GRANVILLE, N.Y. -
Day four of a missing Vermont man and still no sign of him on Tuesday. But investigators say they did uncover a new clue. Jonathan Schaff's cellphone was found in an abandoned vehicle, and that could give investigators a piece of the puzzle. As the search for the Fair Haven man continues, many in town where Schaff went missing, say the community is on edge.
"A lot of people out there are looking for him. It's a sad situation," said Granville N.Y. resident Ernie Wood.
Wood says people aren't giving up on finding 23-year-old Jonathan Schaff. Police say the Fair Haven man was last seen early Saturday morning.
"He simply disappeared -- and we don't have any leads pointing us in a direction," said Capt. Donald Patch of the Vermont State Police.
Granville police say Schaff left the Riverside Pub around 4:30 Saturday morning after getting into an altercation at the bar. Police say he had parked a vehicle just over the Vermont boarder and was last seen walking back on Route 149 towards the car with two friends.
"During the day on Monday and during the day today we conducted ground searches of the area. We covered the roadways that he would likely walk on -- if he did cross the border on 149 -- for up to five miles," said Patch
Vermont and New York Police are working together and called upon the Vermont National Guard for a helicopter search on Tuesday. Although the ground and air searches were unable to locate Schaff -- police say they did find his cellphone.
"It was located in an abandoned vehicle at the Loomis Trucking -- which is where the car was that they were walking to that evening to go home," said Patch.
Captain Patch says police will be scaling back on searches -- to focus more energy on interviews and investigation. For many locals like Ernie Wood they are hoping for the best, but fearing the worst.
"Everybody is worried about him -- it's kind of a bad situation. There has been an extensive search for him -- but no results yet. They are finding clues every day -- but it's looking more and more bleak all the time," said Wood.
Police say although Schaff was last seen Saturday Morning -- he wasn't reported missing until Monday morning when he didn't show up to work. Officials say at this point, there is nothing to indicate his disappearance is suspicious. If you know anything about his whereabouts -- you are asked to call police.

Search resumes for missing man
Jonathan Schaff disappeared four months ago at Vermont border
By Bob Gardinier
Updated 8:47 pm, Tuesday, May 6, 2014
Searchers returned Tuesday to the banks of the Mettawee River to look for Jonathan Schaff, last seen walking from Granville toward the Vermont border on nearby Route 149 almost four months ago.
A ground search was mounted early Tuesday with officers and recruits from the New York and Vermont State Police, New York state Department of Environmental Conservation and Granville Police. Divers are going into deeper pools in the river as well, troopers said.
Schaff was last seen walking on the route, which crosses the state line, after leaving a Granville bar in the early morning hours of Jan. 18. He turned 24 three days later.
Family members have set up a Facebook page, "Bring Jonathan Schaff Home," in the hope of getting information that could help their search.
"Please if anyone has any pictures of Jonathan and them or of Jonathan period feel free to add them to this site, the more the better," the family posted on the site.
Searchers worked for several weeks in subfreezing temperatures, but called off further searches in March due to heavy snow and ice.
The Fair Haven, Vt., man was last seen around 5 a.m. walking east on East Main Street (Route 149) after leaving the Riverside Bar on West Main Street. Witnesses said he had been in a fight. He was walking with two people who had offered to give him a ride and were returning to their car, which was parked at Loomis Trucking on Route 149 just across the border in Vermont.
Schaff, the pair told police, walked off ahead of them and when they got to their car was nowhere to be found.
Schaff's cellphone was found days later in an abandoned vehicle in the lot next to the Mettawee River, prompting officials to assume Schaff fell in the river.
Vermont State Police Capt. Donald Patch has said Schaff was close to his family and friends and would not go for an extended period of time without contacting someone, especially when his birthday passed.
Schaff was wearing a sweatshirt, brown Carhartt jacket and jeans. Anyone with information should call (802) 773-9101, submit an anonymous tip to www.vtips.info or send a text to CRIMES (274637) with keyword VTIPS.

One year later, still no answers for a missing man's family

AIR HAVEN, Vt. -
On January 18th 2014, Jonathan Schaff disappeared.
"So I'm thinking, if they did something nasty to him they did use May's car to do it. Now I can't prove that... But I'm saying," says his father, John Schaff.
He allegedly got into a fight at the Riverside pub in Granville, New York. After that, his family can only guess.
"I said Jonathan, let's go home. We'll finish out what we're doing. He said no dad, I'm enjoying myself. Then, okay, you need a ride or figure something or whatever, call me or mom and we'll come get you. And last time I knew he didn't call either one of us. So then from there I hear that he went missing," his father says.
Police had said he was last seen walking along Route 149 on January 18 last year.
Officials have searched around the New York-Vermont border with no results. The family still does not know what happened to Jonathan.
"I still keep my door unlocked, hoping he'll come home," says Schaff's mother, May Winchell.
It's hard for her, but she has not given up hope. She keeps her son's room ready for his return at her home in Fair Haven. But a year later, Winchell's hope has turned to anger.
"It's taken all I have just to hold me back from going after these people myself because I know. I know who's involved. I know," she says.
She, and the rest of Jonathan's family, are losing confidence in the investigation.
"I just don't feel like they're doing anything," his father says.
Until then, Jonathan's family waits for closure.
We have reached out to police multiple times for comment. They've been unavailable, but tell us they may be able to talk on Tuesday. If we hear more about the investigation, we will update the story.
