to answer the question of "How do I go on?"

We are honored with the return of our 2009 core instructor, Duane Bowers, LPC, the nation's foremost traumatic loss therapist and educator. Among his many services to families dealing with grief is providing support to families of abducted, missing, exploited and murdered children through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and to families of missing persons of any age through Project Jason's Healing Harbor. Bowers is the author of "Guiding Your Family Through Loss and Grief" and "A Child is Missing: Providing Support for Families of Missing Children."

Class descriptions and pricing will be announced at a later date. Pricing will be determined by any grants, corporate or private sponsorships received prior to the opening of registration for the event in 2010. Project Jason's goal is to keep the price as low as possible, with the ultimate goal of being able to offer the retreat at no charge.

The Keys to Healing will again take place at the Swanson Center, a spacious, comfortable, and scenic retreat center near Omaha, NE. The entire center has been booked to ensure the most private and peaceful of experiences for the attendees.

I have been blessed during the eight years since Jason's disappearance to have had a good support system, faith for the journey, and training to gain an understand of what is happening inside me and how to handle a variety of situations as they come along. I have learned to laugh again and experience joy, while at the same time keeping the search for my son active. I could not possibly box up what I learned and send it to you, but I can give it to you in the Keys to Healing retreat.

So, this is my gift to you from me and Project Jason. I hope you'll be able be able to join us.

Keys to Healing 2010 News:

Project Jason Announces Special Recovered Honoree for 2010 Keys to Healing Retreat

Omaha, Nebraska-- September 11, 2009 --Among the many missing loved ones honored at the Project Jason 2009 Keys to Healing Retreat, two were singled out as special honorees, including one missing loved one, and a loved one who was recovered. The Project Jason Keys to Healing Retreat, the first of its kind, is an annual weekend event filled with lectures, discussions and activities designed to help heal the bodies, minds and spirits of those suffering the unique loss of having a loved one who is missing.

As 2009 marked the first retreat, the founders of Project Jason selected their son, Jason, as the honored missing person. Mike Barbierre was the honored recovered person. His family's generosity provided the seed money needed to get the first retreat off the ground.

"We believe if Jason knows what we do in his name, then he is proud of how much we have been able to help other families over the years," said Kelly Jolkowski, President and Founder of Project Jason, "Likewise, Mike Barbierre has every reason to be proud of his family's generous acts. The special honorees will be a tradition of all future Keys to Healing Retreats."

For 2010 and beyond, the special honors will go one missing person and one recovered person whose families have demonstrated kind and generous spirits. They are among those who reach out to others, despite their own pain and tragedy, and set examples of how to face with dignity and grace what is likely the most difficult event in their lives.

One family selected for next year's Keys to Healing Retreat 2010 exhibited selfless assistance to other families while their loved one was missing, and continues to do so since the young man was recovered.

"We are pleased to announce the special recovered honoree for 2010 is the family of Christopher Michael Pierce," said Jolkowski.

Michael, as he is known by his family and friends, disappeared May 18, 2003 from Bossier City , LA. His body was recovered in December, 2007, and the person responsible for his death is in prison.

His grandparents, Judy and Irish Downes, often travel hundreds of miles to assist in ground searches for missing persons, says Jolkowski. They also attend events to support families of missing persons.

"Everyone who has met them remarks on their kind and supportive natures," Jolkowski says. "I know from personal experience that they would never fail to ask about me and Jason's case whenever we spoke. Even in their darkest hours, they would remember others in pain."

Another example: just months after Michael was found, they traveled to a missing persons conference so that Judy could share with families of the missing her heartfelt account of their Michael's disappearance and recovery in the hopes that it would help others know that they, too, can make it through tragic times.

"Within seconds of speaking with Judy and Irish, one feels as if they've known them forever," Jolkowski says. "Judy is so warm and Irish has a great sense of humor, and never fails to extract a chuckle or two from his companions, a much needed release for the families."

"Michael is loved and sorely missed," said Downes. "I strongly believe that he lives on through my testimony. I eagerly anticipate sharing at the Keys to Healing Retreat both his story and how God has turned tragedy into something wonderful. It does not justify his death, but it reveals how God's grace and love can bring joy in trial and suffering. He truly takes ashes and turns them to beauty."

Jolkowski said Downes also offered one of her favorite quotes from the Bible upon accepting the honor:

"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer". (Romans 12: 11-12).

Downes' story, and many more, will be shared at the Keys to Healing Retreat 2010 in Omaha , Nebraska , August 13-15, 2010.  The 2010 honored missing person's family will be selected from among 2010 attendees, and will be announced as the retreat date nears.

June 15, 2009
Dear Project Jason Board Members
RE: Project Jason Keys to Healing Retreat

I would like to first thank you for making available the Keys to Healing Retreat for families of the missing.

June 26, 2007 my entire life changed, my 26 year old son disappeared.  This began a new chapter that altered the path of my life completely.  Through the beginning days of darkness I struggled, and with the instruction from Law Enforcement that they have limited resources and that they would do all they could but that the family must do the rest ringing in my head we began to look to see what other families were doing to find their Missing loved ones.

We knew there had to be others in our position, we just didn’t realize that the numbers were so large, and we weren’t sure how to connect with them to see if anyone could help.  We began to search the Internet and found source s that again altered our path, but for the better.  We found you folks, and submitted our loved one’s information so he could be listed on your site, but then we were invited to look closer at all the different areas that you offer advice, guidance and counseling, and I knew I’d found a site that I’d not only frequently visit, but would also be able to find information to use in our search.

Months ago I began to hear of the possibility of the retreat, and began thinking and making tentative plans to be there.  Once the retreat was a reality and registration began I had some inner reservations about how I would be able to handle opening my emotions to strangers, though we all had our losses in common.  My experiences have also taught me to be very selective as to whom I listen when seeking help, as many bring nothing of value and many times only add to your stress and pain.  Because of my interaction with your website and the help I’ve received from Healing Harbor I knew the quality of what the retreat offered should be high, and I wanted to share with you that it was in fact high, and exceeded my expectations.

I was touched on many different levels during the retreat; first by meeting the Mothers, Fathers, and Siblings of other Missing Persons, and hearing their stories of that first struggle and where it has taken each one during their search, and though each story was different there was an underlying current of emotion that we all shared.  I was encouraged and challenged personally by the courage of each of the families, because the experiences we shared are the most traumatic thing ever to happen to us, and the shock and trauma that it leaves behind is difficult beyond words to work through, much less talk about with other people, yet this Retreat allowed us a safe place to do that.  The role that Duane Bowers had was an integral part of the experience for me and even though I had previous contact with him from Healing Harbor communications, he took that far beyond what I thought I’d be able to experience.  His knowledge balanced with humor and humility from the very moment he joined us brought each of us to a place that we could receive healing.  Healing knowledge can be offered in the most effective methods, but we must be able to receive it or nothing has been gained, and that was not the case at this retreat.  But Duane was only one of many people that you folks had involved in the retreat and each one of the roles was equally as important, and handled with the utmost compassion and care at all times.

Every aspect of the retreat had impact on me personally, and I took away from it tools that will help me over the coming months and years to not only cope, but to move forward with more strength, health and armed with knowledge that not only I can use, but that I can share with others to help in their walk.

You folks truly accomplished ministering to my Mind, Body and Spirit, and I hope to have the opportunity to mark this as an annual event to attend, to join with others to bond through our suffering, learn methods of healing, as well as aid in knowledge for our searches, and walk away stronger because of it.

Sincerely, and with great appreciation for the work that you do,

Christy Davis, Mother of missing Michael Austin Davis

To the Board of Project Jason

When I registered for Keys to Healing, I don’t know what I was anticipating or if I really had any expectations.  The retreat was brought to my attention by my son, who urged me to take advantage of this opportunity:  “Go, Mom, see what you can learn and then share with me as I just can’t get there.”  During the early days after we had become concerned by my daughter’s extended silence, and the delay getting law enforcement engaged I was frantic for something to do, or someone to connect with who could help us.  The only recourses I was finding were located in Australia!  I think I gave up.  Once the police were involved, my son took the lead in pursuing more information.  I was struggling personally, not only with my guilt and fears for my daughter, but also with [personal battles].  The latter two are history, but my daughter is always there.  The few people that I could share with were helpless and sometimes cruel so I just closed up – my son is about the only one I could talk with openly.  Periodically I investigated counseling but always faltered to take that step…”How could counseling bring my daughter back?  And what good would it do to dump all this where there would be no resolution?”  No money for reward or a trip to tramp through the state where she disappeared, I just felt there was no help until the police made some headway – I just got angrier and angrier!

Through the experience of the retreat I had to come to terms with t hat anger and frustration.  Yes “dumping all this” may not resolve her fate but the process certainly was enlightening.  I didn’t realize how destructive my silence and anger were.  Also, the strength of the other families affected me profoundly.  Kelly’s courage and perseverance pulled together a great, productive event that I can only speak about with superlatives.  The facilities and services were perfect!  Duane’s education reinforced what I was experiencing but also provided insight and constructive things I can practice to become a better “me”, even a “me-not-knowing-what-has-become-of-my-daughter”.  Father Hauser also affirmed the “Help me God” perspective that I so wanted to achieve but I kept sliding into “Why God?” context and anger.  Denise’s services for Project Jason are awesome.  I can’t wait to see the media resources and also to get involved in Second Life.  The gift bags, the memorial photos, the vigil.  Everything so thoughtful, so appropriate, so very much appreciated.

In February 2004, my daughter Elsha M. Rivera, missing from Fort Worth Texas, became another victim and one of the thousands who go missing every year in America. Do you realize that every 30 seconds a person goes missing? If you do the math that's 120 per hour alone!  WOW…..we never really see the numbers nor do we ever pay attention unless its one of our own. I myself am guilty of never taking the time too see how we are so victimized in this country that we call the " Land of The Free ". But are we?

Elsha had 4 children ranging from age 8 months to 9 years when she also became a victim of the missing. The years have passed and the now the children are 6, 9, 10, and 14, and they can't figure out why no one has brought their mother home.

As Elsha's mother, I have spent the last 5 years with severe depression, feelings of guilt, endless and long stretches of not sleeping, and even suffering from Alopecia, hair loss caused by stress. You see when you have a missing child, spouse, or loved one of any kind and you have no answers, you feel helpless and all alone.  At least I did!

I took myself away from the entire world and I buried myself in a world where no one could touch or reach me, not even myself, for I became my own worst enemy. I hated everyone, I hated the person(s) responsible for taking my little girl away from me and her children, and I hated the police department for not doing enough. I thought my little girl was the only missing person out there. But most of all, I hated myself each and everyday because I wasn't capable of searching for her financially or mentally.

When Project Jason found me I think I don't even remember.  I slowly corresponded with them. Kelly Jolkowski emailed me from time to time and she consoled me. She spoke of her own missing child, so then I knew of her pain and heartache, but most of all I knew she understood. So, when one day Kelly emailed me about the 1st annual retreat for the families of missing persons being held in Nebraska ! I wasn't able to afford to attend since I was out of work and raising 4 children, plus, I was not even sure if my car would make it! I also wondered what I would do with the children since I didn’t have anyone here in  Missouri to care for them if I did go.

I spoke to the children about it and they told me I should go. Miraculously, a sponsor came forward for me, and care for the children, and all I had to do was get there. Once again, I spoke to the children and they said “Mom, you need to go.” I was even more afraid the day I left for the long drive as I made several excuses as to why I shouldn't go. You see, I didn't know what to expect…..but I was so glad I did because the Keys to Healing Retreat was like being on a cloud for me. It was like the weight of the earth had just been lifted off my shoulders.

I saw others there just like me, others who had been through the same pain, the same loss and the same fears. Other people who knew what to say and how to say it without being afraid to say all the wrong things to those who hadn't felt the loss and pain of a missing loved one. When you loose a loved one by death, you have one sense of pain, but you also have closure. I knew that feeling since I had other children killed, and I met that fear and I was able to lay it to rest, but this was different in a way I could never truly explain.

The conversations, the people, and the gift of what each and everyone of us had to share was like I had awoken from a very long sleep. I felt alive and I could pinch myself and feel it. I even looked in the mirror for the first time in a very longtime and what I saw was a person who wanted to live.  I felt rebirth, a second chance to come back to life after attending the retreat.

I can now communicate with the children, where before I only existed with them we can sit down and eat meals together before I fed them and then locked myself away in my room. We can even pray together when before I was angry at my heavenly Father for allowing me to feel pain and loss, helplessness and guilt. It's been 5 years, soon to be 6 in February 2010, but one day I will find my Elsha, and I honestly believe this in my heart, soul and mind!

So I ask if you read this, please help, and look deep into your heart and soul and remember that this too could happen to you or someone you know.

Kelly and Project Jason Board of Directors…..

I am finally sitting down to write this letter to you.  I waited to write this, as I needed time to process all that took place at the Key’s to Healing Retreat!  I feel as though the Keys to Healing Retreat has had such a major impact on my life and family!  Before the retreat I was going down a negative and destructive path.  I was devastated by the loss and presumed death of my son Clinton!  Because of the retreat, I have started making better choices and my husband and I are working on our marriage instead of being determined to end our marriage!  I felt so alone and afraid…I felt incapable of dealing with the pain and emotion of losing my son!  Because of the retreat, I feel like my family is on the road to healing….although I don’t know when, or even if this traumatic event will end….I know that my husband, daughter, and I will survive and hopefully even thrive!  Thank you Kelly and the Project Jason board for hosting such an amazing and life changing event!  I pray that you will continue to offer this event to families of the missing….it is greatly needed and appreciated!

Class descriptions and pricing below

            Posted Image

Project Jason is excited to announce the core class offerings for the Keys to Healing retreat 2010. These classes form the basis of the information we provide, which is critical to the attendees' well being and healing.

All core classes are taught by Duane Bowers, LPC, the nation's most experienced counselor in respect to emotions experienced by family members of missing persons.

Core Classes for 2010:

Why Do I Feel This Way?

This session will provide a basic understanding of trauma and present how trauma physically changes our brain and body, as well as our chemistry.  The session will go on to demonstrate how these physical changes result in poor physical, emotional and mental health. Attendees will learn strategies for coping with and changing these physical reactions, and techniques to alleviate stress.

Opening Pandora's Box

This session presents the typical emotions that family members of missing persons face. The reasons behind the emotions will be uncovered. Attendees will learn ways to recognize, intervene, and effectively reduce the affect of these emotions. The discussion will also include preparation for the outcome of the attendees’ missing person case, whether the loved one is found alive or deceased.

Affixing Your Oxygen Mask

This session will help attendees understand and recognize that their feelings, given their situation, are normal. Building on the information of the two previous classes, practical exercises to help the attendees adapt to the situation and regain some normalcy in their lives are shared. This session will also cover how relationships with friends and family may be altered after the event.

One for the Road

This session will provide practical advice for applying the skills learned at the retreat to situations that arise that in the attendee's normal environment. Open dialog will ensure the attendees have gained an understanding of the coping skills shared in the previous sessions.

New Optional Classes for 2010:

The Left Behind Child

Assisting children with their special needs when there is a missing loved one is the topic of discussion in this session. Learn how to open up appropriate discussion about the missing person, based upon the child's age, and how to ensure that the child and parental relationships are normalized.

On the Outside Looking In

This small group session is only for attendees in a support position, such as a step-parent or step-sibling. Discussion includes how best to support the family member with the missing loved one while maintaining a healthy relationship.

Additional Services:

Saturday Meditation with Duane

Meditation is not difficult, and has no rules. It does bring relaxation to the body, mind and spirit. This session introduces the basic technique of meditation for those who have heard about the benefits of meditation but never tried it. Seasoned meditators are also welcome.

More optional classes and benefits will be announced at a later date.

Pricing for the Project Jason Keys to Healing 2010 Retrea
t

The pricing is done on a per person per room basis, as that is how we are charged by the retreat center. As the center has a limited number of rooms, we encourage attendees in the same family to share a room if possible so that we can keep the retreat open for as many families as possible. As mentioned, we are paying a $100 per room subsidy to help keep the costs down so more families can attend. The prices are in bold below.

Rates:

1 person in a room  $255.00 - $100.00 Project Jason subsidy= $155.00
2 persons in a room $388.00 - $100.00 Project Jason subsidy= $288.00  ($144 per person)
3 persons in a room $511.00 - $100.00 Project Jason subsidy= $411.00  ($137 per person)
4 persons in a room $590.00 - $100.00 Project Jason subsidy= $490.00  ($123 per person)

If you have more than 5 persons who will be sharing, ask for pricing. The rooms can hold 3 queen size beds, so it is possible to have up to 6 people in a room.

Day Rate: $35.00 per day (no subsidy)
This fee (the Day Rate) covers the retreat classes, snacks, and the noon meal. No transportation is included in this price. This rate would be applicable to persons who are traveling on their own (via automobile) to the retreat, and have their own lodging.

What the Retreat fee covers:
Your retreat fees cover transportation to and from the airport, your room at the retreat center, all classes, talks, related activities, and meals. The retreat center features a free 24 hour hospitality center with a wide variety of snacks and beverages, including coffee, juices, soft drinks, fruit, popcorn, candy, and ice cream, so there is no need to bring money for expensive vending machines.

Planning Arrival/Departure Times

The retreat will begin at approx 3:30-4pm on Friday. If you are flying in, optimal time to arrive would be noon-2pm. This should give you time to get to the center, unpack, and relax or explore the grounds before classes begin. The retreat will end on Sunday at approx 1:30pm, so book your return flight home at 3:30pm or after, if possible. We provide transportation from the airport to the retreat center and back.

The class listings below are for our optional classes, and will be posted as the class and instructors are confirmed:

Out of Suffering, Joy
Presented by Teresa Monaghen, AO

This is a reflection on the spiritual side of suffering.  It is hard to imagine, but suffering can be the source of immense growth. Having lost a brother in a tragic accident and both parents now lost to dementia, I have experienced great suffering and at the same time a tremendous increase in joy. We will take a sensitive look at the spiritual side of suffering that brings growth and joy.

Teresa Monaghen, AO, is the local and National Moderator of the Pontifical Secular Institute of the Apostolic Oblates and the National Director of the Pro Sanctity Movement and the founder of Camp Fun and Faith for Girls in Elkhorn, NE.  She was born in San Diego, California in 1954 and grew up in Mason City and Clear Lake, Iowa where her parents were born and raised. Teresa holds an STB in Theology from Rome and a MA in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University, Omaha. Teresa has 32 years of experience giving retreats and spiritual direction to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Girl Time
Presented by Christine Danderand

In this unique “Girl Time” class, all interested attendees are invited to come and spend an hour discovering new techniques in makeup artistry. One lucky retreat attendee will get a free makeover from local makeup artist Christine Danderand, who will demonstrate tips and tricks on her while explaining the “how to” for when we’re back home. She will show the participants how to apply makeup for everyday wear in under 10 minutes.  She will also review the best products that she has tested over the years and where to buy them…including the goodies you can find at local drug stores!  Christine will talk about the importance of a good skincare regimen and how it can be the easiest part of a makeup routine. Participants are encouraged to bring their makeup and brushes and apply their own makeup during the class, using the demonstrated tips and tricks.  “Girl Time” is a part of the pampering we provide to retreat attendees.

Christine Danderand with Blush Makeup Artistry

Originally from Vancouver, BC Canada, I come to you with over 14 years of experience in the makeup and beauty industry.  I received my makeup diploma from the prestigious Blance MacDonald School in Canada.  I have been involved with the makeup for independent films, TV/Film productions, magazine photo shoots and fashion shows.  I was a Trainer for MAC Cosmetics for 7 years which allowed me to travel all over the USA and Canada and train the artists that you see today on the counters.  I now run my own business, Blush Makeup Artistry, and focus heavily on wedding makeup.  I have also recently started “Girls Night In” parties where I host 6 women at a time and go over simple makeup techniques and the latest and greatest trends and how to incorporate them into our daily lives.  I live here in La Vista with my husband and 18 month old daughter Emma.

Your Body and Stress
Presented by Mary Glassman, RN

Living with the long term trauma of ambiguous loss will certainly have an effect on the body. In this class, Mary Glassman, RN, will share information about common medical conditions which may manifest themselves as a result of long-term stress, or be exacerbated. These include thyroid and auto-immune issues, menopause, neurological, gastro-intestinal and cardiac problems.  Depression is a common thread in the list of symptoms and often has an origin in one of these medical conditions. Attendees will gain an understanding of how they can dialog with their physician to ensure that the  medical condition, rather than the symptoms, are being treated.  Besides learning to communicate better with their doctor, participants will also learn how to access their own inner healing.

About Mary Glassman, RN:

Mary Glassman is a registered nurse, a licensed clinical social worker and is certified in biofeedback.  She has had a private practice for over 15 years, in which she has specialized in the treatment of anxiety, depression, chronic illness and stress related disorders.  She uses a holistic approach primarily utilizing biofeedback.

Families of Missing Persons Learn Coping Skills

July 5, 2010 | Omaha, Nebraska

iReport —

By Denise Harrison

When a child or adult goes missing, most of us see the headlines and read about the disappearance. We see live action video on TV showing a ground search, or two, or three, with officers in uniform and volunteers fanning out to poke long sticks into rocks and terrain. Sometimes newspaper photographers capture an image of dogs following scents as they lead handlers to places yet unknown. Family members may seek microphones and cameras to plea for safe returns.

When the searches stop and the TV cameras have departed, there is a family left in the wake of the disappearance. Not unlike the aftermath of a hurricane, media move on after showing the immediate crisis while those left behind are just beginning a life altered suddenly and inexorably, where one day was normal and the next will never be normal again.

Family members with missing young or adult children,  siblings whose disappearances are not their nature, and parents who've inexplicably vanished, are forced to live in this new normal for days, weeks, months, sometimes years. They live it in fear, or determination, in heartbreak, numbness, or longing, and often, all of the above. They often learn way more about the law as they pertain to missing persons than they ever cared to know. What they often do not do is learn to take care of themselves.

An upcoming weekend gathering, The Project Jason 2010 Keys to Healing Retreat, is designed to give families of the missing the tools they need to take care of themselves emotionally and physically as they continue their searches. Classes offered during the retreat will cover all aspects of living in the "not knowing," with a focus on mental, spiritual, and physical healing.

“Until now, there were no opportunities for family members of both missing children and adults to focus on the emotional and physical trauma that understandably accompanies such an ordeal,” says Kelly Jolkowski, president and founder of Project Jason and host of the event. After Jolkowski’s son, Jason, disappeared in 2001 at age 19, she started the organization to assist other families of the missing, and has since served hundreds with case assessment and tactical and emotional support. She knew such a retreat would be life changing for many of the attendees.

“We want the families who attend Keys to Healing to walk away with better coping skills, self-understanding and renewed hope,” she says.

One component of the Friday-Sunday retreat is learning the effects of long term trauma on the body and the brain. Understanding trauma, and classes about guilt, fear, and anger—and how these feelings are normal in their new normal-- are taught by renowned therapist Duane Bowers LPC, one of the few therapists in the world specializing in the unique loss families face when they have missing loved ones.          http://www.duanetbowers.com/

“I want people to understand what trauma does to the body and what it does to the brain, physically, and how the neuro-networks are set up,” says Bowers, “because they can control that; they can change that, which will then make them healthier.”

“He understands the missing component,” said one of last year’s attendees, a woman whose husband was missing. “You can’t find that anywhere, I’ve researched, and you can’t find a counselor that knows what the families of the missing go through.”

Other sessions focus on tactical and emotional resources available year-round, personal care tips, and eating healthy to sustain high, positive energy.

A significant aspect of the retreat is the opportunity to spend three days with others who, like them, have someone missing. In many cases, this is the first time they’ve been able to speak face-to-face with others who truly understand what they are going through.

Having someone missing can be a socially awkward situation. Some friends and family say nothing, and some even avoid those with missing loved ones. Some say the wrong thing, and some eventually can’t handle seeing someone in what they assume is a stuck position in their life following the disappearance. http://projectjason....p?topic=8971.0. Those with missing loved ones do not open up to people they’ve just met because they fear what their reactions may be. So, having a missing loved one is sometimes a silent anguish. At the retreat, however, attendees openly share their stories with each other in a safe environment.

“In the five years since my daughter went missing, this is the first time I’ve had anyone to talk to,” says a woman with a missing adult daughter and one of last year’s attendees.

At the end of the 2009 Keys to Healing Retreat, nearly all attendees walked away with notable progress toward healing, some remarking that it’s good to laugh again, some relieved of pent-up tension, and all feeling a strong bond with each other. As Jolkowski says, “It is possible to live a life full of joy while continuing our searches.”

“Life is short and it’s full of sadness, so every little bit of happiness you can gain from life you should take it,” says another attendee from last year who has a missing young adult son, “because you know, they don’t want us living a life of sadness.”

The 2010 Keys to Healing Retreat will be at a scenic, private retreat center in Omaha, Nebraska, August 13-15, 2010. Project Jason subsidizes a portion of the cost of the weekend, so it is offered at a discount, and anyone with an open police case for their missing loved one is eligible to attend.

Keys to Healing 2010 News:

Project Jason Announces Special Honoree for 2010 Keys to Healing Retreat

Omaha, Nebraska-- August 8, 2010 --Among the many missing loved ones honored at the Project Jason 2009 Keys to Healing Retreat, two were singled out as special honorees, including one missing loved one, and a loved one who was recovered.

The Project Jason 2010 Keys to Healing Retreat honored missing person is Jesse Ross.

Posted Image

The story of Jesse's disappearance began in Chicago, IL, in late 2006.  Jesse, a 19-year-old student at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, was visiting Chicago to participate in a mock United Nations conference.  At 1 am on November 21, Jesse was attending a mock Security Council meeting at the Sheraton Office & Towers.  Jesse was last seen at 2:30 am when the group took a break and he walked out of the meeting room.  Some thought that he might have walked to his hotel, the Four Points Sheraton, about ten minutes away.  What happened to Jesse next remains a mystery.  He never made it to his room, and he has not been seen since.

Jesse's parents, Don and Donna Ross of Belton, MO, have been pillars of strength and grace in hard times, not just for each other and their own family, but for families all over the country.

Don and Donna attend missing person awareness events in their community, and frequently travel hundreds of miles to support others. They've attended Project Jason's Miles for the Missing event twice, and are now two-time attendees at the Project Jason Keys to Healing retreat. They also attended Omaha Missing Person's Day in 2007.

They take time to listen to others, and without pause, say "yes" to support needs from others in the same position.

"Many years ago, when we first became acquainted, I received a surprise in the mail one day," remembers Kelly Jolkowski. "It was a set of postcards with my son Jason's photo and information, all ready for me to send in the mail for awareness. Don and Donna had ordered them for me in an effort to help me with my case. I was so touched. I knew that these people were not just your average nice people, they were earth angels."

Don and Donna also participated in Project Jason conference calls with other families of missing persons, and in fact, met the family of this year's special recovered honoree, Christopher Michael Pierce, during one of those calls.

The Ross family demonstrates that you don't have to form a nonprofit organization to make a difference. They regularly contribute to support conversations on the internet on social networking sites, such as Facebook. They also, with Jesse's friends from the band "A Dead Giveaway," host awareness events such as Opiefest, an annual music celebration and fundraiser, and Opie's Tour, a multi-state band tour.

"There are days you're paralyzed, but I know I have to pull it together," Don says. "We're not going to give up on Jesse and let him down. As far as we know, Jesse can't save himself, so we need to be diligent."

"Faith makes hope possible,"  Donna said. "You have to have hope.".

It's clear the Ross family is not going to give up on Jesse, nor on helping other families in any way they can.

America’s Most Wanted ‘My Story’ Submissions Added as New Benefit
at Project Jason 2010 Keys to Healing Retreat

Omaha, NE – August 10, 2010 – A new benefit -- AMW “My Story” submissions -- was just announced for attendees of the Project Jason 2010 Keys to Healing Retreat.  Professional filming by documentary filmmaker, Christina Fontana, will feature families of the missing discussing their cases, which will be submitted for consideration for the America's Most Wanted "My Story" segments.

“America’s Most Wanted has an enormous reach,” said Project Jason President and Founder, Kelly Jolkowski, in making the announcement. “The ‘My Story’ segment, which gives families a chance to get their stories  in front of millions, is a blessing to all of us searching for our loved ones. It’s our honor to be able to offer this service to attendees at this year’s retreat.”

Although not all submissions are selected by AMW for airing, all will be recorded according to specifications required by the America’s Most Wanted technical department, and all will be submitted for consideration.

Filming will be done free of charge, thanks to the generosity of Christina Fontana, a professional filmmaker who has a number of television, movie, and documentary credits, and who is currently filming “Project Jason: A Voice for the Missing.” The film is expected to be released next year, and is in process of fund procurement for completion and distribution.
