A search party of 100 volunteers are looking for Joshua Davis, an 18-month-old missing since Friday night.

Police say child is very mobile and it is conceivable that he left the house on his own and took off running, covering a short area in a short period of time.

Throughout the evening, the glass front door was open.

Joshua was last seen in family's double-wide kitchen dining area with five or six family members.

Front glass door did not latch properly, police said.

Sex offender across the street is not a suspect, but his home has been searched.

Command post at Klein Road Elementary is open until 7:30 p.m. tonight (Saturday).

Search teams are focusing on area around residence, wooded area and fields. Everyone is still optimistic, police said.

Call New Braunfels police (830) 221-4100 with any information.

Updated today at 7:09 PM

The search is on in New Braunfels for a missing child.

New Braunfels police responded to the 2600 block of Savannah Hill Circle around 9 p.m Friday night for missing 18-month-old Joshua Davis.

The toddler's parents told officers the child was last seen inside of their home about 20 minutes before they called police.

Authorities say the toddler may have wandered off. But the child's heartbroken father says that's just not the case. Josh Davis pleaded to the rest of the public for their help.

Davis says his front door was shut throughout the evening and suspects his son may have slipped out after one of his friends left. The father of two says his missing boy has asthma and desperately wants him back...no questions asked.

Police and fire officials conducted a grid search of the entire neighborhood by foot and air.But their search continues for the child.

Joshua is 2 feet tall, 30 pounds, and was last seen wearing a blue and red long sleeve shirt, beige jeans and  black and white socks.

Call New Braunfels police (830) 221-4100 with any information.

False hope and sadness: Missing 18-month-old toddler remains missing

by Nadia Ramdass / KENS 5  kens5.com Posted on February 6, 2011 at 11:51 PM  Updated today at 7:34 AM

SAN ANTONIO -- On Sunday, a mother and father went to bed with their toddler missing for a third straight night.

It was an emotional day for the parents of Joshua Davis, Jr. First, authorities reported that their missing son might be dead. Then rumors surfaced that the boy was found. However, this ended up being false news.

“I went to sleep and all I could hear was my baby crying and calling for mommy,” Sabrina Benitez said.

Benitez has not experienced a good night’s rest in days since the mysterious disappearance of her 18-month-old son, Joshua.

Authorities believe the toddler wandered away from his Savannah Hill Circle home Friday night.

“I just want to know he’s OK and that he’s still alive,” Benitez said.

Sunday proved to be an emotional roller coaster ride for the family.  After 36-hours that spanned two evenings of sub-freezing temperatures, New Braunfels Police transitioned their search and rescue operation to a recovery effort. They fear the child could not withstand such harsh elements.

“As a response to that, we did bring in additional K9 search teams particularly ones that were specifically looking at cadaver dogs that search for a deceased person,” New Braunfels Police Lt. Michael Penshorn said.

Later that day, the family rushed to police headquarters after receiving word that someone posted a message on Facebook indicating someone found Davis. The message falsely reported Davis was found alive and doing well in a trailer about 10 miles away from his home on Hunter Road.

“They had my hopes up and then I came to find out this was all a joke. Whoever started that rumor, it was wrong of you,” Benitez said.

Benitez, who is expecting her next child in three weeks, believes hear baby boy was abducted and now pleads for his safe return.

“He’s still out there; don’t give up looking for him. If you don’t want us to show your face, drop him off somewhere… so he could be back at home with us,” Benitez said.

Police are trying to track down the person responsible for posting the false Facebook messages. In the mean time the search for baby Joshua continues.

Joshua is 2-feet tall and weighs 30 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue and red long sleeve shirt, beige jeans and black and white socks.

If you have any information on Davis’ whereabouts, give New Braunfels Police a call at 830-221-4570.

Search for missing New Braunfels 18-month-old turns to recovery effort

by KVUE News kvue.com Posted on February 7, 2011 at 10:29 AM  Updated today at 10:48 AM

The search for a missing 18-month-old Central Texas has gone from a search and rescue, to a search and recovery effort.

It is believed Joshua Davis wandered away from his New Braunfels home Friday night.

After 36 hours and two evenings of sub-freezing temperatures, New Braunfels police transitioned their search and rescue operation to a recovery effort fearing the child could not withstand the elements.

Then later on Sunday, the family rushed to police headquarters after receiving a tip indicating the child  was found alive in a trailer nearby. It turned out to be false.

"He's still out there. Don't give up looking for him, anyone," Joshua's mother Sabrina Benitez said. "If you don't want us to show your face, drop him off somewhere, anything, so he could be back at home with us."

Joshua's mom believes the child was abducted and is hopeful  he is still alive.

Joshua is two feet tall and weighs 30 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue and red long sleeve shirt, beige jeans, and black and white socks.

If you have any information on his whereabouts call New Braunfels police at 830-221-4570.

Hopes dim for missing tot
Cadaver-search dogs are brought in by authorities.

By Guillermo X. Garcia  Published: 08:38 p.m., Sunday, February 6, 2011

Under clear, sunny skies, cadaver-search K-9 teams fanned out across a narrow area of rough terrain in south New Braunfels near the Guadalupe County line Sunday morning.

The sometimes frantic search-and-rescue operation for 18-month-old Joshua Davis Jr. had just transitioned into a recovery effort.

Meanwhile, a frustrated Sabrina Benitez cried for her child missing since Friday night, pleaded for his safe return and refused to give up hope even as she sought to alert authorities to a person she suspects of wrongdoing.

But while Benitez and her boyfriend believe someone may have taken their child for unknown reasons, authorities said nothing indicates foul play.

Police reluctantly acknowledged that if the youngster were on his own as they believe, his chances of surviving sub-freezing temperatures overnight Friday and slightly warmer temperatures Saturday night appeared slim.

New Braunfels Police Lt. Mark Penshorn said “circumstances and common sense” dictated that authorities transition their effort. That meant replacing more than 100 human volunteers with specialized K-9 teams that focus on sniffing out cadavers.

“At this point, the child has not been located, and we are switching from search-and-rescue mode to recovery,” a somber Penshorn said early Sunday.

Nothing much had changed by Sunday evening, Penshorn said, adding that uniformed personnel would continue to search through the evening and morning hours.

After searching for more than 36 hours, authorities said the cold nights and the time that the toddler had been missing forced a change in strategy.

That also meant a downgrade in hopes that the child would be found safe.

That bothered an already agitated Benitez, 23, the toddler's mother, who is three weeks away from delivering her third child.

She believes someone who was at the family's mobile home Friday night, and possibly the last one to see the child inside the home, is responsible. She was critical of what she termed the police's refusal to investigate her claim.

“We have nothing that would indicate he was abducted or taken away by someone,” Penshorn said. “We are proceeding on the idea that the child wandered off by himself.”

Police were pessimistic about chances of finding him unharmed as more time elapsed, and the child went without cold-weather clothing and his asthma medication.

“Because of the overnight temperatures and the length of time he's gone missing, common sense dictates that we change out of search and rescue,” Penshorn said.

Saturday, dozens of local residents as well as volunteers from the San Antonio-based Heidi Search Center and Travis County Search and Rescue units focused on a large open field and wooded area adjacent to the mobile home park in the 2600 block of Savannah Hill Circle. The mobile home park is in south Comal County near West Klein Road and South Walnut Avenue.

It was there that the toddler was last seen around 8:40 p.m. Friday.

Sunday morning, dog-handler teams combed areas that contain thick vegetation, streams and other difficult-to-traverse terrain.

Sobbing loudly between answering questions, Benitez was critical of police efforts and questioned why volunteers were called off the search.

“I just want my baby back,” Benitez said between sobs. “Where is my baby?”

FBI and Texas Rangers Join Search for Missing New Braunfels Toddler

(New Braunfels, TX) -- The Texas Rangers and the FBI are now assisting in the search for a missing New Braunfels toddler as those efforts enter Day 5. 18-month old Joshua Davis Jr. was reported missing Friday night after he presumably wandered out of his home on Savannah Hill Circle, which sits off of Walnut and Klein Road, in an area surrounded by large fields of tall grass, thick brush, and rocky terrain. New Braunfels Police still say they have no evidence that leads them to believe the boy was abducted. We spoke with New Braunfels Police Lt. Michael Penshorn who says that yesterday’s search saw crews look over an expanded area (along with key spots in the original search area just to be sure). And Penshorn reiterated that police detectives have interviewed a number of people throughout the course of this investigation, from the parents, to several people that were at the toddler’s home the night he disappeared, to registered sex offenders in the immediate area. To hear comments from Lt. Penshorn, just click on the Audio Clip link below.

The massive search for the boy includes, at this point, K-9 cadaver dogs, dive teams (that are searching the waters of nearby creeks, stock tanks, and ponds), specialized camera equipment (which was brought in to search several holes that were too deep for people or dogs to search safely), and a special airborne drone from Wimberley was flown in that took several high-res photos of the search area from the sky. But so far, there still has been no sign of the missing boy, who appears to have simply vanished Friday night. If you have any information on his whereabouts, call 221-4570.

Crews retrace search for missing Texas toddler

The Associated Press  Feb. 7, 2011, 6:54PM

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Police aided by state officers and bloodhounds are retracing their steps in the search for an 18-month-old Hill Country child.

The search for Joshua Davis Jr. has been ongoing since his family reported him missing from their mobile home in southwest New Braunfels on Friday evening.

New Braunfels police Lt. Michael Penshorn says searchers removed the skirts Monday from the crawlspaces beneath the homes in the mobile home park where the family lives. Penshorn says a parallel criminal investigation also is under way into the circumstances behind the boy's disappearance. He said he had no information on the details, but the family was cooperating.

Penshorn had said Sunday that the search had changed to a recovery effort after hopes dimmed for the child after a weekend of subfreezing weather.

Family holds prayer vigil for missing toddler

Reported by: Lauren Lea  Published: 2/08 11:19 pm  Updated: 5:42 am

NEW BRAUNFELS-- The family of a missing toddler held a prayer vigil Tuesday night outside their home.  18-month-old Joshua Davis Jr. was last seen in the home Friday evening.

Dozens of friends, family members and even strangers showed up to show their support for family members, who insist Joshua was abducted.

Police believe the child wandered away from the home, however, Lt. Mike Penshorn says they are "confident" he is not within a mile radius of the home.  Law enforcement officers expanded their search area by another mile Tuesday and used dive teams and drones to search the area surrounding the home in the 2600 block of Savannah Hill Circle.

Investigators also removed a tarp and a bucket from the backyard of the home, which could be considered evidence.  Penshorn could not say how long the items had been there or why they were taken.

Police also talked to Joshua's pediatrician who said the boy would not have survived more than 24 hours outside in the below freezing weather.  Joshua suffers from asthma and requires medical attention for his condition.

The FBI has also joined the investigation and they are not ruling out the possibility Joshua was kidnapped.

Comal County Crime Stoppers is now offering up to a $5,000 reward for anyone with information about Joshua's disappearance.

Forensics Now the Focus in Search for Missing Toddler

(New Braunfels, TX) -- The focus has shifted again in the search for missing 18-month old Joshua Davis Jr, who has been missing for nearly a week now. New Braunfels Police officials say their focus is now honed in on investigating certain forensic leads, although the ground and air search for signs of the missing boy continues to expand, now out to the 2-mile radius surrounding the boy’s home on Savannah Hill Circle, which sits off of Klein Road and Walnut Avenue.

New Braunfels Police Lt. Michael Penshorn says that in the last 24 hours there’s been a significant increase in the number of FBI agents that are now participating in the investigation, as many as 30 agents, many of which are from the San Antonio Field Office and their forensics analysis team.

That forensics team spent most of yesterday searching the boy’s home and going over evidence collected from early on in the investigation, along with new evidence, including a bundle that was taken from the backyard of the home that Penshorn identified as a tarp and a bucket that had been identified as items of interest.

But despite that kind of investigative activity, police officials say that they do not have a particular suspect or person of interest in mind. And they say that as the process of elimination continues, the tips they get through Crimestoppers will play a larger and larger role, and anyone with any information about the boy, his whereabouts, or how he went missing is asked to call Crimestoppers. You could be eligible for a reward of up to 5-thousand dollars. Call 620-TIPS or log on to http://comalcrimestoppers.org.

Search For Missing Texas Toddler Is Coming Up Empty
The whereabouts of a missing 18-month-old Texas toddler remain a mystery.

NEW BRAUNFELS (February 9, 2011)—Authorities continue to search a working-class Hill Country neighborhood for an 18-month-old boy who’s been missing since Friday.

New Braunfels police report no new developments in the search for Joshua Davis Jr., whose family reported missing from their mobile home in southwest New Braunfels Friday evening.

On Tuesday, investigators carried large items wrapped in black, loaded them into a truck and drove off.

The boy's father, Josh Davis, said he didn't know what the investigators were doing.

Authorities say there’s little hope the boy is still alive.

Cadaver dogs were brought in earlier this week.

K-9 teams searched rough terrain Sunday south of New Braunfels near the Guadalupe County line without success for 18-month-old Joshua Davis, Jr.

The boy was last seen at around 8:40 p.m. Friday in his family’s mobile home.

Police said they were called to a trailer park Friday night and searched the home several times and also went house to house in the area.

On Saturday, volunteers from the San Antonio-based Heidi Search Center joined emergency officials in an expanded search of an open field and nearby woods.

The toddler was last seen wearing a blue and red long sleeve shirt, a gray long sleeve T-shirt, a beige and white onesy, beige jeans and black and white socks.

DAY 5: Trash cans collected in neighborhood of missing NB toddler

by James Muñoz / KENS 5 Posted on February 9, 2011 at 11:11 AM Updated today at 6:22 AM

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- Little Joshua Davis, Jr., has been missing now for five days.

If he wandered off as New Braunfels police first thought, they say he would not have survived the first night of freezing temperatures.

Police are reviewing everything they've gathered so far, and as each day passes it gets more and more difficult for everyone.

The 18-month-old disappeared while seven adults were in the home. It was the child's grandfather who called 911 on Friday night. They say the toddler had not been seen for 20 minutes. Now it has been five days.

Tuesday night, more than 150 people showed up for a prayer service. Earlier in the afternoon, a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter searched areas around the mobile home where Joshua had last been seen.

At the same time, investigators pulled into the backyard and loaded a large black plastic bag. They stayed there for about 10 minutes, a spokesperson said, to collect items from the area as they try to solve this case.

Wednesday afternoon authorities cordoned off one block around the family's home. Investigators collected trash cans from all the homes in the immediate block.

Police said they lack evidence of a crime and they need more information to move on. Comal County Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest or indictment in this case.

If you have any information, call 830-620-TIPS.

One Week Later: Searchers Seeking More Tips on Missing Toddler

(New Braunfels, TX) -- K-9 dog teams continued searching areas around the home of missing 18-month old Joshua Davis Jr. yesterday, but they also searched areas far from his home, on the other side of town. For the 2nd time in the last week, investigators were back in the area of Hunter Road and Country Ridge Drive with dog search teams scouring more densely wooded areas, searching for signs of the missing boy. New Braunfels Police officials wouldn’t say specifically why they were in that area yesterday, but did say that they were following up on any and all tips they get from the public, and that yesterday’s search off Hunter Road was one of those places they were following up on.

At 8:30 tonight, 18-month old Joshua Davis Jr. will have been missing for 1 full week. New Braunfels Police officers were on scene within minutes of the initial phone call reporting him missing, and immediately began searching the neighborhood and fields off Klein Road and Walnut on one of the coldest nights this winter. That search, and the questioning of family and friends that were at the home the night the boy disappeared, continued into the next morning, when over 100 community volunteers showed up to help look for the missing toddler. And over the last week, the search has now covered a full 2-square mile radius surrounding the boy’s home, the boy’s parents have been interviewed a number of times by police, along with other family members, friends, and neighbors.

Police officials continue to ask for tips from the public. If you have a tip for investigators, call New Braunfels Police directly at 221-4100 or call Crimestoppers anonymously at 620-TIPS. You could be eligible for a cash reward of up to 5-thousand dollars. And stay tuned to AM 1420, or log on to kgnb.am, for continued updates on the search for Joshua Davis Jr, 18-months old, last seen wearing a blue and red long sleeve shirt, with a grey long sleeve t-shirt, a beige and white onesy, beige jeans, and black and white socks. He stands about 2-feet tall and weighs about 30 pounds.

'Stressful roller-coaster ride': Boy's family remains hopeful

by Joe Conger / KENS 5  kens5.com  Posted on February 10, 2011 at 5:38 PM

The search area for a missing New Braunfels toddler has been expanded to include a two-mile radius around his home.

Police say that’s a lot of ground to cover for 18-month-old Joshua Davis Jr., who quite literally disappeared.

“It’s been a stressful roller-coaster ride, just wondering how it could happen," said the boy's father, Joshua Davis Sr.

The little boy's disappearance has puzzled law enforcement for almost a week and has kept his family on a mission.

“Today, we’re just going to get more fliers,” Davis said.

Fliers already dot the boy’s quiet neighborhood. That’s where New Braunfels police continued to walk the block Thursday, catching residents who may not have been home to answer their doors in the last five days.

In that time, drone aircraft and bloodhounds have joined search parties. The Texas Rangers and FBI are searching, too.

Authorities said they do not believe it’s a kidnapping.

“I’m optimistic that we will find out exactly what happened," said Lt. Michael Penshorn of the New Braunfels Police Department. "We’re all hoping that he’s found safe and sound.”

With a $5,000 reward for information, there have been leads developed, he said.

The boy’s father says sightings in nearby towns of toddlers matching little Josh’s description give the family hope.

“It helps out that someone may have seen him, that he’s still with us," Davis said. "I hope that one of the leads or phone calls will bring my son back home safe.”

The family plans its own search and is asking for volunteers for Saturday to search beyond the two-mile radius. But they also hope their son will be found before then.

Search continues for Baby Joshua

Published: 2/24 6:38 pm

SAN ANTONIO - It has been three weeks since 18-month-old Joshua Davis vanished from his New Braunfels home. Since then, the toddler's mother has given birth to another baby boy. Joshua's uncle says it’s a bitter sweet time for for the Davis family.

Johnny Davis said, “It was hard he looks just like baby Joshua. His name is Jaden Davis. And we're just praying Baby Joshua will come back home to everybody.

Mom and baby are home from the hospital.

Meanwhile, tips continue to pour into investigators. They do say they have received some valuable information which has helped in the search for the toddler. Police confirm they have sent search teams out to several specific locations, but have turned up nothing.

While the baby’s parents believe their baby was kidnapped, Police seem to be ruling that out. Joshua's parents are planning another search for their baby this Saturday.

Cary Clack: One boy, missing but not forgotten
Published 11:01 a.m., Saturday, August 13, 2011

[Excerpt...]

Rarely do we witness an Elizabeth Smart-type ending in which, despite enduring unspeakable brutality, the child is returned alive to family.

Which brings us to Joshua Davis Jr., who was 18 months old when he went missing on Feb. 4 from his home in New Braunfels. In a mobile home full of adults, including his parents, the boy somehow disappeared into the cold night, and the hundreds of volunteers who searched the area never found a trace of him.

Tuesday will be Joshua's second birthday. We know nothing of his fate or who's responsible for his disappearance, but that he is alive to celebrate is the only birthday wish that matters; that he's returned to the people who love him is the only present — or presence — anyone wants. The only gift that can be offered to him now is the gift of remembrance.

As One Case Closes, Another Remains Open: Search for Joshua Davis Jr. Continues by New Braunfels Police

Friday, September 16th, 2011

(New Braunfels, TX) -- One local mystery was solved last week with the discovery of Shannon Smith’s burnt orange pickup truck, and the murder suspect’s body, less than 2 miles from the scene of the crime. But there’s another local mystery that New Braunfels Police still want solved: The case of missing New Braunfels toddler Joshua Davis Jr., who went missing over 7 months ago, on a cold February night.

[Excerpt..]

As for Joshua Davis, Jr., the then 18-month old toddler (now 2-years old) went missing outside of his home on Savannah Hill Circle, off Klein Road and Walnut Avenue.  Multiple searches for the boy took place in extremely cold temperatures back in February, when the daylight hours were much shorter.  But those conditions, of course, have changed.

Experts: Media biased in missing kids coverage

October 10, 2011 11:10 AM

(CBS News)  Over the past week, there was an intense media focus on Lisa Irwin, the 10-month-old Missouri girl who, according to her parents, was taken by an intruder from their home in the middle of the night.

As investigators search for Lisa, there are thousands of other missing child cases that fail to capture the nation's attention.

CBS News' Susan McGinnis reports that Joshua Davis disappeared during a family gathering at their San Antonio, Texas, home last February.

Sabrina Benitez, Joshua's mother, told CBS News, "We picked the crib up, we looked inside ... and we (saw) no sign of him."

Updated Wednesday, Feb 1 at 5:53 PM

NEW BRAUNFELS -- Joshua Davis Jr. went missing from his grandfather's mobile home in south New Braunfels last February.

Seven adults were inside the home at the time. New Braunfels police said their investigation over the past year points to something happening inside the residence.

One or more of the seven adults knows what happened, police said.

Around Thanksgiving authorities spent seven days at Lake Dunlap responding to a tip. The search turned up nothing and police are reviewing the case and speaking to everyone involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call Comal County Crime Stoppers at (830) 620-TIPS.

There is a vigil for Joshua on Saturday at the Heidi Search Center at 4115 Naco Perrin Blvd. at 1:30 p.m.

Missing Josh Davis Jr. remembered on his third birthday

Posted: Thursday, August 16, 2012 11:45 pm

NEW BRAUNFELS — Joshua Davis Jr.’s family celebrated his third birthday at his grandmother’s house Thursday night in New Braunfels.

And amidst tears, balloons and cake — which his little brother prominently fingered — relatives remembered Josh and prayed for his safe return.

New Braunfels boy missing 2 years
Family of Joshua Davis Jr. marks somber anniversary with prayers, balloon release

Author: Tim Gerber

Published On: Feb 04 2013 09:58:12 PM CST
Updated On: Feb 05 2013 12:10:12 AM CST

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -
Benitez and Josh Davis Senior have been waiting to be reunited with their son for 2 years.

Joshua Davis Junior was just 18-months-old when he virtually vanished into thin air from his parent's New Braunfels mobile home on February 4, 2011.

Despite no signs of the boy ever being found by investigators, Benitez refuses to give up hope.

Until they come to me with something else I believe my son's alive," Benitez said. "I believe we'll all be together as a family again."

A massive search effort in the days following the toddler's disappearance turned up nothing in the fields around the family's rural home. New Braunfels Police said they're no closer to finding the boy or solving the case.

Investigators said there were 9 people in the mobile home the night Joshua disappeared. Investigators said some of those friends and family members have not been cooperative.

"I believe there are people who aren't cooperating but I can stand here and say that me and Josh, we've cooperated 100 percent," Benitez said.

Tired of being considered suspects by some in the community, Josh Davis, Sr., said they've done everything that's been asked of them by police.

"I've cooperated, Sabrina's cooperated," Davis said. "Every time they've called us in, we've went down there."

Because so much time has passed, it's likely Joshua Davis looks nothing like his picture on the missing person flyer that's been circulated for the past 2 years. In fact, Kate Shields, Executive Director of the Heidi Search Center said the boy probably looks an awful lot like his younger brother.

Shields said the two boys looked nearly identical as babies and she believes Josh's physical progression may be similar to the younger brother he's never met.

"You know Joshua's face could look much like (his brother) now which is of course looks very much like his mother," Shields said adding they are working to get an updated picture of Joshua on flyers using age progression.

As the family continues its search for answers, they pray little Joshua will find his way home and make their family whole again.
