My Note: Daniel's case was posted by me back on the old forum. I posted it because at the time, it was stated that they thought he might be an international abduction. Please note that this case was previously posted on our International Forum, which has since closed. We have grandfathered this case in to our US case files. No other foreign cases will be posted.

Parents can assist with Daniel Morcombe case
Blue car seen parked near local school, say witnesses
THE blue car linked to the abduction of Palwoods teenager Daniel Morcombe may be
the same vehicle seen parked near a local school in the months before his December
disappearance.
Two witnesses have told police they each saw an earlymodel blue sedan parked in the
vicinity of Woombye State School before Daniel was abducted on Sunday, December 7,
from the nearby Kiel Mountain Road overpass.
Detective Inspector John Maloney was yesterday reluctant to say the car's occupants
had been ''staking out'' the area with the intention of abducting a child but said this was
a potential scenario police were investigating.
''Well, it's a possibility ... and that is why we need to identify the vehicle and eliminate it
from the investigation,'' Det Insp Maloney said.
He said investigations of the car at the centre of Daniel's abduction had dominated
police resources that could otherwise be channelled into other aspects of the
investigation.
''We need to find (the car), identify it and we need to find out why it was here.'' Police
today will wrap up a mammoth four-day doorknock of hundreds of Woombye homes.
Det Insp Maloney hoped that would bring fresh information from residents who
remembered seeing the blue car.
A mobile information booth was also set up yesterday on Pine Grove Road , about 200
m from the Woombye school.
''There may well be someone out there who has seen this car and was suspicious of it ,
parents are generally very wary (about cars near schools) , and maybe someone has
jotted down a registration number,'' Det Insp Maloney said.

Mother dreads day of agony
Glenis Green
07may04

AS other mums wake up to cold toast and warm hugs this Sunday, Denise Morcombe will be opening her eyes to the worst Mother's Day of her life.

Mrs Morcombe admitted yesterday that getting through Sunday would be harder than getting through Christmas without missing son Daniel at the family's Palmwoods home on the Sunshine Coast.

Although she would have the loving support of husband Bruce, their eldest son Dean and Daniel's twin brother Bradley, now 14, Mother's Day would bring back painful memories of happier times.

Mrs Morcombe said because Bruce's mother's birthday fell near Mother's Day, the day was usually spent together in a large, raucous family gathering.

"But this year we're just staying home, with Brad and Dean," she said.

Shuffling through a box of handmade cards and presents crafted by her boys for her over the years, Mrs Morcombe said Daniel had always been the most sensitive of the three – often buying or making her spontaneous presents.

As well as the usual handpainted and glued "I love you Mum" cards, Daniel had made a backscratcher out of iceblock sticks, a "Best Mum" award and bought a bright, flashing pen.

"He was always buying me things," Mrs Morcombe said.

Even as a toddler, Daniel often used to pick flowers for his mum – from their garden or even from pathside shrubs on his way home from primary school.

Before he disappeared last December 7 from the bus stop beneath the Kiel Mountain Rd overpass on the Nambour Connection Rd, Daniel, 13, had taken off a gold chain that the Morcombes had bought for all three of their boys during travels around Greece.

They rediscovered it after he went missing and now Mr Morcombe has attached a locket to it with Daniel's picture to give to his wife this Sunday.

Mrs Morcombe said while even talking about Mother's Day was almost too painful to bear, if it would @#%$ at the conscience of his abductor – or anyone else who knew what had happened to Daniel – and lead to a breakthrough, then it was worthwhile.

However, even her steely resolve was shattered momentarily on Wednesday night when Sunshine Coast artist "Kendall" dropped in a huge handpainted Mother's Day card featuring forget-me-nots and red ribbons, signed with personal messages written by up to 100 mothers from the Siena Catholic College which Daniel had attended.

Mr Morcombe said the campaign to find Daniel had stepped up even further in the past week with a flood of offers from businesses and companies nationwide.

These included:

• An offer from Premier Coaches to play the abduction re-enactment video on screens inside their Cairns to Melbourne buses.

• A truck driver who wanted to paint Daniel's face on his long-distance vehicle.

• Paul's – which was putting Daniel on its milk cartons.

• K mart – which plans to run radio advertisements on shop speakers.

• Service stations planning to run the ads at their point of sale.

The Morcombes said it was hard to believe that five months had passed since Daniel vanished and they were clinging to the hope that the saturation coverage of his abduction would spark the vital clue needed to find him.

Man charged over hoax Morcombe e-mails
Tony Keim and Paula Doneman
19may04
A BRISBANE university student will face court for extortion after he allegedly claimed he had bought missing teenager Daniel Morcombe from his abductors.

Included in eight e-mails sent to Crime Stoppers, David Charles Brine also allegedly claimed he was using Daniel as a toy and treating him like a pet animal.

In one e-mail Brine allegedly demanded compensation for giving up Daniel, describing the missing boy as his "beautiful toy".

Brine allegedly sent Crime Stoppers several e-mails claiming he had Daniel, who has been at the centre of a national search since he vanished while waiting for a bus on December 7 near his home in Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast.

Brine, 23, allegedly sent the e-mails from computers at internet cafes, his home and Queensland University of Technology where he studied computer science.

Police became aware of the e-mails late last week and yesterday detectives from Computer Crime in the Major Fraud Investigation Group issued Brine with a notice to appear in the Brisbane Magistrate's Court on June 1 on one count of extortion.

Police media issued a statement yesterday saying police had confirmed the e-mail was a hoax and the person responsible was not involved in Daniel's abduction.

The statement also said the sender of the e-mail claimed he knew of Daniel's whereabouts and demanded money for his return.

Daniel was 13 when he is believed to have been abducted near his home in Palmwoods.

When he vanished he was waiting for the bus on Nambour Connection Rd beneath the Kiel Mountain Rd overpass.

The 1.35pm bus he was meant to catch broke down and a replacement bus failed to stop.

He was last seen by passing motorists and bus passengers about 2.10pm with a man standing near him and another man behind the wheel of an old-model blue sedan stopped alongside.

Daniel was wearing a red Billabong T-shirt and carrying a silver fob watch at the time.

Police add 20 to Daniel squad

QUEENSLAND Police have put an extra 20 detectives on the case of missing Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe after several new leads.

Acting Detective Inspector Paul Schmidt said an ABC documentary on Daniel, a trip by the Morcombe family to NSW, and an extensive media campaign had combined to spark thousands of people to call Crime Stoppers - justifying the added staff. He said police had investigated 5100 leads, but were sifting through many more.

Daniel went missing on December 7 as he waited for a bus on Nambour Connection Road at Woombye. Police fear the teenager, who was heading to Susnhine Plaza shopping centre to buy Christmas presents for his family, was abducted by two men in a blue old-model, four-door sedan, near the bus stop. Insp Schmidt said despite overwhelming support from the public, police still had no firm suspects. He urged people to continue to come forward, even if they be-lieved their information insignificant. "There's obviously some-one out there that knows what happened or has some in-formation about what's happened,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Daniel's parents Bruce and Denise were yesterday presented with a cheque for $16,000 - the proceeds from a charity rodeo fundraiser at which Maroochy Mayor Joe Natoli injured his back. The money is to be used in the awareness campaign to help to find Daniel.

Extortion charges over missing boy

June 1, 2004

A BRISBANE university student who claimed he was holding missing Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe today faced court charged with extortion.

David Charles Brine, 23, was arrested last month after allegedly demanding money to hand over the 13-year-old who went missing on December 7 last year.

Mr Brine, from Underwood in southern Brisbane, faces a maximum 14-year jail term on the charge of trying to extort money from Queensland police on May 8 this year.

He has yet to enter a plea to the charge and will face the Brisbane Magistrates Court again on June 26.

Police allege Mr Brine emailed Crimestoppers using the address "DanIsWithMe.com.au" from Net Paradise internet cafe in inner city Brisbane with the demands.

He allegedly told police Daniel was sold to him by his abductors and was well but a little "worse for wear".

After his arrest, Mr Brine allegedly told police he sent the email as a joke after drinks with friends.

Police have failed to find any trace of Daniel, who they believe was abducted while waiting for a bus near his home in Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast.

The bus he was meant to catch broke down and a replacement bus failed to stop.

A man was seen standing beside Daniel at the bus stop while a second man sat behind the wheel of an old-model blue sedan at the time.

Daniel was wearing a red Billabong T-shirt and carrying a silver fob watch.

A national hotline was recently set up in a bid to seek more information on the disappearance.

Search for missing teenager Daniel Morcombe
By NEIL HICKEY nhickey@scnews.com.au
POLICE yesterday stopped and interviewed hundreds of hinterland motorists as the search for missing teenager Daniel Morcombe took a new turn.
Acting on information from two separate sources about people in a blue car acting suspiciously on Eudlo and Bamboo roads on the afternoon Daniel went missing, police set up roadblocks at the scene in a bid to jog the memoriesof passing drivers.
Acting Detective Inspector Paul Schmidt said police fielded the first call in February when a caller claimed a blue car "with unseen occupants'' was seen travelling down Bamboo Road, pictured above, on the afternoon Daniel went missing.
He said police responded to that call by ordering a search of 200 metres ofbushland just off the dead-end road.
Det Insp Schmidt said a second call just over two weeks ago identified a blue car with two male occupants "acting suspiciously'' a short time earlier on Eudlo Road, which cuts across Bamboo Road.
He would not elaborate on the manner of the suspicious activity but did reveal a second, but wider, search of the area was conducted following the second call.
The officer said the roadblocks were set up because police were "working onthe assumption it would be a vehicle of someone who lives locally who wouldbe travelling on this road''.
He confirmed the car involved in both sightings was similar in description to the older model blue sedan seen at the site where Daniel went missing more than six months ago.
Det Insp Schmidt said the eight-hour operation, in which about 255 cars were stopped, had created a number of leads.
Yesterday's roadblocks were held barely 2km from Nambour Connection Road where Daniel disappeared on December 7.

Does lonely road hold key?
LOU ROBSON

IT'S a narrow dirt track surrounded by bush and tall stands of bamboo.

The track, west of Maroochydore, could easily escape the notice of passing motorists.

But police investigating the disappearance of Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe recently stopped and questioned 255 drivers as they travelled near the end of Bamboo Rd at Eudlo.

Last Sunday, 10 police cars lined the intersection of Bamboo and Eudlo roads to question motorists about a vehicle seen in the area the day Daniel disappeared.

A police spokesman said a caller recently described seeing a blue car carrying two men on Eudlo Rd about 2.30pm on December 7.

A car fitting the description was later seen disappearing into bushland at the end of Bamboo Rd.

Daniel was last seen at a bus stop about 5km away.

"Due to new information, police questioned 255 drivers in the area and received 25 new responses of interest," the spokesman said.

"The questions asked of those motorists have generated 25 new job logs, which we're working through."

Police were unable to search the area after Daniel disappeared because it was flooded. A recent search revealed nothing.

Residents in the quiet rural area said they'd do everything to help police. One woman, who did not want to be named, said she had talked to officers several times since Daniel disappeared.

"We all want to help in any way we can to help find Daniel," she said. "It's the same everywhere."

Red ribbons symbolising Daniel's disappearance have been tied to several letter boxes and a street sign in Bamboo Rd.

"It's upsetting to have people thinking this street could have something to do with his disappearance," the resident said.

"I don't believe that's the case, it's just a matter of checking all the information."

On Thursday, 250,000 milk cartons bearing Daniel's image and information on his disappearance hit supermarket shelves throughout Queensland and New South Wales. A Parmalat Australia spokesman said the campaign would run for about six weeks.

400 paedophiles face questions over Daniel
MORE than 7000 inquiries have been made and 400 paedophiles interviewed in the continuing search for missing teenager Daniel Morcombe.
At a Brisbane function last week, police investigating the teen's disappearance said they had taken unusual steps to push the case forward.
Senior Sergeant Julie Elliott said their involvement with the ABC Television program Australian Story had prompted hundreds of calls to Crime Stoppers, and thousands of hits during an internet chat after the episode was aired.
"We were so desperate to find clues," Snr Sgt Elliott said.
"We had an enormous amount of calls.
To this day we don't know if that very, very important piece of information is in there." Detective Sergeant Dave Wilkinson said more than 7000 job logs had been completed, and police had interviewed 2000 vehicle owners and 400 paedophiles during the investigation.
"This was just an honest, decent family.
It can happen to any one of us," Det Sgt Wilkinson said.
Snr Sgt Elliott said nothing would stop the investigation team until they had news for Daniel's family.
"We know we will find something that will bring an end to this tragic story.
We'll just keep going from this day until we get what we need," she said.
Yet despite the outpouring of support for the Morcombes and gratitude for the police working on the case, Det Sgt Wilkinson said there was one very important person missing.
"The sad thing is, this is Daniel's story and he's not here to tell."

Police possessing porn
By HAYLEY SEENEY
10jul04
TWO North Queensland police officers are under investigation for possession of child pornography and a Brisbane officer will be suspended following raids across Queensland yesterday.

The raids were carried out early yesterday as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe.

It is believed at least one of the officers under investigation is from the Northern Region, which includes the Townsville and Mount Isa areas.

Local police were contacted yesterday afternoon about the investigation of the North Queensland officers, however, no further information other than what was provided from a Brisbane media unit was available.

In a statement released late yesterday afternoon, Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said no charges had been laid against any of the officers but he decided it was appropriate to suspend the Brisbane officer.

Police stressed none of the people targeted in the raids yesterday were believed to be involved in the abduction and suspected murder of Daniel.

Yesterday's raids also included another 18 searches, mainly around the Sunshine Coast area, and police seized computer equipment.

From the 18 raids, 10 people were charged with 787 offences including child pornography, firearm and drug offences. They will appear in court over the next two weeks.

The statement said there was no evidence to suggest the offenders were part of an organised pornography ring.

On December 7 last year, 13-year-old Daniel disappeared from a bus stop near his Sunshine Coast home.

Four boys to race train for Daniel
18:03 AEST Sun Jun 13 2004

Four young boys will race a vintage steam train over an 18.5km course on Monday to draw attention to the search for missing Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe.

The four boys, Damon Condon, Daniel Hass, Alex Knight and Andrew Cross, all aged 10, will take part in Gympie's annual "Race the Rattler" event in which runners take on a restored 1927 vintage steam train in a race from Dagon in the Mary Valley to Gympie.

Damon's father Greg, who has been training the boys, said they were all confident of making the distance, but were under no illusions they would beat the train or set any records.

The race has been part of the Gympie festival for six years, with honours about equally divided between runners and the train.

"Realistically we probably won't beat the train, but we are confident of crossing the line about 25 to 35 minutes behind the lead runners," Mr Condon said.

His brother, Detective Inspector Mike Condon, heads the Brisbane Homicide Squad and has been involved in the investigation of Daniel's disappearance.

The idea to enter the race came up in family discussions, Mr Condon said.

"It just grew from a small idea when we were talking about what we could do to help the Morcombe family," he said.

The boys plan to cross the finish line together carrying a special banner decorated with 190 red ribbons - one for every day since Daniel disappeared while waiting for a bus near his home last December.

Police said Daniel's parents, Denise and Bruce Morcombe, would be at the finish line to cheer the boys home and police would present them with certificates as acknowledgment of their efforts.

The search for information on Daniel, who was last seen on the Nambour Connection Road at Palmwoods on December 7, has been the subject of a $250,000 publicity campaign.

Police this weekend have set up a command post bus in Eudlo, close to the spot where Daniel was last seen, in the hope that someone's memory may be jogged into giving vital information.

Witnesses reported seeing two men in a four-door blue sedan near Daniel around the time he disappeared.

New campaign to find Daniel

18aug04
A NEW campaign to try to find missing Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe begins today with the release of almost two million fliers through supermarkets.

The fliers will be distributed through Coles supermarkets across Queensland and northern NSW.

Daniel went missing from a Sunshine Coast bus stop last December and his parents have mounted a massive campaign to find out what happened to him.

Fifty-three printers gave their services free of charge to print the 1.7 million fliers, which will be launched at a Coles supermarket at suburban Chermside in Brisbane.

I've been made the 'villain'
PAUL STEWART
September 26, 2004

A CD manufacturer says he has been unfairly labelled as a thief and "like a dodgy used car salesman" after his involvement in a charity release in aid of Daniel Morcombe.

Rob Katavic, of Melbourne's Automatic Distribution, said he had been savaged in media reports this week over his supposed withholding of funds collected for the missing Sunshine Coast teenager.

He denied the allegations, and laid the blame on the inexperience and ego of singer Tania Netherway, who initiated the project.

Earlier this year the Sunshine Coast-based Netherway recorded the song Daniel, to raise funds for the investigation into the disappearance of Daniel, 13, who vanished from a bus stop in the Sunshine Coast hinterland in December. He is now feared to have been murdered.

The CD was released as part of a campaign by his parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe to maintain public awareness of their son's case.

However, Mr Katavic said he had never had "any involvement with the Morcombe family" and had agreed to work on the project only after being approached by a Queensland associate.

"I was approached to manufacture the CDs as a businessman," he said. "My reputation has been ruined because you live by word of mouth in this industry."

Mr Katavic admitted he had been paid to make the CD but this just covered costs.

"I was given $3000 by Crime Stoppers and $24,000 from Harvey Norman to do this but I had to fork out for the manufacture of 10,000 CDs plus the cost of sending them express-post all around Australia.

"There were many other expenses.

"The thing is, a lot of the shops are now sending back the CDs, because no one bought them.

"Just because we have shipped out 10,000 CDs does not mean we have sold that many.

"In the end I sent Tania Netherway 5000 copies of the CD and said she would be better suited selling them herself at her concerts or out the back of her car boot.

"I did this for free even though I owned the CDs."

Mr Katavic said there was no "hidden pile of money".

"I told Tania that it all cost money and she told me to go ahead and do not worry about the expense.

"She really does not know anything about the business side of the industry. CDs are not made for free."

He added that he would not send any money to Netherway or the Morcombe family until all CD sales figures had been finalised.

Bruce Morcombe said he believed Mr Katavic owed his family more than $10,000.

"It is disheartening to think someone could rip us off and rip off Daniel as well," he said.

Mother-of-three Netherway denied she had made the CD as a publicity stunt, saying she had sold more than $8000 worth of copies herself, for use by the Morcombe family.

Giant bounty for missing teen
By Rosemary Odgers and Glenis Green

05oct04

A RECORD $250,000 reward and possible indemnity from prosecution have been offered to help solve the baffling disappearance of Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe.

Ten months after Daniel's abduction, the State Government yesterday announced the biggest reward in Queensland's history in an attempt to reinvigorate the investigation.

Daniel, 13, vanished while waiting for a bus in the Palmwoods area on December 7 last year.

Up to $250,000 will be offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his disappearance, more than double the existing maximum award of $100,000.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said anyone who may have assisted in some way but was not principally responsible for his abduction and suspected murder might also be provided with an indemnity from prosecution.

Mr Atkinson said it was "fair to say" a reward was usually not posted until an investigation had exhausted all significant leads.

He "absolutely feared the worst" for Daniel but he remained confident police would solve the case.

"We wouldn't normally post a reward if we had a very promising lead that we were immediately following up. We would exhaust that avenue of inquiry first," Mr Atkinson said.

"(But) there are still many, many avenues of inquiries of pursuit with this investigation.

"We are still very confident that we will solve this case. However in terms of timing we feel it's now an appropriate time, given that it's almost 10 months on, to announce the reward."

A team of up to 30 detectives remain on the investigation, which has been code-named Operation Vista.

They have fielded more than 8000 calls from the public.

The Morcombe family yesterday welcomed news of the reward, saying they hoped it would help solve their son's disappearance.

"We hope that the offer of a reward will be the breakthrough we need," Daniel's father Bruce Morcombe said in a statement.

"We hope that somebody, a relative or a friend of those responsible who knows something, will come forward now with vital information.

"Those responsible must be brought to justice."

Mother Denise Morcombe urged anyone with information to come forward.

"Maybe someone who does have information was too afraid to come forward before. But please, if you know who is responsible or have any information that will lead us to Daniel and those involved, please ring the police, tell someone. We have to know," she said.

Police Minister Judy Spence also revealed yesterday that police would now review about 60 other outstanding rewards offered in the state.

It is likely they will also be increased to $250,000.

However some of the rewards are believed to be up to 100 years old, because they have never been rescinded.

Missing teen's parents urge airport campaign
Thursday, 28 October 2004

The parents of missing Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe are urging all airports to adopt a campaign initiative pioneered by a north Queensland port authority.

Large, free-standing posters aimed at encouraging public input about Daniel's disappearance are in the Mackay and Cairns airports.

Bruce Morcombe says people are still coming forward with new leads almost a year after his son's disappearance.

He is confident the posters will raise even more community awareness.

"It'll make a difference in our case and we're ever hopeful it'll make a difference in perhaps saving a kid in a similar situation, as a bit of a warning and perhaps be a deterrent for somebody else who wants to go down that unsavoury path," he said.

Hope for questionnaire to spark Daniel Morcombe leads

Police hope a questionnaire sent to Sunshine Coast residents will reveal more detail about a car seen in the area around the time Daniel Morcombe, 14, disappeared.

Five thousand questionnaires designed by police working on the case have been sent to locals.

Detective Inspector John Maloney says any new information may help solve the teenager's disappearance.

"Well, we're predominantly focusing on this blue car that was seen in and around the Woombye area some weeks prior to Daniel's disappearance and indeed again when he disappeared," he said.

"So we've designed questions around anyone that has any possible information to complete the survey and forward it to us."

POLICE are hopeful a van seized in Brisbane's north side on Tuesday might produce new leads in the search for missing Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe.

Daniel, 13, vanished from the Nambour Connection Rd on December 7 last year while waiting for a bus beneath the Kiel Mountain Rd overpass near Palmwoods.

Police have since mounted a nationwide search to find the boy that has failed to yield any results.

The seizure of the van, which was decked out with DVD and video equipment, from a Bracken Ridge address has raised hopes that new information about the case will come to light.

However, a spokeswoman for Boondall Juvenile Aid Bureau Senior Sergeant Bruce Graydon said it was too early to determine whether a link between the van and Daniel could be established.

"We are looking at the property within the van, but at this stage there is nothing to indicate a link," she said.

The spokeswoman said the van was likely to assist police with Operation Scarlet – an ongoing investigation into child sex offences.

"The operation is expected to run out a few leads, so obviously we are hopeful something will direct us to Daniel," she said.

The spokeswoman said police would continue to do all they could to locate Daniel, and encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The son we lost

FRANCES WHITING
14nov04

EARLY in the morning, when the dew was still fresh on the grass and the mist was sweeping through the mountains, a small boy would slowly make his way across the paddock, edging forward on his hands and knees.

Lying down quietly beside the sleeping horse, he would put his arms around him and whisper: "It's all right, mate, everything's all right, it's only me".

The miniature horse scared easily, so the boy woke him the same way every morning, crawling across the paddock to soothe him with gentle words of comfort.

That boy was Daniel Morcombe.

There are many things about Daniel – like his deep love of animals – that the public doesn't know.

How he had a great, big belly laugh that started deep down in his tummy before exploding in bubbles of pure joy; how he loved playing tricks on his dad; and how nothing, absolutely nothing, could make his eyes light up like a big plate of his mum's home-made lasagne.

But there is a photo of Daniel that the public has come to know all too well.

It's the one that appears in newspapers, on pizza boxes, on posters and milk cartons – the one that tells us that Daniel, with his mop of black hair, enormous grin and blue-green eyes, got up one morning, set off for the shops, and vanished into thin air.

Daniel disappeared on the afternoon of December 7 last year, just before his 14th birthday, abducted from a bus stop near his Palmwoods home by one or two men thought to be driving a blue sedan.

Next month it will be a year since Daniel was taken, a year that is etched in the sorrow on the faces of his parents Denise and Bruce, who have come to believe that their boy is gone for ever.

But the Daniel they know is not the boy in the posters, the kid who people shake their heads about, but the boy behind that photo, the one who loved a joke, who loved to make things and loved spending time with his brothers – scheming, dreaming, laughing, fighting and shouting, as brothers everywhere do.

Every Wednesday night without fail Daniel could be found in the kitchen with his twin brother Bradley cooking their specialty for the family – spaghetti bolognaise.

"They were," Denise recalls, "like two old men in the kitchen every Wednesday, standing over the stove, arguing over who was putting too much garlic in or who was cooking the onions."

Dan and Brad, Brad and Dan, born minutes apart, friends for ever, so often together that one of their younger cousins called them "DanielBradley" because she thought they were the same person.

The twins came into the world on December 19, 1989, born eight weeks early and whisked straight into intensive care – two very yellow, jaundiced boys who were determined, as Bruce says, to make it.

"We never had any doubt that they'd pull through, that we'd get them safely home," he says softly.

With older brother Dean, now 17, the family was complete and Daniel grew up on the rural property on the Sunshine Coast, attending Mountain Creek State School, taking in the fresh country air, taking care of his animals, and letting his family know how much he loved them.

Never a kid to express himself verbally, not always good with words, instead Dan, as his family call him, chose to show them the way he felt.

In a small laneway on the way home from school each day, he'd pick fresh flowers for his mum, leaving perfect white camellias on the kitchen bench, where he knew she would be sure to see them.

"He loved to give us little presents," Denise smiles. "The week before he disappeared he bought two of those novelty pens filled with lollies, he kept one for himself and gave me the other.

"Not too long after he gave it to me, he came up to me and said, 'Mum, are you going to eat those lollies?' "

Sometimes, Daniel's good intentions got him into strife, like the time he and Bradley made a swimming pool for their baby ducks, digging a deep hole in the ground, putting in a huge plastic container of water – and cutting the main irrigation pipe to the pump house in the process.

"I told them to wait for me before they did it," Bruce says, shaking his head, "but they just went ahead and did it, the little buggers.

"They got in a bit of strife that day, I can tell you."

But for the most part, Daniel was a kid who didn't get into too much trouble, quiet around people he didn't know – Denise says he used to stay in his room when there were visitors "until the food came out" – secure within the family he loved to horse around with and playing tricks on his ever-patient dad.

"World championship wrestling – the three boys on the floor and Dan, strong as an ox, pinning his brothers down, that was always a lot of fun," Bruce says. "Dan wasn't tall but he was strong – and bloody determined.

"He loved a joke too. You know the old shaving cream pie trick?

"Well, Dan loved that one – I mean you knew what it was, but you had to eat it, you know, play along."

Then there was the time Daniel and Bradley met their mum after work to get a ride home, having earlier caught the bus to the local shopping centre.

Hopping up and down on their feet, urging their mum to "hurry up, hurry up", and acting, Denise says, highly suspiciously. When she got home she found the reason – a big fish tank smuggled into the boot of the car, complete with goldfish.

But behind the childhood mischief there was a softness about Daniel. It was the same softness Denise felt the first time she cradled him in her arms, and felt his perfect, baby breath against her skin.

It was the same softness that saw him quietly creep into her room when the house was dark and a little boy needed comfort.

"Until he was about 11 years old, Dan used to come into our room late at night," Bruce said.

"He wouldn't get into the bed with us, wouldn't wake us, but he would wrap himself up in an old bedspread and there he'd be in the morning.

"He always lay down on Denise's side, I guess he just wanted to be close to his mother."

When he was smaller still, Daniel's best friend was "Old Bear", a teddy bear he would never go anywhere without, and a bear Denise says was washed, sewed and stitched up so many times, he looked like he'd been in a war zone.

Denise found Old Bear not so long ago, hidden in a tin in Daniel's room by a kid who knew that adulthood was beckoning, but was not quite ready to let childhood slip away.

At the time of his disappearance Daniel was growing up, enjoying high school, growing closer to his elder brother Dean, and thinking about becoming a vet.

But all that seemed a long way away – mostly he just wanted to be with his family and his animals, feeding his miniature horse, Bullet, his favourite peanut butter and carrot sandwiches each morning and talking to his Nanna in Melbourne every Sunday night.

"The boys love their Nanna and every Sunday at 7 o'clock they'd ring her and fight over who got to talk to her first," Denise said.

For some reason their Nanna rang on the Sunday morning Dan disappeared, so she was the last one to hear his laugh.

"He had a great laugh, it started in his belly and sort of shook all the way up," says Denise. These days, their Palmwoods home is strangely quiet, and Daniel's deep belly laugh no longer signals his arrival home.

There are no white camellias left for Denise on the bench, no little gifts left under her pillow, but everywhere they look, breathe and touch is Daniel.

"Dan had already made me my Christmas card for last year, before he was taken," Denise says.

"He loved Christmas, loved giving presents even more than getting them, and I found his card for me with a hand-drawn Christmas tree on it.

"I also found a note in his drawer of what he wanted to buy me for my birthday."

It says "Large tub of Nivea Creme".

Daniel's own birthday is next month, a day that will be for his family – as all their days are now – filled with a hollow, desperate aching for their boy.

The Morcombes know that someone, somewhere knows what happened to Daniel. And they also know that person might be too scared, too confused or too ashamed to tell what they know. But they believe that it is time for that person to find the last bit of courage they have, the last shred of decency, and come forward.

It is time, the Morcombes believe, to help a family torn apart – time to let two brothers honour their best mate, and time for a mother to provide a safe resting place for her son, if not beside her bed, then deep inside her heart.

It is time to bring a little boy home.

YOU CAN SHINE A LIGHT ON MYSTERY

NEXT Sunday The Sunday Mail and Channel 7 will give you a chance to help solve the Daniel Morcombe mystery.
As the one-year anniversary of Daniel's disappearance approaches, Seven News will present a one-hour special – Finding Daniel – to "shine some light" on the case.
The program will allow Queenslanders to show their support for the Morcombe family – and express their outrage about crimes against children – by simply switching on a porch or torch light.

Seven's cameras will direct-broadcast this community event as the Morcombes see lights across the southeast being illuminated for Daniel.

The Sunday Mail is calling on its readers to back the move and there will be more details in next week's paper.
Seven News presenter Rod Young will host the prime-time broadcast from Queensland police headquarters in Brisbane.
Fellow newsreader Kay McGrath will also present an exclusive report after spending days with the Morcombe family.

His parents, Denise and Bruce, as well as twin brother Bradley and older brother Dean, have allowed Seven News into their lives and their home as they prepare for a public "goodbye" to Daniel on the Sunshine Coast on December 7.

The Morcombes not only want to find Daniel, but prevent other Queensland families from suffering the same tragedy at the hands of abductors. "They're not sick, they're evil," Mrs Morcombe said. "And they've got to be found so they don't do this to someone else."

Three months in the making, Finding Daniel will take viewers inside the Queensland Forensic Biology Laboratory to review scientific evidence central to the case and inside the investigation's crime centre to meet the detectives striving for a breakthrough.

Sketches of man seen with Daniel
By Natalie Gregg
22nov04
POLICE have released three sketches of a man seen at a bus stop with missing Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe before he was abducted.

The release of the artist's sketches is the biggest development in the investigation into Daniel's suspected murder since his disappearance on December 7 last year. The sketches are of a man who was seen standing behind Daniel at a bus stop at Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast on the day of his disappearance.

Daniel was 13 when he was abducted while waiting for a bus at the Kiel Mountain Overpass on the Nambour Connection Rd, Palmwoods, between 1.40pm and 2.15pm.

Detective-Inspector Mike Condon said yesterday the release of the sketches was a significant step in the investigation.

Insp Condon said the man had not come forward to police and they were asking the public for information on his identity.

"This is a likeness of the person seen under the bridge," he said. "Clearly that person has not come forward to date. Of course we would like to speak to this person.

"What we are asking is simply this – have a look at the sketches and say to yourself, 'Do I know this person? Is this person associated with the Sunshine Coast area? Does this person have a blue car or a white van?' and if you have an answer to those questions or you believe you can answer one or two of those questions, please contact Crime Stoppers or the Homicide Squad," he said.

Insp Condon said to ensure the accuracy of the images, it had taken police 11 months to put together the sketches.

Insp Condon said police had received about 8600 pieces of information and he expected more leads with the release of the three sketches.

The man is described as aged between 25 and 35 years, with lean to muscular build, about 175cm tall, with a gaunt face and dark brown wavy hair.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Missing teen's father reveals his anger

"Swing you bastard. Justice will be done ... your days are numbered."

The chilling words, written by the father of missing Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe, are painted on a large wooden sign. A thick rope noose hangs nearby.

For the first time, Bruce Morcombe has revealed the angry message he has written to the people responsible for his son's disappearance.

"It was just a private sign, pretty well for me to get up and keep motivated day by day to find these people," Mr Morcombe told Brisbane's 4BC radio.

"And it's a sign that 10 months down (the track) we decided to unveil and make known to the public."

The sign, which is kept hidden in the family's shed, provides a glimpse into the heartbreak of parents who have lost a son.

Nearly a year has passed since Daniel vanished on December 7 while waiting at a bus stop on the Nambour Connection Road, under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass.

A blue 1980s model Japanese-styled sedan was seen in the vicinity at the time of his disappearance.

Mr Morcombe and his wife Denise have appeared on Channel 9's Queensland's Unsolved: A Crimewatch Special, as part of their relentless bid to discover what happened to Daniel.

"We're just waiting for the day to find out what's happened to Daniel and to find the people that have hurt him, that have taken him away," Mrs Morcombe said.

"I don't believe we will see Daniel again, so it's just a matter of finding where he is and what's happened to Daniel."

In a move unprecedented in its scale, members of the public, the state government, police, businesses and sporting teams have banded together to get billboards, bumper stickers, posters and flyers across the country asking people to help find Daniel.

In October, the Queensland government offered a record $250,000 reward and possible indemnity for somebody who comes forward with a vital clue.

They are still waiting.

Queensland police Senior Sergeant Julie Elliott said police had received more than 8500 pieces of information from the public since the investigation began.

"But we haven't got the breakthrough we need, we're still plodding away," she said.

Sen Sgt Elliott said there had been another influx of calls to Queensland's Crime Stoppers following the show.

Police also expected the information to keep flowing from Sunday, when Seven News presents a one-hour special, Finding Daniel.

More Crime Stoppers staff are being rostered on to cope with the expected calls.

South-east Queensland residents will also be asked to switch on their porch lights to show their support for the Morcombe family.

"It's not just for Daniel but it's also to send a message to everyone that we don't tolerate crimes against children," Mrs Morcombe said.

Mr and Mrs Morcombe, Daniel's twin brother Bradley and older brother Dean will prepare for a "public goodbye" to Daniel on the Sunshine Coast on December 7.
