15 Kansas children on list of vanished
Mom hopes to see daughter again

BY AMANDA O'TOOLE
The Wichita Eagle

Today is the 25th annual National Missing Children's Day, and no one knows it better than Dee Clasen, who hasn't seen her daughter in seven years.

April Wiss was 16 and scheduled to testify against a man in a statu-tory rape case when she disappeared. Clasen said her daughter wasn't happy about having to testify, but had agreed to.

At the time, police said they thought Wiss had run away.

Authorities have received more than 300 tips about Wiss' whereabouts since then.

Clasen said her daughter often talked about California and thinks her daughter may be there and in trouble -- possibly caught up in drugs and prostitution.

Clasen will be at Towne East Square today, attending a candlelight vigil for National Missing Children's Day. The event is from 6 to 8 p.m. on the lower level near Dillard's.

Kansas has 15 missing children listed on the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's Web site, www.missingkids.com. Four of them, including Wiss, are from Wichita.

Sgt. Mary Mattingly of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Child Unit said Clasen's story drives home the point that any child can go missing.

"It's not just a problem that happens everywhere else. It's a problem that happens here in Wichita," she said. "We're responsible for children no matter what our jobs are... because children can't protect themselves."

Clasen started the local Missing Children's Day events in Wichita a year after her daughter disappeared. The events started with Clasen handing out fliers in front of City Hall -- later they moved to Exploration Place and the malls.

Through the years, more organizations have joined her. Today's event will include the local Missing and Exploited Child Unit, the Wichita Children's Home, Youthville and others. Identification kits that record a child's physical description, photo and other attributes will be available for parents.

"I want Wichita... to look at the fliers and to know that our kids are missing in Kansas," Clasen said.

Wiss will turn 24 in September, and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has used technology to age a picture of the girl. The altered photo shows a young woman who resembles Wiss, with lighter hair and a more defined face.

"It's not her," Clasen said. "The only image I have in my mind was how she was when she left."

But she's hopeful someone will look at the picture, recognize her daughter and call police.

"When there's a child missing, there's always a piece of you missing."

April has been placed on Project Jason's 18 Wheel Angels campaign. A special poster has been made for her and can be downloaded and printed for placement. More information about the program, and the link for the poster can be found here:

http://projectjason.org/18wheel.shtml

In addition to the campaign, April is also featured in a national trucking publication, either Through the Gears or Independent Contractor. These free magazines are distributed in truck stops nationwide and have a circulation of about 150,000.

Through the Gears and Independent Contractor are two of Target Media Partner's many publications. In partnership with Project Jason, they each feature two missing persons each per month. You can pick up your free copies at a local truck stop, but if it's far from you, you may want to call and ask if they carry that magazine. These are NOT with the regular for purchase magazines.

You can also see the current campaign information on this Target Media Partners site: http://www.thetrucke...ing_Week_1.aspx

We hope this helps in the search for April. Please consider printing and placing a poster in businesses in your community.

A note from April's mom:

I am the Mother of April. My name is Dee Clasen. On January 11th, April gave her rent and food money to her roommate. At 10pm, her roommate and her had dinner, and then her roommate  went to bed. We know that April went out about 10:30pm that night, taking only her keys, wallet, and pager. The money she gave her roommate was still there. She had her clothes and personal things there that she could have taken with her if she was running away. I do not think my girl just went away. As of today, I have not heard from her and we do not know if she ran or if something else happened to cause her to go. Please help me in finding my girl (April) and help her to come home.

Wichita Woman Finds Hope in Patterson Story

Posted: July 11, 2008 09:05 PM CDT
Updated: July 11, 2008 10:47 PM CDT
by Jim Grawe (Wichita, Kan.)

From tragedy to triumph, the Joyce Patterson story has captivated Gloria Clasen.

"I prayed for her every night," Clasen says. "I wanted her to be alive. I was jumping up and down when they found her and she came home."

While the two have never met, Clasen feels a bond because she believes her daughter April Wiss was also abducted. But April's welcome home has yet to happen.

April had recently moved in with one of her mom's friends at a South Wichita apartment complex to see what life would be like on her own. Then suddenly one morning she turned up missing. That was January 11, 2000. April was 16 years old.

"Somebody took her," Clasen says. "She got in the car and somebody took off with her."

While Clasen has no evidence for that scenario, she says April left her clothes and purse behind. Since then, police have never detected any use of her social security number.

"You don't have closure until you find something, whether they're alive or gone," Clasen says.

Clasen says she feared the worst when Patterson disappeared.

"I really thought that maybe she could ID him and he was going to do away with her," Clasen says.

But the abductor's apparent change of heart has given Clasen encouragement that April may one day show up at her front door alive and well.

"My hope is ten times fold now," Clasen says. "We brought one home. We're going to bring another one home and it's going to be April."

Missing Persons: Help Bring The Lost Home

This month's edition honors those missing during the Christmas and New Year's holidays. This time of year can bring excruciating pain to the families of missing persons. Traditions are shattered as families try to make sense of a traumatic event and how each facet of life is altered, especially moments and days we expect to be joy-filled. They struggle to recapture the meaning of the season when dark thoughts and fears prevail.

With your help to spread the word about these missing persons, families are once again given hope, and then the world seems to come alive again for them with the goodness and light that comes from kindness and love for one another.

If you are so moved, please consider Project Jason and the families of the missing in your charitable donation giving planProject Jason and CDLjobs.com extend our warmest holiday wishes to you and yours.

April was last seen on January 11, 2000 at her residence in Wichita, Kansas. She has three dots tattooed on her left hand and she also has scars on her left hand.

She was last seen leaving an apartment complex in the 500 block of Marion Road in Wichita, Kansas on January 11, 2000. Her friend told authorities that she saw Wiss heading towards Pawnee Street and Broadway Street between 10:00 PM - 10:30 PM that evening. Investigators believe that she may have had her pager, apartment keys and wallet with her as well.

April has never been heard from again. She was scheduled to testify in a felony trial two days after her disappearance. Authorities do not know if her disappearance is connected to the trial or if other factors are involved in her case. While she was initially classified as a runaway, investigators have since stated that she vanished under unclear circumstances.
