Spartanburg, SC
Missing Man: Investigators Looking for Darryl Miller

May 5, 2006 10:30 PM MDT

As the rain comes down on the southside of Spartanburg, this gloomy day doesn't compare to several dark nights for one family. They're looking for Darryl Miller his friends and family call him "Preach".

"Nobody deserves this as far we know my brother could be out there somewhere in the woods decaying and everything , we just can't bury him like that," said Roxanne Bradley.

She is Darryl Milller's sister. Bradley and her brother Terry Stephens last saw their brother Darryl, last July.

"We can't love on him no more and somebody took that away from us and can't nobody give it back to us. It can't be replaced," commented Bradley.

They don't want to think the worst, but as time goes by, it is what they fear.

"His truck was found, his cell phone, his wallet, but no one found him," said Stephens.

It's even hard for Roxanne to look at her brother's picture on a missing person's flier, but she's seen the flier before. In fact, the family passes out dozens of fliers on the southside of town. We found a flier inside DeeTrax convenience store.

"We just keep hope that's the only thing we can do," said Stephens.

They hope fliers will lead to answers they've been looking for. The family says people last saw Darryl Miller hanging out with friends at the Crescent Hill Apartment Complex and in the area near South Church street. The family says they just want closure.

"We're praying that they will do their part and hear the call of God and move on compassion and tell us something," said Bradley.

Investigators with the Spartanburg Public Safety Department say Darryl Miller disappeared July 31st. There is a $3,000 reward being offered for information in the case. If you know anything call Spartanburg Crimestoppers at 58-CRIME.

Missing Man: Investigators Want to Talk to Man Last Seen with Darryl Miller

Posted: May 18, 2006

On the southside of Spartanburg there's a corner store and other spots where people hang-out. Investigators with the Spartanburg Public Safety Department say there's also a bizarre mystery in the area that could involve a missing man.

His name is Darryl Miller and his sister, Roxanne Bradley says she can't believe he just vanished. "It is going on about a year and everyday it seems like it should get easier, but it doesn't it gets that much harder," commented Bradley.

When Bradley gets in her car and drives around she says she can't help but think about her brother and his disappearance. "I was a person that was full of joy, but now sadness has started to take over," said Bradley.

Detectives say witnesses saw Darryl Miller hanging out with some friends last July 31st near Bomar and Crescent Avenues. Some people say they also saw him at the Crescent Hill Apartment Complex and now they want to talk to David Carson. "David Carson we know for sure that he was with Darryl Keith Miller that night, even into the early morning of the 31st."

Investigators aren't calling Carson a suspect, but they hope he can give them some information that could help them find Darryl Miller. So now missing persons' fliers of Miller hang in stores on the southside of town, investigators hope it will generate new leads and family hopes so too even though they fear the worst. "My life will never be the same," said Bradley.

Detectives say they found Miller's truck parked at his house. They say they found Miller's wallet and cell phone inside the truck.

There is a $3,000 reward for information in the case that will lead investigators to Darryl Miller or information on David Carson. If you know anything about the case call Crimestoppers at 58-CRIME.

Man still missing after a year

JASON SPENCER, Staff Writer
Published July 30, 2006

The man, Darryl "Preach" Miller, has been missing for one year as of today. He was out with a few friends late on July 30, 2005, and parted ways with them early on the 31st. He never came home.

It's not the first time he's run into trouble.

At 19, he killed a man. After eventually pleading guilty to manslaughter, Preach served more than half of a 20-year sentence. And while he has a string of criminal convictions on his record up until that point in his life, he doesn't have any since being released from prison.

Police have been looking for him, but haven't had any luck coming up with information on his whereabouts, or about what might've happened last July.

And the family is prepared for the worst.

"I believe … I'll see him again in heaven," said Preach's sister, Roxanne Bradley, 37.

"Everybody is dealing with it in their own way. I try to take it one day at a time, and each day gets harder and harder."

Growing up

Preach, now 36, and his sister grew up on the south side of Spartanburg, in Tobe Hartwell.

He attended Spartanburg High School through the 10th grade. By late September 1987 -- he turned 18 that month -- he had had more than one run-in with the law, and had been convicted of criminal domestic violence and assault charges from two separate incidents.

Everybody called him Preach. Some friends didn't even know his real name. Just Preach.

Bradley said she wasn't sure where the nickname came from -- just that he'd always had it.

Every September, Preach and his sister would joke that they were twins, because for a short time they would share the same age. Preach turns 37 this year. Bradley turns 38 in November.

"When we was growing up, we used to fight like cats and dogs, but you wouldn't know that when we stepped outside. We were real tight," Bradley said.

Bradley described her brother as a man "that loves to smile. He was a type that loves to do for people. He believed in what he called 'sowing good deeds.' He's not the type that would hold a grudge. If he would get mad, he would go to the side, think about it, come back and apologize, no matter who was in the wrong."

But Preach hadn't always been able to walk away.

Deadly dispute

In October 1988, Preach shot Robin Odell Robinson five times in the back.

The two had been friends for several years. The were in a parked car on Caulder Circle, arguing about $2,000, when Preach pulled a pistol from the glove box and shot him, according to Herald-Journal accounts of Preach's arrest and trial. At the time, Preach said Robinson was to have delivered $500 worth of medicine to his aunt, but never did, which prompted the argument.

Preach drove the bleeding man almost all the way to Spartanburg Regional before abandoning him and the vehicle they were in. Robinson died four hours after he was found lying on the car ramp to the hospital's emergency room.

Turning around

After prison, Preach divided his time between Bradley's home in the Monk's Grove community and his mother's place on South Church Street in Spartanburg.

For a while, he had been helping wash cars, but in early 2005 he struck out to start his own yard maintenance business. Those who know him say he would often cut elderly people's yards for free.

"Even if he had to cut a whole yard with a weed eater so it was good enough for him, he would. He felt the yards represented who he wanted to be. He wanted everything to be perfect," Bradley said.

Elease Dodd-Holcombe only knew one side of Preach.

"For a long time, I didn't know that he had been in trouble," she said. "I didn't know that until after he was missing. When I'd go to get my hair done, he lived next door, and he'd always be there. He would always hug me, and he had this beautiful smile."

Samuel Means, the minister at the Sigsbee Church of Christ, said that after prison, Preach "was a different person. As a matter of fact, he helped me at my home one day. He was a different young man."

Means baptized Preach about a week before he disappeared.

Looking for answers

The family plans to hold a candlelight vigil at 8:30 tonight at Bradley's home on Bishop Street in the Monk's Grove community.

Police figure that Preach was out with four people last July 30, visiting different homes on the city's south side. A couple were dropped off, which left Preach with a longtime acquaintance, David Carson.

Investigator Jay Steadman with the Spartanburg Public Safety Department says Carson isn't a suspect, or even a "person of interest." Carson has a lengthy criminal history, which includes a conviction for trafficking cocaine.

At this point, investigators have found "nothing to indicate anything like a homicide," Steadman said. "We haven't had any clues, any leads within the case. It's hard to function in the world without having your name show up somewhere."

Charges Don't Give Family Full Closure
Man Missing Since 2005; 2 Charged In Connection

POSTED: 8:47 pm EDT September 17, 2008
UPDATED: 9:32 pm EDT September 17, 2008

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Spartanburg's Southside is usually a busy area of town at any time, and detectives said it is the last place anyone saw Darryl Miller alive.

Miller disappeared more than three years ago in July 2005.

"It's just really hard, you know? It's sad that it ended this way," Terry Stephens, Miller's brother, said.

Since Miller's disappearance, Stephens said he knew something awful happened to his brother.

Those who knew Miller well called him "Preach."

Stephens said he and his family posted fliers in convenience stores and around town, but he said now the reality is even harder to deal with.

"We are grateful that an arrest has been made, but it (is not) full closure because we have not found his body to give him the proper burial that we would like to give him," he said.

Investigators with the Spartanburg Public Safety Department said David Carson, who was Miller's friend, and Leon Jones killed Miller during a robbery.

Carson and Jones were arrested and charged with murder on Tuesday.

Stephens said his brother had just started his own lawn service before he disappeared.

"If somebody needed something, by all means (he would have given) it to them. I don't think they would've had to kill him and just throw him somewhere like, you know, he's nothing because he meant something to us," Stephens said.

Police said they believe Miller was shot, but they said his body has not been found.

However, they said DNA evidence points to Carson and Jones.

"We do have some closure, but it (isn't) full closure," Stephens said.

Family members said they believe someone still has more information about the case.

Witnesses said they also saw Miller hanging out at the Crescent Hill Apartment Complex the night he disappeared.

"I miss him dearly, man, and I hate this happened like this and ended like this," Stephens said.

Now, he said he just wants justice for his brother, a man who he said had a good heart.

30 year sentence each

Local Men Receive 30-Year Prison Terms For Murder
Body Of 35-Year-Old Darryl Keith Miller Never Recovered

POSTED: 11:17 pm EDT March 17, 2010
UPDATED: 11:36 pm EDT March 17, 2010

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Two Spartanburg men received 30-year prison sentences on Wednesday after they were found guilty of killing an acquaintance.

David Carson, 43, and Leon Jones, 46, were found guilty of murder at the conclusion of a two-day jury trial.

The two were convicted of killing Darryl Keith Miller, 35, in 2005. The victim’s body has never been recovered.

Spartanburg police filed the murder charges in 2008, about three years after Miller was last seen by family members leaving a Sunny Street home.

In the days following the disappearance, witnesses reported seeing Miller with a lot of money in the presence of Carson and Jones.

Police also found traces of Miller’s blood inside Carson’s car, they said. The blood was located on the passenger-side door and seatbelt of Carson’s car.

Carson told police Miller was shot during a robbery that occurred on the south side of the city and he drove him to the hospital. Carson claimed he couldn’t get anyone to help him at the hospital and he fell asleep with the body in the vehicle. Jones admitted to killing Miller during a police interview.

Neither man called 911 in reference to a robbery or the shooting, investigators said.

During his police interviews, Carson admitted to helping dispose of the body but he denied any involvement in the murder. He tried to help the police find the body at multiple locations in Union County.

“I hope today’s verdict helps the family of Darryl Miller in their quest for closure,” said Principal Deputy Solicitor Barry Barnette. “They got some of their questions answered with today’s verdict. I hope they someday learn the whereabouts of their loved one’s body.”

Carson and Jones will serve every day of retired Supreme Court Justice E.C. Burnett III’s prison sentence. They are not eligible for parole.
