Reward now $25K in missing person case
BY NICK BONHAM THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
Published: July 13, 2013 | Last modified: July 13, 2013 08:16AM
The reward for information in the case of Kelsie Schelling, missing since February, has been raised to $25,000.
The 22-year-old Denver resident was last seen in Pueblo on Feb. 4.
“There are still a lot of people in town who didn’t know this happened in their community,” her mother, Laura Saxton, said Friday,
Deputy Chief Andy McLachlan of the Pueblo Police Department said detectives are still investigating but he had no new updates to offer in the case.
Schelling’s boyfriend and father of her unborn child, Puebloan Donthe Lucas, 21, was arrested on a warrant for identity theft for using her debit card shortly after she disappeared. The charge was later dropped.
“I don’t believe Kelsie ran off. I think she’s being held against her will or was harmed,” Saxton said.
The reward money is for information that leads to “the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects responsible for her disappearance,” a press release said.
Tips can be made to Crime Stoppers, 542-7867.

Colorado woman Kelsie Schelling has now been missing 7 months
Family: Shelling's due date is Sept. 13
Posted: 09/04/2013
Anica Padilla
Colorado woman Kelsie Schelling has now been missing for seven months, and family members say the expectant mother is just days away from her due date.
Schelling, 22, left Denver and went to Pueblo on the night of Feb. 4 to meet her boyfriend.
Police said according to cellphone records, Schelling made it to Pueblo, but she hasn't been seen since.
Kelsie's family said they think Schelling was pregnant when she disappeared.
"Kelsie traveled to Pueblo on the evening of February 4th at the request of her boyfriend, after she confirmed to him, earlier that day, that she was pregnant," Kelsie's aunt Beth Saxton wrote in a letter to 7NEWS. "We have not seen nor heard from Kelsie since then."
Kelsie's mother, Laura Saxton, said, "Whatever happened to her that night, also involved her unborn child. My first grandchild as well. We are doing everything in our power to find our missing loved one."
Schelling is 5-foot-4 inches tall and weighs about 120 pounds. She has three tattoos -- a Chinese symbol on the back of her neck, cursive writing on the inside of her left arm and a fleur-de-lis on her right rib cage.
Video surveillance from a Walmart in Pueblo shows Schelling’s vehicle parked in front of the store on Feb. 5 around 12:05 p.m. The car was left there overnight.
Police said the video showed an unidentified man getting into the car on Feb. 6 at 7:20 a.m. and driving off.
That video won't be released to the public, police said. It is sealed as part of the investigation.
The car was found Feb. 14 at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital. Surveillance video showed that the vehicle was parked there about 24 hours after it was picked up at Walmart.
Schelling's family said after Kelsie disappeared, her credit card was used once. They say it was used by her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas.
There is a $25,000 reward offered for solid information that leads to Kelsie, according to the Help Find Kelsie website run by her family.

Police: Missing Woman's Disappearance Likely Result Of Foul Play
By: KKTV
Posted: Thu 9:53 AM, Sep 12, 2013
The Pueblo Police Department now believes that Kelsie's Schelling's disappearance is likely the result of foul play.
Schelling arrived in Pueblo from Denver on February 4 of this year and hasn't been heard from since. Her family says she was eight weeks pregnant when she went missing.
Thursday, police said this about the investigation:
"Throughout the seven-month investigation, many things have been looked at and investigated, along with the fact that there has been no activity on Schelling's financial accounts, cell phone or social media pages.
"The Pueblo Police Department believes these facts make it a probability that Kelsie has met with foul play due to her disappearance."
Schelling is described as a white female with a tan. She has dark brown hair and hazel eyes. She is 5-foot-4 and weighs 120 pounds. She is 22 years old.
If you have any information that can help police with this investigation, you are asked to call 719-553-2502 or Crime Stoppers at 719-542-STOP.

Family of missing pregnant woman holds rally in Pueblo
11:54 AM, Nov 16, 2013
Will Ripley
PUEBLO - The family of a missing Denver woman is fighting to keep her story alive.
Kelsie Schelling's family held a rally Saturday in Pueblo, where the 21-year-old pregnant woman disappeared nine months ago.
Colby Schelling, Keslie's brother, says her family won't give up until they find justice.
Schelling says her family gathered for the rally in Pueblo, in an attempt to put pressure on police to continue chasing down leads in Kelsie's disappearance.
The 21-year-old was eight-weeks pregnant when she went missing in early February.
Kelsie's family says she sent ultrasound pictures to relatives and also to her boyfriend Donthe Lucas.
Cellphone records show Donthe asked Kelsie to come to Pueblo when she got off work on Feb. 4, telling her "he needed to speak with her in person."
Kelsie lived in Larimer Square in Denver.
Her mother says she made it to Pueblo, but was never seen or heard from again.
Police later found her car in a hospital parking lot, but still no sign of Kelsie.
Her family is frustrated with what they call a lack of progress in the investigation.
They say her boyfriend and his family have changed their stories, and are refusing to cooperate with Pueblo Police.
"The bottom line is we're not going to give up. We're going to keep fighting to bring Kelsey and her baby home. Whoever knows what happened to her, just know that we're not going to stop until we find her," Colby Schelling said.
Kelsie's family put up billboards around Pueblo.
The family is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads them to Kelsie.
The past couple months have been especially difficult, as Kelsie's due date would have been in September.
Pueblo detectives continue looking for more leads.
If you know anything that can help, call Pueblo Police at 1-855-4-KELSIE.

Pueblo police: Kelsie Schelling investigation not a cold case
by Travis Ruiz
Posted: 01.16.2014 at 10:12 AM
PUEBLO, COLO. -- The Pueblo Police Department says the investigation into the disappearance of Kelsie Schelling is not a cold case.
In a statement released on Facebook Thursday morning, the department said it is continuing to work on the case as new leads are developed. A lead investigator was assigned to the case at the beginning and they remain dedicated to the case with the help of other detectives from the Crimes Against Persons section.
Schelling's boyfriend is still considered to be a 'person of interest,' police said. No further details about him were released.
The department said because some statements were made by people who have limited knowledge of the investigation, it felt the need to release a 10-point fact list about the investigation. (Scroll down to see the full list.)
Schelling, who would now be 23 years old, went missing Feb. 4, 2013.
Police said last year that Schelling drove to Pueblo to meet an acquaintance at Walmart before she disappeared.
Schelling’s car, a 2011 black Chevrolet Cruze, was seen on surveillance video being picked up on Feb. 6 by an unknown family. The vehicle was later found at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital. Surveillance footage showed the car had been parked there since Feb. 7.
As for Schelling’s phone records, they showed that she was in Pueblo until at least Feb. 7. That’s when police said the cell phone battery died. It has not been turned on since then.
Schelling's family said she was pregnant at the time of her disappearance.
In September of last year, police said foul play was likely in Schelling's disappearance after no there was no activity on her financial accounts, cell phone or social media accounts.
"The Pueblo Police Department believes that these facts make it a probability that Kelsie has met with foul play due to her disappearance," the department said in a statement on Thursday.
Any information about Schelling’s whereabouts can be reported to Pueblo police at (719) 553-2502 or Pueblo Crime Stoppers at (719) 542-STOP.
Statement from Pueblo police
The Pueblo Police Department understands the frustration being felt by friends and family of Kelsie Schelling. This investigation is equally frustrating for the men and women of the Pueblo Police Department. Some statements have been made by individuals who have limited knowledge of this investigation, nevertheless, we feel the need to provide you with factual information.
1). This case is not a cold case. It has been worked continually since Feb. 12, 2013, and continues to be worked as new leads are developed. A lead Investigator has been assigned this case from the outset, and he is assisted by other Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Section depending on the information.
2). The police are bound by the laws of the land. The United States and Colorado Constitutions are living documents that set the parameters on what the police may or may not do. As an example:
a. The police cannot arrest individuals without reaching a legal standard called “Probable Cause”.
b. The police may interview individuals, but they cannot force someone to talk.
c. The police do not use unlawful methods to solve a case.
3). The Pueblo Police Department is involved in this matter as a result of Ms. Schelling’s car being found within the City of Pueblo, after she had reportedly visited her boyfriend.
4). This investigation was almost one (1) week old when the Denver Police Department provided us with the case material.
5). Our investigator has been in consistent contact with the family, particularly Ms. Schelling’s mother, throughout this investigation.
6). Ms. Schelling’s boyfriend has been, and continues to be a “person of interest”.
7). The Pueblo Police Department has worked in collaboration with other police agencies and private sector companies with the expressed purpose of locating Ms. Schelling.
8 . The investigators assigned to this case are dedicated professionals who, besides the members of her family and friends, may be the only other advocates for Ms. Schelling.
9). We understand that a family is grieving and that the family will never forget their loved one. We will never forget her as well. We will continue to look at every lead, no matter how inconsequential, until this case is solved.
10). If anyone has any information on the disappearance of Kelsie Schelling, please call the Pueblo Police Department at 719-553-2502, or Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-534-STOP (7867).

PUEBLO, COLO. -- On Monday Feb. 4, 2013, Kelsie Schelling traveled from Denver to Pueblo to meet up with her boyfriend. Her family hasn't heard from her since then.
Now, one year later, Pueblo police are asking for the public's help in solving the case.

Through their investigation, Denver police found the 22-year-old had traveled to Pueblo.
Schelling's car, a black Chevy Cruze, was found five days later in the parking lot of St. Mary Corwin Hospital. A surveillance tape revealed an unidentified person pulled into the parking lot, locked the car and walked away from the scene.
Months after her disappearance, the Schelling family revealed Kelsie was pregnant at the time and had traveled to Pueblo to share the news with her boyfriend.
Pueblo police said Schelling's boyfriend continues to be a person of interest in the case.
Ahead of the one year anniversary of Kelsie's disappearance, Pueblo police released a statement asking the public to share any information they may have about the case.
Witnesses can submit tips by calling Pueblo Crime Stoppers at (719) 542-STOP (7867).

On the evening of 02/04/13, Kelsie Schelling came to Walmart, 4080 W. Northern, to meet her boyfriend, and has not been heard from since. Schelling was reported missing by her parents to the Denver Police Department on 02/09/13.
Detectives from the Denver Police Department initiated the investigation and found, through cell phone records, Schelling had traveled to Pueblo. Denver Detectives issued a BOLO for Schelling and her vehicle.
On 02/14/13, Schelling’s 2011 black Chevy Cruze was found in the parking lot of St. Mary Corwin Hospital. Upon reviewing the surveillance tape, it shows Schelling’s vehicle pulling into a parking lot at St. Mary Corwin Hospital, on February 7th, 2013 around 5:30am. The lights of the vehicle come on as if the vehicle was locked and an unidentified person leaves the scene walking.
There has been extensive coverage in the media in regards to the searches by both the police department and the family. Schelling is still missing, and her family needs closure. We believe there is someone out there who has intimate knowledge of the incident, but may feel reluctant to come forth with the information. Please know that your information may be that one missing piece we are needing to bring this case to a conclusion.
The Pueblo Police Department and the family of Kelsie Schelling are pleading for anyone who has direct information about this incident to please call Crime Stoppers at 542-STOP (7867) or Detective Neal Robinson at (719) 553-2470.

News5 Investigates: Kelsie Schelling's family files amended lawsuit against the City of Pueblo and police department

By Eric Ross
Kelsie Schelling's family has amended their lawsuit against the Pueblo Police Department.
You may recall, Schelling's mother, Laura Saxton, filed suit earlier this year and is upset with how detectives are handling her daughter's disappearance.
The complaint reveals troubling accusations that the Pueblo Police Department botched the case by failing to send evidence off for testing and ignoring leads.
Laura Saxton has come to accept the fact that her daughter may not longer be alive.
However, she says she'll keep fighting until she gets answers about what happened.
"She deserves to be brought home,” Saxton told News5 in an interview earlier this year. “She doesn't deserve whatever happened. She needs to be back with her family."
From justice walks to searches, the family isn't giving up.
They believe Kelsie met with foul play, and are pointing the finger at Kelsie's boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, the last known person to allegedly see Kelsie alive.
Surveillance video from a Wal-Mart parking lot shows a man driving off with Kelsie's car. A week later, the car was found abandoned at Saint Mary Corwin Medical Center.
Police released photos to the public which are grainy.
In the lawsuit, Saxton claims the police department refused to send the video and images off to the FBI for further enhancement to see whether they can ID the man.
The suit also claims Det. Neal Robinson searched Kelsie's car and told the family the car was wiped clean and that no evidence was recovered. According to Saxton, a year later, Robinson confessed he had lied.
Bodily fluids had been recovered, but had not been submitted for testing, according to Saxton.
Schelling's family also alleges the police department never searched Lake Minnequa following a tip.
“It is city policy for the Pueblo Police Department that we not comment on lawsuits or litigation against the City of Pueblo or Pueblo Police Department,” Deputy Chief Andrew McLachlan told News5 reporter Lena Howland back in February.
The amended lawsuit adds a fourth claim of relief for civil conspiracy, alleging the police department and Lucas' family worked together to prevent the Schelling family from accessing evidence and other information pertaining to their daughters case.
The family says the police department interfered with their ability to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Lucas family before the statute of limitations expired.
The lawsuit also names Donthe Lucas and three relatives.
The Pueblo Police Department and city attorney's office couldn't confirm whether they received a copy of the amended complaint.
Attorney Gordon Vaughan, who represents the City of Pueblo, confirmed to News5 Monday afternoon that they have received a copy of the complaint.
Vaughan told News5 he understands the family's pain, but says the idea that the Pueblo Police Department didn't aggressively pursue the case is absurd.
Vaughan says thousands of hours have been spent looking into this matter, but says because this is an active investigation, he couldn't comment further at this point in time.
