Family of missing Viera teen offering cash reward for information

May 15, 2013

Written by J.D. Gallop

Family members of a 16-year-old Viera boy who went missing nearly two weeks ago are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to his whereabouts.

William “Billy” Patient was last seen May 5 swimming near the Juno Beach Pier while on an outing with 10 other boys from a private treatment center known as The Academy in West Palm Beach. The U.S. Coast Guard searched more than 1,000 square miles off the coast for nearly two days as police combed the coastline in all-terrain vehicles.

“We’re hoping against hope,” Rita Patient said of her son’s disappearance.

Relatives joined Patient and conducted an intervention with the Viera High School freshman who was deeply affected by his father’s death last year. The family said they sent him to the all-inclusive center for help treating his ongoing depression.

“I sent him there to get the help he needed…I entrusted them with Billy...,” Patient said, adding that the family has a number of unanswered questions about the facility and the handling of Billy’s care.

The Academy specializes in care for troubled teens. It is operated by American Addiction Centers, which has treatment centers across the U.S. The company did not return phone calls from FLORIDA TODAY. Billy’s uncle, Joe Stewart of Sarasota, said the family is desperate for answers and is offering $25,000.

“The police are really doing what they can and they’re leaving no stone unturned. I was down there while the Coast Guard was searching and all you saw were planes going back and forth over the water,” Stewart said.

Family members are hoping Billy managed to get out of the rough surf and decided to walk away.

“The police are getting information from a few people who say they may or may not have seen him,” Patient said. A journal entry believed written by Billy noted that he was going to the beach that day, but did not appear to indicate any other immediate issues, family members report.

“Some moments I want to believe that he got out and he’s on foot somewhere,” Patient said.

A prayer vigil was held for Billy, who attended St. John Catholic Church in Viera, last week. “Everyone has been extremely helpful. He would be amazed, there has been an outpouring of support for him,” Patient said.

The 145-pound teen, last seen wearing green gym shorts with a rip along the right side, is listed as a missing and endangered teen by the National Center For Missing & Exploited Children. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Juno Beach Police Department at 561-626-2100.
