Teresa Lynn Butler

Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Missing Since: January 25, 2006 from Risco, Missouri
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: November 26, 1970
Age: 35 years old
Height and Weight: 5'7, 110 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Black hair, brown eyes. Teresa's right ear is pierced twice and her left ear three times. She has a Caesarean section scar on her abdomen and she has noticeable dimples.

Details of Disappearance

Teresa is believed to have disappeared from her residence on County Road 241, also known as Eight Ditch Road, just off of Highway 62 near Risco, Missouri on January 25, 2006. She was last heard from when she spoke to a relative on the phone at 10:00 p.m. the previous day. Teresa's husband, Gary Dale Butler, came home at 10:00 a.m. on January 25 after working the night shift at his place of work, and found his wife missing and their two sons, aged two and four years, home alone. She has never been heard from again.

The family's video camera, PlayStation with games, Nintendo Game Cube with games, large Mag-Lite flashlight, digital camera and car stereo disappeared with Teresa, along with her purse and cellular phone, but her wedding rings, black leather jacket and her forest-green Jeep were left behind. She normally took off her wedding rings every night before bed. There were no signs of forced entry to the home and no blood or indications that a struggle had taken place, but a key was found broken off in a lock at the residence.

Cellular phone records revealed that a call was placed from Teresa's phone at 3:16 a.m. on the day of her disappearance, to a residence in Gideon, Missouri. The man who lived there did not answer the phone at the time. He does not know Teresa or any of her family. After her disappearance, Teresa's cellular phone was used to place a call to Clarkton, Missouri, to a home where two elderly women lived together. The women do not know Teresa either and stated they answered the phone but heard nothing from the other end. Authorities are uncertain why the calls were made.

Gary stated his wife was not having any problems prior to her disappearance, but her coworkers stated she had received upsetting phone calls from Gary's ex-wife. She told her father Gary's ex-wife had threatened her. Gary maintains that the differences between Teresa and his former wife were amicably resolved. It is unclear whether his ex-wife or the phone calls have anything to do with Teresa's disappearance.

Teresa's disappearance is considered suspicious, as she has no history of instability or of leaving without warning, and it would be uncharacteristic of her to leave her children unattended. Her husband has been ruled out as a suspect in her case. Teresa was employed in the photo department of Wal-Mart in Dexter, Missouri at the time of her disappearance, and was scheduled to work at noon on the day she went missing, but never showed up. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance.

Good News!

Jefferson City is starting to listen! There's another bill that will help the missing; HB 757 which will provide guidelines for Law Enforcement so they will be better able to investigate and process evidence in a missing person's case. Thank you Brandy and "friends of Summer" for your hard work. This bill along with SB 67 (endangered/elderly alert) will make a huge difference. It can save lives and stop criminals.

Missouri, especially rural Missouri has way too many missing persons cases. It's time something is done about it! Contact your senators and representatives and ask them to support HB 757 & SB 67. Remember they are starting to listen.

HB 757  Establishes the Summer Shipp Act which specifies that law enforcement officers cannot refuse a written report of a missing person

HB 757 - SUMMER SHIPP ACT - Pratt, Bryan

Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 757 -- Summer Shipp Act

Sponsor:  Pratt

This bill establishes the Summer Shipp Act which specifies that
law enforcement officers cannot refuse a written report of a
missing person.  In accepting a written report of a missing
person, the law enforcement agency must attempt to gather
relevant information regarding the disappearance and reasonably
respond to inquiries from the person making the report, a family
member, or any other person in a position to assist the agency in
locating the missing person.  The agency must determine whether
the person missing is a high-risk missing person and, if so, to
immediately notify the State Highway Patrol.

If the person is missing for a period of 30 days, the agency must
attempt to obtain DNA samples from family members, an
authorization to release dental or skeletal x-rays, additional
photographs, dental information, and x-rays or fingerprints of
the missing person.

Tour bring attention to two local missing persons' cases

06/13/07
Michelle Felter

MINER - Friends and family of missing people from the area looked through scrapbooks and collages at a table Tuesday afternoon across from the Miner police station. They congregated to remember missing persons, as well as search for answers of their whereabouts.

The event, which about 100 attended, was part of a National Missing Persons tour, sponsored by the Center for Missing Persons. The tour began in North Carolina on Monday, and will make 22 stops in 11 states, to promote 75 cold cases. This is the first year the tour has stopped in Missouri, and the cases of Cheryl Ann Scherer and Teresa Lynn Butler were highlighted.

Family and Friends mark 2-year anniversary of Butler's disappearance

Friday, January 25, 2008
Trina Bell & Deanna Coronado

RISCO, Mo. -- What keeps people fighting and seeking results when it seems that everyone else has given up hope or even worse, forgotten you altogether?

According to the family and friends of Teresa Butler, who disappeared from her home in the early morning hours of Jan. 25, 2006, marking the two year anniversary of her disappearance is the motivation they need to keep moving forward in faith.

Butler, who was 35 at the time of her disappearance, seemed to vanish without a trace from her home here.

Family and friends of Teresa Butler hang yellow ribbons around the City of Risco, reminding those who pass by of Butler's disappearance.

Teresa Butler Case
Four Years Later, a mother is still missing

Sunday, January 24, 2010  George Anderson Daily Dunklin Democrat

NEW MADRID CO., Mo. -- "We still get leads just almost on a weekly basis now," said New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens when asked about the current state of a four-year-old local missing persons case.

"When I say a lead, what that means is somebody may come in and say, 'Well, I heard so-and-so saying this or I seen this'," Stevens said. "Any bit of information or something like that, we consider a lead. We pursue that until it bears whatever fruit it has.

Search for woman now in fourth year

Monday, January 25, 2010

NEW MADRID (AP) — It has been four years since Teresa Butler vanished from her southeast Missouri home, and while tips continue to come into the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, no one knows what happened to the mother of two young boys.

“We still get leads, just almost on a weekly basis now,” Sheriff Terry Stevens told the Kennett Daily Dunklin Democrat. “We pursue that until it bears whatever fruit it has.

“You never know what seems, on the surface, to be an insignificant piece of information may lead to the key to solving this.”

RISCO, MO (KFVS) - Rumors or clues? To this day, tips continue to pour in regarding the disappearance of Teresa Butler.

Five years after she vanished, authorities say they continue to get calls claiming they know what happened to her. But police say they're still waiting on that one call or email that will bring her family closure.
