Taveta Michelle Hobbs

Raleigh, N.C. — Raleigh Police are searching for a 44-year-old woman last seen in November 2008.

Taveta Michelle Hobbs, 44, worked in Cary. Her last known address was 5809 Edgebury Road in Raleigh.

Hobbs’ estranged husband told police that she suddenly went to California. Investigators checked her credit record and found no activity since her disappearance.

A missing-person investigation was opened last month when authorities said an out-of-state family member with whom Hobbs had infrequent contact asked for law enforcement for help in contacting her.

Hobbs is described as a black woman, 5-foot-4 and 130 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone who knows Hobbs, is aware of her current location or believes they may have seen her since November 2008 is asked to contact the Raleigh Police Department at 919-996-3555.

Man says wife left 'abruptly' in 2008
BY THOMASI MCDONALD - Staff Writer

RALEIGH -- Taveta Michelle Hobbs' estranged husband says he has not seen her since October 2008. She was missing for a year before her brother finally reported her missing in October 2009.

Wake County Sheriff's Office investigated but closed the case without finding her. Raleigh police started their own investigation last month, but have had little success.

Police stopped short of saying they suspect foul play, but investigators noted in a search warrant made public Tuesday that the 44-year-old woman has had no contact with her family, nor have authorities found any evidence of an employment or credit history since 2008. The Feb. 23 search warrant was a request for her bank records to determine whether she had been using her credit card, court records show.

Now the police are asking for the public's help to find Hobbs.

Police have determined that Hobbs was last seen in the Raleigh area in November 2008, said Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue. Her last known address was 5809Edgebury Road. She worked in Cary.

The missing woman's estranged husband, Phillip Hobbs, told sheriff's deputies that his wife had "abruptly" traveled to California in 2008.

Taveta Hobbs is described as standing 5 feet 4 inches tall, and weighing about 130 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

Police are asking that anyone who knows Taveta Hobbs, her whereabouts, or even if they have seen her since November 2008, to call the Raleigh Police Department at (919) 996-3555.

Missing woman's belongings found

BY THOMASI MCDONALD - STAFF WRITER
February 12, 2011

RALEIGH -- Detectives have recovered some of the personal belongings of a missing woman whom authorities have been searching for since 2009.

The items recovered included Taveta Hobbs' computer, a personal journal, jewelry and two pairs of eyeglasses. The detectives also found a firearm, according to a search warrant application filed Wednesday at the Wake County Clerk of Courts Office.

Detectives say Taveta Hobbs' former husband, Phillip Hobbs, was living with a woman in Raleigh but moved out a little less than a year ago and left his former wife's belongings behind.

Taveta Hobbs, 45, whose last known address was 5809 Edgebury Road, was first reported missing to the Wake County Sheriff's Office by her brother, Clinton Crier, according to the search warrant application.

The sheriff's office launched an investigation in 2009 by contacting Phillip Hobbs, who told the detectives that his wife had "abruptly" left him and moved to California a year earlier.

The case was transferred to the Raleigh Police Department last year, sheriff's spokeswoman Phyllis Stephens said Thursday.

During the years that Taveta Hobbs has been missing, investigators say there has been no credit activity, no family contact or employment history connected with her, court records show.

Detectives learned that Phillip Hobbs moved out of the home he shared with his former wife in 2009 and started living with a female acquaintance in the 4200 block of Irene Way in Raleigh, court records show.

He apparently didn't live there long, because he was charged in February 2010 with violating a domestic violence protection order at the Irene Way residence. He is scheduled to appear in court March 16 to answer to that charge.

Then late last year, the detectives searched the home on Irene Way in an effort to uncover more clues leading to the whereabouts of Taveta Hobbs. They also seized mail that belonged to her and photos of the Hobbses together, in addition to the other items, court records show.

Police say Taveta Hobbs worked in Cary. She stands about 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds.

Police are urging anyone who knows Hobbs and her whereabouts, or people who think they may have seen her since November 2008, to call 919-996-3555.

Missing Raleigh woman's brother: 'Something bad happened to her'

RALEIGH, N.C. - The brother of a Raleigh woman, who has been missing since 2008, said he believes she's no longer alive.  Raleigh police said it is still searching for Taveta Michelle Hobbs, last seen in 2008 when she was 44-years-old.

Taveta Hobbs was last seen in November 2008 but it wasn't until the following year that authorities were alerted of her disappearance.

In Oct. 2009, her brother, Clinton Crier, contacted the Wake County Sheriff's Office in hopes they could make contact with her.

"I think something bad happened to her," Crier told WNCN on Sunday.

Taveta Hobbs husband at the time, Phillip Hobbs, told Wake County Sheriff's investigators she abruptly left him without explanation to move to California.

Investigators said no credit activity, no job history was found in their search for Taveta Hobbs.

She also made no contact with any family or friends, authorities said.

In 2010, the Wake County Sheriff's Office handed the case over to the Raleigh Police Department after Phillip Hobbs moved in with what was described as a female acquaintance.

A neighbor of the Hobbs said Phillip Hobbs moved out of his home late at night after Taveta Hobbs' disappearance.

Shortly after, the neighbor said police began digging in the backyard.

Raleigh police searched the home and found Phillip Hobbs left many pieces of his wife's property behind.

Police recovered two pairs of Taveta Hobbs' eyeglasses, her computer, some of her jewelry, and her personal journal.

Raleigh police said it has followed up on leads over the last few years but nothing has turned up.

The Hobbs last known address was 5809 Edgebury Road.

Raleigh police said she worked in Cary. Hobbs was studying to be a stenographer when she disappeared.

Crier said, if his sister is still alive, he wants her to know her family misses her.

"Please give us a call because your mother is besides herself and her mom....it's just...it's very difficult for all of us and her mom really needs to talk to her," Crier said.

Hobbs stands around 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.
