Chicago Police Department was contacted today to determine the status of Michael Jansson's case. The case # G141138 is open, but suspended due to lack of leads. No further information available.

Car pulled from river may contain bones of man missing since 2001

A car reported missing when a Lincolnwood man disappeared in 2001 was pulled from the Chicago River midday Saturday, after the Chicago Police Marine Unit located it using new sonar equipment, authorities said.

Authorities will have to use DNA testing to determine if the bones found today are those of Michael Jansson, who was 21 when he disappeared early on March 9, 2001, but the vehicle identification number of the car found matches the one that was reported missing when Jansson disappeared, police said.

As of late Sunday morning, authorities do not have a positive identification on the remains, according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

The Cook County medical examiner's office said the car pulled from the river contained bones that will have to be forensically examined before they are positively identified. Results of a Sunday examination of the bones was not available immediately, according to a spokeswoman for the medical examiner.

The Police Marine Unit was able to locate the car in the North Branch of the Chicago River near Blackhawk Street a few days ago, and city workers were able to pull the car from the river about noon Saturday, after starting work around 7 a.m., said Chicago police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton.

"Hopefully this will bring some closure to his family," if the remains are positively identified, Stratton said.

The car was initially discovered late last month, upside down, buried with only about 2 feet of the vehicle jutting out of the mud, silt, and weeds of the river, according to a law enforcement source.

Authorities had searched that same area when Jansson vanished but could not find anything. On the first day the Marine Unit was testing out new sonar technology as a training exercise last month, they decided to check that same area and had almost immediate success.

The new "side scan" sonar took photos and hit paydirt within hours, as compared to the weeks it would have taken to find with the old equipment.

Jansson was last seen outside what was then Biology Bar, 1520 N. Fremont St., and had been waiting for friends he had gone to the club with, according to missing persons fliers circulated by his family regarding his disappearance. When his friends left the nightclub, he was gone, as was the car they had all arrived at the club in, a Buick LeSabre.
