Missing Woonsocket woman hasn't been seen since Nov. 11
Dec. 17, 2013
Written by Argus Leader staff

The Sanborn County Sheriff’s Office said that a Woonsocket woman who was reported missing hasn’t been seen in more than a month.

Rachel Lucille Cyriacks, 30, last was seen Nov. 11 at a temporary job at Performance Pet in Mitchell. The sheriff’s office initially received information that she was last seen there Dec. 6, but new information disputes that.

Sheriff Tom Fridley said family members reported that Cyriacks was missing Monday.

Fridley said there is no indication of foul play. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate.

He said authorities aren’t sure of the whereabouts of Rachel’s husband, Bradley Cyriacks. Fridley said he is not a suspect and that authorities aren’t actively seeking him for questioning.

“We are running down leads,” Fridley said. “Eventually we will have to talk with him.”

The two have had a difficult relationship, according to court papers.

Rachel filed a temporary protection order against Bradley in August. In the paperwork, she says she was seeking a divorce, one that he didn’t want.

Rachel says in the paperwork her husband came to her house, pulled her hair, hit her several times in the head and face and hit and pushed her. He also allegedly threatened her with a knife.

“Domestic abuse has been an issue in the past,” she wrote in a sworn affidavit. “Cops can testify to this.”

The protection order, which was in effect about a month, was dismissed after Rachel didn’t appear in court to extend the order.

Bradley had been charged with kidnapping and violating the protection order. The kidnapping charge was dropped, but he pleaded guilty to violating the protection order and received a suspended sentence in November. He served about a week in jail.

Conditions for his release specified he stay away from his wife and complete batterers classes.

Bradley was charged in November with resisting arrest on Halloween night. He’s scheduled to appear in court Jan. 21 in Sanborn County on that charge; however, law enforcement have not been able to find him to serve his summons.

“It's certainly a possibility (that he had something to do with disappearance), but we are just trying to sort out the leads right now,” Fridley said.

Fridley said Cyriacks has “a couple of children,” but that she didn’t have custody of them.

“They are with relatives,” he said.

The sheriff’s office describes Cyriacks as 5-foot-5, 140 pounds with blonde hair.

She might be driving a silver 1995 Chevy pickup truck with license plate 4CH634.

Anybody with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 605-796-4511.

Woonsocket Woman Still Missing As Leads Dry Up
December 20, 2013, 6:00 PM by Leland Steva

WOONSOCKET, SD - The search for a missing woman from the Woonsocket area continues tonight. 30-year-old Rachel Cyriacks was last seen working at a temp job in Mitchell on November 11.

Tom Fridley took over as Sanborn County Sheriff in January 1991. In his three decades of watching over the county, he says he's never been a part of a search like this.

"We've have some people that went missing but usually we found them within 24 hours," Sanborn County Sheriff Tom Fridley said.

The town of Woonsocket is not used to dealing with cases like missing woman Rachel Cyriacks. Anita Fouberg's daughter went to school with Cyriacks, and she is surprised with how people in the community are handling the situation.

"I haven't gotten the feel from anyone because it hasn't really been talked about you know, other than what's been read in the paper and seen on the news up to this point," Fouberg said.

The Sanborn Sanborn County Sheriff noticed the same trend, but he would like to hear more discussion to help with the investigation.

"There's not as much as I think there should be, but I don't normally have a lot of missing people, so this is a new adventure to try and round up information," Fridley said.

Fouberg believes that the fact that Cyriacks traveled out of town a lot might have been why it's been so difficult to find her.

"She didn't work locally in town, so I mean she wasn't a visual person in town very often. In fact, she was here off and on for several years that I'm aware," Fouberg said.

The 1995 Chevy pickup that Cyriacks was reported to be driving was found at the home that her ex-husband, Bradley Cyriacks, was staying at. Law enforcement looked into that lead, but it was unfounded.

"The Division of Criminal Investigation worked with that one. At this point we have no foul play that we're looking at or anything else," Fridley said.

The Sanborn County Sheriff's office urges anyone with any information, no matter how small, to call them at (605) 796-4511.

Dogs Search For Rachel Cyriacks Near Alpena

April 11, 2014, 6:12 PM by Anna Peters

ALPENA, SD - The Sanborn County Sheriff confirms that the Codington County cadaver dogs searched an area south of Alpena on Friday for any sign of Rachel Cyriacks.

The Woonsocket woman hasn't been seen in more than five months.

The searchers scoured an area in northern Sanborn County and southern Gerald County for about four hours.  Authorities decided to look at the area because it has been dug up for drainage work.

They didn't find anything, but officials want farmers to be on the lookout as they till their fields this spring.

Cadaver dogs used in search for Rachel Cyriacks

By: Hillary

Published May 15, 2014, in Headline News

rachelcyriacks.jpg

The search for Rachel Cyriacks continues as law enforcement used cadaver dogs in an area south of Alpena Friday, but came up empty.

A large amount of dirt had been displaced last fall when an area was dug up to install a tile drainage system. Sanborn County Sheriff Tom Fridley says the recent dirt work could have left open the possibility she was placed at that area.

Fridley is urging farmers and local residents to take some time this spring to look around on their property, including fields, shelterbelts, drainage ditches and abandoned buildings, for anything that may seem unusual.

Thirty-year-old Cyriacks has been missing since mid-November. She lived in Woonsocket and worked a temporary job at Performance Pet Products in Mitchell, where she was last seen.

Her house in Woonsocket was vandalized April 6 with the words “Riverside for Life” and an expletive spray-painted on the outside. A window was broken from the inside and a table and light fixture broken inside.

A helicopter search was also conducted about a month ago between Huron and Woonsocket, to no avail.

If anyone has any information that may be tied to this case, they are asked to call the Sanborn County Sheriff’s office at 605-796-4511.

Authorities ask hunters to help in search for missing Woonsocket woman

Michael Klinski, mklinski@argusleader.com 3:16 p.m. CDT October 17, 2014

State law enforcement officials are hoping pheasant hunters out in the fields this weekend can help find clues in the case of a a missing Woonsocket woman who disappeared almost a year ago.

Rachel Cyriacks, 30, was last seen in Woonsocket on the morning of Nov. 13, 2013.

Sheriff Tom Fridley said officials haven't received solid tips about Cyriacks' disappearance in months, and they want to remind the public, as well as hunters, to keep an eye out when they are out in rural areas. Cryiacks is described as 5-feet-5, 140 pounds.

Fridley said the last development in the case was in March, when officials used helicopters to search for evidence.

"Nothing has panned out," Fridley said. "That's the frustration of it."

Based on the lack of leads and any other information, Fridley said law enforcement officials are treating the case as if Cyriacks is dead.

"We believe she is probably not alive," he said. "We are still optimistic (we will find something), but it is hard to keep optimistic."

In January, officials said a silver Chevrolet pickup belonging to Cyriacks was found with severe damage to the undercarriage.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sanborn County Sheriff's Office at 605-796-4511.

No new evidence in Woonsocket woman's disappearance

Updated: Thu 9:52 PM, Nov 13, 2014

A year after her disappearance, there is still no sign of thirty-year-old Rachel Cyriacks.

"You're wishing upon hope that she's going to walk back and say hi, but then you've got the other side of reality that it's probably not going to happen," Sanborn County sheriff Tom Fridley said.

Cyriacks was last seen on Nov. 13, 2013 and has not been heard from since. Fridley, who has led the search for the Woonsocket woman, says he is baffled by the lack of evidence in the case.

He said the police department has brought in scent dogs and asked local farmers to keep an eye out while flying crop dusters, but the search has yielded no results.

"You can't get the leads, you can't get what you need to solve it," he said.

In spite of the lack of information, Cyriacks's community has not given up hope.

"Somebody knows something," Bobbi Jo Hanson, a friend of Cyriaks, said. "They have to. And somebody will step forward."

Fridley asks that anybody with information about Cyriaks's whereabouts call the Sanborn County sheriff's office.

"I don't care if its third hand, I'd rather chase down a dead end than pass up one where someone says later 'well, gee, I knew that,'" he said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sanborn County Sheriff's Office at 605-796-4511.
