Witness Report Triggers Shift in Search for Elderly Pacifica Woman

By Gideon Rubin
July 27, 2012
Police have shifted their area of focus in their search for a missing elderly Pacifica woman based on information gleaned from a witness account Thursday night.
A witness told police they saw a woman matching the description of missing 76-year-old Maria “Marlies” Jansen on the 1500 block of Rosita Road at about 5 p.m. The witness told police the woman was walking westbound.
The sighting is  about a half mile southwest of where they’d assumed she’d gone missing on the 900 block of Park Pacifica Avenue, and about two hours after she was last seen by her husband, authorities said.“We’ve kind of hit the reset button” Pacifica police Sgt. D. Wachtelborn told Patch.
“We’ve shifted the focus from the area we’ve been searching the past two and a half days to the area that coincides where recent sighting.”
Wachtelborn confirmed a published report that Jansen likely suffers from early dementia.
“Basically, it’s an unconfirmed diagnosis, but according to the family she’s showing signs of early dementia,” he said.Police continued to comb the rugged hillside area in a search that is now in its third day, tapping multiple law enforcement agencies for mutual aid assistance.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department, along with Sheriff’s deputies from Alameda and Monterey counties have aided in a search that’s included infrared-equipped aircraft, mounted units, K-9 units, bloodhounds, and other trailing dogs.
“We’ve pulled out every stop imaginable,” Wachtelborn said. The search for the missing woman began Wednesday evening has continued overnight, with 83 searchers from multiple agencies working all hours through the first two days. Up to 40 searchers will work today’s search, Wachtelborn said.
Despite Jansen’s likely disoriented mental state, police believe there is a chance that she’s still alive. She’s described as an avid hiker who is in excellent physical condition for a woman her age.
“A lot of people seem to feel if she’s not found within the first 24 hours she’s simply done for, but that’s not the case,” Wachtelborn said.Police believe Jansen could have found shelter in a shed or unlocked car, and may have found a water hose. They believe she can survive on her own at least up to four days.
“She may be confused and not be able to get home but still be able to care for herself,” Wachtelborn said.“It’s entirely possible that’s she’s OK.”But police acknowledge that time is running out, and that Janesn’s mental condition, her age, the difficult terrain and the frigid overnight temperatures present formidable challenges.
The window “is narrowing and that’s why we’re continuing to reach out to allying agencies,” Wachtelborn said.
“We’ve really stretched San Mateo County (Sheriff’s Department’s search and rescue teams) past their limits. A lot of them are still here but they’re exhausted.”
Jansen is a 5-foot-5 100-pound Caucasian with brown hair and brown eyes. She may be wearing yellow “croc” type  garden shoes and a dark colored jacket.

Search for missing woman called off

July 30, 2012, 05:00 AM

A 76-year-old Pacifica woman remains missing after search-and-rescue teams spent the weekend combing neighborhoods and a mountainous county park near her home.
Maria “Marlies” Jansen was last seen by her husband on Wednesday afternoon at her home in the Park Pacifica neighborhood, Capt. Fernando Realyvasquez said today.
Realyvasquez said more than 300 search-and-rescue personnel participated in ground and air searches spanning four days. Most of the searches were carried out in and around San Pedro Valley County Park.
Jansen’s home is close to the park, and she was known to hike there with her husband, Realyvasquez said.
“She has a history of hiking in the park for many, many years,” he said.
Jansen, who suffers from an early stage of Alzheimer’s disease, is about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 100 pounds. She has brown eyes and gray-brown hair, and was last seen wearing bright yellow Crocs shoes.
The searches involved fixed-wing aircraft from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol, and officers from as far away as Marin and Monterey counties, Realyvasquez said.
The search effort has been called off, though police will continue to investigate the case, he said.
“We will continue the missing-person investigation,” Realyvasquez said. “We’re going to follow up on any possible leads as the days go by.”
Anyone with any information about the case is asked to call Pacifica police at (650) 738-7314.

Pacifica woman still missing after one week
By By Jane Northrop

Updated: 08/01/2012 08:12:10 AM PDT
Police cancelled on Tuesday the official search for Maria "Marlies" Jansen, a Park Pacifica woman missing since last Wednesday, but the investigation continues.
She is 76 years old, Caucasian, 5'5", 100 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.
The Pacifica Police Department released a press advisory over the weekend that categorizes Jansen as at risk due to the length of time she has been missing and other mental/physical conditions.
She's been missing since last Wednesday at about 5:30 p.m. when her husband told police officers he hadn't seen her in a few hours.
Police searched nearby homes and the nearby San Pedro Valley County Park with no results. Pacifica police called search and rescue teams from Marin to Monterey counties for assistance. Teams from all agencies joined local volunteers who continued to search for Jansen over the weekend and early this week.
Police said she was last seen wearing bright yellow "croc" gardening shoes or boots and doesn't know if she is wearing a jacket. This picture was taken in April and shows her in a jacket she often wears while walking in Pacifica.

Missing Elderly Pacifica Woman Case Continues to 'Boggle' Police
By Gideon Rubin
August 21, 2012
Nearly four weeks after an elderly Pacifica woman went missing, few promising leads have emerged, police say.
Maria “Marlies” Jansen, 76, was last seen by her husband on the 900 block of Park Pacifica Avenue during the afternoon hours of July 25. A witness told police they saw a woman matching her description on the 1500 block of Rosita Road later in the day.
Jansen's mysterious disappearance triggered a massive search of an 1,100 acre swath of San Pedro Valley Park and the surrounding Park Pacifica areas, with infrared-equipped aircraft, mounted units, K-9 units, bloodhounds, and other trailing dogs deployed over a five-day period.
"We've put a lot of time and resources into that case," Police Chief Jim Tasa said.
Tasa said the case remains under investigation, with a police sergeant assigned to the case, but he acknowledged the best chance of finding her alive was during the early days of the investigation.
"(This case) has us boggled," Tasa said. "There's nothing new at this point in time."
Jansen is a 5-foot-5 100-pound Caucasian with brown hair and brown eyes. She may be wearing yellow “croc” type garden shoes and a dark colored jacket. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Pacifica Police Department (650) 738-7314.

The search for a 76-year-old Pacifica woman who has been missing for almost a month continues, and now her husband is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to finding her, reports the San Jose Mercury News.
"She is an avid walker who regularly walks the trails at San Pedro Valley Park. Despite an exhaustive search of the areas she is known to frequent, she has not yet been located," husband Christian Jensen said in a flier that offers the $10,000 reward.
Marlies Jansen is a 5 feet, 5 inches tall, 100 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She may be wearing yellow “croc” type garden shoes.
