A Camdenton man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a nearly decade old cold case of a young man who disappeared from the Montreal area in April of 2006.
David W. Smith, born in 1963, of Camdenton was arrested on Tuesday, June 9, accused of murdering Shawn Eric Spencer. The young man was reported missing in April of 2007 a year after he was seen by family for the last time.
Smith has been charged with murder and armed criminal action.
He is being held on no bond in the Camden County Jail.
Spencer was last seen in Montreal, Mo., on April 4, 2006, by family. He was described as a drifter by family members who reported it wasn't unusual for the young man to go for long periods of time without them seeing him.
Spencer's case was has been treated as a cold case by the sheriff's department.
He was was 27 years when he disappeared.
Details on the investigation and Smith's arrest will be posted as they become available. The Camden County Justice Center was closed when LakeNewsOnline began working on the story.
Spencer was born in Blue Springs, Mo., and then moved to the Camden County area with his family. He lived in Camdenton, Linn Creek, and Montreal, Mo.
He has also lived in the state of California. Initially investigators thought Spencer might have left to return there.
Before his disappearance, Spencer held various jobs in the Camden County area working as a dishwasher and cook in local restaurants, gas station attendant, automobile detailer and a laborer at a dock manufacturing company.
The sheriff’s office worked jointly with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missing Person’s Unit; Missouri Missing; National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NAMUS); the National Crime Information Center (NCIC); and the University of North Texas Health Science Center in their investigation of his disappearance. In 2010, the sheriff's department reopened the case and did additional forensic investigations.
